Four Lives Claimed by Electrocution Amid Heavy Rainfall; BJP TN Leader Ashvathaman Demands ₹10 Lakh Compensation For Victims

On 14 October 2024, heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu resulted in the tragic loss of four lives, including that of a minor, due to electrocution by fallen electric poles. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange alert for 11 districts, including Chennai, which will remain in effect until 18 October 2024. As the northeast monsoon approaches, concerns are mounting that these fatalities might have been avoided with better infrastructure preparedness.

In response, A. Ashvathaman, State Secretary of the Tamil Nadu BJP, condemned the ruling DMK, calling for immediate compensation of ₹10 lakhs for the victims. He also questioned whether the DMK plans to provide compensation solely for deaths related to illegal liquor.

Ashvathaman via his official X account stated, “Provide 10 lakhs to the families of those who died due to electrocution! A total of 4 people died yesterday in a single day, namely Ganesan in Mellur of Madurai district, Aiyakannu near Karaikudi in Sivagangai district, a 13-year-old girl named Gayathiri in Ramanantham near Kolunthurai in Cuddalore district, and Kumaresan near Ambur in Tirupathur district. 5 people died in airshow at Marina as arrangements were not done properly by the state government. The Dravida model government should immediately provide a compensation of 10 lakhs each to the families of these 9 people.”

“Will the Dravidian model government give compensation only to those who died consuming illicit liquor?! All these deaths are due to the irresponsibility of the Dravidian model government. The Dravidian model government should take moral responsibility and immediately release compensation to the families of the deceased,” he questioned

After Senthil Balaji took charge again as the Minister of Electricity, the electricity sector has started to perform very badly. Several hours of power cut continues in the capital city Chennai. When the public visited Mayiladuthurai Courtallam where the power cut continued throughout the night, the electrical workers there were lying drunk. Senthil Balaji is also the Minister of Liquor. So he only does that job of selling liquor regularly. Therefore, the irregularities in the power sector should be removed immediately. With the onset of monsoon, deaths due to falling power lines must be prevented,” he added

PMK founder S. Ramadoss has also issued a strong condemnation of the DMK, claiming the government has failed to prevent flooding in Coimbatore, Madurai, and other districts during recent rains. He warned that Chennai is likely to face similar issues due to incomplete stormwater drain projects in the city.

In a statement, Ramadoss noted that residents are already suffering from the effects of rain before the northeast monsoon officially begins. He highlighted that streets in Coimbatore and Madurai were inundated, and normal life has been disrupted in Pudukottai, Sivaganga, Karur, and Virudhunagar as well. He attributed these problems to inadequate stormwater drainage and lack of desilting in irrigation canals.

Citing the tragic deaths of four individuals in one day due to the rains, he criticized the state government and the Electricity Department for their lack of precautionary measures.

“Despite Chief Minister MK Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, and the Chief Secretary reviewing monsoon preparedness last month, no tangible progress has been made. With heavy rainfall warnings issued for Chennai, residents are understandably anxious about what lies ahead,” he stated.

Ramadoss pointed out that stormwater drainage work remains unfinished at over 45 locations in Chennai, stressing that the government and Greater Chennai Corporation are relying on boats and motor pumps for flood management. “The civic body must take all necessary steps to safeguard the public,” he urged.

Haryana Assembly Elections 2024: Significance And Takeaways

Haryana Elections

The Bharatiya Janata Party stunned everyone with its stupendous victory in the recently held Haryana assembly elections. Every exit poll talked about a comfortable Congress victory, and the ingenious BJP think tank humbled each one.

The 2024 Lok Sabha results humbled the BJP with a slide in its seats, and it’s evident that they were caught off-guard. At that time, several exit polls showed 280 to 300+ seats, which was proved wrong. The first significant assembly election post the stunning Lok Sabha results was the Haryana one which also revealed that the exit polls were wrong. In some way, these two back-to-back nightmares for the poll pundits show that the people are outsmarting them and will not enjoy the same credibility they used to enjoy.

Another significant point to observe is the stark difference between the BJP and the Congress as an organization. The BJP has proved that it really works on it prior mistakes seriously, makes the right course corrections and bounces back in their next test. On the other hand, Congress seems to be glaringly weak in this area. Let us deep dive into this point a bit for better understanding. The BJP took several bold decisions which were a bit surprising and counterproductive at that time but proved to be masterstrokes after the actual results came out. Nayab Singh Saini, an OBC leader and not a very popular face, replacing Manohar Lal Khattar a few months before the Lok Sabha elections, consolidation of the non-Jat/Jatav votes, quickly resolving the differences with the RSS who apparently did 16000 meetings in Haryana, declining tickets to several sitting MLAs are just a few key examples of the intelligent steps taken by the BJP which led to their victory. On the other hand, Congress totally failed to take advantage of the small momentum they got after their increased tally in the Lok Sabha elections by putting all their eggs in the usual baskets relying totally on Deepender Hooda. Rahul Gandhi also couldn’t stop Kumari Selja from going public about her misgivings about the Hooda domination and this was noticed by the Dalit voters.

The Dalit voters who in some states got a bit carried away by the Congress narrative of “Samvidhan aur aarakshan khatre mein hai” in the Lok Sabha elections, probably understood the hollowness of these narratives when they saw no such thing happening after Narendra Modi came back to power for the third time and when they saw their leader, Kumari Selja, being treated so shoddily by the Haryana Congress they understood how much the Congress walks their talk. All this probably led to this segment moving towards the BJP. This will have a great impact on the Dalit voters in Maharashtra and other upcoming elections states.

The Haryana elections are very significant for the BJP as a loss in this first major election post Lok Sabha polls would have pushed them to the backseat with every single TV news channel talking about the decline of Narendra Modi’s popularity and about the Congress rising a viable alternative. The Congress would also have used this Haryana victory to push its narrative much more strongly in the upcoming elections in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Delhi etc. This win in Haryana now will give BJP a much-needed enthusiasm and momentum to win the next big Maharashtra polls.

Another big takeaway is that BJP now has understood how the Congress and its allies will play their cards of freebies and lofty promises. The only downside is that BJP has no other go but to roll out some of these populist schemes before Congress does or make them more attractive than the opposition which is now predictable. Although this will not be good economics and will go against the non-revadi approach earlier taken by Narendra Modi, they know that if they don’t do it people will go with the others who promise it. This is one big takeaway that will be common feature in every BJP strategy running up to every subsequent election from now, sadly but rightly so.

Yet another very significant takeaway is that the Haryana voters have rejected the so called famers protest by leaders like Rakesh Tikait. The protest was done predominantly by a group of farmers of Haryana and Punjab. People saw through their design and even though again the drama of marching to Delhi etc. was started, it did not pay any dividend to the political masters who were inciting this against the Modi government. Based on the Haryana election results, there is a high chance that these kinds of protests will fade away into oblivion as people are tired of such devious acts which are also misused by foreign powers. Rakesh Tikait is now left blaming Deepender Hooda for the failure of their efforts in Haryana.

BJP will now continue to consolidate the Hindu votes as much as possible in every state election. They will start doing harder Hindutva politics. This is evident from similar speeches by Narendra Modi, Yogi Adityanath and RSS chief, Mohan Bhagawat around the importance of Hindus unifying in order to avoid disastrous consequences. The Congress and the other INDI Bloc parties might call this fear mongering, against the secular structure, usual jhumla of BJP etc. but this time there will be more traction for BJP’s call. Pawan Kalyan, one of BJP’s allies, leading the Sanatana charge from the south will only act as a fillip to the BJP narrative of Hindu unification.

Several non-BJP leaning political pundits and journalists will argue that Maharashtra elections will be very different from the Haryana elections as their local issues will not be the same and it will be anybody’s game, at the back of their minds they also know that the Haryana results have already given an edge to the BJP and has given them a good formula for winning. The more enthused BJP and RSS cadres will leave no stone unturned in Maharashtra and if the Ajit Pawar factor does not prove to too much of a liability, BJP has great chances for a victory in this state where Shivaji Maharaj still resides in the hearts of every Hindu.

Dravidian Model: Media Reports Fines Levied On Cars Parked On Flyovers Amid Heavy Rain, Chennai Traffic Police Refutes Claim

Media Reports Fines Levied On Cars Parked On Velachery Flyover Amid Heavy Rain

The Greater Chennai Traffic Police have officially denied claims made by Tamil news channels that circulated on 14 October 2024, regarding fines issued to cars parked in Velachery flyover.

With heavy rain alerts in effect for the next four days across Tamil Nadu, residents in Velachery and Pallikaranai parked their vehicles on a flyover, anticipating potential flash flooding. A video of the scene went viral, showing cars lined up along the bridge.

Following this, several Tamil news outlets, including Sun News and Puthiya Thalaimurai, reported that the traffic police were issuing ₹500 fines to those vehicles. Some car owners, who called to discuss their parked cars, expressed their frustration and stated they would not retrieve their vehicles until the rain subsided. This situation highlights the challenges Chennai faces during heavy rainfall and the associated flood risks.

However, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police via its official X account clarified that, “There has been a rumor circulating that the Traffic Police are fining vehicles parked on the bridges. Greater Chennai Traffic Police want to clarify that no such action is being taken. No such vehicles are charged. Strict instructions are given to all the traffic police personnel in Chennai city.”

“To further assist the public during the monsoon season, the Greater Chennai Traffic Police are taking additional steps to ensure convenience. Our Police Control Room will help citizens find nearby parking spots, ensuring that vehicles are parked safely and conveniently during the challenging weather. The safety and comfort of the public are our top priorities, and we are committed to providing the necessary support. Traffic Control Rooms North & West 044-23452330 South & East 044-23452362” It added.

With the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a red alert for October 16, 2024, predicting extremely heavy rainfall in Chennai and its surrounding areas, residents rushed to stock up on essential goods on 14 October 2024. People living in flood-prone regions hurried to park their vehicles on flyovers, despite warnings from the Chennai City Traffic Police that such parking would result in fines.

In response to the situation, Chief Minister MK Stalin directed officials to declare a holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts on October 15, which was designated an orange alert day. He also advised IT companies in these areas to allow employees to work from home from October 15 to 18.

To prepare for the impending weather, 1,181 relief camps and 469 boats have been put in place. These measures are being taken as the Regional Meteorological Centre forecasts the Northeast monsoon’s arrival over the southern peninsula by 16 or 17 October 2024. The IMD warned that some areas in Chennai and nearby districts, as well as five districts in the north and delta regions, could experience “extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20 cm.”

Amid these warnings, many residents in Chennai, particularly in low-lying Velachery, chose to park their cars on flyovers, ignoring the threat of fines. One resident, Balaji Vaidyanathan, shared, “During the December floods, my sedan was submerged, costing me ₹80,000 in repairs. I can’t afford that again. Even if I get fined for unauthorized parking over four days, it will only amount to ₹4,000, much less than repair costs.”

Christian Proselytizing Road Barricade In Tenkasi Removed After Hindu Munnani Files Complaint

Christian Proselytizing Road Barricade In Tenkasi Removed

In a significant development on the Ambai to Tenkasi main road, a controversial banner on a barricade promoting a Christian proselytizing campaign was taken down following public outcry. The removal came after a complaint was filed with the district authorities by concerned citizens and members of the Hindu Munnani, who objected to the banner’s content.

The content on the barricade read, “Jesus Frees You – Japamaalai”.

The banner, which was put up by a Christian organization, sparked criticism from local Hindu groups, who viewed it as an attempt to promote religious conversion in a predominantly Hindu area. The Hindu Munnani swiftly took action by lodging a formal complaint with the district governor, demanding the immediate removal of the banner.

The district authorities responded promptly to the complaint, removing the banner on the same day. Hindu groups viewed the incident as a victory, hailing the swift action taken by the district administration as a stand against proselytizing activities.

Members of the Hindu Munnani expressed satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the removal of the banner was an important step in maintaining the region’s cultural and religious integrity. They reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the interests of the local Hindu population and preventing any activities that could be seen as attempts to disrupt communal harmony.

Kerala Waqf Board Claims Ownership Of Ancestral Land Of Hundreds Of Families, Pinarayi Govt Opposes Centre’s Waqf Bill, TNM Upset With Hindu Support For Christian Families

Kerala Waqf Board Claims Ownership Of Ancestral Land

In Kerala’s Ernakulam district, 400 Christian and 200 Hindu families are battling to keep their ancestral homes as the Waqf Board asserts ownership over land that their communities have occupied for generations. The properties in question lie in the coastal regions of Munambam and Cherai, areas historically inhabited by the Latin Catholic fishing community. The dispute, centered around the legal status of the land, has revived decades-old tensions and brought significant distress to the residents.

The controversy began with a petition claiming that the homes stand on Waqf property, initially gifted in 1950 by a wealthy Muslim benefactor named Muhammed Siddhique Sait. The 404-acre land parcel was donated to Farook College in Kozhikode with the stipulation that any income generated from it would serve educational purposes. The land has since changed hands many times, with numerous transactions occurring over the decades. The families had been under the impression that their land ownership was legitimate and recognized by the courts since the Kerala High Court granted legal possession to Farook College in 1975.

In 2008, a renewed dispute emerged when the Justice Nissar Commission, appointed to investigate alleged mismanagement of Waqf properties, identified the land as Waqf property. However, residents assert they were not consulted, and they were unaware of the commission’s findings until the land was officially listed as Waqf property in 2019. When residents attempted to pay their property taxes in 2022, they were informed that the land was considered Waqf property, leading to shock and renewed protests. Many found themselves unable to conduct transactions such as taking loans due to legal uncertainties.

Despite a court intervention allowing residents to pay taxes, the Waqf Board listed the residents asencroachers, aggravating the situation. The issue gained widespread attention when Major Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of the Syro-Malabar Church and the Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) sent letters to the Joint Secretary of the Lok Sabha Secretariat. They appealed for an amendment to the Waqf Act of 1995, calling the Waqf Board’s claims unjust and unconstitutional. The KCBC insisted that the law should be amended to protect these families from displacement.

Pinarayi Govt Passes Resolution Opposing Waqf Amendment Bill

In a parallel development, the Kerala Legislative Assembly, on 14 October 2024, unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union government to withdraw the Waqf Amendment Bill 2024. The resolution argued that the bill undermines secular principles and threatens the democratic values enshrined in the federal structure of the Constitution. It contended that the proposed amendments would weaken the authority of state Waqf Boards and infringe on state rights by replacing elected members with a board of nominated officials.

Critics argue that the state government is diverting attention from the plight of the affected families by opposing the bill. This move is seen as a political strategy aimed at securing minority votes, rather than addressing the genuine concerns of those at risk of displacement. Observers point out that the assembly’s resolution fails to acknowledge the hardships faced by residents, some of whom trace their lineage in Munambam back over a century.

The Waqf dispute is not limited to Cherai and Munambam, as similar cases of Waqf claims over properties have been reported across India. Without intervention, families who have held land for generations could face eviction. As the affected families continue their legal struggle to retain their ancestral land, questions about the fairness and enforcement of the Waqf Act remain a source of controversy and legal complexity in the region.

TNM Upset With Hindu Groups Standing In Solidarity With Christian Families

As the Christian families in Munambam, Kerala, continue their struggle against the Waqf Board’s claims on their ancestral land, The News Minute (TNM) seems more concerned with Hindu groups lending support to these distressed communities than addressing the genuine land rights issue. TNM’s coverage repeatedly emphasizes the presence of right-wing Hindu groups, like BJP-affiliated organizations, framing their involvement as an opportunistic attempt to exploit religious divisions, while glossing over the real fears and struggles of families at risk of losing their homes.

Instead of focusing on the alarming situation, TNM appears to be more troubled by the involvement of groups such as the BJP’s Minority Morcha and Yuva Morcha, which have openly supported the residents. By portraying this support as a calculated move to sway the Christian community towards the Sangh Parivar’s agenda, TNM diminishes the fact that many families have found allies in these groups during a time of need.

The presence of Hindu groups at the protests and their backing for the residents’ demands for Waqf law amendments is characterized by TNM as a communal ploy. Yet, the residents themselves have welcomed anyone who stands by them in their fight for justice, with some openly stating they will support those who help, regardless of their traditional political affiliations. The arrival of these groups is simply a response to a dire situation where the affected families, predominantly Christians, have felt ignored by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and other political entities that have failed to address their plight meaningfully.

TNM’s narrative seems to accuse the Hindu groups of attempting to frame the dispute as a conflict between Christians and Muslims while dismissing the legitimate concerns that the Waqf laws pose a threat to the rights of non-Muslim communities. Critics argue that this seems intent on shielding the state government and other political forces from accountability for their failure to protect the rights of the affected families.

Additionally, the news outlet’s criticism extends to the online campaigns led by Christian organizations like the Christian Association & Alliance for Social Action (CASA), which have been vocal about the need to amend Waqf laws. Instead of recognizing CASA’s efforts to advocate for the residents, TNM labels the group’s campaigns as potentially communal, thereby diverting attention away from the broader issue of unjust land claims.

The residents of Munambam have made it clear that they are not interested in communalizing the issue but are seeking allies in their fight for justice. For TNM to frame this solidarity as opportunistic or divisive only undermines the real battle at hand – securing the rights of families who have lived on this land for generations.

Kuki-Zo Body Support Naga Demand To Rollback Of ‘Arbitrary Creation’ Of 7 New Districts In Manipur

Kuki-Zo Body Support Naga Demand

In an important development, the Kuki-Zo community has expressed support for the Manipur-based United Naga Council’s (UNC) demand to rollback the “arbitrary creation” of seven new districts in the state in December 2016 and the reinstatement of the status quo.

In a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, the World Kuki-Zo Intellectual Council (WKZIC) demanded a rollback of the creation of all the new districts of Manipur after 1972 and a return to the original names prior to 1972 for ‘Justice’ for all the three communities—Meitei, Kuki-Zo, and Nagas—in Manipur.

Signed by five leaders of WKZIC including its President T.S. Haokip, the memorandum sought the President’s intervention to solve the long-pending “political issues and imbroglios” of Kukis, Meiteis, and Nagas in Manipur. Copies of the WKZIC memorandum were sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi.

Meanwhile, official sources said that an inconclusive tripartite talks on the UNC’s demand to roll back the creation of the seven new districts was held in New Delhi on October 12 between the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the state government and the Naga body. A Manipur government official said that in the October 12 meeting, it was decided that the next round of talks would be held on November 15 in the Senapati district.

After the MHA’s notice for the tripartite talks, the UNC earlier announced the temporary suspension of its 48-hour shutdown from midnight of October 3 in support of their demand.

The UNC had on September 11 issued an ultimatum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for redressal of the pending issue of the creation of seven new districts in Manipur in 2016 and warned of intense agitation if the matter was not resolved within 15 days. A UNC statement said that seven new districts were created arbitrarily by bifurcating parent districts on December 8, 2016, during the Congress regime without any information, consent or knowledge of the stakeholders.

It added that the seven new districts were created “dishonouring” the four memoranda between the government of Manipur and the Naga people besides the assurance from the Centre in 2011. In support of their demand, Naga bodies organised a series of protests, hartals, and economic blockades on all the National Highways and as many as ten rounds of tripartite talks on the issue were held between the Centre, the Manipur government and the UNC.

The Naga body had said that the last talks with the governments were held on March 9, 2019, with the assurance that a concrete proposal shall be placed by the Manipur government in the next round of talks, supposedly to be held by the last week of July 2019. The UNC said that a missive had been sent to the office of the Special Secretary, Northeast, MHA, for resumption of the tripartite talks on January 22, 2024, and a prompt reminder was sent on February 23 but received no response as of yet.

Naga people mostly inhabit six Manipur districts — Tamenglong, Chandel, Ukhrul, Kamjong, Noney and Senapati — which are along the Nagaland and Myanmar borders. During the 17-month-long ethnic unrest in Manipur between the non-tribal Meitei and the tribal Kuki-Zo community, the Naga-inhabited areas remained peaceful.

DMK Ally Velmurugan Criticizes DMK’s Hypocrisy In Appointing Non-Tamil Secretary To Udhayanidhi Stalin, Highlights Unfulfilled Election Promises On Prohibition

DMK Ally Velmurugan Criticizes DMK's Hypocrisy In Appointing Non-Tamil Secretary To Udhayanidhi Stalin

Tamizhaga Valvurimai Katchi (TVK) leader and MLA Velmurugan, an ally of the Secular Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu, has criticized the ruling DMK for its nepotism and hypocritical government policies. His remarks mark the fourth party within the alliance to express disdain and displeasure towards the ruling DMK.

In an interview with a private news channel, Velmurugan initially discussed his journey after leaving the PMK party. The conversation gradually shifted to the political landscape of Tamil Nadu and current events. When the host asked if the void left by former Chief Ministers J Jayalalithaa and M. Karunanidhi had been filled, Velmurugan, with indirect criticism, suggested that their absence is still felt in Tamil Nadu.

It should be noted here that following their demise, Edappadi K. Palaniswami from the AIADMK and Karunanidhi’s son, MK Stalin from the DMK, became Chief Minister, and currently, Karunanidhi’s grandson, Udhayanidhi Stalin, has been promoted to Deputy Chief Minister.

Later, he criticised the DMK for not implementing the promises made during the election, such as the caste census, lessening the liquor (TASMC) shops, appointing teachers, making nurses permanent staff, introducing the old pension scheme, and not allowing projects like hydrocarbon projects that harm Tamil Nadu.

Regarding the alcohol issue, Velmurugan stated that if the Chief Minister or the state’s machinery believes it is possible, Tamil Nadu can become alcohol-free, and the Chief Minister should take action. While it couldn’t be achieved immediately, the DMK’s election manifesto promised to close down liquor shops gradually. Three years have passed, and only due to the PMK’s initiative have around 500 TASMAC shops near state highways, schools, and temples been closed, indirectly indicating that the DMK has not fulfilled its promises of prohibiting alcohol in the state.

Later, he lamented, “They are appointing an IAS officer as MD of TASMAC under the secretaryship of prohibition enforcement wing. Tamil Nadu is the only state that has created a department to prohibit liquor and is using the same department’s IAS officers and IPS officers to investigate why the liquor shops’ revenue has decreased. Such conditions are not there in any other state.” He stated that if both the DMK and AIADMK believed it was appropriate, they could close the liquor shops in the state, as they both owned breweries.

When the host asked why political leaders, including the chief minister, are avoiding the closure of TASMAC shops, Velmurugan quickly responded, “Who runs the breweries? It’s the prominent leaders of the opposition, AIADMK, and the ruling DMK.”

He also indirectly highlighted the hypocrisy of the DMK, which repeatedly claims to be the guardians of Tamils, by questioning who was appointed as the secretary to Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, this question comes at the backdrop of appointing Pradeep Yadav. Velmurugan asked, “Who was recently appointed as the Secretary of Udayanidhi who has been taken charge as the Deputy Chief Minister in Tamil Nadu? Why are there no IAS officers in Tamil Nadu? Are there no qualified Tamils as secretaries? We should pay close attention to all this.”

INDI Ally VCK MP Thirumavalavan Equates Terror Groups Like Hamas To Freedom Fighters, Likens North Indians Of Chennai To Jews And Dalits As Palestinians

INDI Ally VCK MP Thirumavalavan Equates Terror Groups Like Hamas To Freedom Fighters, Likens North Indians Of Chennai To Jews And Dalits As Palestinians

Once again, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief and Chidambaram MP Thirumavalavan has sparked controversy by equating international terrorist organizations like Hamas, Hezbollah, and Houthi terrorists to freedom fighters who resort to armed struggle for self-defense. He has called on the Indian government to revise its pro-Israel stance by organizing a special demonstration in Chennai on 14 October 2024, to urge recognition of the Palestinian people’s demands.

Speaking at the demonstration, VCK chief Thirumavalavan promoted the “sons of the soil” theory, suggesting it contributed to the rise of militancy as a form of self-defense. He recounted how Palestinians initially welcomed displaced Jews and provided them asylum. However, after the establishment of Israel, supported by Britain and America, the Jewish population expanded by bringing displaced Jews from around the world. As the Jewish population grew, Palestinians were forced to leave their land, leading to conflict. Thirumavalavan argued that, in an effort to reclaim their homeland, displaced Palestinians formed various groups, including militant organizations, similar to the LTTE. They began to protest and formed the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) under Yasser Arafat as a freedom organization. In response to the Israel’s violent actions, they created militant groups like HAMAS, Hezbollah, and the Houthis to defend themselves against Israel.

Thirumavalavan said, “Generally they will say it as a terrorist organization, militant organization, then why was LTTE formed? Even after 25 years of struggle under the leadership of Selva in democratic way, the Sinhalese did not accept their demand. As there was need to speak in their language, armed groups appeared. Then what will the neighboring Islamic countries do without helping them? It will help them.”

He stated that initially, Palestinians ceded 40-45% of their land, but now Israel has taken over 90%, leaving only a small portion in the West Bank and Gaza. He then posed a question to the audience, “Now tell me, on whose side should we stand? Can you support Israel or the Jewish group that have driven out the Palestinians and occupied their land?”

Without delivering justice to the Palestinians, you cannot dismantle organizations like HAMAS and Hezbollah. We must always stand on the side of the victims in this situation, he said.

Thirumavalavan also compared north Indians residing in Sowcarpet, Chennai to Israelis and other Dalit residents of North Chennai to Palestinians.

What did the Jews do? They (Palestinians) gave them a piece of land and asked to stay within that. If we ask him (Marwaris) to stay within Sowcarpet, he should stay there.  What will happen if they expand to other areas like Anna Nagar and encroach entire Chennai? The Dalits, poor and the marginalized, those who stay on the banks of Cooum River are being shifted to Ottiyambakkam, Thoraipakkam, Semmenchery. This is called displacement. The natives of Chennai were shifted away to 40-50 kms saying that you’re being affected because of rains and floods. This is being done by the government itself. What happened there (Israel) was, as he (Jews) came, these people (Palestinians) had to flee. They attacked. Thousands of them were killed.“, he said.

Previously on 31 October 2023, a same stance was taken by VCK chief Thirumavalavan on a protest organized by the Federation of All Muslim Organisations and Political Parties condemned Israel’s attacks on Palestine. Over 3,000 members and leaders from these organizations gathered near Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, Chennai. They accused Israel of “encroaching upon Palestine” with support from the US, UK, and other nations, highlighting ongoing Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian people. The leaders also criticized India’s decision to abstain from voting on a UN resolution calling for a ceasefire.

The demonstration was led by Federation President P.A. Kaja Mohideen Baqavi. Prominent figures, including ManithaNeya Makkal Katchi President M.H. Jawahirullah, SDPI leader Nellai Mubarak, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan, CPM State Secretary K. Balakrishnan, and representatives from various political parties, also participated in the event.

Thirumavalavan spoke in an inflammatory fashion and supported Hamas in this war. Here is a transcript of his speech. “Israel is carrying out a brutal war of aggression. Israel must stop this war. The nations across the world, democratic countries are voicing their support for Israel to stop this brutality against the Palestinians.”

Resolution At UN That India Abstained From Voting

He said, “Recently at the UN Assembly, Jordan proposed a resolution, and 120 nations voted in favour of it. 14 nations voted against it. 45 countries including India abstained from voting. Even if we count the countries that abstained and those who voted against the resolution, it is only 60 countries. But those who supported the resolution make up 120 countries. The world makes us realise the truth. That the war carried out by Israel on Palestine and the Gaza Strip is unjust, cruel, and terrible and this war needs to stop immediately. This is the voice of the world, the voice of all the democratic nations of the world. As a means to support that voice, today we have congregated here in the thousands.” He added, “When asked why we abstained from voting, they said that in the Jordan Resolution, there is no mention of Hamas, they have not spoken about the attack they carried out. So we abstained, said Yojana Patel, the Indian representative.”

Israel – The Occupier Nation

He called Israel an occupier nation and said, “Israel has occupied Palestine, that is the historical truth. They were chased out of Germany and several other European countries. They entered Palestine with banners saying Germans stabbed us, don’t destroy our hope. The same people are the ones who created Israel and terrorising and suppressing people, they are the Jews.

He added, “Keeping aside the history of why they were chased out of Germany, the Jewish race is one which has only developed enmity with most of the countries in the world. Israel is not their ancestral land. Israel is not their motherland. With the help of superpowers like America, they occupied territory and created a country of their own and are killing and bringing about the genocide of the same Palestinians who gave them refuge.”

Comparing The Eelam War With That Of Palestine

Thirumavalavan compared the Srilankan Tamil issue with that of the Palestinians. He said, “Even in Eelam, the Singhalese are not the natives of that land. They went from India. But history has been hidden from all. They caused the genocide and massacre of the natives of that land, the Tamils. It continues to this day. The same thing has happened here (Palestine).”

He added, “In 2001, I attended a conference in Durban in South Africa. It was about opposing apartheid. Several Palestinians came there with banners. Even though I do not understand their language, I would stand with the Palestinians during their protests. I came across a flyer that was in English. They constantly spoke for freeing their land and requested the countries of the world to support them. Yasser Arafat, the leader of the Palestinian Liberation Movement would conduct exile Parliament and stress on these requests, same like how Eelam Tamils are having one.”

Hamas – A “Defence Force”

He called Hamas a defence force. He said, “We know that Hamas emerged as a contradictory movement of the Palestinian Liberation Movement. But that movement is the only one that protects the Palestinians. It is not a war-frenzy movement. It is not an occupier-frenzy movement. It is not a movement that hates other races. It did not start an attack on Israel unjustly. Hamas is a defence force that is there to protect Palestinians and Palestine’s land. It is being called a terrorist organisation and extremist organisation by the Sanathana forces in the United Nations Assembly.”

Justifying The Creation Of Hamas

Thirumavalavan also justified the reason for the creation of Hamas. He said, “What is the reason for the emergence of Hamas? Which country has been aggressed against/occupied by Hamas? On 7 October 2023, they carried out rocket strikes. It is not a war of aggression. It is a war against aggression. Shouldn’t India realize this? Shouldn’t America realise this? Is the attack carried out by Hamas a terror attack? or is the attack carried out by Israel a terror attack? Did the Palestinians occupy the Jewish nation or did the Jews occupy the Palestinian nation? Shouldn’t we know the answer to this question? It is a fact that the world knows. It is a historical fact that the Jews occupied the Palestinian nation.”

He also added, “Israel is an occupier nation created by the Jews with the support of America. Who is carrying out the terror attack here? Weren’t the Palestinians the ones who helped them when they came to Palestine raising their banners? Who is carrying out such a terrible attack with cluster bombs and phosphorus against the Palestinians who welcomed them? We are not gathered here on the basis of religion. We are united asking for justice. We are here to question the conscience of the countries of the world. Whenever there is a war between Israel and Palestine, America always comes forward to support Israel blindly.”

Condemning India’s stand On The War

He called India’s stand on the war something that was influenced by “Sanathana forces”. He said, “Today, our Indian nation has become a subordinate of America and has come forward to support Israel blindly. They support America’s stand. Indian politics is based on justice but it is supporting injustice. It is supporting Jews who are an occupier nation. It is against the Palestinians who are the sons of the soil (natives). The BJP government is looking at the Palestinians as Muslims alone. It is not looking at the justice on their side. We want to accuse the BJP, RSS’s Muslim hatred politics has made us take a stand against the Palestinians. They are not looking at this problem, this problem between Hamas and Israel as a fight between occupiers and natives. Should the Palestinian people come back to Palestine or not? Should they not condemn the actions of Israel which is preventing Palestinians from returning?”

Gaza – Comparison With Chennai

Thirumavalavan compared Gaza to Chennai and complained about how Israel was torturing the citizens. He said, “Gaza which is under the control of Hamas is a small strip of land that is 10km wide and 41km long. 25 lakh people are living in a place which is not even a fifth of Chennai’s land area. More than 1 crore people live in Chennai. For the past 25 days, Israel has been carrying out brutal attacks via air and land. Countries like America and India are watching the spectacle. Where will this lead to? Even if these people think, let the people of Palestine find a solution to the problem, even then the Palestinians will win. If America does not intervene, if their supporters do not intervene, if their army doesn’t go, if they do not help with their weapons, if they do not help financially, Hamas will win and take over Israel.”

He also added, “In the name of destroying LTTE, India, and America supported the Sinhalese and took a stand against the Tamils. In the same way, they named Hamas a terrorist organisation, and in the name of destroying Hamas, they are killing innocent Palestinians. Dead bodies are being transported in containers. They are burying dead bodies en masse. Reports indicate that 50000 pregnant women are unsafe and in dangerous conditions. They cut off the electricity, oil, and water. This is not just a war against terrorism, it is a genocide.”

He called for a gathering, a show of support similar to the gathering of numerous people in Kerala to express support for Palestine. He said even in Tamil Nadu, millions of people stand in opposition to Israel’s brutal war, and that this conflict needed to be halted promptly. He condemned India’s stance and that it must be altered, and efforts will be made to exert pressure on India to raise its voice against the continuation of the war.

Tighten Belts, No Room For Laxity In Polls: Congress Top Brass Drills Into Maha Leadership

Congress Top Brass Drills Into Maha Leadership for Maharashtra polls.

After the embarrassment faced in the recent Haryana polls, the Congress top leadership has cautioned Maharashtra leaders against any kind of complacency or cockiness in the upcoming state Assembly elections, party sources said on Monday.

Congress President and Leader of Opposition (Rajya Sabha) Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition (Lok Sabha), besides AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, summoned senior Maharashtra leaders to the national capital on Monday for urgent confabulations.

They included state party chief Nana F. Patole, Mumbai unit chief and MP Varsha Gaikwad, Leader of Opposition (Assembly) Vijay Wadettiwar, Congress Legislature Party Leader Balasaheb Thorat, and ex-CM Prithviraj Chavan. They all returned to Mumbai this afternoon for the Congress Parliamentary Board meeting scheduled for later on Monday.

Party sources here said that the Congress Manifesto and the combined pronouncement of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)-India block, comprising the Nationalist Congress Party (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT), and other smaller allies, were among the topics discussed.

Besides, the status of the seat-sharing formula among the big and small allies for the elections, the challenges posed by the ruling MahaYuti alliance, the pros and cons bedevilling both sides, etc, are also said to have figured in the tough deliberations held at Kharge’s home.

The discussions assume significance with the Election Commission of India (ECI) slated to sound the bugle for the polls to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly shortly.

Both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi have apparently conveyed to the state leaders in a no-nonsense manner the need to remain united, cooperate with allies to vanquish the MahaYuti, shun airs of overconfidence, and ensure victory without citing Haryana, where the Congress missed the opportunity to unseat the BJP by a few close whiskers.

For its part, the state delegation apprised the central leadership on the prevalent caste-community permutations and combinations, the impact of the Maratha-OBC upheavals on the polls, and the potential vote divisions with multiple groupings likely to enter the fray.

The state law-and-order situation, the insecurities among minorities, the blatant killings of ex-Congress Minister and ruling ally Nationalist Congress Party’s Baba Ziauddin Siddique and earlier SS-UBT leader Abhishek Ghosalkar during a Facebook Live interaction, plus other incidents that have shaken the people of the state cropped up.

In 2024, Maharashtra is stepping into 15th Assembly polls after a tumultuous five-year tenure that witnessed the break-down of two major parties – Shiv Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT), Nationalist Congress Party and NCP (SP).

There were unprecedented three CMs in the state, comprising an 80-hour-long two-man regime of CM Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, followed by MVA’s CM Uddhav Thackeray with Ajit Pawar as Deputy CM, then the toppling game of June 2022 that saw CM Eknath Shinde with Deputy CM Fadnavis and a year later even Ajit Pawar as the Deputy CM for a record 6th time.

After a decent performance in the Lok Sabha polls, when it bagged 31 (of 48) seats, the MVA is exuding supreme confidence in a repeat performance in the Assembly polls.

The elections would see a multitude of parties in the fray – the three main allies each of the MahaYuti and MVA plus their smaller partners, the upcoming groupings of Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) led by Prakash Ambedkar, the Marathas contemplating to enter the contests and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena of Raj Thackeray.

Besides, there will be other smaller parties in some local pockets, not to mention potential rebels from all parties, the host of independents and others who are likely to crowd the poll scene, and serve to split votes.

PhD Scholar Hands Over Complaint Letter Highlighting Faculty Misconduct, Bribery, And Student Issues To TN Guv During Convocation At Bharathiar University

PhD scholar exposes student exploitation at Bharathiar Univ.

A PhD scholar from Bharathiar University stirred significant attention during the university’s 39th convocation by presenting a letter of complaint to Tamil Nadu’s Governor, RN Ravi, while accepting his degree. The letter, representing the concerns of research scholars and students, outlines serious issues they face on campus, including allegations that some faculty members require students to perform household tasks.

The 39th convocation took place on 14 October 2024, in Coimbatore. During the ceremony, Prakash, a PhD scholar in English, spoke about the challenges faced by his fellow students at Bharathiar University. His petition, titled “Problems Faced by Research Scholars and Students of Bharathiyar University,” asserts that some guides do not view research scholars as academic equals. Instead, they impose domestic responsibilities such as washing dishes, caring for their children, and managing bank accounts. Additionally, they claim that the guidance offered is often insufficient.

The letter also raises concerns about the Adi Dravidar hostels, which are publicly managed, leading to a significant financial burden for Scheduled Caste students in terms of monthly mess fees. Additionally, Prakash reported that some guides suggest that scholars spend between fifty thousand and one lakh rupees during their viva. These scholars are pressured to provide money, food, and even gold to certain guides after successful examinations.

Furthermore, the complaint highlights that although students are charged for participation in Sports Day events, the university has not hosted such events in the last four years. While students and staff are restricted from using the sports facilities, they are being rented out to outsiders on weekends.

Later, speaking to the press, he noted that while there are two Adi Dravidar hostels, they are poorly maintained and functioning as a common hostel. As a result, funding from the government has been halted, leading officials to claim that there are no Adi Dravidar hostels available, additionally questions the allocation of one crore and where the funds are being directed.
