DRDO drug 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) set to be used for treatment of Wuhan virus patients

As India is fighting the insurmountable odds against the second wave of Wuhan virus pandemic, the first batch of 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drug is set to be launched next week, reports Livemint.

The drug has been developed by the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) lab, Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences, in collaboration with Hyderabad based pharmaceutical major Dr Reddy’s Laboratories. The drug can be used to treat moderate and severe cases of Wuhan virus.

The DRDO is known for developing state of the art weapons platforms for the Indian military, however, this time the scientists of DRDO have developed the 2-DG drug and it has been cleared by the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use in the treatment of Covid-19 patients earlier last week.

The first batch will comprise 10,000 doses of 2-DG and will be administered to patients as an adjunct therapy or an alternative treatment to assist the primary treatment.

DRDO in a statement had earlier said that during the clinical trial, the drug helped in faster recovery of hospitalized patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence.

During the 2-DG trials, the drug showed faster symptomatic cure than Standard of Care (SoC) for patients on various endpoints in the efficacy trends.

Restaurant owner in Dindigul leaves food packets outside the entrance for the hungry

The owner of a restaurant in Dindigul has won hearts by leaving food parcels in front of his shop every day and a sign that reads that ‘the poor and the hungry can take it for free.’

Mujibur Rahman and his brother Bilal Hussain run a hotel called Mujib Biryani near the Dindigul bus stand. During last year’s coronavirus lockdown, they helped the starving roadside residents, with the help of volunteers, and provided free food. During the previous lockdown, a total of more than 25,000 food parcels were prepared and distributed by the hotel.

This year, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a curfew with restrictions due to the second wave of coronavirus. As a result, many roadside shopkeepers, including the poor, have been left without access to income. The Mujib Biryani Hotel is currently operating only takeaway since there is only parcel service allowed in restaurants. In this situation, the idea of providing free food to the victims of the curfew came to the Mujib brothers again.

They then set up a table in front of the hotel and put food parcels on it, saying ‘the poor and the hungry can take it for free.’ Those with no means of income, many are aware of his service and take the food packages placed in front of the hotel to eat.

The brothers who run the hotel, Mujibur Rahman and Bilal Hussain, said: “We helped the hungry during the lockdown last year. Many cooperated. Knowing that many people are currently suffering from unemployment and hunger, our hotel has already started a program to satisfy the hungry with our food. People know this and take the food packets they need and go hungry. We put out 150 food parcels a day, evening and night.”

They went on to say that they carry these food packages for free at no cost. The sight of them gratefully picking up food parcels makes them want to help more, they said.

Dr Devi Shetty: Indian govt moved heaven and earth to get the oxygen, no country has the infrastructure to manage this pandemic

Dr Devi Shetty who is one of India’s most respected cardiac surgeons and the founder of multispeciality hospital chain Narayana Health has said that India must buy at least 300-400 million doses of vaccines through one channel and use private hospitals to accelerate the pace of inoculation.

“If we go to companies and say we want to buy 300-400 million doses, this is the money take it, they will give it to you, and these are vaccines that don’t need a trial, they have been used on millions of people,” Dr Shetty told Money Control in an interview.

“One day of lockdown, how much is it going to cost us? The vaccine is the cheapest solution we have against COVID, we have to use it.”

Dr Shetty has even arranged for the final-year student nurses and medical students who are about to finish their courses to join the fight against COVID. This decision will augment the already stretched and stressed out medical personnel.

When asked about the centralised vs decentralised approach, Dr Shetty said, “I know a lot of people are criticising the government, but I can tell you, the number of COVID patients we have, (even) if we present this to the US government, there is no way they can manage it … forget any other country. These are astronomical numbers that no country in the world has the infrastructure to manage.”

He said the central government has done a phenomenal job and “moved heaven and earth to get the oxygen to the hospitals”. “Of course, a lot of people have suffered, but if the whole country is falling sick there is no healthcare infra in the world that can cope.”

Dr Shetty called for a bulk order to quicken the pace of vaccination and said, “Bulk order will give you huge leverage to negotiate the best price and unless these companies get money in advance they won’t commit. We need at least five different vaccine manufacturers to come forward and say that you give me the money, we will deliver at this time.”

Dr Shetty stressed that it is crucial to vaccinate parents of young children, as the virus could mutate and look for a new, susceptible pool of the population as claimed by some virologists.

“I feel we all should come together and have one vaccine procuring agency. We know the strength of the economy of scale. A country saying we need 300-600 million and saying we will give you money upfront, it is a different ball game,” he said.

Dr Shetty underscored the role private hospitals will play in the vaccination drive. In terms of prioritization and administration of vaccination, he said while government institutions have limitations, private hospitals have more flexibility to conduct massive drives.

Hindu Munnani condemns usage of temple funds for self-promotion of CM Stalin and Minister Sekar Babu, asks relief kits to be provided in the name of temples

Hindu Munnani’s Tamil Nadu state vice-president VP Jayakumar issued a statement saying that the Tamil Nadu Government should provide relief in the name of temples that granted this relief.

The press release stated that the announcement by the Government of Tamil Nadu to provide food to the relatives of patients receiving corona treatment at the government hospital is welcome but objected to the fact that it is being given from the revenue of Hindu temples on behalf of the HR&CE Department.”

It stated that ‘Annadanam’ is being provided to the poor for many years in temples already under the control of the Department of HR&CE. “It is absurd that the newly-elected DMK government is now using the funds of Hindu temples for their own self-promotion, despite the fact that the Hon’ble High Court has repeatedly pointed out in several judgments that Hindu temple revenue should not be used for anything other than temple development works”, it added.

At the event to distribute food parcels at the Tirunelveli Government Hospital on behalf of the Department of HR&CE, the packets and banner contained pictures of the MK Stalin and Sekar Babu, the Minister of HR&CE. “The banner did not appear to have contained a picture of Swami Nellaiyappar or any of the temple offerings along with the parcels.”, it said.

The press release went on to say that the looting of temple revenue and property for political advertisements is extremely painful. “The food package has been made to look like something Stalin and the minister are offering in their own regard. This is highly reprehensible.”, the press release said.

Hindu Munnani has requested the Government of Tamil Nadu to act on behalf of the respective temple administrations in considering the scheme of distributing food parcels in hospitals in the name of the temple with the images of the deity and offerings so that the people will have faith in God and mental courage in fighting the disease.

BJP spokesperson SG Suryah questions MK Stalin over his silence on Kerala Govt’s refusal to give oxygen to TN

There have been constant reports of COVID19 patients dying due to lack of oxygen. The newly-elected DMK chief MK Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting the central government to provide additional oxygen to Tamil Nadu. Following this, the Central Government on May 8 reallocated the oxygen supply for states and ordered that of the 170 MT oxygen produced at the Inox Kanjikode plant in Kerala, 40 MT of oxygen per day be supplied to Tamil Nadu by diverting the 20 MT oxygen to be given for Karnataka.

However, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan invoked the Kerala State Disaster Management Act and issued a new order refusing to supply 160 MT of oxygen to be sent for 4 days (May 9-12) stating that the state will not be able to send oxygen to Tamil Nadu as the demand in their state was increasing and that the rising number of patients needed oxygen. Pinarayi Vijayan also wrote in his letter to the Prime Minister that his government would not be able to send the ‘buffer’ oxygen.

Because of this, Tamil Nadu had lost 160 MT of oxygen that it should have received from Kerala in the last three days.

In light of this, Madurai Parliamentary Constituency MP Su. Venkatesan wrote a letter to Communist Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to send the excess oxygen in Kerala to Tamil Nadu.

While the Kerala government sent 31 metric tonnes of oxygen to Tamil Nadu following the central government’s order, Communist MP from Tamil Nadu Su. Venkatesan has been bragging that Tamil Nadu got oxygen because of the letter he wrote.

It is noteworthy that the Kerala government has stopped sending oxygen to Tamil Nadu from yesterday (May 13). The DMK, which won the election in alliance with the Communists in Tamil Nadu, is keeping quiet on the issue. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has not even utter a word about the Kerala government’s refusal to provide oxygen despite the Tamil Nadu government extending help whenever a catastrophe struck Kerala.

In light of this BJP Tamil Nadu Spokesperson SG Suryah has question MK Stalin’s silence over the issue. In a live television debate, Suryah said that Pinarayi Vijayan had refused the ‘buffer’ stock meant for Tamil Nadu but there has been no request from Stalin’s side to get the oxygen needed for the state. “When we (Tamil Nadu) had excess, we sent oxygen to Telangana which was facing deficit. But nobody the DMK which is in alliance with the Congress has remained silent over this matter”, said Suryah.

Pinarayi Vijayan edits Facebook post to appease Islamists and Communists after Hamas kills Indian nurse in Israel

pinarayi vijayan kerala government sabarimala cases

After it emerged that an Indian named Soumya Santosh, a native of Kerala who was in Israel as a caregiver to an elderly woman in the southern Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon was killed by rockets launched by the Sunni Islamist terror group Hamas, both the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and United Democratic Front (UDF) simply could not condemn the Palestinians for this terror attack.

Soumya Santosh, hailing from Idukki, Kerala was 31 years old nurse and was killed when Hamas fired rockets towards the civilian population.

However, According to the reports, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was forced to change his Facebook post after facing criticism from Islamists in Kerala. The CM actually had to edit his Facebook post to delete any references he made to link Soumya’s death Hamas.

If the Kerala Islamists were not happy, the Communists and the Congress were not far behind to appease Muslims in the state.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) said it was the Israeli who attacked Palestine and said, “the air raids carried out by Israel on the Gaza strip led to the death of many Palestinian citizens”.

“Israel is moving towards the complete occupation of East Jerusalem by attacking Palestinians who were protesting its attempt to forcefully expel residents of Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood to make way for Jewish settlements. Netanyahu, who had repeatedly failed to win a majority in the Israel elections, launched these attacks for petty political gains,” the statement issued by the CPI(M) said.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Janapaksham party and former Poonjar MLA P C George came down heavily on Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and called him “irattachankan”, (man with two hearts) for not condoling the death of the Malayali nurse who was killed in Israel.

In a strong-worded FB post on Wednesday, George wrote “You are a conniver. This is a big example for indulging in appeasement eyeing few votes. Who are you fearing of? Palestine or Hamas? Or the Hamas in Kerala? Maybe for the junior comrades you may be double-hearted. But both those hearts are in the control of others.”

George was relentless in his attack and did not spare the communist leaders of the state. He said, “Those people who howl based on the direction from the AKG centre are also fast asleep. Kerala is making progress on the strength of the money sent by our children who earn from working abroad. Please show gratitude for that at least.”
