Delhi Police has registered an FIR against radical leftist and Congress-AAP supporter and lawyer Prashant Bhushan over his sharing of a digitally manipulated video falsely attributed to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which contained remarks critical of India, as reported in The New Indian Express. Bhushan later deleted the post.
The case was registered at the Special Cell Police Station after police detected the video during cyber patrolling on November 3. According to officials, police came across a social media post by the handle @thequotesnews, which flagged that a purportedly doctored clip of Lavrov had been shared from Bhushan’s X account.
The video which was pushed by Pakistani propaganda accounts allegedly contained misleading and inflammatory remarks attributed to the Russian foreign minister, with the potential to spread rumours, damage reputations and disturb public order, officials said.
The FIR invokes Sections 336(4) (forgery), 353(1)(c) (statements conducing to public mischief), 356 (defamation) and 340(2) (using a forged document as genuine) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). It also includes Section 66C of the Information Technology Act, which deals with punishment for identity theft.
The development follows a fact-check issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), which debunked the digitally manipulated video falsely attributed to Lavrov.
