Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has come under criticism after visuals from a breakfast event at an agricultural produce market showed him being served food and tea in different utensils from those used by other attendees.
Shivakumar was seen eating from a steel plate, while others at the gathering were served food on plastic plates. The difference was also visible during tea. Other attendees were served tea in paper cups, while the Chief Minister was served tea in a glass.
Reports indicate that the hosts had offered the Chief Minister the same arrangements as the others. However, sources cited by NDTV said Shivakumar was served separately by the owner using different cutlery and crockery.
The episode has raised questions over the Congress’ repeated claims of opposing social discrimination and standing for equality.
Congress’ Equality Falls Flat
The controversy assumes significance because Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly made caste discrimination and untouchability a major political issue.
In August 2026, Gandhi had alleged that caste-based discrimination remained widespread in India. He had specifically referred to the use of different cups at tea stalls, claiming that disposable paper or plastic cups were used for Dalits while others were served in reusable glass cups.
He had also described such practices as a manifestation of untouchability and argued that discrimination based on caste continues despite constitutional safeguards.
Against that backdrop, the visuals from Karnataka have triggered questions about the conduct of the Congress leadership itself.
The issue is not about whether Shivakumar personally selected the utensils. The reported explanation is that the separate crockery was arranged by the host. However, the optics remain stark: workers and other attendees were eating from plastic plates and drinking tea from paper cups, while the Chief Minister was served using a steel plate and glass.
Congress’ Double Standards
This is yet another instance that the Congress’ public messaging on equality does not always match what happens around its own leaders.
If the party objects to separate utensils when such practices are linked to caste or social status, the same standard would logically apply regardless of who is being served.
If equality matters, why should a Chief Minister be served differently from the workers and others sitting around him?
The distinction becomes particularly significant when Congress leaders publicly invoke the language of social equality and discrimination.
The reported arrangement may have been made by the host rather than Shivakumar himself. But a leader who seeks to project equality can also be judged by whether such distinctions are accepted or rejected in practice.
