AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran has expressed concern over reports that Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL), which had earlier signed a memorandum of understanding with the Tamil Nadu government for a major investment project, is now pursuing a project in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.
In a statement on X, Dhinakaran referred to media reports that MDL, which had signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu government during the previous administration to invest approximately ₹29,000 crore in a shipbuilding project at Thoothukudi, has now entered into discussions with the Andhra Pradesh government for a major shipbuilding cluster project.
The AMMK leader said the reports were a matter of concern and questioned the state’s ability to convert investment commitments into actual projects.
Dhinakaran alleged that while announcements regarding meetings between government officials and representatives of multinational companies frequently receive publicity, there has been little information regarding the conversion of such engagements into concrete investments, industrial projects, or employment opportunities.
He stated that Tamil Nadu has historically been regarded as one of India’s leading states in terms of industrial infrastructure and technological capability. However, he claimed that several companies which had earlier signed MoUs to establish projects in Tamil Nadu appeared to be shifting their focus towards neighbouring states following the change in government.
According to Dhinakaran, this trend has led to concerns among sections of the youth regarding the state’s ability to attract fresh investments and generate employment opportunities.
He further contended that retaining existing investment commitments was as important as attracting new projects and urged the government to engage with companies that had already signed MoUs with the state to ensure that proposed projects are implemented as originally planned.
Dhinakaran called upon the Tamil Nadu government to place greater emphasis on strengthening the state’s economy, expanding employment opportunities for young people, attracting new industrial investments, and ensuring that previously announced projects materialise within Tamil Nadu.
