Chennai Pays Tribute To Major Mukund Varadharajan: Velachery-Tambaram High Road Set To Be Renamed In His Honour

The 16-kilometre Velachery–Tambaram High Road is set to be renamed in honour of Major Mukund Varadharajan, the Indian Army officer who was killed in action and posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India’s highest peacetime gallantry award, as reported in Times of India.

The Tambaram Corporation Council on Thursday approved a resolution to rename the arterial road as “Major Mukund Varadharajan Road” in recognition of his service and sacrifice to the nation.

The proposal was taken up following approval from the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department.

Major Mukund Varadharajan, who served in the Indian Army, was killed during an anti-terror operation and was posthumously conferred the Ashoka Chakra for displaying exceptional courage and valour in the line of duty.

The decision to rename one of Chennai’s key arterial roads is being seen as a tribute to the decorated officer’s sacrifice and an effort to preserve his legacy in public memory.

The Velachery–Tambaram High Road is a major transportation corridor connecting several densely populated residential and commercial areas in the southern suburbs of Chennai. Once the renaming process is completed, the road will officially bear the name of Major Mukund Varadharajan.

The resolution was unanimously approved by the Tambaram Corporation Council during its meeting on Thursday, 11 June 2026.
