DMK Leader Dayanidhi Maran Runs Away From Media

The DMK’s Dayanidhi Maran, representing Central Chennai constituency, appears to have decided to step away from the limelight temporarily. This move comes after facing severe criticism from both from the BJP’s high command and the DMK’s leadership at Arivalayam, who seem displeased with his recent comments and campaign efforts. In Central Chennai, where dissatisfaction with Maran’s past performance persists among voters, the DMK is struggling to address these concerns, particularly with the BJP’s Vinoj P Selvam gaining traction.

A video capturing Dayanidhi Maran’s evasion of questions during a campaign event has gone viral. When approached by India Today’s ‘So South’ anchor Akshita Nandagopal for a brief discussion on Chennai Central, Maran hastily retreated, ignoring the reporter’s attempts to engage him in dialogue, even when assured of discussing only local issues without controversy. Akshita said, “Sir, just few minutes on Chennai Central and nothing else… No controversy sir.” Maran was seen quickly boarding his campaign jeep, accompanied by HR&CE Minister P K Sekar Babu, thus avoiding further media interaction.

This incident occurred against the backdrop of Dayanidhi Maran’s loose tongue and arrogance, where he asserted his position as the foremost figure in the DMK, believing himself beyond reproach. During an interview with India Today’s Rajdeep Sardesai, Maran was asked about the “fear of Annamalai” in the political sphere, referring to the BJP Tamil Nadu chief as a rising star in the party. Rather than dismissing the question graciously, Maran made a flippant remark, referring to Annamalai as “the Joker.” Maran answered, “Who’s that? Oh, the Joker, you are talking about the Joker.” When Rajdeep questioned if Maran was underestimating Annamalai, Maran retorted by suggesting Rajdeep was overestimating, labeling Annamalai as a “lame duck.”

Dayanidhi Maran faced criticism from both the BJP state president Annamalai and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, indicating a rough turn of events for him. Annamalai of the TN BJP retaliated against Maran, labeling him as ‘ineffective’ without the backing of his family name. Annamalai remarked that, “Generally they say, one of the ugliest political parties in the country is the DMK. The DMK party is founded on the language of filth and if you look at DMK’s history, their abuse of women, their intolerance for any newcomer and the kind of abusive language they brought into political vocabulary, nobody in our state has done over the last 70 years.

Annamalai then aimed criticism at Dayanidhi Maran by taking a verbal jab at him stated, “DMK stands for abuse at its worst. And, this is coming from a person Dayanidhi Maran. If you remove the word ‘Maran’ from his name, he will not even get a job as anybody in any place. He is totally useless without his family’s surname. But unfortunately, when they know they are losing, DMK will always take recourse to abuse and filth.” Annamalai further stated, “If the DMK is abusing me, I take it as a badge of honour because all of us are self-made people from the ground by virtue of hard work. We are standing in a position trying to serve our people, not like Mr. Maran or Mr. Stalin or Mr. Udhayanidhi only because of their family initials they are in politics”

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, personally intervened to defend Annamalai the President of the Tamil Nadu state unit after he was labeled a “joker” by Dayanidhi Maran, a member of the DMK’s first family. Modi denounced the use of derogatory language against the BJP leader, emphasizing that such insults reflected poorly on the ruling party’s ethos and went against Tamil Nadu’s esteemed cultural values.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Mettupalayam, Coimbatore, Modi criticized the entrenched practice of family-oriented politics, asserting that it stifled the progress of emerging leaders. He lambasted the DMK for its arrogance and cited an instance where a senior member dismissed the BJP’s young leader, Annamalai, with disdainful remarks. Modi underscored that such haughtiness contradicted Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural heritage and affirmed that the people of the state would not tolerate such behavior.

Furthermore, Modi highlighted the disparaging language used by the DMK against Annamalai, emphasizing that it revealed the party’s true nature. He condemned the tendency of parties engaging in dynastic politics to obstruct the advancement of young leaders, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds and grassroots origins.
