Sanitation Workers Face Discrimination At Event Led By DMK Minister Raja Kannappan

The ruling DMK government is facing sharp criticism following an incident on 14 April 2025—Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary—where sanitation workers were allegedly subjected to discriminatory treatment during an event meant to promote equality. The controversy centers around Milk and Dairy Development Minister R.S. Rajakannappan, who oversaw the event.

More than 500 sanitation workers were invited to the function to honor their contributions, but instead of receiving equal treatment, they were made to wait over an hour for food. They were also segregated into a separate dining rows and not served until after the officials—including Ramanathapuram MLA and DMK Minister Raja Kannappan—had finished their meals and left the venue. Even in the video footage, while the minister dined comfortably in the front row, the two rows behind—where the sanitation workers were seated—hadn’t even been provided with banana leaves for serving food.

This perceived humiliation sparked anger and disappointment among the workers, who questioned the sincerity of the event’s theme of equality. Many voiced their frustration, asking why discrimination persisted even on a day dedicated to Ambedkar’s ideals of justice and social equity.

One upset worker asked, “They served food on banana leaves for the front row alone, but why weren’t the front and back three rows given any? Are we here to eat leftovers? Can’t we cook and eat at home? You tell us. We came here at 8 o’clock, and we were given was a water bottle and a packet of biscuits—not even tea. Who are we supposed to tell this to? Is this for you invited us?”

Earlier, an “Equality Day Pledge Ceremony” was held at the Ramanathapuram Collectorate Hall to commemorate Ambedkar’s legacy. The event was presided over by Collector Simranjeet Singh Kalon and District Revenue Officer Govindarajalu, with participation from various government departments. Officials, including Superintendent Shanmuganathan from the Primary Education Office, took the pledge promoting equality and social justice.

Kerala: Pastor John Jebaraj Who Was Booked Under POCSO For Sexual Assault Of Two Minor Girls, Arrested

John Jebaraj, a 37-year-old pastor from Coimbatore’s Kings Generation Church, was arrested in Kerala’s Munnar on Saturday (12 April 2025)  evening in connection with the alleged sexual assault of two minors. The accused, who has a significant social media following, had been evading arrest for several months before being tracked down by the Central All Women Police Station of Coimbatore.

Jebaraj was produced before a court on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody. He has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, with sections related to aggravated sexual assault invoked against him.

The Coimbatore City Police had formed multiple teams to locate Jebaraj after he went underground following the registration of the case. A lookout notice was also issued to prevent him from fleeing the country.

According to police sources, the alleged assaults took place during a party at Jebaraj’s residence in Coimbatore in May 2023. One of the victims recently disclosed the incident to a relative, leading to a formal complaint being filed at the Central All Women Police Station.

Jebaraj had recently approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail, denying all charges. In his petition, he claimed that his estranged wife was behind the allegations. The couple is currently undergoing divorce proceedings.

The arrest comes days after a Punjab pastor, Bajinder Singh, was sentenced to life imprisonment in a 2018 rape case. Singh had allegedly lured the survivor with promises of taking her abroad before assaulting her at his Mohali home. The survivor had also accused him of recording the act and threatening to leak the video.

A senior police officer confirmed that one minor girl has submitted a complaint to the Child Welfare Committee and that the matter was under investigation.

Behind The Red Curtain: The Dark Disgusting Secrets Of Mao Zedong’s Personal Life

While the Communist Party often highlights Mao Zedong—the first Chairman of the People’s Republic of China—as a revolutionary icon who led the Long March, resisted both the Kuomintang and Japanese occupation, launched the Cultural Revolution, and helped shape a new era for modern China, his private life painted a far more controversial and complex portrait. Behind the veil of public heroism lay personal habits and behaviors marked by contradiction, indulgence, and disturbing excesses.

What follows is a collection of reported facts and allegations, many of which were documented or corroborated by individuals from Mao’s inner circle.

“Replenishing The Yang”: Mao’s Pursuit Of Vitality

As Mao aged, his health began to decline. Yet he remained convinced that intimacy with young women could restore his strength and vitality. He often spoke of the traditional yin-yang philosophy, suggesting that physical contact with young partners would replenish his energy. His doctors objected, but Mao persisted.

He even commissioned a special bed, slanted at an angle, and required his partners to read a classical Chinese text on sexuality, The Plain Girl’s Secret Way, before engaging with him. Many of these young women later suffered from untreated infections like STD’s—yet some perceived this as a mark of distinction, believing they had served the revolutionary cause in an unusual way. This was later disclosed in The Private Life of Chairman Mao, a memoir by Li Zhi-Sui, Mao’s personal physician.

A Troubling Relationship: Mao and the Young Dancer

One of Mao Zedong’s most controversial and troubling associations began in 1962, when he initiated a relationship with a 14-year-old performer named Chen Luwen. Chen, who later referred to herself as an “imperial concubine,” was a member of a performance troupe that entertained military personnel. At the time, Mao was 69 years old and would summon her to his private quarters under the guise of having her serve tea.

Her parents, horrified upon discovering the relationship, were unable to protest in the midst of the Cultural Revolution—where any critique of the Chairman could mean death. The relationship continued for years until Mao’s wife intervened, forcing him to end the affair and arrange for Chen’s quiet exit from public view.

Art, Control, and Nude Ballets

Mao Zedong maintained a troupe of performers known as the Cultural Work Troupe—young women selected not only for their artistic talents but largely for their physical appeal and discretion. On certain occasions, he would bring them to his private pool, where they were reportedly instructed to perform nude synchronized swimming routines. More frequently, Mao preferred ballroom dancing, an activity considered elitist by the standards of the time, yet tolerated in his case. These gatherings were coordinated by Vice Chairman Wang Dongxing and held at a venue called the Spring Lotus Chamber. During these events, Mao would dance with the women until he chose one to accompany him privately. Eventually, a bed was placed in an adjoining room to accommodate these encounters. These acts were largely shielded from the public eye, yet within elite circles, it was understood that these performances were part of Mao’s eccentric and indulgent lifestyle was another ugliest truth.

Personnel Mistress – Zhang Yufeng

Mao’s favorite mistress, Zhang Yufeng, began her relationship with him at age 16. Over time, she became his closest aide, acting as gatekeeper for all communication—including with Mao’s own wife, Jiang Qing. Zhang’s influence extended even to finances, controlling accounts and purchases for the Chairman’s household. Her control symbolized just how blurred the lines were between personal relationships and political power in Mao’s final years.

Mao’s wife, Jiang Qing, wasn’t content to remain humiliated. Taking inspiration from powerful women of China’s past, she is said to have sought relationships of her own—with writers, artists, and even a renowned table tennis player. Though mostly kept from public view, her private rebellion underscored the deep fractures in the Chairman’s household.

Given the documented relationships Mao Zedong had with significantly underage girls, including a well-known instance involving a 14-year-old, and later with 16-year-old it raises serious ethical and moral concerns. By today’s standards and definitions, such behavior would indeed be considered predatory and fall under the category of pedophilia.

Offering 10 Million Chinese Women to the U.S. For Positive Bilateral Trade

During a late-night diplomatic meeting on 17 February 1973, at his residence, Chairman Mao Zedong made a shocking and controversial suggestion to U.S. National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger. According to declassified documents released by the U.S. State Department, Mao proposed sending 10 million Chinese women to the United States as a way to stimulate bilateral trade and, half-jokingly, to burden the U.S. with a population challenge similar to China’s.

Mao remarked that China was economically struggling and had little to offer in trade, but it had an “excess” of women. Initially, he mentioned sending “thousands,” but quickly escalated the number to “10 million,” prompting laughter from those present, including Premier Zhou Enlai. Dr. Kissinger responded in kind, joking that the U.S. did not impose any “quotas” or “tariffs” on Chinese women, which added to the levity of the conversation.

Though Dr. Kissinger attempted to steer the discussion toward global strategic concerns and the Soviet threat, Mao repeatedly returned to his peculiar proposition, demonstrating both his unorthodox diplomatic style and the complex dynamics of Sino-American relations during that era.

A Leader with Unusual Habits

Mao was infamous for his rejection of modern hygiene. He refused to brush his teeth, claiming tigers never did—and so shouldn’t he. Instead, he swished tea around in his mouth. Over time, plaque buildup and infection led to serious dental issues. His physicians pleaded with him to adopt basic oral hygiene, but Mao consistently returned to his old routine was one of his sick nature.

Rejecting Toilets: Mao’s Rural Comforts

Despite owning modern amenities, Mao often avoided toilets, claiming they “smelled too much” and were unnatural. He preferred going into the woods, accompanied by aides who dug holes and guarded his privacy. Chronic constipation plagued Mao throughout his life, requiring regular medical intervention—even during the historic Long March, where his bodily challenges became part of political mythmaking.

When Mao visited Moscow in 1949, he expected a hero’s welcome from Joseph Stalin. Instead, he found himself isolated in a hotel room—and unknowingly studied. Soviet intelligence had rigged his toilet to collect samples of his waste for analysis, hoping to learn about Mao’s health and emotional state. Their findings remain secret, but the meeting that followed was tense and unproductive, signaling a rift between the two powers.

Mao Zedong has been labeled many things—revolutionary, thinker, statesman—but also a man riddled with contradictions. His personal life revealed stark contrasts to his public persona: he was both austere and indulgent, idealistic yet unpredictable, revered and feared in equal measure.

Foreign Invaders Exploited Internal Divisions In Indian Society, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat Says

RSS Chief Warns Against Divisive Forces In Vijayadasami Speech

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief, Dr Mohan Bhagwat, on Monday said that foreign invaders exploited internal divisions in Indian society and took advantage of it. Speaking after inaugurating the newly-constructed Sangh Bhawan in Karvalo Nagar, Bhagwat said, “For the last two thousand years, our society remained entangled in internal conflicts and differences. Foreign invaders took advantage of this disunity and defeated us.”

He also inaugurated the Bhimrao Ambedkar Auditorium within the Sangh office premises. Highlighting the importance of social unity, Bhagwat said the RSS does not work merely for itself but for society. “The Sangh’s work is not limited to the organisation. It is for everyone, for the whole country. We’ve seen many festive occasions, but such a large gathering is rare,” he said. Bhagwat said the Sangh strives to include every section of society in its efforts.

“This office will become a hub for uniting and connecting the various positive initiatives underway in society,” he added. He paid tribute to Dr B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, recalling the hardships Babasaheb faced from a young age. “Babasaheb endured great adversity throughout his life. He dedicated himself to uniting society,” Bhagwat said.

The RSS’ publicity chief said the new four-floor Sangh Bhawan has been constructed with thoughtful planning. “It includes a large library in the basement and ample parking. Ventilation has been carefully addressed, with windows placed strategically to allow natural light throughout the day,” he said. Bhagwat is scheduled to meet workers from the Sangh’s service department across six verticals on April 15 and 16. On April 15, he will visit the Koyla Nagar branch in eastern Kanpur, followed by Nirala Nagar on April 16.

On April 17, he will meet the state executive to discuss key focus areas ahead of the Sangh’s centenary year. These include civic responsibility, eco-friendly living, social harmony, family values, self-awareness, and a review of ongoing initiatives in the state.

How Grassroots Innovation Can Drive India’s Economic Transformation

India’s economic growth story has been defined by its ambitious national programmes, from MGNREGA to Skill India, which have strengthened rural livelihoods and lifted millions out of poverty. But for truly inclusive development, top-down policies must be complemented by bottom-up innovation. Across India, regions dependent on single industries are struggling with economic shifts, climate challenges, and changing consumer demand. Large-scale government programmes are essential.

But they often lack the flexibility to address specific needs of such regions. This is where local interventions led by NGOs and philanthropic partnerships can serve as testing grounds for broader economic transformation. One such initiative, ‘Supplemental Income for Tea Estate Workers’ in the Darjeeling Region, is proving that grassroots solutions can unlock new economic opportunities where traditional industries are failing. Spearheaded by the Darjeeling Welfare Society in partnership with the Gates Foundation and Grant Thornton Bharat, the project is offering a sustainable alternative for thousands of tea estate workers.

The Supplemental Income initiative is a structured intervention aimed at revitalizing nearly half of Darjeeling’s closed tea gardens through enterprise creation, vocational training and skill development, market linkages financial access and corporate partnerships and policy integration. The programme seeks to increase household incomes by up to 1.3 times while ensuring that displaced workers, particularly women, transition into sustainable community-led enterprises.

By equipping them with new skills, integrating them into formal markets, and securing policy and corporate partnerships, it is not just reviving livelihoods in the region but also creating a blueprint for economic resilience that can be replicated nationwide. Beyond single-commodity economies The biggest challenge in many rural economies is overdependence on a single industry. When that industry faces a downturn, the impact is devastating.

Key to long-term economic security is diversification and that is exactly what this initiative has demonstrated. Instead of relying solely on tea, workers in Darjeeling have been trained in alternative agriculture, food processing, handicrafts and small-scale enterprises. High-value crops like specialty mushrooms and supari are now being cultivated with strong market demand. Poultry farming and fruit processing are also generating stable incomes.

Meanwhile, traditional skills like weaving, soap-making and embroidery have been revived, integrating women-led businesses into digital and formal marketplaces. This shift from monoculture dependency to multi-sector engagement is not just about job creation, but also about building economic ecosystems that are resilient, adaptable and market-driven. India’s rural development strategy must go beyond welfare support and focus on enabling communities to build their own economic engines. Bridging the gap between government and markets For rural industries to thrive, access to markets and finance is just as crucial as skills.

One of the most significant takeaways from this initiative is its success in linking community enterprises with institutional buyers, digital platforms, and financial credit networks. By connecting small producers to government procurement schemes and e-commerce platforms, the project has ensured that their products find consistent demand. At the same time, access to microfinance and cooperative banking has enabled women entrepreneurs to expand their businesses, reducing dependence on exploitative informal lending. This approach echoes success of the self-help group (SHG) movement, which has mobilised over 100 million women into the formal economy. The same model can be expanded across sectors.

Potential is immense, but it requires structured interventions that bridge the gap between skill-building, financial access and market linkages. A scalable model for policymakers The real power of grassroots interventions lies in their ability to feed into larger policy frameworks. The supplemental income project in Darjeeling has already begun working with state livelihood missions, Nabard and industry bodies to institutionalise its approach.

This demonstrates a highly scalable model for policymakers. NGOs and philanthropic organisations can serve as incubators for new economic solutions that GoI can then integrate into national programmes. If properly scaled such interventions can help address broader economic challenges whether it’s the rural-urban migration crisis, stagnation in traditional industries or the need for India to build globally competitive rural enterprises. Rather than waiting for large-scale policy shifts, solutions can be piloted at the grassroots, refined through partnerships, and then adopted into national planning.

This is how India can ensure that no region, regardless of its geography or economic history, is left behind. The road ahead While the Darjeeling Welfare Society has demonstrated a replicable model, the next phase involves scaling these initiatives through government adoption. The Darjeeling Welfare Society is actively working with state agencies to hand over program operations to West Bengal State Rural Livelihoods Mission (WBSRLM) for long-term skill development and enterprise financing, Department of Agriculture & Horticulture for sustainable agribusiness expansion and the Tea Board of India for integrating high-value specialty tea blends into the market. For India’s rural economy to truly thrive, development must be seen not as charity but as enterprise-building.

The government of India’s role is critical. But so is the role of NGOs, private enterprises and local leadership in designing interventions that work on the ground. The Supplemental Income initiative is one such success story but it is just the beginning. Across India, similar models must be encouraged, funded, and scaled.

The answer to inclusive development lies in enabling local solutions to grow into national strategies. This begins with recognizing that some of the best ideas for India’s future are already being tested not in conference rooms, but in the fields, workshops, and homes of rural communities across the country.

Harsh Vardhan Shringla is former Foreign Secretary of India and the founder President of the Darjeeling Welfare Society.

Pakistan: Passengers Left High And Dry In Middle Of Nowhere After Bolan Mail Refused Entry Into Balochistan

A passenger train from Pakistan’s economic hub Karachi to Balochistan’s provincial capital Quetta was stopped at Jacobabad and refused entry into Balochistan province after threats of a targetted attack and hijacking prompted security concerns.

The Bolan Mail train carrying about 150 passengers was stopped in Sindh province’s Jacobabad city, where passengers were offloaded and the train refused entry into Balochistan during early hours of Monday.

As per details, the passenger train departed from Karachi and reached Jacobabad post midnight. The train was stopped at the railway station where Pakistan Railway authorities were informed that further movement would not be allowed until security clearance was given. The train was carrying many government officials, security personnel along with their families.

Security sources stated that the intelligence agencies issued a threat alert of a planned hijacking attempt and attack on the train, similar to the Jaffar Express train hijacking that took place on March 11.

This resulted in refusal to allow the train to enter into Balochistan and offloading of passengers in Jacobabad. Majority of the passengers were moved to Sibbi, from where they used local transport services to return to Karachi. Pakistan Railway authorities charged passengers the fare from Karachi to Jacobabad and refunded the extra amount that was charged for the journey till Quetta.

The sudden decision to offload passengers at Jacobabad left many passengers stranded at the railway station with no water or electricity. Reportedly, some children also fainted due to the scorching heat and non-availability of water at the station.

“The hours-long stoppage of the Quetta-bound Bolan Mail was due to security reasons as train operations were not allowed in Balochistan during night-time. The train was carrying about 150 passengers,” said Pakistan Railway Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Amir Ali Baloch. “The train’s onward journey was suspended, and passengers were sent to Quetta and other destinations via buses under strict security measures,” he added.

Train routes to Balochistan have been suspended since March 11 when militants of the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) attacked and hijacked Jaffar Express passenger train at the Bolan pass in Balochistan, taking about 400 passengers as hostages. This resulted in a 48-hour standoff between the militants and the security forces. As many as 346 passengers were rescued, 21 lost their lives and 33 BLA militants were killed during the counteroffensive operation.

How Dr Ambedkar Was Humiliated And Marginalised In Nehru Govt: BJP Brings Out Truth Via Dramatized Videos

While the nation celebrates the 135th birth anniversary of Baba Saheb Ambedkar, the key architect of India’s Constitution, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) renewed attack on the Congress party and its previous regimes, accusing it of not just demeaning his contributions to the country but also conspiring to erase his legacy.

The BJP released two dramatized videos on Monday, which reenacts the political developments of that era and shows how Dr Ambedkar suffered a series of ‘ignominy and humiliation’, under the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. It claims that Baba Saheb was forced to resign from Nehru cabinet because he questioned the then dispensation and raised his voice against the plight of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes.

While tendering his resignation in Parliament, Dr Ambedkar also launched a blistering attack at the then Nehru government. “Are only Muslims entitled to special privileges. Why shouldn’t the Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes be given the same level of security. I can’t be part of such government,” he said in the House, while stepping down from the Union cabinet, claims the video.

The then Prime Minister, himself hitting the electoral fray to campaign against Dr Ambedkar was the another defining moment of how the Bharat Ratna was ‘dishonoured and derided’ by the Congress party. The theatrical adaptations of that era, shared in the video, claims that a former aide of Bala Saheb was propped, apparently at the instance of Jawaharlal Nehru, to challenge and defeat him in the elections.

When the first Lok Sabha elections were held in 1951–52, Dr B R Ambedkar contested from Mumbai North Central constituency as a candidate of the Scheduled Castes Federation. He was defeated by Narayan Sadoba Kajrolkar, a Congress candidate who had served as Ambedkar’s personal assistant. Kajrolkar won by a margin of approximately 15,000 votes. It was the then PM Nehru who campaigned against Dr Ambedkar in the election, making it a matter of prestige to ensure his defeat. Following this electoral loss, Babasaheb contested the Bhandara by-election in Maharashtra in 1954.

He was again defeated — this time by Congress candidate Bhaurao Borkar, with a margin of about 8,500 votes. The BJP claims that Nehru government and Congress party took deliberate steps to undermine Dr Ambedkar’s contributions and also ensure his electoral defeats and political marginalisation. “The countrymen will never forget the affront and insult meted out to the architect of Constitution,” it said.

Audio Of DMK Minister Sekar Babu And Party Supporter Threatening Each Other Go Viral; Party Supporter Arrested

A DMK supporter has been arrested for allegedly threatening P.K. Sekar Babu, the DMK minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE). The controversy erupted after an audio recording, purportedly of a DMK supporter making threatening remarks, went viral on social media.

In the audio, the speaker—identified as Kolathur Dhanaraj—allegedly threatens to expose DMK Minister Sekar Babu’s reported involvement in a disturbing incident where a group of goons, posing as sanitation workers, vandalized the home of YouTuber ‘Savukku’ Shankar. The attackers allegedly dumped human waste throughout the house, smeared filth across the rooms and dining area, and intimidated Shankar’s mother. The incident is believed to have occurred after Shankar publicly revealed an alleged scam involving Tamil Nadu Congress Committee President Selvaperunthagai. The threats have caused a major stir in political circles.

Sekar Babu, a powerful figure in North Chennai and considered one of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s close aides, appears to be the target of internal friction. Dhanaraj is known to be a close associate of former DMK Youth Wing executive Mahesh Kumar, who is the husband of Saritha, the DMK’s Zone 6 Chairman and 6th Ward Councillor of the Chennai Corporation. Mahesh Kumar reportedly runs a used car business in the Kolathur area and has been accused of involvement in kattapanchayat (extrajudicial settlements) and intimidation tactics.

In the leaked call, Dhanaraj insists on speaking directly with Sekar Babu, to which the minister responds that he should come in person. When the minister refuses to continue the conversation over the phone, Dhanaraj becomes aggressive, threatening to release details related to “Savukku Shankar” to the media. Despite the minister urging him to end the call, Dhanaraj maintains a hostile tone.

In the alleged audio recording, Dhanaraj is heard calling DMK HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu and introducing himself by saying, “Brother, this is Dhanaraj from Kolathur.” The minister responds, “Who is this?” to which Dhanaraj repeats, “It’s Dhanaraj from Kolathur.” The minister then asks, “What is it?” Dhanaraj replies, “I’m also in your party, the DMK.

The minister immediately responds, “Alright, come in person.” Surprised, Dhanaraj asks, “You want me to come in person?” The minister replies, “Yes, then what else?” Dhanaraj then says, “I’m with Mahesh.” The minister responds, “Okay, so what? You could be with anyone. Just because you call, should I talk to you?” Dhanaraj questions, “Why shouldn’t I speak over the phone?” The minister repeats, “Come in person.” Dhanaraj insists again, “Why shouldn’t I speak on a phone call?” The minister warns, “I’ll use this number to file a complaint against you.”

Unfazed, Dhanaraj replies, “Go ahead, brother. File the complaint.” He then adds, “You do (complain), and I’ll reveal everything to the media. Just wait and watch.” The minister calmly responds, “Go ahead and do it.” Dhanaraj threatens the Minister saying, “I’ll even expose the Savukku Shankar matter too, watch me.” The minister said, “Go ahead, I’m filing (complaint) right now.” In response, Dhanaraj challenged him, saying, “Go ahead. Watch me—I’ll say that I was the person behind the Savukku Shankar issue.” Angered, the DMK minister snapped, “Hang up the phone respectfully.” The conversation quickly escalated, with both sides exchanging heated words.

Following the release of the audio, police reportedly acted on a formal complaint from the minister. Dhanaraj was apprehended, and his phone was seized for investigation.

Radio Silence From ‘Feminist Champion’ The News Minute On DMK Min Ponmudi’s Sexual Innuendos Against Hindus And Women

A recent video of DMK Minister K. Ponmudy has ignited widespread controversy and condemnation across social media platforms, with many calling out the minister for his offensive remarks targeting Shaivite and Vaishnavite communities. The video, which surfaced on X, captures Ponmudy making a crude analogy involving a prostitute to mock the religious practices of these Hindu sects, drawing sharp criticism for its insensitivity and vulgarity.

In the video, Ponmudy recounts a supposed interaction between a man and a prostitute, where the woman asks the man if he is a Shaivite or a Vaishnavite. According to Ponmudy, the prostitute explains that Shaivite means “lying down position” (referencing the horizontal tilak worn by Shaivites) while a Vaishnavite means a “standing position” (referencing the vertical tilak worn by Vaishnavites).

The minister’s remarks were met with laughter from some in the audience, but they have since triggered a firestorm of backlash online.

Also, this isn’t the first time that DMK Minister Ponmudi has made such crass remarks from a public platform.

While inaugurating a ration shop at Manappoondi in Vizhupuram district, the DMK Minister openly asked a panchayat union chairperson about the caste she belonged.

“Even your panchayat union chairperson is a woman from an oppressed community. See who’s the chairman of this village? You are from a downtrodden community right? You are an SC right?” he asked on stage.

In yet another instance of DMK ministers abusing common people, DMK Minister Ponmudi yelled at a woman to ‘shut up’ when she came to him to express her grievances.

While speaking at a function, the DMK Minister made remarks in a belittling way while reminding women members in the audience about the ‘free bus scheme for women’ introduced by Stalin government.

“For you only 4000 rupees per card. Did he (Stalin) give or not? You got it right? Open your mouth and say. You got 4000 right? How are you going in bus today? If you want to go from here to Koyambedu or anywhere, you are going in ‘OC’ (free). You are going in ‘OC’ bus.”, he said.

Radio Silence From Feminist Champion The News Minute

The sacred symbols of the Hindu sects had been reduced to a sexual joke, and a woman—fictional or otherwise—was objectified in the process. In such moments, one expects India’s progressive media to respond swiftly and unequivocally. After all, ‘publications’ like The News Minute have built entire reputations championing against misogyny in public discourse.

Had this same language been used by a BJP politician, RSS member, or even a random sadhu, The News Minute’s newsroom would’ve sprung into action faster than you could say “patriarchy.”

  • “Misogynistic mindsets in saffron.”
  • “Hindutva’s dangerous view of women.”
  • “Why BJP’s toxic masculinity threatens Indian democracy.”

We’ve seen similar headlines before. Often within hours of a clip going viral.

But when the misogyny and mockery flow from a Dravidian politician, whose party thrives on anti-Hindu rhetoric and cloaks itself in “social justice”? Suddenly, the outrage pipeline dries up.

As of 14 April 2025, The News Minute has published no original reporting, no editorial, and no opinion piece on this incident. Nothing condemning Ponmudy. Nothing defending the dignity of Hindu women, saints, or symbols. Just radio silence. Their only mention? A syndicated feed noting that the AIADMK Women’s Wing plans to protest the remark.

This Isn’t Just About Hinduphobia. It’s About Hypocrisy

It isn’t the first time progressive platforms have displayed such double standards, but the hypocrisy has rarely been this blatant. Misogyny, when cloaked in anti-Hindu sentiment or delivered by a minister from the Dravidian fold, seems to slip past their radar. The same media house that throws the book at a pro-Hindu speaker for calling out gender dynamics within religious spaces suddenly discovers the virtues of nuance and silence. The minister, a person of power, has sexualized the religious symbols of the majority population of the state and country and no one in the DMK leadership has apologized – the only action taken is stripping Ponmudy of his party post – very strong action!!

This controversy isn’t merely about anti-Hindu rhetoric. It reveals an uncomfortable truth about ideological tribalism in Indian media. For many in the so-called liberal press, the legitimacy of outrage depends less on what was said, and more on who said it. If the perpetrator is aligned with their political sympathies, the story dies a quiet death. But if it comes from a saffron-tinged corner of the spectrum, the reaction is swift, scathing, and sustained.

Misogyny/Hate Isn’t Partisan, TNM, Your Outrage Shouldn’t Be Either

In the case of Ponmudy, the silence from the likes of The News Minute speaks volumes. There has been no call for an apology. No feminist think piece. No panel discussion on the commodification of women in political speeches. For a media platform that claims to stand for women’s dignity and secular fairness, the refusal to cover this story is not just disappointing—it’s damning.

If The News Minute truly believes in the values it claims to uphold, it must show the courage to apply them consistently. Misogyny is misogyny, whether it comes wrapped in a saffron shawl or draped in Dravidian rhetoric. And if it lacks the spine to say so, then it must stop pretending it ever had one.
