NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance, Orders Probe Into Forced Participation Of School Children In Khammam Pro-Palestine Rally

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued urgent notices to the top administration and police officials of Khammam district in Telangana, directing a swift investigation into allegations that school children were coerced into participating in a politically and religiously charged protest.

The action comes in response to a formal complaint filed by the Legal Rights Protection Forum, which alleged grave violations of children’s rights during a pro-Palestine rally held in Khammam on 7 August 2025.

Presided over by Hon’ble Member Shri Priyank Kanoongo, the Commission took cognizance under Section 12 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. The NHRC has called for a detailed Action Taken Report within 15 days from the Khammam District Collector, the Superintendent of Police, and the Commissioner of School Education, Telangana.

The complaint alleged that nearly 25 schools, both large and small, forced minor students to attend the rally, transporting them in approximately 100 buses. At the event, children were reportedly made to enact violent depictions of the Gaza conflict, using props such as dolls wrapped to resemble corpses, stained with red colour to simulate blood. The complaint stated that such graphic dramatizations caused significant fear and emotional distress among the children.

Citing multiple legal violations, the petitioner highlighted breaches of:

  • Article 39(f) of the Indian Constitution, which mandates protection of children from exploitation,
  • Section 17 of the Right to Education Act, prohibiting mental harassment of students,
  • Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, which penalizes cruelty causing mental or physical suffering to a child.

The rally was reportedly organized by a coalition including communist parties (CPI, CPM, CPI(ML)), Muslim organizations such as Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, and local leaders from the Congress and BRS parties.

The NHRC directive emphasizes the need to identify all responsible school managements and organizers, ensure counselling for affected children, and initiate legal action under relevant provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

The Commission has instructed authorities to submit their report via the official HRCNet portal and refrain from email communications to maintain procedural integrity.

Air India Served 4 DGCA Show-Cause Notices For 29 Violations, Says Govt

Mumbai-New York Air India Flight Diverted To Delhi After Bomb Threat show-cause notice violation kathmandu stranded

The government on Thursday said that the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) had issued four show-cause notices to Air India over 29 violations. These violations are addressed as per the Enforcement Policy and Procedure Manual of DGCA.

A few instances of systematic issues were observed post-merger of Vistara and Air India, said Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.

“Systemic issues were due to the adoption of new software and systems. A compliance reply has been received from Air India,” the minister informed. The DGCA carried out 171 regulatory audits from 2020 to June 2025 to ensure safety in India’s civil aviation sector.

In an earlier reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha, MoS Mohol informed that a total of two incidents of turbulence and 10 incidents of emergency landing due to technical snags have been reported since January 2024 apart from which Air India’s Boeing aircraft VT-ANB on June 12, 2025, “declared MAYDAY and eventually met with an accident”.

The minister said that pilot training in India is governed by extant regulations as specified under various Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) and operations circulars, which are in line with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and global best practices.

The DGCA also ordered a new set of Comprehensive Special Audits to enhance safety following the jolt to the country’s civil aviation sector in the wake of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad.

The audit framework covers the entire range of aviation entities, including scheduled and non-scheduled airlines, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) organisations, flying training schools, air navigation service providers, airport operators, and ground handling agencies.

The aviation regulator has made it clear that failure to comply with audit recommendations could attract penalties such as suspension of operations or even cancellation of licences in cases of violation of safety norms.

AICC Orders Probe into Complaints Against Palakkad Congress MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil

Kerala Congress Orders Probe into Complaints Against Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkoottathil

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) has directed the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) to conduct an internal probe into complaints raised against first-time legislator and Youth Congress president, Rahul Mamkoottathil.

Indications have come that he might be removed from the post of president. AICC general secretary in charge of Kerala, Deepadas Munshi, has instructed the state leadership to examine the matter and report back. The development comes amid mounting political pressure and public debate over the allegations.

On Wednesday night, angry BJP workers staged a protest march to Mamkoottathil’s office in Palakkad, the constituency he represents. Senior BJP leader C. Krishnakumar, who had finished second to Mamkoottathil in last year’s by-election, alleged that at least two complaints have now surfaced against the MLA.

“On Thursday, a female writer came out alleging inappropriate behaviour by him,” Krishnakumar claimed. The CPI(M) has also stepped in, with Palakkad district secretary Suresh Babu urging the Congress leadership to take “appropriate action” against the legislator.

The controversy first erupted when actress Rini Ann George alleged that a young leader of a prominent political party had misbehaved with her a few years ago. However, she refrained from naming the leader.

On Thursday, she reiterated her claim but declined to disclose the name, saying she was “not ready at the moment”. The issue has also sparked unrest within the faction-ridden Youth Congress. Calls emerged on Thursday in the organisation’s social media groups demanding clarity from the leadership.

Defending Mamkoottathil, Youth Congress leader V.P. Dulkiphil told reporters, “At the moment, there is only an allegation without any name mentioned. Anyone can level allegations. We all know how wild charges once targeted our topmost leader. After his passing, he was glorified, but his family had suffered greatly due to baseless attacks.”

Meanwhile, DYFI leader V.K. Sanoj said the Leader of Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, could no longer remain silent. “This woman is already facing cyberattacks. She was a former journalist, and everyone knows who she is pointing to,” Sanoj said. With the issue gaining political traction, the ball is now in the court of the state Congress unit.

Tamil Nadu Govt Floats Tender To Carry Out Survey To Map Migrant Labourers Across All Districts Of State

The Tamil Nadu government has floated a tender to carry out a comprehensive statewide survey of inter-state migrant (ISM) workers in a bid to build a reliable and updated database of this workforce.

The initiative will supplement the ongoing enrolment drive undertaken by the state labour department through its online registration portal. So far, officials have managed to compile a sector-wise database of 12.51 lakh workers, a process that took nearly five years due to difficulties in reaching ISMs across all 38 districts.

To accelerate the process, the department has decided to engage private agencies and institutions to complete the exercise within a shorter timeframe. A senior bureaucrat said the absence of accurate and complete data had hampered the government’s ability to effectively deliver welfare measures to ISMs.

“Migrant workers themselves were also unaware of several social security schemes available to them. The survey will bridge the gap between the existing portal enrolments and the actual numbers, which will help us design better policies and monitor the mobility of this workforce,” the official explained. According to data available with the labour department, 12,17,229 workers have been registered so far.

Migrants from Odisha form the largest group at 2.89 lakh, followed by Bihar with 2.51 lakh. Workers from Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and West Bengal also make up significant portions of the workforce. Sectors such as manufacturing, construction, and textiles account for the highest employment of ISMs.

In Tiruppur district alone, more than 1.22 lakh migrant workers are engaged in garment and textile manufacturing. In Kancheepuram, Coimbatore, and Chennai districts together, officials have recorded over 2.22 lakh workers across industrial units and construction sites.

While the existing data provides insights into migration patterns and labour-intensive sectors, officials stressed the need to cover at least 80 per cent of the ISM population to make the database truly representative. The upcoming survey is expected to be a key step in ensuring welfare delivery and creating a sustainable framework for integrating ISMs into Tamil Nadu’s growth story.

Madras High Court Recalls Interim Relief To EPS In AIADMK Leadership Case

eps aiadmk

In a setback to AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS), the Madras High Court on Thursday recalled the interim relief it had granted him two days earlier in a case questioning his authority to head the party.

The order was withdrawn after it emerged that a caveat filed by the plaintiff had not been considered when the stay was issued. Justice P.B. Balaji said the interim order, issued on Tuesday (August 19), was being recalled since a caveat filed by the plaintiff, S. Suriyamoorthy, had not been brought to his attention at the time of passing the order.

Under the caveat, the plaintiff had sought that no order be passed without giving him an opportunity to be heard. The oversight came to light when Palaniswami’s counsel himself pointed it out during Thursday’s proceedings. The court then recorded the submission of the plaintiff’s counsel, M. Velmurugan, who expressed readiness to argue the matter on Monday (August 25).

Justice Balaji therefore posted the case for hearing next week, when he will decide on whether to grant an interim stay of the civil court proceedings after hearing both sides. The legal battle stems from a suit filed in 2022 by Suriyamoorthy before the IV Assistant City Civil Court in Chennai.

He alleged that Palaniswami was functioning as AIADMK general secretary in violation of the party’s bylaws. In response, Palaniswami argued that the case should be dismissed outright since the plaintiff was no longer a member of the party. However, on July 31 this year, civil court judge K. Sivasakthivel Kannan dismissed Palaniswami’s plea to reject the suit at the threshold.

The judge ruled that the question of whether Suriyamoorthy had the right to challenge the leadership could not be decided summarily and that the suit merited examination on its merits. Challenging this order, Palaniswami moved the High Court with a revision petition, seeking to quash the civil court’s refusal and to stay further proceedings.

With Thursday’s recall of the interim order, the stage is now set for a fresh round of arguments next week that could have a decisive bearing on the leadership tussle within the AIADMK.

Why Celebrating Madras Day On 22 August Is A Crude Joke On Our Patriots

madras day

It is that time of the year, when Chennaites are mob frenzied into celebrating Madras week, as a part of Madras Day celebration. For the unawares, Madras Day is celebrated on 22nd August.

Why 22 August?

Because a group of people decided that 22 August is the founding day of Madras. What made them choose this date? It was on 22nd August 1639, East India Company a.k.a. invaders, purchased a piece of barren land from Nayakas. Later the East India Company built St. George Fort over the land they built.

Madras Day has no historic connection. It is just a recent phenomenon that started about 20 years ago. What started as a simple heritage walk around the Fort in 2004, has now turned into a full-fledged marketing brainwashing exercise.

Certain people claim 22.08.1639 is the birthday of Madras, which is Chennai. Does this mean, there was No Madras, No civilization, No People before that? Our Parthasarathy Temple, Kalikambal Temple, Kapaleeswarar Temple and predates by many centuries. Over 2 dozen temples are there in Chennai for over 1000 years. Thiruvalluvar was born in this very Madras.

Conveniently or purposefully ignoring our history, new narrative is being set as if our city is less than 400 years old. And what day do these folks have chosen?

This day, invaders British set foot on our soil. This day is actually a black day for the city. Celebrating it is an insult to lakhs of Freedom fighters who fought for our Independence. It is exactly 7 days after our Independence Day, and it is nothing but a crude joke.

Even the US, which has been celebrating Columbus Day for Centuries, now started to mark the day as Indigenous people’s day to honour Native American history and acknowledge the negative impacts of Columbus’s arrival. Like how arrival of Columbus at Caribbeans, led to exploitation and enslavement of natives, this land deal by the British, led to exploitation of natives in Channapatnam and entire Tamil Nadu. Though the Europens arrived much earlier to Bharat and already started to colonize, this land deal was the start point for colonising Madras and Tamil Nadu. And we are celebrating this day! A typical slave mindset.

People with right thinking will never celebrate their invaders and oppressors. Ofcourse Bharat is a free country, one can even celebrate Robert Clive’s Birth Anniversary, who can stop? But this freedom was not given in a silver plate. Lakhs of people have shed their blood for this. Our loyalty should be only to these patriots and Bharat Mata and not to oppressors.

India’s GDP Expected To Grow 6.8-7% In Q1 FY26, Says SBI Research

India's GDP Grows 5.4% In Q2 Of FY 2024-25; Remains Fastest Growing Major Economy In The World

India’s GDP is expected to grow between 6.8 per cent-7 per cent in the first quarter this fiscal (Q1 FY26), due to higher discretionary spending which will drive demand-led growth in the country, a report said on Thursday.

The gross value added (GVA) growth is estimated at 6.5 per cent for the quarter, SBI Research said, adding that the gap between real and nominal growth will significantly narrow in Q1 FY26. The peak elasticity of government capital expenditure to GDP has reached 1.17, making it imperative for private investment to support public capital expenditure for sustainable growth, according to the State Bank of India’s research arm.

“A major source of concern for sustainable growth is the muted private capex. We believe that numbers may further decline as US tariffs may significantly impact the capex. Private investment must complement public investment to take the economy onto an even higher sustainable growth path,” the report noted.

The global economy has continued to hold steady, but the composition of activity points to distortions from tariffs rather than underlying robustness, the report added. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised upwards the global growth projections to 3 per cent for 2025 and 3.1 per cent in 2026 reflecting primarily front-loading ahead of tariff materialisation.

Further, it revised upwards India’s growth estimation by 20 bps to 6.4 per cent and China’s by 80 bps to 4.8 per cent. During the quarter, Indian Inc., which has approximately 4,300 listed entities, reported 4.7 per cent growth and 6.7 per cent EBIDTA growth, compared to 11 per cent EBIDTA growth the previous quarter.

SBI Research found that due to the fresh resumption of tariffs on Indian exports, the earnings outlook is likely to be negative for the next two quarters. However, GST 2.0 can give a fillip to the consumption-orientated sector and offset the impact, it noted.

Severe Economic Crisis In Pakistan: 44.7% Below Poverty Line, Per Capita Income Drops 11%

pakistan economic crisis below poverty line

Pakistan stands at a critical juncture. The convergence of poverty, unemployment, demographic pressure and inequality reflects a deeply rooted crisis with far-reaching consequences for a country in which 44.7 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, according to an article in the Pakistan Observer newspaper.

Pakistan’s per capita income has stagnated and even declined in recent years, reflecting deepening economic challenges. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, during the fiscal year 2022-2023, the country recorded an 11.38 per cent drop in per capita income, falling from $1,766 in 2022 to $1,568 in 2023.

This decline coincided with a sharp contraction in the overall economy, which shrank by $33.4 billion, from $375 billion to $341.6 billion. The stagnation is largely attributed to persistent structural issues, including political instability, inflation, currency depreciation and weak industrial output, the article in the widely read English daily further states. Compared to regional peers, Pakistan’s GDP per capita remains significantly lower — estimated at $6,950 in 2025.

The economic disparity between urban and rural regions further entrenches inequality, the article points out. According to the World Bank’s 2025 findings, nearly 44.7 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, based on the revised threshold of $4.20 per person per day for lower-middle-income countries, a staggering figure that underscores the scale of deprivation.

Even more alarming is that 16.5 per cent of the population, around 39.8 million people, live in extreme poverty, earning less than $3 per day, a sharp rise from previous estimates of 4.9 per cent. The article, written by Assadullah Channa, points out that urban centres like Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad benefit from better infrastructure, diversified economies and greater access to services.

In contrast, rural areas remain underdeveloped, with limited access to clean water, electricity, healthcare and education. Agriculture, the primary livelihood in these regions, suffers from low productivity and outdated practices. Provincial disparities also persist.

Punjab and Sindh attract more investment and development, while Balochistan and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lag behind due to historical neglect, weak governance. This uneven distribution of resources fuels social discontent and marginalisation.

Inflation, particularly in essential commodities, has become a chronic challenge in Pakistan, driven by currency depreciation, global market volatility and domestic inefficiencies. In July 2025, annual inflation rose to 4.1 per cent, up from 3.2 per cent in June, marking the highest level since December 2024.

The impact is most severe on food and energy prices. The erosion of purchasing power among lower-income groups has led to widespread hardship, with many households forced to cut back on meals, education and healthcare. Public investment in education and health is critically low, with education spending reduced by 44 per cent in the latest budget and health expenditure hovering around 1 per cent of GDP.

Four-Year-Old Dies Of Rabies In Bengaluru After Stray Dog Bite

rabies dog bite

A four-year-old girl, Khadeera Banu, died of rabies on Tuesday at Bengaluru’s Rajiv Gandhi Hospital, nearly four months after being bitten by a stray dog in her home in Davangere, Karnataka. The dog had attacked her face and other parts of her body in April 2025, leaving her critically injured. She was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Bengaluru for advanced care, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to the disease.

The tragedy has highlighted concerns over the management of stray dogs in Karnataka. Earlier this month, Karnataka Lokayukta Justice BS Patil criticised the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for failing to control the rising number of stray dog attacks. An independent probe led by Dr. Vamshikrishna, Superintendent of Police, Urban Division, found that BBMP had not set up observation homes for aggressive dogs.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has ordered that all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions be shifted to shelters equipped with professionals for sterilisation and immunisation, warning that any obstruction will face “strictest action.” The order sparked protests from animal rights activists. A separate bench later questioned why authorities began removing dogs before the order was made public; the matter is now reserved for judgment.

PM Modi Endorses CP Radhakrishnan For Vice President, Recalls Long Bond

cp radhakrishnan cpr pm modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly endorsed CP Radhakrishnan as a suitable candidate for the post of Vice President of India. Speaking warmly about his longtime acquaintance, PM Modi highlighted Radhakrishnan’s humble beginnings, noting that he hails from an ordinary family and a backward community in Tamil Nadu.

Recalling their early years, the Prime Minister said that both he and Radhakrishnan have grown together over decades, joking about how their hair was black at the time. He emphasized that Radhakrishnan has risen to hold the highest position in the Lok Sabha and is now poised to assume the highest office in the Rajya Sabha.

PM Modi also praised Radhakrishnan’s achievements beyond politics, mentioning that he had been a sportsperson. However, he clarified that Radhakrishnan’s political journey is built on merit and dedication rather than his sporting background, underscoring his suitability for the nation’s second-highest constitutional post.

He said, “Friends, today I am introducing a very old friend of mine. So, I am also happy. It has been so many years, at that time all my hair was black. Radha Krishna ji also had black hair. The Sengol is sitting at the highest position in the Lok Sabha, and it is from Tamil Nadu. Now a son of Tamil Nadu is going to sit on the highest position in the Rajya Sabha. Shriman Radhakrishnan ji is a person from an ordinary family. He has come from a backward society and today he is moving towards a high position in the nation. He has also been a sportsperson. He has not come here because of being a sportsperson. He never played any game in politics.”

Radhakrishnan filed his nomination on 20 August 2025 for the post of Vice President. The Opposition alliance have fielded former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy.
