Around 10,000 kg of ration rice stored at an MSR rice mill in the Pottalpudur area near Kadayanallur in Tenkasi district was seized by officials from the Civil Supplies CID, according to a report by Polimer News.
The seized rice was packed in 186 bags and was allegedly being stored illegally at the mill.
The authorities arrested two people in connection with the seizure – Mariappan and Murugan, who are identified as the owners of the rice mill and Mariappan is a DMK functionary.
According to the police, the mill had obtained a contract to procure paddy purchased by the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, mill it and supply the processed rice back to the corporation.
During the investigation, officials reportedly found that the mill owners had been selling the rice meant to be supplied to the corporation in the open market. In its place, they allegedly purchased ration rice in bulk, polished it and supplied it to the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation.
The authorities seized the ration rice stored at the mill and arrested the two owners as part of the investigation.
