CPI senior leader and former Tamil Nadu state secretary R. Mutharasan has warned that the C. Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government could lose power if the Left parties withdraw their external support, as reported in Tamil Samayam.
Mutharasan also criticised the TVK government for allegedly diverting attention from issues raised by MLAs in the Assembly instead of providing direct answers on matters concerning the public.
Speaking to reporters, Mutharasan said the Chief Minister and his ministers were attempting to divert public attention from important issues faced by the people.
“The Chief Minister and the ministers in his Cabinet are trying to divert the attention of the public from the important issues faced by the people. As a result, no issue is being properly addressed. When an issue is raised in the Legislative Assembly, the Chief Minister or the concerned minister should give a proper response. Instead, diverting the debate will serve no purpose for anyone,” Mutharasan said.
His remarks came amid criticism from TVK leaders, including Aadhav Arjuna, of the Left parties. Mutharasan questioned why Arjuna had recently expressed anger towards the Left and reiterated that issues raised by MLAs in the Assembly should be addressed by the Chief Minister or the concerned minister.
Mutharasan further pointed to the political importance of the CPI and CPI(M)’s external support to the TVK government. The Left parties had extended support to TVK after the 2026 Assembly election, when the party emerged as the single-largest formation but did not secure an absolute majority.
“If the CPI and CPM withdraw their support, there will be no Assembly or Council of Ministers. The Governor is waiting for an opportunity,” Mutharasan said.
The CPI leader’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the political arrangement under which the TVK government is functioning. The CPI has previously clarified that it is not part of an alliance with TVK and that its support to the government is being provided from outside. Mutharasan had also said the party was continuing in the DMK-led alliance while extending external support to the TVK government.
Mutharasan’s latest warning comes amid growing differences between the TVK government and Left leaders over several issues. His comments have also intensified political discussion over whether the Left parties could reconsider their support and what that could mean for the government’s stability.
