Chengalpattu TVK Functionary Caught On Camera Taking ₹1.3 Lakh Bribe; Expelled After Video Goes Viral

A fresh political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the BJP alleged that a functionary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) was caught accepting a bribe from a government contractor. The allegations have triggered attacks from opposition parties, with AMMK General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran also demanding action from TVK president Vijay. Following thevideo going viral, the functionary was expelled from the party.

A video was shared on social media claiming that Veera alias Veerasamy, Joint Secretary of TVK’s Chengalpattu East District unit and President of the Mambakkam Village Panchayat, accepted ₹1.3 lakh as a bribe from a contractor for clearing a pending bill, as reported in Tamil ABP Live.

According to the allegations, Naveen (24), a contractor from Mambakkam in Chengalpattu district, had completed the construction of a cement road worth ₹9.80 lakh. However, despite completing the work, payment for the project was allegedly not released.

Naveen allegedly approached Veerasamy seeking clearance of the pending bill. It is alleged that Veerasamy initially demanded ₹1.5 lakh as a bribe. After the contractor expressed his inability to pay the amount, the demand was allegedly reduced to ₹75,000.

However, the amount allegedly increased during subsequent discussions. According to the allegations, Naveen transferred ₹50,000 to Veerasamy’s Google Pay account on July 9. When he later met Veerasamy to pay the balance, the latter allegedly demanded ₹2 lakh, stating that ₹1 lakh was insufficient. Following further negotiations, the alleged bribe amount was finalised at ₹1.3 lakh.

It is further alleged that immediately after the contractor agreed to pay the amount, Veerasamy instructed the Panchayat clerk to process Naveen’s pending bill.

According to the allegations, another ₹50,000 was transferred to Veerasamy’s Google Pay account on July 11, while the remaining ₹30,000 was allegedly handed over in cash at the Panchayat office. A video purportedly showing the cash being handed over has since surfaced on social media and is being widely circulated.

Despite the alleged payment of ₹1.3 lakh, the contractor’s bill reportedly remains pending.

The allegations have also drawn attention to Veerasamy’s previous controversies. In September 2023, Ward Members from Wards 1, 2 and 5 lodged complaints with the Chengalpattu District Collector alleging irregularities in the functioning of the Panchayat. Following an inquiry, Veerasamy’s cheque-signing powers were revoked.

Subsequently, in May 2025, six ward members moved a no-confidence motion against him, resulting in his removal as Panchayat President. However, Veerasamy challenged the decision before the Madras High Court and resumed office around 20 days ago following court proceedings.

Reacting to the controversy, AMMK General Secretary T.T.V. Dhinakaran questioned Vijay’s anti-corruption stance and urged him to act against those facing corruption allegations within his own party.

Referring to Vijay’s political statements, Dhinakaran said:

“Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, who delivers film-style dialogues such as ‘I won’t let go if touched,’ should explain when and how he intends to eliminate the corrupt people within his own party.”

Dhinakaran alleged that the video purportedly showing Veerasamy accepting a bribe appeared to reinforce the corruption allegations already levelled against him.

He also referred to the recent controversy surrounding the alleged irregular registration of land belonging to the Palani Dandayuthapani Swamy Temple and said the latest allegations involving a TVK functionary raised questions about the party’s claims of transparent administration and corruption-free governance.

Calling for action, Dhinakaran urged Vijay to ensure that the video is thoroughly investigated and, if the allegations are found to be true, to initiate stringent action against Veerasamy. He further said that anti-corruption measures should be implemented in practice rather than remaining mere political promises.

Following the circulation of the bribery video, TVK’s Chengalpattu East District Secretary C.V. Dhananjayan announced on Wednesday that Veerasamy had been removed from the party’s primary membership and all party posts with immediate effect for acting in violation of the party’s principles and bringing disrepute to the organisation. The announcement after the allegations triggered a political row.
