Censor Certificate Reveals ‘Amaran’ Produced By Kamal Haasan Features Distorted Map Of India

Censor Certificate Reveals 'Amaran' Produced By Kamal Haasan Features Distorted Map Of India

A leaked censor certificate for Sivakarthikeyan’s upcoming film Amaran, a tribute to martyred Major Mukund Varadarajan, reveals that the film promotes an inaccurate depiction of the Indian map. Netizens quickly criticised the film’s producer, Kamal Haasan, alleging the misrepresentation reflects anti-India sentiments. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has reportedly demanded edits, instructing the removal of the flawed map visuals and a change in dialogue.

Amaran – Deepavali Release

Kollywood actor Sivakarthikeyan is set to captivate audiences with his upcoming film “Amaran.” Inspired by the life of martyred army officer Major Mukund Varadarajan, featuring Sai Pallavi as the female lead. The theatrical trailer was released on 24 October 2024, and the army-themed storyline has already garnered an impressive response.

However, the inspiring narrative has not been without controversy. The film has recently completed its censorship process, and a censor certificate of the movie that went viral on social media displayed an inaccurate representation of the Indian map, leading to backlash from netizens, particularly targeting producer Kamal Haasan, who is also a full-time Kollywood actor and part-time politician.

Netizens criticized the certificate, arguing that the crew’s changes reflected derogatory and anti-India sentiments. The certificate stated, “Remove the visuals of the map, as it does not accurately represent the country,” and requested modifications to the dialogue from “And India rescues…” to “…annex aatchu.” This backlash comes in the wake of recent incidents in Tamil Nadu, where the ruling DMK misrepresented the Indian map by depicting parts of Jammu and Kashmir as belonging to Pakistan and China.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) granted the film a U/A rating, and its runtime is 169 minutes (2 hours and 49 minutes), suggesting that the screenplay needs to be particularly engaging to hold the audience’s attention. “Amaran” is written and directed by Rajkumar Periyasamy, known for his work on “Rangoon.”

Produced by full time actor and part time politician Kamal Haasan, R. Mahendran, and Sony Pictures International Productions, the film features a score by GV Prakash Kumar and was primarily shot in Kashmir. With significant buzz and the Diwali festival approaching, “Amaran” is anticipated to perform well at the box office on 31 October 2024.

Following the leak of the censor certificate, netizens lashed out at the production house. Here are some reactions.

It is noteworthy that Kamal Haasan in February 2018, had asked why India was afraid to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir following the Pulwama attack, which claimed the lives of 40 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans.

“Pakistanis Think Indian Army As Terrorists, Naxalism Is An Ideology”: Here Are Some Woke Gems Of Sai Pallavi

"Pakistanis Think Indian Army As Terrorists": Amaran Actress Sai Pallavi makes Woke Statements Go Viral Ahead Of Film Release

As cinephiles in Tamil Nadu gear up for Deepavali with the release of Amaran, a biopic on Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mukund Varadarajan, many question the involvement of actor Sai Pallavi who is known for equating Indian Army actions to terrorism, describing Naxalism as a legitimate “ideology,” and comparing the Kashmiri Pandit genocide to stray cow-smuggling incidents. Many argue that her role in a film honouring a national hero is at odds with her past remarks, questioning the choice of casting her in a patriotic narrative.

Questionable ‘Amaran’ Team

The film Amaran, a biopic on Major Mukund Varadarajan, is up for release on Deepavali Day, 31 October 2024. Ever since the trailer was released, netizens and fans have been analysing it because questionable names are associated with the film.

Who are these questionable people, you ask? The film is being produced by Raj Kamal Films, owned by Kamal Haasan, a full-time actor, part-time politician, DMK ally, and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder. The Kollywood film is distributed by Red Giant Movies, owned by the DMK first family.

Additionally, the film features actor Sai Pallavi, who rose to fame with her pimple-faced girl-next-door look in Premam.

At such a juncture, some old videos of Sai Pallavi exposing her wokeness and ignorance started making the rounds on the internet.

Here are snippets from a Telugu interview she had given a few years ago. These are some of the statements she makes in the videos.

Naxalism Is An Ideology

In what seems to be a video interview around the time her film Virata Parvam was released (2022) when asked by the interviewer how she felt about the naxal uniform and guns and if she had any sympathy towards them, she says, “It is an ideology. You might have an ideology but for me, violence is a wrong form of communication. I don’t think now that we can solve this only if we are violent. But at that time, they did not know how to express their problem to them. When there is a law, we have to see what is right and what is wrong. At that time, no one knows where to go. So, they formed a group for themselves, and their mindset is that they will only say what is right and what is wrong. We are not in that situation; it happened long back.”

Does Sai Pallavi realise that naxalism is still active in several parts of the country (yes, it has been cracked down by the Modi government)? Does she realise how it affected families in states like Chhattisgarh? Does she realise how far back the Naxal-affected states and communities were when they were thriving?

It looks like she has no clue of what Naxalism is, what the Naxalites have been doing – absolutely no clue. Her statement that ‘they didn’t know how to express their problem’ about Naxals is plain ridiculous. Perhaps she should spend time with families of security personnel killed by these ‘ideologues’ before spouting such nonsense.

Indian Army Is A Terrorist For Pakistanis

In the same video, she is seen saying, “People in Pakistan think that our army is a terrorist. Because they feel that they are there and they (the army) are harming them. For us, they are terrorists. So the perspective changes. I don’t understand violence. It is very difficult for me to understand it. It is very difficult for us to say what is right and what is wrong. At that time, they believed that justice will come only if we do this. Only if we do this, we can do good to our children and family.”

Can Sai Pallavi provide proof that the Indian Army crossed the border and killed civilians? Are Indians occupying Pakistani land? Maybe Sai Pallavi needs several history lessons – Pakistan refused to accept the mortal remains of its soldiers during the Kargil war. It was India and its army that gave them a decent burial.

Not only does Sai Pallavi expose her shocking ignorance, but her comments about the Indian Army are borderline seditious. How dare she equate our brave soldiers with terrorists while enjoying the freedom and security they provide?

Equating Kashmiri Pandit Genocide To Cow Smuggling

In the same interview, she is seen saying, “A few days ago Kashmir Files film was released. In the film, they showed how the Pandits were killed at that time. Coming to more recent times, during COVID, if you are taking a religious conflict comparison, recently, someone was taking a cow in a vehicle. The ones driving the vehicle were Muslims. Some people lynched them and made them say, Jai Shri Ram. I cannot find the difference between what happened then and now. So if you ask me if leftists or rightists are good, they are not good if there is no justice on either side. When you are a good human being, whichever side you are on, everything becomes neutral.”

It cannot get worse than this – how can a sane person even compare genocide with beating up a cow smuggler? Trivializing a mass murder must be made a crime. Does she even know who Kashmiri Pandits are, does she know what they went through – should Sai Pallavi be made to relive the horrors of Raliv, Galiv, Ya Chaliv for her to understand and empathise with the Kashmiri Hindus?

Her comparison of the two situations shows her callous disregard for the systematic ethnic cleansing of an entire community. The sheer audacity to dismiss the systematic genocide of Kashmiri Hindus by comparing it to random criminal incidents shows either profound stupidity or malicious intent. Which is it, Pallavi?

Sai Pallavi’s Choice Of Films So Far

Shyam Singha Roy, released in 2021, was blatantly anti-Hindu and anti-Brahmin. The story is overtly Hinduphobic and vividly expressed through the lead character “Shyam”‘s experiences with Hindu traditions. In this film, Hindu traditions are not just inaccurately depicted; they are deliberately twisted to provoke disgust. The usual tropes of a “social justice hero” film – untouchability, the evil Brahmin, the exploitative Devadasi system – these are manipulated to show Hindus and Hinduism in the worst possible light.

Compounding this further e grim reality is the portrayal of a corrupt and evil Brahmin pandit, who views the Devadasis as sex slaves and engages in paedophilic acts. It seems like Sai Pallavi’s journey towards wokeness began here.

Her next film, Virata Parvam which was released in 2022 is based on Naxalism – the perfect next step. While the director claims he did not intend to romanticize naxalism, he also says, “Sticking to the facts would have made the film a docu-drama. He introduced a love story for cinematic appeal.”  The story revolves around the heroine played by Sai Pallavi who falls in love with a naxalite (the lead) because of his poetry and in a bid to make him reciprocate her love, she dedicates herself to the “cause”! <Slow claps>

Who better than Sai Pallavi who thinks naxalism is an ideology similar to “peace” taken up by people who wanted to get their demands met to play the female lead role? Oh and, while she philosophizes about ‘violence being wrong’, she had no problem collecting a paycheck for romanticizing Naxal violence in Virata Parvam. Talk about selective morality!

First Shyam Singha Roy’s Hindu-bashing, then romanticizing Naxals in Virata Parvam, and followed by that interview – there’s clearly a pattern here. Sai Pallavi seems to have found her niche in peddling anti-Hindu, anti-national narratives while masquerading as a “character artist”.

The film Amaran seems to once again contain elements that are very visibly anti-Brahmin and anti-Indian, and the trailer does not appear to do justice to Major Mukund Varadarajan’s and his family’s supreme sacrifice. What’s more outrageous is that Sai Pallavi, who can’t tell the difference between terrorists and our armed forces, is a part of Major Mukund Varadarajan’s biopic. Is this some sick joke?

She is also said to be playing the role of Ma Sita in an upcoming film. Will Ma Sita be portrayed as a woke woman or will she distort the character and the film in some other way?

INC Kerala Schooled By Netizens For Attempting To Set False Narratives On BRICS Group Photo

INC Kerala Schooled By Netizens For Attempting To Set False Narratives On BRICS Group Photo

The Kerala Congress is once again being mocked and schooled by netizens for trying to push narratives suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was neglected at the BRICS summit. They shared a departure video featuring leaders posing for a photo at the closing ceremony, with a borderline vulgar caption —”Unable to Spot G.” However, netizens were quick to react and slam the Congress for peddling fake rhetoric.

This blunt and meaningless post from Congress appears to be a reaction to recent accusations from the BJP. The BJP has alleged that Congress disrespected its president, Mallikarjun Kharge, after a video showed the Dalit leader waiting outside while Priyanka Gandhi filed her nomination papers for the Wayanad bypolls. This video was circulated by several BJP leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, to suggest that Congress harbours animosity toward Dalits.

In this context, the Kerala Congress shared a video on its X account on 24 October 2024, captioned “Unable to Spot G. This is terrible. Mein kabhi dilse maaf nahi karoonga!”

But what actually happened?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 16th BRICS Summit and held bilateral meetings with leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He arrived in Kazan on 22  October and departed on 23 October, where he received a warm welcome from Tatarstan’s Head, Rustam Minnikhanov. During his address, PM Modi highlighted India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy, advocating for a peaceful resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict while addressing global challenges such as terrorism and climate change. He urged a unified approach to combating terrorism without double standards and discussed India’s green initiatives, inviting BRICS nations to join these efforts.

So, the netizens expressed sympathy for Congress, pointing out that it lacks the solid content that the BJP uses to attract attention, leaving Congress to resort to ineffective tactics even as the opposition party.

Here are some of the posts where netizens schooled Congress

Central Govt Employees To Get Additional Compassionate Pension After 80

Central Govt Employees To Get Additional Compassionate Pension After 80

Central government pensioners aged 80 and older will qualify for an additional pension called compassionate allowance, according to a recent notification from the Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW), under the Ministry of Personnel, PG and Pensions.

DoPPW has also issued new guidelines for central government civil service retirees aged 80 to access these supplementary benefits. The guidelines are aimed at simplifying the process for distributing these additional allowances.

As per the provisions of Sub Rule 6 of Rule 44 of CCS(Pension) Rules 2021 [erstwhile Rule 49(2-A) of CCS(Pension) Rules 1972], after completion of eighty years of age or above by a retired government servant, in addition to a pension or a compassionate allowance admissible under the rules.

Accordingly, senior citizens aged 80 to 85 are eligible for 20 per cent of basic pension/compassionate allowance, while those from 85 to 90 years of age will receive 30 per cent.

The elderly from 90 to 95 years of age will qualify for 40 per cent of the basic pension/compassionate allowance, and those between 95 and 100 years will get 50 per cent. Super seniors living 100 years or more will be eligible for 100 per cent of basic pension/compassionate allowance.

“For example, a pensioner born on August 20, 1942 shall be eligible for additional pension at the rate of twenty percent of the basic pension with effect from August 1, 2022. A pensioner born on August 1, 1942 shall also be eligible for additional pension at the rate of twenty percent of the basic pension with effect from August 1, 2022,” the notification read.

Further, the DoPPW notification stated that the additional pension or compassionate allowance would be effective from the first day of the month when the pensioner reaches the designated age.

This additional pension payment is designed to assist pensioners in managing the rising cost of living often associated with ageing. To ensure that all eligible pensioners receive their rightful benefits without delay, the DoPPW has also instructed all departments and banks involved in pension disbursement to disseminate information regarding changes, the notification said.

Govt Officials Sing Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu With Multiple Mistakes At Event Presided By DMK Scion Udhayanidhi Stalin, Claims It Was “Technical Fault”

Govt Officials Sing Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu With Multiple Mistakes At Event Presided By DMK Scion Udhayanidhi Stalin, Claims It Was "Technical Fault"

When Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi participated in a function where the singers missed the phrase “Dravida Nal Thirunadu” from the official state song, ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu,’ Dravidianists and Periyarists criticized the Governor for no fault of his, suggesting he was indirectly imposing “Hindi.” However, at a recent government meeting on 25 October 2024, attended by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, some phrases were also missed, yet the same critics remained silent. The Deputy CM downplayed the incident, stating, “There’s nothing wrong with the singing. Don’t stir up any controversy,” when addressing the media.

“They didn’t sing wrongly. It was a technical fault. Mic was not working properly. At 2-3 places, their voice was not audible. So, they sang the Tamil Thai Vazhthu from the beginning again. After that the National Anthem was also sung properly.“, Udhayanidhi Stalin said.

Recently, a controversy erupted during the Hindi Month valedictory function at Doordarshan Kendra in Chennai, where the singers mistakenly omitted the line “Thekkanamum adhil sirantha Dravida nal thiru naadum,” which translates to “the great Dravidian nation in the Deccan,” from the state anthem.

Chief Minister MK Stalin swiftly condemned this omission and wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He argued that celebrating Hindi Month in non-Hindi-speaking states is perceived as diminishing other languages and suggested that such events should be discontinued. Instead, he advocated for promoting local language months in their respective states.

Cheif Minister MK Stalin via his official X account stated, “I strongly condemn the celebration of Hindi Month valedictory function along with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Chennai Doordarshan. Hon’ble @PMOIndia, The Constitution of India does not grant national language status to any language. In a multilingual nation, celebrating Hindi Month in non-Hindi speaking states is seen as an attempt to belittle other languages.”

He recommended that, “Therefore, I suggest that holding such Hindi-oriented events in non-Hindi speaking states could be avoided, and instead, the celebration of the local language month in the respective states should be encouraged.”

However, Stalin’s criticisms extended beyond the valedictory celebration of Hindi month; he also accused Governor RN Ravi of removing the term “Dravidian” from the anthem under the pretext of celebrating Hindi.

Describing the governor as having a “Dravidian allergy,” Stalin called for his recall, claiming he had “deliberately insulted” the people of Tamil Nadu.

In another post, Chief Minister MK Stalin stated, “Is he Governor? or Aryan? Removing the word Dravidian and reciting Tamil Thai anthem is against the law of Tamil Nadu! A person who acts according to his will and not act according to the law is not fit to hold that office. In the guise of celebrating Hindi, the governor is insulting the unity of the country and the people of different races living in this land!”

“Will the governor, who suffers from Dravidian allergy, leave out Dravidian in the national anthem? The Union Government should immediately recall the Governor who is deliberately insulting Tamil Nadu and the sentiments of the people of Tamil Nadu!” He further added.

However, on 25 October 2024, the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu was sung incorrectly once again at a government function issuing certificates for the Chief Minister’s Fellowship Programme, which Deputy Chief Minister and DMK scion Udhayanidhi Stalin himself oversaw. Some singers mispronounced phrases, prompting a re-performance to correct the errors. During a press conference, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi claimed that the issues stemmed from technical difficulties, stating that “the mic wasn’t working properly, affecting the sound.” He ensured that the Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu was sung correctly, followed by the National Anthem. “Do not make this an unnecessary issue out of it,” he concluded.

Now, netizens are mocking the DMK and its supporters, questioning whether they will condemn their own leader for not singing properly. This situation highlights how the Dravidian parties have created an environment in the state where even the official song is not sung correctly.

Madurai Bench Of Madras HC Seeks Centre, TN Response On Regulatory Body For Christian Institutions, Cites Fund Misuse

Madurai Bench Of Madras High Court Seeks Centre, TN Response On Regulatory Body For Christian Institutions, Cites Fund Misuse conversion to christianity

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, on 23 October 2024, directed the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and Tamil Nadu’s Chief Secretary to present their stance on creating a statutory body to regulate Christian institutions. Justice N Sathish Kumar issued the directive while hearing multiple petitions related to the appointment of a correspondent at Scott Christian College, Kanniyakumari, and the handling of employee salaries.

The judge highlighted that, unlike Hindu and Muslim charitable endowments, Christian institutions lack comprehensive statutory regulation. He observed that the court has encountered frequent instances of mismanagement and misuse of church assets and funds, often used by those in power to defend their positions through litigation. Although courts periodically appoint temporary administrators, the judge emphasized the need for a permanent statutory board to ensure accountability in Christian institutions.

The petitions included one filed by Baiju Nijat Pal from Nagercoil, who claimed a court order to appoint him as college correspondent had not been implemented. The judge also addressed accusations against a CSI bishop for allegedly blocking an appointment without proven grounds, noting that such arbitrary decisions seemed to stem from internal rules meant to maintain control over the administration.

Justice Kumar stressed the importance of safeguarding assets and funds of Christian institutions, given their significant public contributions to education and healthcare. He concluded by directing the Union and state governments to submit detailed reports on establishing a regulatory board for Christian institutions and adjourned the case to 18 November 2024 for further hearing.

OpenAI Plans To Launch New Powerful AI Model ‘Orion’ By December 2024

OpenAI Plans To Launch New Powerful AI Model 'Orion' By December 2024

ChatGPT maker OpenAI is reportedly planning to launch its next AI model called ‘Orion’ in December this year which is potentially up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4.

According to a report in The Verge, unlike the release of OpenAI’s last two models—GPT-4o and o1—Orion won’t initially be widely available through ChatGPT.

The report, citing sources, mentioned that the Sam Altman-run AI company is planning to grant access to companies first to help them build their own products and features.

OpenAI or its CEO Altman were yet to react to the report. According to the report, Microsoft is “preparing to host Orion on Azure as early as November”. Microsoft also declined to comment.

“The company’s goal is to combine its LLMs over time to create an even more capable model that could eventually be called artificial general intelligence, or AGI,” the report mentioned.

The release of Orion comes as OpenAI, which has secured a historic $6.6 billion funding at a $157 billion valuation, is restructuring itself as a for-profit entity.

Last month, three top executives — including Chief Technical Officer Mira Murati — left the ChatGPT developer. Of the 13 people who helped found OpenAI in 2015, only three now remain at the company.

According to reports, Murati is raising venture capitalists’ money to finance her AI startup. Previous investor Thrive Capital led the new funding in OpenAI.

The VC firm invested around $1.3 billion. Microsoft reportedly invested less than $1 billion, while Nvidia pledged $100 million, and SoftBank reportedly invested $500 million.

“The new funding will allow us to double down on our leadership in frontier AI research, increase compute capacity, and continue building tools that help people solve hard problems,” the company wrote in a blog post.

Chennai Housing Board Complex In Shambles Just A Year After Inauguration, Residents Protest Poor Construction

Chennai Housing Board Complex In Shambles Just A Year After Inauguration, Residents Protest Poor Construction

Residents of the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board housing complex in Moolakothalam, Chennai, staged a sit-in protest to express their frustration with the DMK government. They lamented their plight just a year after the complex’s inauguration. They noted that the cement floor comes off with a simple scratch, pointed out a hole in the concrete floor on the fourth level, which exposes the floor below, and highlighted that the plumbing works were inferior. The complex, which cost ₹138.29 crore to build, is in dire disrepair.

Residents living in huts in Ramdas Nagar, near the Moolakothalam crematorium, have requested that the government build new homes in the same area to prevent disruption to their livelihoods. The government identified 35 acres of land near the crematorium, reserving 23 acres for its use. Under the Prime Minister’s Housing for All initiative, the government plans to construct 1,044 apartments across 13 floors on 12 acres at a cost of Rs 138.29 crore.

The project, initiated in 2018 during the ADMK administration, was completed in 2020. However, delays arose due to the Pollution Control Board and the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) failing to provide essential services like drinking water, sewage, and electricity connections, which postponed the handover of the homes.

After the DMK took power, the Pollution Control Board and CMDA addressed these issues by installing drinking water, sewage, electricity connections, dryers, and perimeter walls. Chief Minister Stalin inaugurated the complex via video in July 2023.

Despite the inauguration, residents of Ramadas Nagar protested against moving into the new flats, claiming the costs were higher than expected. They demanded an exemption from the ₹4.70 lakh fee charged to each beneficiary, stating they could afford only ₹1.50 lakh. The Urban Habitat Development Board facilitated this initiative.

However, there have been allegations of substandard construction. Within a year of the inauguration, the cement coating began to fall off when touched, PVC windows and doors were broken, and many units lacked doors. The residences have deteriorated further due to leaking rainwater, exposed electrical wires, and a non-functional lift, raising concerns about the building’s stability. Each block is equipped with two lifts, but only one is operational, and residents report being warned that if more than four people use it at once, it could malfunction and fall.

In response, residents besieged officials from the Urban Habitat Development Board, demanding urgent resolutions and inspections by IIT officials to assess the quality of the construction.

Following negotiations with board officials and police, the residents eventually dispersed. They expressed frustration over the lack of basic facilities such as electricity, drinking water, and functional doors. The lifts do not operate at night, and with no water in the pipes, residents must climb 4-5 floors to carry water in jugs. They live in fear due to issues like holes in the upper floors that expose the levels below.

One of the residents said, “There’s a large hole in the floor between the third and fourth floor. A concrete floor will last for minimum fifty years without developing holes, but this was constructed only four or five years ago. However, within that period, the hole appears. We can scratch the concrete floor with our hands, it only has sand. It seems there has been significant corruption in the construction of this building, as many steps have cracked.”

Another resident expressed frustration, saying, “There are no windows, and all the bathroom doors are broken; if you try to open, they just come off in your hand. Additionally, whenever we try to pump water, the pipes break and leak, water comes to flood the ground floor but not reaching the upper levels. Whenever we ask about it, we’ve been told for a month now, ‘It will come.'”

She continued, “The lift isn’t working, and they tell us to carry everything by hand. They start to operate lift at 10 AM and close at 9 PM, but we don’t know why. Workers have to carry their goods up to the eleventh floor by hand, and he peaks like it a law (carry by hand). There’s no response to issues with water and electricity, and whenever we call about the broken facilities, they just say they’ll come nothing more.”

After Claiming Sale Of 2000 Acres Of Temple Land By Podhu Dikshitars, HR&CE Claims 18 Acres Sold, Temple Activist Challenges HR&CE’s Allegation

After Claiming Sale Of 2000 Acres Of Temple Land By Podhu Dikshitars, HR&CE Claims 18 Acres Sold, Temple Activist Challenges HR&CE Allegation

Controversy has erupted over the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department’s statements before the Madras High Court regarding land sales belonging to the Natarajar Temple in Chidambaram. The HR&CE Department initially claimed that the Podhu Dikshitars, the traditional temple custodians, sold over 2,000 acres of temple land—a statement that has now been drastically revised to just 18 acres, sparking accusations of deception.

During a hearing on 19 September 2024, the HR&CE Special Government Pleader informed the court that the temple’s low annual revenue of ₹93,000 was due to extensive land sales allegedly carried out by the Podhu Dikshitars, amounting to more than 2,000 acres. The division bench, taken aback by this substantial figure, demanded concrete proof to substantiate the claim.

On 24 October 2024, when the case resumed, the HR&CE Department altered its stance, now stating that only 18 acres of temple land had been sold—12.5 acres to Sri Ramulu Naidu and another 5.5 acres to Annamalai University, in transactions that took place decades ago in 1974, 1985, and 1988. The drastic reduction from 2,000 acres to 18 acres, representing less than 1% of the initial claim, has intensified criticism of the department, with many questioning its credibility and calling the move a shameless fraud.

Senior counsel C.S. Vaidyanathan, representing the Podhu Dikshitars, denied any sale of temple property, countering the HR&CE’s accusations and requesting an independent inquiry by a retired High Court judge to confirm the temple’s land holdings. He also asserted that all temple jewelry was accounted for, dismissing any suggestions of mismanagement.
The Podhu Dikshitars also filed a sealed cover detailing the temple’s revenue and expenditures for the years 2018 to 2022, as directed by the court.

The bench has ordered the Dikshitars to submit a counter affidavit to the HR&CE report and has adjourned the case until 14 November 2024. With accusations of fraud and deception mounting, the HR&CE Department faces intense public scrutiny over its handling of the case, as well as broader concerns about the management of Hindu temple assets in Tamil Nadu.

The Podhu Dikshitars have refuted the Tamil Nadu government’s claims before the Madras High Court that they sold land belonging to Chidambaram’s Natarajar Temple. U Vengatesa Dikshitar, temple committee secretary, and lawyer G Chandrasekhar explained that temple lands, totaling around 3,000 acres, are controlled by a special tahsildar under a government order, with income from these lands sometimes directly allocated to TANGEDCO for electricity bills.

India Saved Pilferages Worth $40 Bn In Last 8 Years With DBT Schemes: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

India Saved Pilferages Worth $40 Bn In Last 8 Years With DBT Schemes: FM Nirmala Sitharaman

India saved pilferages worth $40 billion in the last eight years with the government’s Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes, according to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

Speaking at the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania, during her US visit this week, the minister said over 51 ministries and departments in the central government now use various DBT schemes.

More than $450 billion have been transferred cumulatively in the last eight years via the unique government scheme to date, she informed. “As finance minister, I need to stop the pilferage. I must ensure every taxpayer’s rupee is spent properly and accounted for properly. I can’t have pilferages taking over,” she told the gathering.

Through Aadhaar-linked DBT, launched in 2013, cash benefits from various welfare schemes are directly transferred into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, reducing the need for multiple documents and eliminating duplicate or fake beneficiaries.

As part of the PM-KISAN scheme, the world’s largest DBT scheme, more than ₹3.04 lakh crore has already been disbursed into the accounts of more than 11 crore farmers across the nation. With the release of the 17th installment, the total amount transferred to the beneficiaries since the scheme’s inception will cross ₹3.24 lakh crore.

This initiative is one of the world’s largest DBT schemes, and it leverages digital platforms for transparent enrollment and transfer of welfare funds to farmers.

PM-KISAN has ended its reliance on moneylenders and has fostered sustainable farming practices. By eliminating intermediaries, the scheme ensures equitable support reaches all farmers, marking a significant step towards agricultural empowerment and financial inclusion.

Also, the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) promotes financial inclusion, opening over 523 million bank accounts and bringing marginalised sections into the formal financial system.

According to the government, this Aadhaar-driven approach has empowered people and led to significant savings for the public exchequer by cleansing scheme databases, removing millions of fake, non-existent, and ineligible beneficiaries across multiple government ministries and departments.

For example, Aadhaar-driven DBT has eliminated over 4.15 crore fake LPG connections and 5.03 crore duplicate ration cards, streamlining the distribution of essential services like cooking gas and food subsidies.
