Researchers in IIT-BHU develop eco-friendly adsorbent from rice husk for water treatment

IIT BHU researchers develop eco-friendly adsorbent

A research team from IIT-BHU has developed an eco-friendly and inexpensive adsorbent made entirely from rice husk which, they claim, can be used to remove heavy metal toxic ions from wastewater. The team, from the School of Biochemical Engineering from the University, claims that the adsorbent can be used to separate ions like hexavalent chromium from wastewater. They claim that this can be used to help and clean the Ganga river.

This work has been published in the “Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering”.

The team, headed by Dr Vishal Mishra, synthesised the adsorbent and showed it to be effective in the adsorption and reduction of hexavalent chromium from wastewater. Doctoral fellows Veer Singh and Jyoti Singh were also part of the team.

Dr Mishra said in an interview that hexavalent chromium is responsible for several types of health problems in the human body like various types of cancers, kidney and liver failure. This adsorbent is effective in the removal of toxic metal ions from wastewater as compared to other conventional methods and, that too, in less time.

“In developing countries, water-borne diseases are a major problem. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year, 3.4 million people, mostly children, die from water-related diseases. Improving water quality can reduce global water-borne diseases. Cancer due to heavy metals is also a severe problem worldwide,” he added.

Twitter issues statement prior meeting with MeitY, Govt ‘Koos’ response to Twitter

After Twitter failed to comply with the Ministry of Information and Technology’s request for action on accounts spreading inflammatory propaganda on the social media platform, the government seems to have adopted a stern stance.

Twitter on Wednesday said in a statement that it had withheld some of the accounts identified in the blocking orders under our Country Withheld Content policy within India but did not take any action on accounts of alleged media outlets, journalists, activists and politicians. Earlier, Twitter had temporarily blocked these accounts over comments made by them on the platform using the hashtag #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide. However, in just a few hours the accounts were reactivated citing “free speech” and because it found the content “newsworthy”.

After Twitter reactivated these accounts, MeitY sent a notice to the micro-blogging site under section 69A of the IT act following which Twitter released a statement stating the reason for not blocking certain accounts.

In response to this, MeitY, hinting that it would be not be taking things for granted posted its response to Twitter on Koo, the Indian version of Twitter.

Image

The government’s response  on Koo is seen as a subtle and loaded message to Twitter to pull up its sock and obey the law of land.

In the earlier notice issued by MeitY to Twitter, it said “Twitter is an intermediary and they are obliged to obey the directions of the government. Refusal to do so will invite penal action”

It added that the “motivated campaigns” on the platform and the controversial hashtag around Prime Minister Narendra Modi were being run to “abuse, inflame and create tension in society on unsubstantiated grounds”.

The government gave a very strong warning to Twitter that failure to comply with its order would invite action against the company under Section 69A [3] of the IT Act, under which senior officials of the micro-blogging site could face a jail term of up to seven years, and a financial penalty.

Only after this Twitter began to understand the gravity of the situation and assured the government that it is looking into all the concerns raised by the government and it will take stock of the content on the handles flagged by it.

As of now, Twitter has deactivated 126 of the 257 handles that had originally tweeted using the hashtag, sources were quoted in the report as saying. Also, it has deactivated 583 of the 1,178 handles that the government suspected to have links with Khalistani and Pakistani elements to spread misinformation and provocative content.

Alcohol, considered ‘haram’ in Islam gets ‘halal’ certificate in Kerala, Hindu Aikyavedi President K P Sasikala points out hypocrisy

Kerala halal certificate

Following the incident where a Hindu Aikyavedi worker was arrested for a post on Halal, the organization’s President K.P. Sasikala has lashed out calling out the hypocrisy in a Facebook post which is now going viral.

Sasikala in her post pointed out how alcohol products are getting a “halal certificate” and questioned how such a certificate can be given to a product that has ingredients considered ‘haram’ (forbidden) in Islam.

K P Sasikala said that a prominent company got halal certification for producing Ethyl Acetate which is composed of 90% alcohol and 10% distilled water. Incidentally, alcohol falls under the category of Haram i.e. forbidden for the Muslims.

India has been exporting this product to various nations, including the Middle-East, and as per available data, five years ago these products only needed a certificate from the food standards authorities. However, due to pressure exerted by authorities in the Middle East, halal certification had to be issued in order for the products to be exported.

Halal certification is based on Islamic religious principles, but more importantly, it is also based on a monetary principle where the halal certificate issuing authority ― the authority being Muslim organisations or private bodies ― charges ₹50,000 per certification. What is even more disturbing is that the amount has to be given in “cash and not via cheque”.

Sasikala only pointed out at the blatant hypocrisy in her Facebook post and said that with money, anything haram can be converted to halal.

The other significant aspect pointed out by her are the threats emanating from halal certification ― the certification is seen by many as an act of waging an economic jihad and maintaining a monopoly on industries, and ultimately, the economy.

Secret nuclear powered surveillance equipment left in Nanda Devi in 1965 may have caused flash flood

The catastrophic glacier burst which caused massive flash floods in the  Tapovan area of Chamoli has expressed concerns this cataclysmic event may have been produced by a radioactive device, reports Times of India.

Raini village bore the brunt of the destruction caused by the flash floods and locals are relating this to a top-secret mission which was carried out in 1965 conducted by the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Indian Intelligence Bureau (IB) to plant nuclear-powered surveillance equipment on the summit of the mountain, India’s second-highest (after Kanchenjunga) for spying on China.

This mission was carried out after the aftermath of the ignoble defeat India suffered at the hands of China in 1962. Fearing India might fall, American President John F Kennedy gave military aid to India and came to its rescue and this mission was to monitor the communication from China which as a country was closed to the rest of the world.

However, the number one reason was in 1963 China had conducted its first nuclear test and so this clandestine mission was carried out to install a nuclear-powered spying device on the summit of Nanda Devi peak. But due to bad weather, the expedition team left the nuclear-fuelled generator and plutonium capsules with the intention of renewing its attempt at a later date.

However, the mountaineering team carrying out this hazardous expedition got caught in a blizzard and had to return, leaving the device at the base of the mountain. When they returned a year later, they could not find the device and even after numerous expeditions the device could not be traced.

Since the power source for this device was nuclear, the life span for the radio surveillance is over 100 years and now many believe that the lost nuclear device could have caused the flood.

According to the people who live in the Raini village in Chamoli district, which is situated in the Nanda Devi Biosphere, they noticed an extremely pungent smell in the air as muck and rubble from the mountain came rolling down and fell into the Rishiganga river.

“The smell was so intense that we were not able to breathe for some time. Had it been only debris and snow, it would not have carried such a smell. This has triggered concerns in our village that the long-lost radioactive device – about which our elders used to tell us – may be behind the incident,” said Deveshwari Devi, a resident of Jugju village, from where several men had served as porters during the 1965 expedition.

Now the villagers are concerned about the possible radioactive pollution caused by this device.

“During the 1965 expedition, we are told that the mountaineering team faced bad weather while they were above the base camp and they had to leave the device at a safe place there. If the device is buried under the snow somewhere in the area and is radiating heat, then of course there would be more melting of snow and further avalanches. We urge the government to immediately start a search operation for the device before there are more disasters,” said Sangram Singh Rawat, a local.

The leader of the expedition, Capt Manmohan Singh Kohli, was quoted saying in TOI report, “After the Chinese carried out their first nuclear test in 1964, the US decided to spy on China’s nuclear capabilities via India. The CIA asked the Indian government if it could plant a sensor. The government, which at the time blindly followed the CIA, agreed. On June 23, 1965, we did a trial run on Mount McKinley in Alaska, and then went to Nanda Devi, but had to turn back because of bad weather conditions. Unable to carry it back, we left the device there. We went back in May 1966 to search for it, and again in 1967 but had no luck. In 1968, we finally abandoned the search. Because it was a top-secret mission, we were not allowed to disclose what we were doing even to our families. The American agents used aliases. The whole thing was quite exhausting, but we were in the service of the nation,”.

DMK leader RS Bharathi calls late leader Jayalalithaa a ‘moodhevi’ and TN CM a ‘dog’, takes jibe at Jaya not having heir and questions ‘potency’ of TN CM

Yet again, RS Bharathi, the Organizational Secretary of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), who had earlier spoken derogatorily of Dalits, has now made derogatory comments about Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, late AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa and Sasikala.

With the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections just around the corner, political parties in Tamil Nadu have gone into campaign mode. Speaking at an event held in Ambattur in Chennai, DMK leader R.S. Bharthi said that the current regime of Edappadi K. Palaniswami would end in two new moons.

“He has forgotten with whose help, this dog, this man sat on the CM’s chair. Those who kick the ladder that they used for climbing up has never met a good end. I would say even MGR is also like that. MGR was nurtured and made into a leader by this movement. But you know what happened when he betrayed. He passed away without being able to speak.”, RS Bharathi said.

He also said that it was he who sent Jayalalithaa to jail in TANSI case. “Go wake her up from the samadhi [memorial] and ask”, he added.

He went on to say in his speech “Recently, Jayalalithaa’s memorial hall was opened on January 27. They gave ₹40,000 per bus from all over Tamil Nadu. They gave ₹2000 to those who boarded the bus. They picked them up and dropped them off at Marina Beach. Edappadi and OPS thought that the whole crowd would come to the Jayalalithaa memorial. But the crowd thought, instead of visiting that ‘moodhevi’ (a derogatory slang in Tamil), they visited Kalaignar’s [Karunanidhi’s] memorial”, said R.S Bharathi.

He continued, “After MGR, did you (pointing out to ADMK) make RM Veerappan the Chief Minister? No. You made his wife Janaki the Chief Minister. After that, you made Jayalalithaa, who played MGR’s wife on screen for 25 years, the Chief Minister. First wife, then someone who acted as his wife on screen. Were you able to bring in Nedunchezhiyan? Were you able to bring Panruti Ramachandran? Were you able to bring in RM Veerappan? You are talking about dynasty politics looking at us. If you have no heir, how can we arrange for that?”

Speaking further about CM Palaniswami, RS Bharathi said “”When Udhayanidhi Stalin spoke, he said that you fell at the feet of Sasikala and became CM. But Udhayanidhi is facing a case for that. EPS went between the 2 legs of the table and then went below her 2 legs and fell down”.

Udhayanidhi Stalin speaking during a campaign spoke slanderous of CM Edappadi K. Palaniswami and Sasikala for which advocate Rajalakshmi lodged a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner’s Office. The Central Criminal Division police, which accepted the complaint, filed a case against Udayanithi Stalin in 4 sections.

However, this is not the first time DMK cadres have made obscene remarks in public speeches. Earlier, RS Bharathi found himself in a controversy when he made derogatory remarks on Dalit judges. Speaking at an event in the DMK youth wing headquarters, in February last year, the DMK MP had said it was due to the alms (picchai) given by the Dravidian Movement that persons from SC community became judges.

‘PM rang me first during India-China standoff, only after that he called CM’: DMK chief MK Stalin

DMK chief MK Stalin in an interview to Tamil news channel Thanthi TV said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi phoned him first when tensions had escalated at Ladakh border between India and China.

Responding to a question on whether he would be in good terms with Prime Minister Modi if he becomes Chief Minister, Stalin said that he is already having good relations with him.

“I am already in good relations with him. Even now if I meet him, I talk. He speaks to me on the phone regularly. I also talk to him. If there is a problem, I myself call him and talk to him about it.” he said.

“When we had the issue with China, I was the first person he phoned at that time. Only after that he called the Chief Minister”, he further added.

The interview further asks if he shares a relationship with him beyond politics, the DMK chief told that whenever Prime Minister Narendra Modi called, the latter would first enquire about the health of his mother. “That is the level of relations we share”, MK Stalin said.

However, he said that there was no chance of the DMK and the BJP entering into an alliance in future.

The portion of Stalin saying that PM Modi called him during the tiff with China has now got the internet in splits now  with many unleashing their humour.

Congress leader offers ₹ 1 Lakh to blacken the face of BJP leader Jagadish Adhikari

Jagadish Adhikari Pratibha Kulai

Congress leader and former Mangaluru corporator Prathibha Kulai recently invited controversy when she offered a reward of ₹ 1 lakh to anyone who blackens the face of BJP Dakshina Kannada district Vice President Jagadish Adhikari.

Jagadish Adhikari had allegedly made derogatory remarks against the Billava community, the community’s legendary twin hero-deities Koti-Chennayya and Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary, who also belongs to the aforesaid community. This incident drew sharp criticism from all quarters. Following Jagadish Adhikari’s comments, Vishwa Hindu Parishad Division Secretary Sharan Pumpwell too had demanded an unconditional apology from the BJP leader.

On Saturday, Jagadish Adhikari tendered an apology for his statements.

In a video clip uploaded on Facebook, that has subsequently gone viral, Prathibha Kulai said, “Adhikari should arrive at Garadi (the chief shrine of Koti-Chennayya) and tender an apology by offering ‘tappu kanike’ (expiatory donation) within three days. Or else, anyone from the Billava community can smear ink to his face. I will give ₹ 1 lakh reward to the person.”

She also insisted that Adhikari should tender an apology by falling at the feet of Poojary.

“Many youths are in jail for the sake of BJP and its leaders. Our youths do not have the power to question such an attitude in BJP,” she lamented. “Many call me as anti-Hindu. I have not issued any anti-Hindu statements. I have just said if you want die, then join organisations. The organisations should be in favour of the religion and not against the religion,” she stated.

Prathibha Kulai also urged the BJP leaders to expel Adhikari from the party. “Or else, Billavas, who constitute 60 % of the population in the district will give a befitting reply in the next election,” she threatened.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered under Sections 295 (A) and 505 of Indian Penal Code against Jagadish Adikari over his remarks by the Moodbidri Police based on a complaint by Raju PK, president of Brahmashri Guru Narayana Swamy Seva Sangha. The Sangha is an association for mainly members of the Billava community.

Legal opinion has also been sought regarding the video uploaded by Prathibha Kulai, according to Mangaluru Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar.

Karnataka: Vijayanagara is officially district no. 31

Vijayanagara district
Feature Image: Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru

The Karnataka State government officially declared the constitution of the Vijayanagara district via a gazette notification issued on Monday. This makes Vijayanagara the thirty-first district of the state.

Constituted by dividing the Ballari district, Vijayanagara will comprise six talukas ― namely, Hosapete, Kudligi, Hagari Bommanahalli, Hoovina Hadagali, Kottur and Harpanahalli. Hosapete will be the district headquarters.

The notification comes barely two months after the approval from the State Cabinet on November 18 last year. The decision had run into resistance among the ruling party’s leaders, including BJP MLA G Somashekhara Reddy representing Ballari City. Karnataka Minister for infrastructure development, haj and waqf, Anand Singh ― who is also the in-charge of the Ballari district ― had championed the creation of the new district. Singh is one of the seventeen disqualified MLAs whose rebellion led to the fall of the previous HD Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Singh is also believed to be dissatisfied at the ministerial portfolios given to him in the Cabinet reshuffle last month. Furthermore, it is believed that the plan to constitute the new district was originally mooted in September 2019 by Chef Minister BS Yediyurappa after Singh had put forth his demand.

The government’s notification is only the beginning of the Herculean tasks ahead, as there is still the arduous job of sifting through and refiling the relevant land records and documents from more than thirty departments. Civic infrastructure and adequate funds would have to be obtained to depute officials across various levels and set up offices, leading to increased government spending.

Pannaraj Sirigeri, convener and leader of Akhanda Ballari Jillegagi Horat Samiti, a movement for a unified Ballari district, said that they were disappointed with the bifurcation despite strong opposition.

Former UP crime boss Mukhtar Ansari claims he is related to ex-VP Hamid Ansari

Mukhtar Ansari Hamid Ansari

The notorious Uttar Pradesh gangster Mukhtar Ansari ― who is currently lodged in a prison in Punjab ― has filed a petition in the Supreme Court alleging a plot to kill him in a “state-sponsored encounter”.

Ansari in his petition has claimed that he belongs to a family which has produced leaders like former Vice President Hamid Ansari, Hindustan Times has reported.

Mukhtar Ansari is the grandson of Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari, an early president of the Indian National Congress and one of the founders of the Jamia Millia Islamia University.

Ansari has been fighting to make sure he is not sent to a jail in Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh. The Uttar Pradesh government is trying to bring him back to the state from a prison in Punjab.

In the petition, Ansari said that he is “part of a family that has made an immense contribution to the Indian freedom movement and has given India many leaders in the form of Shri Muhammad Hamid Ansari who was the vice president of India, Shri Shaukatullah Ansari who served as the governor of Odisha, Justice Asif Ansari who was the judge of the Allahabad high court, and his own father Subhanullah Ansari who was a freedom fighter and social worker”.

Ansari for a long time has alleged that the Uttar Pradesh government is seeking his personal custody in order to kill him. The Yogi Adityanath government has taken several tough measures against Mukhtar Ansari and his supporters and have even demolished his illegal properties.

Former Vice President Hamid Ansari has been in the news for all the wrong news recently due to a recent interview with Zee TV, where he said that Muslims in India are living in fear. However, when he was probed further and asked to give a reason, he could not. The former VP has publicly embraced hardline Islamic ideas far too often in the past, going as far as to support the establishment of Sharia courts in the country.
