“Modi Lost The Elections Big Time”, Says American Talk Show Host Bill Maher, Netizens School Him & Ask Him Research Better

The internet was filled with a clipping of American talk show host Bill Maher on 21 June 2024. The 2-minute clipping went viral because Maher made an ill-informed or rather a Congressi-narrative-like comment.

The statement was made on the show Real Time With Bill Maher on the episode which aired earlier this week. In the clipping, Maher is seen speaking to the guest on the show – American journalist Joel Stein, on Democrats and their policies regarding the issue of mass immigration in the United States. He warned that the migration will become an issue and would affect the Democrats on election day, he said, It’s happening in Europe right now, proves it in Europe, and it’s going to happen to America. It happened with Brexit, it’s going to happen again.”

Responding to Maher, Stein said,There are other roots of this far-right populism besides immigration. I mean, India has far-right populism,, Maher interjected him to say, “…it just got rejected, Modi just lost those elections, big time.”

Bill Maher seems to be following leftist and Congress narratives that Prime Minister Modi and the BJP “lost” the recent Lok Sabha elections. But Maher does not realise that it is the same Modi who “just lost those elections, big time” who is the Prime Minister of the country for the third straight time.

Stein further adds, “… he’s (Modi) been there for a very long time, with a lot of anti-Muslim hate.”

Both Maher and Stein are incorrect – neither does India have a far-right populism nor did Modi lose the elections. Stein like a typical leftist journalist we see in India also peddles the anti-Muslim hate propaganda when in reality, most of the BJP supporters are angry with the BJP for indulging in appeasement of Muslims!

Netizens schooled Maher for his ridiculous statements on India and PM Modi. Here are some of those comments.

It is noteworthy that BJP is the single largest party in the Lok Sabha and they are the ones who formed the government at the centre, albeit a coalition government under the leadership of PM Modi.

“This Is Bad Omen, Never Happened In The Last 518 Years”: Nellaiappar Temple Chariot’s Rope Snaps While Pulling, Devotees Slam HR&CE For Poor Quality Ropes

The highly anticipated Aani car festival at the Swami Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal Temple began on a troubling note this year when three ropes of the car snapped as it was being drawn at 7:18 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2024.

This festival, the main celebration for Swami Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal, involves the cars of Swami Nellaiyappar, Gandhimathi Ambal, Vinayagar, and Subramaniyar being pulled along the four car streets surrounding the 2000-year-old temple each year during the Tamil month of ‘Aani.’

The cars, especially the grand Swami Nellaiyappar car—the third-largest wooden car in Tamil Nadu, constructed in 1505 CE—are drawn by thousands of devotees and are expected to reach the station the same day.

Originally built with 13 decks, the car was reduced to 9 decks 25 years ago due to difficulties in navigating sharp turns, and further reduced to 5 decks later on.

The festival was formally inaugurated by District Collector K.P. Karthikeyan, Mayor P.M. Saravanan, Congress MP Robert Bruce, and BJP MLA Nainar Nagenthran and DMK MLA M. Abdul Wahab. The 85-foot-tall, 450-tonne car was drawn at 7:18 a.m., but three of the four ropes connected to the Swami Nellaiyappar car snapped, disappointing devotees who blamed the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department for not procuring quality ropes.

Despite the officials quickly bringing another rope to resume the festival at 8:20 a.m., another rope snapped immediately, leading to a decision to proceed with three ropes. However, yet another rope snapped, halting the festival for the third time within an hour, as the car reached the spot between Swami and Ambal sannidhi on East Car Street.

Angry devotees held the HR&CE officials responsible for the unfortunate events. After a brief commotion, a chain was attached to the car at 8:55 a.m. to continue the festival.

The devotee in the above video says “They asked us to pull the chariot from 6:30 AM to 7:30 AM. 3 ropes got snapped immediately after pulling. It looks like these ropes are more than 50 years old. All ropes were of poor quality. Nobody seems to have taken notice. We don’t know what were the authorities doing. Different political leaders came and took photo ops of pulling the chariot. Now nobody is there. Media is missing. Now the chariot is standing still. This is now bad time. There’s no rope now. Authorities as well as politicians are useless. We the public strongly condemn this.

In another video, a man can laments that they were just about to pull the chariot when the ropes snapped.

We did not even start pulling the chariot and the ropes got cut. This is such a big bad omen! The chariot has been running for more than 518 years. In these 518 years, not once has such an incident happened. This is a failure of the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments department. We’ve been telling for many years to change these ropes. Even yesterday, people from Hindu Munnani and other devotees had told them to change the ropes. Out of 4 ropes, 3 have got cut. What kind of festival are they organizing? They’re collecting funds through hundials. Aren’t they collecting money by leasing land and through rents? Crore of money falls into the hundi of Nellaiappar Temple every year. What are they doing with that income?“, the devotee slammed the HR&CE department.

Fissures Emerge In DMK Alliance: VCK Head Thiruma Calls For Total Prohibition, VCK MP Ravikumar Criticizes DMK’s Rationale Of Running TASMAC To Combat Illicit Liquor

The death toll in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy has tragically climbed to 47, with eight additional deaths reported among those who consumed the illicit liquor/packet arracks in Karunapuram, Kallakurichi. The victims include four women and one transgender individual. Most of the fatalities occurred overnight on 20 June 2024, and primarily affected residents of Karunapuram. Currently, 117 others are receiving medical treatment at Kallakurichi Government Medical College and Hospital, as well as hospitals in Salem, Villupuram, and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer) in Puducherry. Out of these, 28 individuals are in critical condition.

Amidst this crisis, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), a key ally of the ruling DMK, which had maintained silence until now, has voiced criticism against both the DMK and its leadership M K Stalin. VCK MP D Ravikumar has openly criticized ally DMK, while VCK chief and MP Thirumavalavan has called for complete liquor prohibition in Tamil Nadu.

VCK MP D Ravikumar has called on the central government to enforce nationwide “complete prohibition” to promote sobriety across the country. Speaking to reporters after visiting victims of the illicit liquor consumption, he highlighted the failure of successive Union (Congress) governments to implement the recommendations of the Prohibition Enquiry Committee’s 1954-55 report, which originally scheduled prohibition to begin on 1 April 1955. Ravikumar emphasized that the promised prohibition never materialized and criticized state governments for resorting to liquor sales as a revenue source, despite the risks of spurious alcohol deaths.

Regarding the Kallakurichi incident, the MP expressed deep regret, drawing parallels with the 2023 tragedy in Chengalpattu caused by methanol poisoning from illicit liquor consumption. He questioned how bootleggers obtained methanol, a controlled substance strictly meant for industrial use, and criticized the administration for failing to monitor its distribution, despite assurances from the state government about restricting its access for non-industrial purposes.

Ravikumar stated, “The fact that more than forty people have died after drinking poisonous liquor has caused a lot of shock. In May 2023, 22 people died after drinking the same poisonous alcohol mixed with methanol in Marakkanam area of Villupuram district. At that time the Tamil Nadu government announced that we will monitor and control the movement of methanol supply. If proper monitoring and control been taken, this death would not have happened this far. Therefore, we insist that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu should first come forward to regulate the distribution of methanol properly and take appropriate action.

He later emphasized that methanol cannot be produced by individuals but is strictly supplied to industries. He insisted on a thorough investigation into its origin and the parties responsible, suggesting they be treated as culprits. He condemned the arrack sellers for knowingly causing deaths by distributing methanol-laced liquor, advocating for them to face murder charges. He criticized the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister’s decision to merely transfer and suspend prohibition police officers, arguing that this was inadequate. Instead, he urged for them to be considered accomplices and face murder charges as well.

Later, in a critique aimed at the DMK government, Ravikumar mocked their approach, stating that despite the government’s rationale of running TASMAC liquor shops to combat illicit liquor, the inability to control the spread of illicit alcohol makes this justification unacceptable. He firmly asserted that the Tamil Nadu government should initiate a phased implementation of prohibition instead.

Regarding this matter, VCK chief Thirumavalavan issued a statement condemning the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy and advocating for complete prohibition. He emphasized that more than forty people had lost their lives due to poisonous liquor in Kallakurichi and stressed that the only permanent solution to this problem is the enforcement of total prohibition.

Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy: Report Says Police Official Who Cracked Down On Bootleggers Took VRS Due To Inaction From Higher-Ups And Political Threats

The recent resurgence of interest in the internet about N Mohanraj, the former SP of Kallakurichi who retired voluntarily in December 2023 due to concerns over rising illegal alcohol sales supported by two DMK MLAs, is making waves once more.

In December 2023, Samay Singh Meena assumed the role of Superintendent of Police in the Kallakurichi district, succeeding N Mohanraj, who had chosen to voluntarily retire. Reports indicated that Mohanraj had cited widespread corruption and the looming threat of drunken deaths, sparking significant debate following his retirement. As he had anticipated, a brutal illicit liquor consumption-related death has now claimed around 40 lives in Kallakurichi.

As per a Dinamalar report, a senior police official commented that at the start of 2023, there was significant controversy surrounding a mysterious death at a private school in Kaniyamoor, Kallakurichi district. During that time, Selvakumar, the then district SP, was transferred and was replaced by Mohanraj in his role.

Mohanraj began his career as a Sub-Inspector in 1987 and served diligently in the Law and Order and Anti-Corruption divisions across Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore, Salem, and Kallakurichi districts of Tamil Nadu.

When riots erupted over the Kallakurichi school girl death, DGP Sylendra Babu replaced Selvakumar with Mohanraj, aware that his appointment would acknowledge and address the seriousness of the situation. True to expectations, Mohanraj handled the sensitive issue calmly, appeasing public outrage and restoring normalcy to the district. He soon uncovered rampant bootlegging operations across the district and took swift action to curb them.

Upon discovering extensive bootleg liquor sales in Sankarapuram and Rishivandiyam, Mohanraj bolstered police presence and ordered several arrests. This information allegedly reached key figures within the DMK, who directly approached Mohanraj, insisting on non-interference with the bootleg liquor trade and issuing threats against any action taken.

Despite Mohanraj’s complaints to higher authorities, the police department allegedly failed to respond effectively, leading him to conclude that stopping the pervasive bootlegging operations in the district was virtually impossible.

Moreover, he feared and lamented the ongoing risk of deaths due to counterfeit intoxicating substances in the district. During his tenure as district SP, Mohanraj was apprehensive about potential hooch deaths within his jurisdiction, foreseeing the trouble and disgrace they would bring. In response, Mohanraj chose to take voluntary retirement eight months ahead of schedule, expressing his concerns to the Home Secretary and igniting a significant controversy within police circles.

His decision to retire has today made police officials acknowledge Mohanraj’s foresight and accuracy in predicting the tragic consequences of inaction.

Congress Vs Congress: AIPC, TN Cong Leader Spar With AIPC Chairman Praveen Chakravarty Over K’taka Cong Govt’s Decision To Hire BCG For Fulfilling ‘Guarantees’

The Karnataka Congress government recently enlisted the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to devise strategies to enhance revenue and reduce revenue collection leakages. This move comes as the government faces substantial costs from its five guarantee schemes, which are projected to cost ₹52,000 crore in the current fiscal year, benefiting around 5.10 crore residents. BCG’s recommendations include identifying new revenue streams in sectors like mining and asset monetization. One notable suggestion involves monetizing approximately 25,000 acres of land near Bengaluru by developing planned satellite towns in areas such as Bidadi, Anekal, Hoskote, Devanahalli, and Doddaballapur. This development is expected to increase land value, aiding fund generation.

The five guarantee schemes include Gruha Lakshmi (₹2,000 for every woman head of a family), Gruha Jyoti (200 units of free electricity per household), Shakthi (free state bus travel for women), Anna Bhagya (10 kg rice per month for BPL families), and Yuva Nidhi (financial support for unemployed graduates and diploma holders).

To support these initiatives, the state recently increased the cess on petrol and diesel, raising Karnataka Sales Tax (KST) on petrol to 29.84% and on diesel to 18.4%, leading to a price increase of around ₹3 per liter. The government is also aiming to boost compliance with GST and property tax to further augment revenue.

Fissures In Congress Over BCG Appointment

Congress member and Chairman of the Professionals’ Congress & Data Analytics, Praveen Chakravarthy took to his X handle to diss this move. He wrote, “If one wins elections by outsourcing core political functions to external fee charging transactional consultants, then one also governs by outsourcing core policy functions to similar consultants!”

This post was met with criticism from Congress members like Mohan Kumaramangalam and All India Professionals’ Congress Karnataka.

Kumaramangalam criticised Chakravarthy and wrote, “A data thief turned data fudger/and self declared consultant who manufactured data to mislead the congress leadership in 2019 and has since been masquerading as a politician is calling out real politicians for using the services of capable consultants. Hilarious”

https://twitter.com/MKumaramangalam/status/1803782403573395477

The All India Professionals’ Congress Karnataka handle surprisingly took a stand against its own Chairman. They wrote, “The professionals’ community aligned with the Congress party in Karnataka, would like to make it clear that we don’t agree with the opinions expressed by @pravchak the chairman of @ProfCong against our govt in Karnataka.”

https://twitter.com/ProfCongKAR/status/1803823088842248206

It is noteworthy that the Karnataka state government has engaged BCG for six months at a fee of approximately ₹9.5 crore, as reported in Money Control. While three private firms expressed interest, only BCG submitted a final tender.

Baring Anti-Hindu Fangs In The Name Of Prevention Of Caste Violence

Justice (retired) K. Chandru recently presented an interesting report he authored to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Thiru. M.K. Stalin. It is titled, Report of the one man committee to avoid violence based on caste and community feelings among college and school students, create harmony and to suggest guidelines.

The terms of reference, meticulously crafted to focus oncasteandcreed’, cleverly conclude,The Committee must investigate such other factors which it may consider necessary or as per the suggestions made by the government. In simpler terms, it is yet another horse before the cart committee – which (in all probability) started its work after writing the recommendations.

I must confess I haven’t gone through the 600+ pages of the full report. As we say, ஒரு பானை சோற்றுக்கு ஒரு சோறு பதம் I went through 18 pages—the terms of reference and the committee’s recommendations.

Chapter 15 of this report is the recommendations. This chapter has two sections: (1) Cannot Wait Anymore – these are the twenty recommendations the committee wants the government to implement in the short term and (2) Long-term goals – Here, the committee has three lofty pipedreams.

While section 1 is the most problematic for most of us, I would prefer to start with section 2 to illustrate how non-serious the government is when tackling caste issues.

15 (2) (2): Enhance local bodies’ control over primary education – While this prima facie looks lofty, the simple question you must ask yourself is – Who controls local bodies? The answer is simple: the dominant caste controls the local bodies. Haven’t we heard about Naickaneri village panchayat? The issue was brought to light by the Honorable Governor of Tamil Nadu, His Excellency Sri. R.N. Ravi. It is another story the TN government came up with a halfhearted explanation for this serious story, asking the Governor of Tamil Nadu to look at the North Indian states.

To make the long story short, if the government was any serious about solving the caste issue, they should start looking at it from the politicisation and weaponisation of castes by creating vote banks. But then, if we go to section 1 of Chapter 15, we know exactly what the government’s objective is. The objective of the government and this committee is clear with the very clever half-use of a quote from Babasaheb Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

“Hindus must consider whether the time has not come for them to recognise that there is nothing fixed, nothing eternal, nothing sanatan; that everything is changing, that change is the law of life for individuals as well as for society. In a changing society, there must be a constant revolution of old values; and the Hindus must realize that if there must be standards to measure the acts of men, there must also be a readiness to revise those standards.”

I would have been happy if the government of Tamil Nadu had read this quote from Babasaheb in his book Thoughts on Pakistan, while they obfuscated the Coimbatore bomb blast, calling it a cylinder blast.

“Appeasement means to offer to buy off the aggressor by conceiving at or collaborating with him in the rape, murder, and arson on innocent Hindus who happen for the moment to be the victims of his displeasure. On the other hand, settlement means slaying down the bounds which neither party to it can transgress. Appeasement sets no limits to the demands and aspirations of the aggressor. Settlement does. The second thing the Congress has failed to realize is that the policy of concession has increased their aggressiveness and what is worse the Muslims interpret these concessions as a sign of defeatism on the part of the Hindus and the absence of will to resist. This policy of appeasement will involve the Hindus in the same fearful situation in which the Allies found themselves as a result of the policy of appeasement which they adopted towards Hitler.”1

Or, this quote (from the same book) while banning Ganesh Chaturthi processions giving trivial reasons,

“Music before mosque is played in all Muslim countries without any objection. Even in Afghanistan, which is not a secularized country, no objection is taken to music before Mosque. But in India, the Musalmans must insist upon its stoppage because the Hindus claim a right to it.2

Of course, the façade of reverence for Babasaheb comes when you want to twist his thoughts to suit you.

15 (1) (1): Dropping Caste Appellations – This looks like a great suggestion on the face. After all, it would be good to remove all the caste suffixes that the names of schools and educational institutions have. Right? But not quite. Didn’t the earlier governments try this? They tried removing castes from the names of streets and bridges, renamed the entire transport corporation divisions, etc. But what results did it bring? Zilch. So, this is yet another cosmetic, we did it for the sake of doing something move that will not bring about anything.

15 (1) (2): Curriculum change – Funnily enough, the land of EVR and Dravida Model has just realized that they need tochangethe curriculum to includetopics based on social justice, equality, and non-discrimination based on caste, in a time-bound manner. But wait, didn’t we have all this before? I remember reading (among other social justice-themed things) Ravana Kaviyam by Pulavar Kuzhandai as part of Tamil poetry in school.

15 (1) (8): Students – Now we come to the obviously problematic portion of the report. Where the focus is on nothing else but Hinduism.

Avvaiyar said நீரில்லா நெற்றி பாழ். But who cares? This is the Dravida Model that wants to eradicate Sanatana Dharma, which is like Dengue and Malaria. So, the committee says, Students should be prohibited from wearing any coloured wristbands, rings, or forehead marks (Tilaka).

The interesting thing here is theTerms of referenceand the careful usage ofcasteandcreedto exclude skull caps, burkhas, and the cassock worn by Christian priests. Why don’t we invoke the secular nature of India and ban all these? But no, they vote en masse. Therefore, we cannot upset them at any cost. The Hindus, after all, doff their backsides and walk shamelessly behind those who want to eradicate Sanatana Dharma.

By the way, Avvaiyar talks about all the foreheads, right? She doesn’t say, ஐயர், முதலியார், பறையர், அருந்ததியர் நெற்றி. So why would you ban the forehead mark, which is common for all Hindus?

15 (1) (8) (d) is very interesting. This will not solve any problem but weaponise the school student community even faster. Here is the recommendation: you make your own judgement.

“The State government and School Education Department should permit all schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu to have student associations in every institution, with leadership elected annually by allowing all students to vote in those elections.”

15 (1) (10): Conducting Ara Neri Classes (அறநெறி வகுப்புகள்) – This is great. I am sure they will base their classes on Tirukkural. For the powers be, this is what Parimelazhagar3 (பரிமேலழகர்) says in the foreword (உரைப்பாயிரம்) to his commentary of Tirukkural about what Aram (அறம்) is.

He says, “அறமாவது, மனு முதலிய நூல்களில் விதித்தன செய்தலும் விலக்கின ஒழிதலும் ஆம்.”

Righteousness is doing what you are asked to do by books like Manu and not doing what they want you to avoid.

We know they only twist Thirukkural and Thiruvalluvar the way they like. And let us be sure that they will only talk about a special brand of Aram that suits the Dravidian narrative.

15 (1) (16): Social Justice Students Force (SJSF) (சமூக நீதி மாணவர் படை) – This one is comical to say the least. They want to create a quasi-army akin to NCC with drills, exercises, and all the bells and whistles to espouse the values of social justice. This after 15 (1) (15) talks about NSS. So, my simple question is, why should we raise a new force? Why can’t you ask NCC and NSS to adapt and spread the message of unity and harmony? At least for me, this doesn’t make any sense.

15 (1) (18): Restriction on the Use of School Properties for Non-Educational Purposes—We can clearly see that the Dravidian Model is rattled by the growth of Nationalistic fervour in Tamil Nadu. This clause, which covers both government and private educational institutions, looks to stop nationalistic organisations like RSS, Hindu Munnani, etc., from getting any space for their Shakas or meetings. As they say, “சீப்பை ஒளித்துவைத்தால் கல்யாணம் நின்றுபோகுமோ?” No matter how dictatorial and one-sided the current establishment is, it is just time before Tamil Nadu wakes up and responds to its anti-Hindu ways.

To close, I personally believe that the problem is not in the schools. It is not the wristband, ring, or forehead mark. Mind you, no one talks about Vengaivayal. However, one chapter of this report is dedicated to theNanguneri Incident. This chapter is titled –Nanguneri Incident– An Eye Opener. In the Nanguneri incident, one boy takes an issue out of school and hacks his schoolmate and his sister at home (the stress is mine).

The needle this committee searched for is in the society, fired and run by the much-touted Dravidian model.

The social justice (சமூக நீதி) the Dravidian Model is supposed to have brought about stinks, and it will until Vengaivayals, Nanguneris, KV Nallurs, and Thiruvandars stop.

Here is what the Thiruvalluva Nayanar says for the current dispensation

TN BJP Chief Requests Home Ministry to Conduct CBI Probe in the Kallakuruchi Hooch Tragedy

The number of fatalities from the hooch tragedy in Kallakuruchi has risen to 42 as of 20 june 2024, with more than 80 individuals still receiving treatment in hospitals across Kallakuruchi and nearby districts. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has tasked a single-member commission led by former High Court Judge B. Gokuldas to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Simultaneously, the CB-CID has assumed responsibility for another investigation into the matter.

In this backdrop, BJP state president Annamalai visited the families of those who tragically passed away from consuming illicit liquor in Kallakurichi, offering his condolences. Annamalai later addressed the media, expressing concern over the incident and stating, “The families affected by the consumption of illicit liquor will receive assistance through central government schemes. Tamil Nadu BJP will provide a relief of ₹1 lakh to each victim’s family. Union Home Minister Amit Shah contacted me regarding this tragic incident, and a detailed report will be submitted.” Highlighting the issue of liquor sales, Annamalai emphasized, “It is concerning that such sales occurred not in villages but in the heart of the district capital. The ease of availability of illicit liquor is alarming. Those who lost their lives were daily wage earners who cannot afford expensive Tasmac liquor daily, thus resorting to cheaper alternatives.”

Regarding this matter, Annamalai has formally requested a CBI investigation by writing a letter to Home Minister Amit Shah, Annamalai’s correspondence read, “It is with deep pain and grief that I write to your good office on behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu about the recent hooch tragedy at Karunapuram in the Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu that has claimed 36 invaluable lives while I write to you. Over 90 persons are being treated in various government hospitals; it is feared that the death toll may increase further.”

“We want to inform your good office that a similar incident that occurred in May 2023 in Marakkanam of Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district and Chengalpattu district claimed 23 precious lives. In the past two years, Tamil Nadu has lost over 60 lives to hooch because of the ineffective governance of the DMK government. It is learnt from reliable sources that the production and sale of illicit liquor in Tamil Nadu is happening at the behest of party functionaries and cadres belonging to the DMK, where points of sale of such liquor are located near judicial courts, police stations, and other government offices. The families of the deceased in the Kallakurichi hooch tragedy claim that the sale of illicit liquor happened in the prime areas of the town. It is evident that the sale of illicit liquor is done in full public view with the knowledge of the local police, who operate under the direction of local political leaders belonging to the DMK,” it added

Considering the dire state of governance in Tamil Nadu under the DMK rule, on behalf of BJP Tamil Nadu, we kindly request your good office to order a CBI enquiry on this matter as we firmly believe that the DMK Government will curtail the State Police’s from bringing all the persons responsible for the deaths before the court of law,” it further read.

Hooch Tragedy Victims Made To Wait For DMK Scion Udhayanidhi Stalin To Come And Give Them Cash Relief

The village of Karunapuram comes to terms with the deaths of their fellow villagers and family members due to the illicit liquor.

Every street in the village is witnessing funerals as the community mourns those who died from consuming illicit liquor. The people have a single demand from the government: to completely stop the sale of hooch and illegal arrack so that marginalized families can live without fear.

In response to this tragedy, Chief Minister Stalin announced compensation of ₹10 lakh for each family who lost a loved one and ₹50,000 for those undergoing treatment. However, the bereaved families of the deceased individuals are still waiting for Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development Udhayanidhi Stalin to deliver the promised relief funds of ₹10 lakh each. Some of the widowed women sat there, pale-faced, waiting on a hot sunny afternoon.

However, the heavens opened up with heavy rain, seemingly mourning the tragedy that has struck Kallakurichi. While it was expected that the funerals would take place by evening, the continuous rain has halted further proceedings in Karunapuram village.

The Minister of Youth Welfare and Sports Development, Udhayanidhi Stalin, is facing criticism for making the bereaved families of the deceased wait to receive the promised relief funds of ₹10 lakh each.

“We Don’t Want Free Rice, Just Close Down The Liquor Shops”, Elderly Woman In Anguish Falls At ADMK Leader EPS’s feet

Grief hangs heavily over Kallakurichi in Tamil Nadu following a tragic hooch incident that has claimed the lives of at least 37 people, with fears that the toll may rise further. Nearly 100 people were also hospitalized

In response to the tragedy, Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS), the Opposition Leader and AIADMK General Secretary, visited the bereaved families on 20 June 2024. Accompanied by former Minister CV Shanmugam and others, he paid his respects to the deceased and consoled their relatives. Witnessing the anguish of the families, some women fell at his feet, tearfully pleading for the closure of all liquor (TASMAC) shops, rejecting any compensatory and financial aid measures. This emotional scene momentarily moved Edappadi Palaniswami.

Women falling at the feet of EPS cried and said, “The little kids have started to drink alcohol, please close the liquor shops. We don’t want free rice. Close liquor shops.

Later, he visited those undergoing treatment in hospitals after consuming the illicit liquor. Addressing the media, he expressed profound sorrow over the deaths, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. He criticized the administration for allowing such illicit activities to thrive near key government offices, suggesting a significant organized effort behind the illegal liquor trade. This incident underscores the urgent need for stringent action against the perpetrators and raises questions about local governance and law enforcement in Kallakurichi.

Local residents, particularly women, expressed their distressing situation, stating, “Since yesterday, we haven’t slept. What for and why?… All these days, they drank all these days, we all have been watching his. Even we don’t know but there is an accomplice here … One of the reasons for the sale is the supply comes from elsewhere, and who brews it is crucial. This is one of the reasons, only because it comes from there, and the government allows it, they are doing it courageously. They don’t brew and sell it privately. It comes from there; do you know where? They say it comes from the mountains, here and there. But because it comes from there, it has caused so many deaths.”

Later, she also expressed disappointment, saying, “We are ADMK loyalists but after Amma (Jayalalithaa’s death), we trusted Stalin and helped him win, but we can’t believe such things are happening even under his administration. People of low morals are using his name to carry out these activities.” Another woman intervened, blaming the police, said: “Even after we complained, why haven’t they taken any action? Who is responsible for this? The police are entirely responsible for this.” The first woman continued, questioning, “When we complain to the police, how do the accused know our names? How does news get to them? It is because they are also involved.”

Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy: Locals Allege Rampant Police Connivance In Illicit Liquor Trade Enabling Access To Minors

The state of Tamil Nadu is stunned by the news of the hooch tragedy in Karunapuram village in Kallakurichi. At least 37 people are reported to have died and around 116 people have been hospitalised. The case was handed over to the CB-CID on 19 June 2024.

Streets of the Karunapuram village were filled with the dead bodies of the victims on 20 June 2024 with relatives mourning for everyone who had passed.

New SPs and IAS have been appointed in the region to investigate the matter. It is alleged that there are similarities between the hooch tragedy that occurred in Chengelpet in 2023 which saw 22 deaths.

Local residents mourning the deaths of their family and friends allege that the illicit liquor peddlers have been functioning with the connivance of the police. They also demand the government to curb the sale of illicit liquor in their locality.

When enquired with the newly appointed Kallakurichi District Collector MS Prashant regarding the connivance of the police with the arrack sellers, he stated that the matter was under investigation.

Kallakurichi Superintendent of Police Rajat R Chaturvedi also stated similarly that since he had been appointed just recently, he was unaware of the details of the matter and promised to look into the allegations.

Women mourning the passing of their loved ones stated that it was the younger people of the village who were addicted to liquor who had fallen prey to the illicit liquor. They also alleged that any complaints made to the police by the local villagers about illegal liquor operations resulted in their private information being disclosed to the illegal liquor mafia by the police.

Additionally, the woman alleged that the police officers who were supposedly involved were suspended from work, but to her, it felt like they had gone on a vacation and were on rest. They also alleged that whether they are transferred to another location, they will continue doing the same work. She alleged that the police department’s lackadaisical attitude towards illicit liquor peddlers has led the village to this state today. She also alleged that in Jayalalithaa’s tenure, such issues were dealt with with an iron fist.

It is alleged that the illicit liquor peddlers had pasted CM Stalin’s photo on their home doors to avoid police action.

Who Are The Victims Of The Hooch Tragedy?

A lady in this video alleges that any person who questioned the illicit liquor peddlers would be attacked. It is said that the victims all belonged to the SC category and no elected official came to visit the families. Only the Tahsildar was doing some work. The tragic illicit liquor incident in Tamil Nadu’s Kallakurichi district has shed light on a disturbing trend involving minors and the apparent complicity of corrupt officials. According to the lady in the video, boys aged 13-15 have been consuming spurious liquor delivered door-to-door in plastic packets resembling water pouches by peddlers on motorbikes. The situation is further exacerbated by the presence of drug abuse among these young individuals in the area.

Compounding the issue are allegations of corruption within the local police force, with claims that officers have been accepting bribes and turning a blind eye to complaints regarding the illicit liquor trade.

The lady said, “Even if the police come on rounds to the village, as they hear the sound of the police vehicle/whistle, the peddlers are alerted. They pretend to apprehend one or two peddlers and take them aside, accept money, and let go of the apprehended peddlers.”

She further adds, “They have to put a stop to this liquor trade. We expected problems to arise once the DMK party returned to power in the state. Police have never come here to ask for bribes (mamool), nor have they controlled them (peddlers). They (peddlers) proudly say we are paying mamool so the police will not be able to do anything to us.” She further said, “There is a court, a police station nearby, even a Collector. yet no one came here or any action was taken despite presenting a memorandum.” It is also alleged that there is not just one peddler but many and also from outside the village who come to Karunapuram to sell the illicit liquor.

The incident has sparked calls for accountability and stringent action against those involved in the illicit liquor trade, as well as demands for measures to address the underlying issues contributing to the consumption of spurious alcohol and drug abuse among minors in the region.
