Vetrimaaran who is known for making naxal-glorifying Dravidianist propaganda films, recently appeared on stage at an anti-NEET protest in Chennai on 23 July 2026 and claimed that his friend’s son scored more than 1170 out of 1200 in the Plus Two exams and yet could not clear NEET on the first attempt. The claim is impossible under the system that has been in force in Tamil Nadu for years.
The protest, organised by Pa Ranjith’s Neelam group at Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, supported students demanding the abolition of NEET amid nationwide unrest over alleged irregularities. Vetrimaaran, along with other film personalities, argued that the demand should not be limited to a “fair NEET” but should seek its complete ban. He said he sees the pressure of NEET firsthand through friends’ children, one of whom scored extremely high marks in the state board exams, failed NEET initially, and was attempting it again, while still struggling to secure an affordable medical seat.
“I’ve seen the pressure of NEET with my own eyes. My friends’ kids, 2 of them – one of them got around 1176 out of 1200 but couldn’t clear NEET in the first year. Now, he’s written again this year. But again he’s not in a situation where he can go to a college that his father can afford. He’s not a student who can’t study. He’s a very good student who learns with understanding. Another daughter of my friend is also studying. She’s completed school but is studying for the past one year. This is nothing but an attempt to remove our medical knowledge and make us stand with our hands folded in front of “them”., he said.

Tamil Nadu shifted the Plus Two (Class 12) total marks from 1200 to 600 starting with the 2018-19 academic year. Each subject moved to a maximum of 100 marks (from 200), with corresponding adjustments to theory, practicals and internals. This change was announced in 2017 and implemented for Plus Two thereafter. Current and recent students sit exams out of 600; a score of 1176 is mathematically impossible under the existing pattern and has been so for roughly eight years.
So, Vetrimaaran, like a true DMK stooge Dravidian Stock propagandist, lied on stage to mislead people and peddle propaganda.He invoked a Plus Two score of 1176 (or “more than 1170”) out of 1200 for a friend’s son supposedly facing today’s NEET pressure. That total has not existed in Tamil Nadu for years. The state shifted Class 12 to a maximum of 600 marks starting in the 2018-19 academic year; every recent board exam candidate has been scored out of 600. Presenting an old-system figure as a contemporary personal anecdote is simply false.
