A private school in Hyderabad has sparked controversy after the parents of a Class 2 Hindu student alleged that their child was asked to memorise and recite the Kalma and Surah Al-Fatiha, two Islamic religious verses, as part of a school assignment, as reported in News18.
The incident allegedly took place at Success School in Hyderabad’s Saidabad area.
According to the student’s parents, the child returned home and informed them that the religious verses had been assigned as homework and that students were instructed to memorise and recite them in class. Disturbed by the assignment, the parents approached the school management, questioning why a Hindu child had been asked to learn and recite prayers belonging to another religion.
The parents alleged that compelling their child to memorise Islamic religious verses without their knowledge or consent was inappropriate and had hurt their religious sentiments. They also demanded strict action against those responsible and called for a fair and impartial inquiry into the matter.
Following the complaint, the Saidabad Police confirmed that they had received a complaint regarding the incident. Police said that legal opinion had been sought from the Public Prosecutor and that a case was being registered against the school management under the relevant provisions of law based on the allegations.
