Private School Approval Fraud Case: Anbil Mahesh Blames Arasakumar, Says He Falsely Collected Money In The Name Of Bribes

Former DMK Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, who was arrested by the Chennai Central Crime Branch in connection with an alleged ₹100-crore fraud involving promises of securing government approvals for private schools, was remanded to Puzhal Central Prison, as reported in Nakkheeran.

While his bail petition is already pending before the court, the police had sought five days of custody to interrogate him. On November 2, Special Court Judge Sathiyamoorthy granted the police three days of custody for questioning. The three-day police custody has since ended.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court heard Anbil Mahesh’s bail petition today (5 November 2026).

Appearing for the former minister, his counsel argued that he should be granted bail as he had cooperated with the police investigation and would neither abscond nor tamper with evidence.

The counsel also questioned the changing figures in the alleged fraud, stating, “Just as prices keep rising, the amount of money allegedly involved in the fraud is also being increased. The case began with an allegation of ₹100 crore, but the police are now citing figures of ₹400 crore, ₹600 crore and even ₹800 crore.”

The defence further argued that the registration of a case by the Central Crime Branch, despite the existence of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), had created confusion and that the police were introducing new procedures.

Rejecting the prosecution’s contention that Anbil Mahesh was an influential person who could interfere with the investigation, the counsel maintained that he would not flee or destroy evidence.

The defence also alleged that a person named Arasakumar had falsely claimed that money had to be paid as bribes to government officials and politicians and collected money on that pretext.
