After Dravidianists Outrage, DMK’s Duraimurugan Blames And Scapegoats His Own Granddaughter Over Vedic Wedding

Dravidian Model: DMK Leader Duraimurugan Who Insulted Sanskrit As A Dead Language, Conducts His Granddaughter's Marriage With Vedic Chants

DMK general secretary Duraimurugan has expressed regret over his granddaughter’s wedding being conducted according to traditional Hindu rituals, following criticism from the Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) and other Dravidian organisations, as reported in Dinamalar.

Duraimurugan’s granddaughter, Senthamarai, got married in Chennai on November 1 in a traditional Hindu ceremony conducted with Vedic chants. The wedding drew criticism from Dravidian groups, given the DMK’s longstanding opposition to Vedic and Hindu religious rituals.

Responding to the criticism, Duraimurugan issued a statement on November 6, explaining that the wedding had been conducted according to his granddaughter’s wishes.

He said that his granddaughter, who had studied abroad, had informed him that she was in love with a man from another caste and wanted to marry him following traditional Vedic rituals.

Duraimurugan said he had accepted the arrangement only because of her insistence and expressed regret over the ceremony.

In his statement, he also recalled that his own wedding had been conducted under the leadership of former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, as had his son’s wedding, which he had personally organised.

Concluding his statement, Duraimurugan requested party workers and others not to politicise the wedding or turn it into a subject of public debate.
