As Hindu voices seem to enthusiastically promote Namit Malhotra’s film Ramayana, Dr Bodhisattva, who was involved in researching the story, has made controversial claims about the Gorakhnath Math in Gorakhpur, of which Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is the current head.
In an interview/podcast, Dr Bodhisattva alleged that the Gorakhnath Math had historically opposed the construction of the Ram Temple and the Kanwar Yatras. He also accused Yogi Adityanath of hypocrisy, pointing to the state government’s public celebration and welcoming of Kanwar pilgrims despite what he claimed were the teachings of Gorakhnath.
Explaining his claims, Dr Bodhisattva said that the Gorakhnath tradition’s texts and teachings discouraged temple visits and pilgrimages, describing them as distractions from inner spiritual pursuits.
He specifically referred to writings attributed to Baba Gorakhnath, alleging that they criticised Kanwariyas for travelling with sacred water without engaging in deeper spiritual reflection.
He also argued that Gorakhnath’s teachings rejected religious pomp and pretence, drawing a comparison with Kabir, whom he described as a follower of this tradition’s ideals.
Taking aim at Yogi Adityanath, Dr Bodhisattva questioned how someone heading the Gorakhnath Math could preside over a government that welcomes Kanwar pilgrims and showers them with flower petals.
He argued that Yogi could not simultaneously occupy the position of Chief Minister and claim to uphold the Math’s spiritual traditions if his actions contradicted the teachings of its gurus.
“If you do not follow the words of your gurus, the ones who established the institution, it means that you are not on their path,” he said.
