TN Fin Min PTR Hounds Woman Journo Who Tweeted About DMK’s Hate Speech Against North Indian Migrant Workers

Tamil Nadu Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan yet again resorted to cyber-bullying a woman journalist after she called out the DMK for its hate speeches made against north Indian workers working in the state.

The has been a furore over the safety of north Indian migrant labourers in Tamil Nadu. Rumours through social media along with misreporting by a few Hindi media outlets led to subsequent amplification of these reports by BJP Bihar which had unleashed a political slugfest with migrant workers in Tamil Nadu facing the brunt.

On 3 March 2024, independent journalist and chief editor of The Lede had posted a Twitter thread on the north Indian migrant workers controversy in which she mentioned that the ruling party in Tamil Nadu which indulged in toxic violent rhetoric against North Indian labourers earlier was assuaging the situation putting out communiques in Hindi.

She also shared a link which had the list of instances when hate was peddled by DMK, NTK and Tamil YouTube channels against north Indian workers.

After the tweet gained significant traction, the hashtag #ArrestSandhyaRavishankar was seen trending on Twitter with many DMK cadres and sympathizers calling for the journalist’s arrest.

Following this threat, the Committee to Protect Journalists Asia (CPJ Asia) put a tweet in which the body condemned the coordinated attack on the journalist.

Responsding to this tweet, DMK Finance Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan who has a history of making personal remarks against anyone who doesn’t share his views, took to abusing the woman journalist calling her ‘immoral’, ‘compunction-less’, ‘defender-of-rapists’, and ‘propagator-of-fake-news’.

This is not the first time PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan had hounded woman journalists.

Recently, he had made personal remarks against The Hindu Publishing Group’s Chairperson Malini Parthasarathy who had tweeted about Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s clarification on the Tamil Nadu versus Thamizhagam debate. Prior to that, he had attacked Malini Parthasarathy for sharing Isha Foundation’s response to the DMK minister’s diatribe which The Hindu had carried in the form of an article.

Palanivel Thiagarajan when he was the DMK IT Wing had indulged in denigrating Sandhya Ravishankar who had exposed some of the false rhetoric of the Pollachi Sexual Abuse case. The ‘defender-of-rapists’ comment in his recent tweet was in response to this.

He had also abused business news journalist Chandra R Srikanth by invoking her caste identity.

TN BJP Head Booked For Tweet On North Indian Migrant Controversy, Annamalai Releases Hate Speech Made By DMK Leaders

The has been a furore over the safety of north Indian migrant labourers in Tamil Nadu. Misreporting by a few Hindi media outlets and subsequent amplification of these reports by BJP Bihar had unleashed a political slugfest with migrant workers in Tamil Nadu facing the brunt.

Earlier, reports had emerged about migrant workers flee Tamil Nadu for fear of being attacked after a few now-debunked videos became viral. In a phone call with Nitish Kumar on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reassured his Bihar counterpart about the safety of migrant workers. Tamil Nadu police have provided helpline numbers for migrant workers to call if there is an untoward incident.

On the other hand, many on social media accused DMK of peddling hate against north Indians hitherto. Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai had condemned the vile comments of DMK ministers who referred to them as Panipuri walas and Vadakkans, claiming that these irresponsible statements by DMK leaders triggered this exodus.

In response to this tweet, the Tamil Nadu cyber crime police have registered an FIR under sections 153 153(a) 505 of the Indian Penal Code.

Following this Annamalai released compilation of all the instances when DMK leaders including MK Stalin had spoken against north Indian migrant workers.

Here Are Some More Instances Of DMK Leaders Peddling Hate Against North Indians

Treading the path of its predecessor Dravidar Kazhagam, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam catapulted itself to power through the anti-Hindi agitations. While there was some merit to the agitations back in the 1960s when the then Congress government both at the Centre and State were inorginacally trying to make Hindi a link-language for the country, the DMK has always harped on to the anti-Hindi rhetoric time and again to inflame linguistic passions.

This attempt to exploit linguistic faultlines has today translated into a visceral hate towards north Indians. The Commune has collected a few instances in the past where DMK leaders made offensive remarks about north Indians and Hindi speakers. As reports emerge of migrant workers fleeing Tamil Nadu for fear of being attacked based on certain alleged videos spreading on social media, here are more instances of DMK leaders spreading hatred against North Indian workers and Hindi speakers.

KN Nehru About Bihari And Lalu Yadav

In 2021, DMK Minister for Municipal Administration, Urban & Water Supply KN Nehru, while addressing an employment camp at the DMK office in Trichy, said, “Biharis lack brain as Tamilians have. People from Bihar are not as intelligent as Tamilians.”

“As Railway Minister, Lalu Prasad Yadav packed the Railways with Biharis, especially at lower-level jobs, despite the fact that Biharis were less brainy than Tamils,” DMK Minister KN Nehru has claimed.

“Over 4,000 Biharis work at the Southern Railway’s Golden Rock Workshop in Tiruchy. Similarly, the majority of railway crossing gatekeepers are Biharis. This is all due to the handiwork of Lalu Prasad Yadav.  When he was railway minister, he had all of his fellow Biharis copy the railway exams and then get them jobs on the railways. These people speak neither Tamil nor Hindi and lack the intelligence that we Tamils possess. Yet they are working in Tamil Nadu,” DMK Minister KN Nehru stated.

TKS Elangovan Says Hindi Will Make Tamils Shudras

Another DMK MP and senior leader TKS Elangovan spread hatred against Hindi speakers, saying, “Hindi is the language of backward states, Hindi will make us Shudra.” Elangovan also made hateful remarks citing that speaking Hindi will make us Shudras.

TKS Elangovan said, “Hindi is the native tongue in only underdeveloped states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Look at West Bengal, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Punjab. Aren’t all these developed states? Hindi is not the mother tongue of the people of these states. Hindi will convert us to Shudras. Hindi will be no good for us.”

Elangovan claimed that speaking Hindi would enslave them. Accusing Hindi lovers of destroying the culture, he added, “They are trying to destroy the culture and trying to impose Manu Dharma through Hindi. This should not be allowed. If we did, we will be slaves, Shudras.”

Hindi Speakers Do Menial Jobs Said Dayanidhi Maran

Dhayanidhi Maran, DMK MP, stated in a public meeting that people who learned Hindi work as construction workers and wash toilets in Tamil Nadu, whereas Tamilians hold high-level positions in the IT sector.

He said,” We asked you to study Tamil and English. you studied. Look at Sundar Pichai, he is now the CEO of Google. He would have been a construction worker if he had studied Hindi. Our children hold high-level positions in IT firms and earn a good living. Look at those who studied Hindi. They work as construction workers and clean toilets.”

This other time, while speaking at a public meeting he had called north Indians and Hindi speaking people as ‘idiots’ who will vote for BJP.

Vadakkan Slurs Hurled By DMK MLA TRB Rajaa And His IT Wing

DMK MLA TRB Rajaa had spewed venom against north Indians umpteen number of time. He had once said ‘Vadakkans’ (slur for North Indian) don’t have a sense of democracy adding that Biharis will remain at the bottom because of their voting choices.

https://twitter.com/TRBRajaa/status/1326047843748966401

Isai, the DMK state deputy secretary of the IT wing, has used slurs like “Paani puri vaayan” and “Paanparak Vaayan” to insult north Indian migrant workers.

DMK Minister Moorthy Calling For Boycott Of North Indian Businessmen

Recently, DMK Minister Murthy incited hatred towards North Indian businessmen by stating that they should not be allowed to do business in Tamil Nadu and that only Tamil businessmen should do business through out Tamil Nadu. He also suggested that Tamil businessmen come forward to help send North Indian businessmen out of Tamil Nadu.

RS Bharathi Demeaning North Indians

DMK Organizational Secretary RS Bharathi sparked a controversy by saying that North Indians sell panipuri in Tamil Nadu and the Governor is also like them. He also compared the Governor to a migrant worker from Bihar and said that he would not have left without being beaten had Jayalalitha been alive.

When MK Stalin Peddled Xenophobia

MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, himself has incited hatred against North Indians working in Tamil Nadu. He stated, while campaigning for the 2021 state assembly elections in Tiruvannamalai on March 25, 2021, “They’re conspiring to place Hindi-speaking youngsters in jobs in Tamil Nadu and grow BJP through that here. The Edappadi Palaniswami government may be a mute spectator to this. But DMK or Tamil Nadu people won’t let that happen.”

https://twitter.com/Bagavathprathee/status/1632253949893029894

In the run up to the 2021 Assembly elections, the DMK had also released political ads in which youngsters can be seen alleging that Edappadi Palaniswami government is giving Tamil Nadu jobs to north Indians.

Pro-DMK YouTube Channels

Jeeva Sagapthan, a DMK sympathiser posing as a journalist, stated that North Indians with less knowledge than Tamils are occupying jobs in Tamil Nadu. He added that the North Indian workers will change the demography of Tamil Nadu and vote in favour of BJP as it is a North Indian party. His viral social media video is just the tip of the iceberg. In several videos on his YouTube channel, he is constantly spreading hatred against North Indians.

Other rabid Dravidian Stockist and DMK propaganda channels like U2 Brutus, Tami Kelvu too had peddled such xenophobia against migrant workers.

It is this hate seeded, watered and nurtured by the DMK and other Dravidian Stockist fringe outfits that has now come back to haunt them.

Having realised the gravity of the situation now, the DMK is now trying to assuage the situation with communiques in Hindi with Stalin himself reaching out in Hindi.

Hawaii’s Hidden Hindu Treasure: A Tamil Hindu Monastery In The Pacific

When one thinks of Hindu monastic orders, one usually imagines them in India or other Asian countries where the religion has a long history and a large following.

Discussions on any Hindu sanyasi/monk organisation typically bring to mind organisations like the Ramakrishna Mission founded by the world-renowned Swami Vivekananda, the Gujarat-based BAPS Swaminarayan Order, older Indian monk orders inspired by Sri Shankaracharya, the women-centric Brahma Kumaris Order, the Bharat Sevashram Sangha and a multitude of other, small, regional guru-inspired groups or individuals scattered all across India, some known and many choosing to remain unknown.

But few people know that there is a unique and vibrant Hindu monastery in Hawaii, a US territory in the Pacific Ocean. This monastery follows the South Indian Saiva Siddhanta tradition and has been serving as a spiritual sanctuary and a cultural hub for Hindus and seekers from around the world for over five decades. In this article, we will explore the origins, activities, and achievements of this remarkable Hindu institution in Hawaii.

Hinduism In Hawaii

It comes as a surprise to most when one discovers information about a distinctly South Indian Hindu monk order, halfway across the globe, in the Pacific Ocean islands of Hawaii, a territory of the USA. The Hindu monastery and temples are located on Hawaii’s Kauai island.

Two traditional South Indian Saivite Hindu temples are located on the monastery’s 382 acres, Kadavul Temple and the Iraivan Temple, a rare, all-granite Chola-style temple carved in Bangalore, India, and assembled on Kauai.

Kadavul Temple, Kauai
The San Marga Iraivan Temple, Kauai Island

The lush temple grounds are home to granite murtis of Dakshinamurti, Hanuman, Shanmugam, Narmada Lingam, Murugan’s Shakti Vel, Ganesha, Nandi, the Guru Parampara, and more.

The core of the monastery is the renowned Kadavul Temple in which Lord Siva Nataraja is enshrined.

Kauai’s Hindu Monastery: A Sacred Sanctuary For Shiva Worship

Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami (1927-2001) founded the Saiva Siddhanta Church in 1949 and established this powerful spiritual sanctuary in 1970. It is the home of the current guru, Bodhinatha, and his order of swamis, yogis, and sadhakas from different nations. The monastery is the headquarters and theological seminary of Saiva Siddhanta Church. It is also home to the Himalayan Academy (1965), Hinduism Today magazine (1979), and Hindu Heritage Endowment (1995).

The monastery’s guru lineage is rooted in the Tamil Saiva tradition of Sri Lanka and South India. This ancient spiritual path was brought to America by Satguru Sivaya Subramuniyaswami (Gurudeva, 1927-2001) and continues today under his successor, Satguru Bodhinatha Veylanswami.

It was in 1970 that Gurudeva (1927–2001) founded this centre. He had travelled the world over with his “Innersearch Travel-Study” programs, seeking the perfect place for his spiritual headquarters. In 1968 the group stayed for three weeks at the Tropical Inn resort, as this property was then called. He had found his ideal location. In the decades to follow, the monastery developed and flourished based on the time-tested culture of Hinduism.

The Mystical Tradition Of The Nandinatha Sampradaya

The monastery’s religious tradition is the Nandinatha Sampradaya, which follows the monistic school of Saiva Siddhanta. The lineage is known as the Kailasa Parampara which extends back 2,200 years and beyond to Maharishi Nandinatha and his eight disciples—Sanatkumara, Sanakar, Sanadanar, Sananthanar, Sivayogamuni, Patanjali, Vyaghrapada and Tirumular.

The philosophy is called Advaita Saiva Siddhanta or Advaita Ishvaravada, known in English as monistic theism or panentheism. Monistic theism simultaneously accepts that God has a personal form, that He creates, pervades, and is all that exists and that He ultimately transcends all existence, and that the soul is, in essence, one with God.

Joining The Saiva Siddhanta Yoga Order In Kauai

Kauai’s Hindu Monastery or Kauai Aadheenam (known to some as The Himalayan Academy) accepts young male candidates from every nation- young men from all over the world, who wish to follow an inner path of spiritual striving and religious service and are under the age of 24 (under 23 if outside USA), may be considered in their quest for joining the Saiva Siddhanta Yoga Order. The monastic order’s principal goals: striving to know the true, deeper meaning of Lord Shiva’s teachings and serving others. Following the monastic traditions of South India and Sri Lanka, the monks live in monasteries, away from the material world, to worship, meditate, serve, and realise the truth of the Vedas and Agamas, uplifting the world by their example.

The Remarkable Life And Legacy Of Gurudeva Subramuniya

Gurudeva, the founder of the Monastery in Hawaii, was born in California, USA, and grew up near Lake Tahoe. Orphaned at age 11, he was raised by a family friend who had spent years in India and who brought him into the culture and beliefs of Hinduism. Trained in classical Eastern and Western dance and the disciplines of yoga, he became the premier danseur of the San Francisco Ballet at age 19.

At the height of his career, he renounced the world, and in 1947 he sailed to India in quest of his spiritual master. In a remote Sri Lankan cave, he fasted and meditated until he burst into enlightenment. Soon after, he met Siva Yogaswami, who gave him the name Subramuniya and initiated him into Hindu monasticism. From then on, the great truths flooded through him like a torrent. The nature of reality, metaphysical principles, and methods for facing life’s challenges were obvious to him. What philosophers struggle to explain in complex theories, he articulated in simple language from his own experience. Ultimately, the cream of his inspired talks became the 3,000-page trilogy of “Dancing, Living, and Merging with Siva”, the first cogent, comprehensive expression of monistic Saiva Siddhanta in the English language.

The establishment of a Hindu temple in Hawaii is testimony to the eternity of Sanatana Dharma.

BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan Urges TN Govt To Slap NSA On Those Who Spew Hatred On Migrant Workers

With news of migrant workers in Tamil Nadu fleeing the state, organisations such as the South Indian Mills Association (SIMA), the Chennai Hotel Association, and the Tiruppur Exporter Associations have come forward to offer assistance to the migrant workers. It has been reported that North Indian migrant labourers, primarily from Tiruppur and surrounding areas, were fleeing the state fearing attacks against them.

In this context, Tamil BJP Coimbatore South MLA and BJP National Women’s Wing President Vanathi Srinivasan has urged the Tamil Nadu government to arrest those who spread venom against North Indian workers under the National Security Act (NSA).

In a press release MLA Vanathi Srinivasan said, “It is deeply concerning that labourers from northern states working in Tamil Nadu are returning to their home states out of fear of insecurity. Every Indian citizen has the right under our Constitution to live and work anywhere in India.”

MLA added, “People from one state moving to another, settling down, and raising families for generations has been happening in India for a long time. I’ve been travelling through out the country since becoming the BJP’s National President for Mahila Morcha. I’ve travelled to every state and union territory. Everywhere I go, I run into native Tamils. I even met Tamils in Lakshadweep, which is 400 kilometres from Cochin by sea. When they saw me, they ran up to me and hugged me as if they were seeing one of their own relatives.”

Vanathi Srinivasan added that Tamils had contributed to the development of major cities such as Delhi, Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Bengaluru, and Tamils such as Tamil Selvan have become MLAs in Maharashtra and various others have become councillors in the Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru Municipal Corporations, demonstrating that Tamils are present throughout India. During her campaign for Chandigarh Municipal elections, she met Tamils descended from Cuddalore, Salem, and Villupuram in Chandigarh.

She further said, “No state in India is inhabited solely by its indigenous people. It does not work. People from every state work in every other state. Every major city in India is now a mini India.”

She added, “We adhere to the high civilization and culture of ‘Vasudaiva Kutumbakam’ and ‘Yadum Oore Yavarum Keleer,’ which mean that the world is one family. People of Tamil Nadu do not see any difference. Tamils are used to seeing everyone as brothers. However, a few fringe groups are sowing hatred against North Indian workers in order to divide the people for political gain. For many years we have been insisting that this should be nipped in the bud. Workers from northern states do not come to Tamil Nadu on their own; rather, Tamil shop owners and businessmen bring North Indians to Tamil Nadu for work. If there are no workers from the northern states, the industries in Tamil Nadu will come to a standstill.”

MLA Vanathi Srinivasan went on to say that business organisations such as the Federation of Tamil Nadu Traders Associations, SIMA, and the Chennai Hotel Associations have expressed concern that their operations have been harmed because northern workers are fleeing due to fear.

MLA further added, “Shri. M.K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, proudly declared that he had entered national politics. The time had come to put his words into action. “India is one nation, and this nation belongs to all,” is the essence of national politics.”

She concluded by saying, “Therefore, the Tamil Nadu government should take strict action against the organizations, their leaders and individuals who are sowing hatred against the North Indian workers. They should be arrested under strict laws like the National Security Act. It is the responsibility of the Tamil Nadu government to protect workers who contribute to the development of the state. The Chief Minister should ensure it.”

DMK Which Whips Up Anti-Hindi Rhetoric Puts Communique In Hindi To Allay Fears Of North Indian Migrant Workers

In a phone call with Nitish Kumar on Saturday, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin reassured his Bihar counterpart about the safety of migrant workers, amid reports of alleged attacks on people from Bihar.

According to a statement released by the chief minister’s office, as some fake videos were circulated alongside real incidents of North Indian labourers being attacked in Tamil Nadu, such as the one that occurred in a train in Tamil Nadu where a Vizhuppuram man assaulted migrant workers, Chief Minister Stalin said that those indulging in rumour-mongering were acting against the country and its integrity.

“Tamil Nadu Government and People will always stand by our migrant brothers,” Stalin told Bihar Chief Minister, according to the statement.

Stalin was quoted in the press release as saying, “Migrant workers should not be concerned. If there is a threat, you can contact the police department’s helpline numbers, which have been announced by the police.”

In this situation, the Tamil Nadu police have provided helpline numbers for migrant workers to call if there is an untoward incident. Migrant workers can contact police at 0421-2203313, 9498101300, or 9498101320.

However, the police announcement drew criticism for the DMK government because it was written in Hindi as well. Netizens pointed out that the party (DMK), which resorted to erasing Hindi sign boards with black ink, is now forced to provide assurances to migrant workers in Hindi.

It should be noted that a bus conductor of the TNSTC bus from Kavindpadi bus stand to SIPCOT industrial estate at Perundurai was placed under suspension for one day for putting up a route board in Hindi and English.

The alleged incident occurred in June 2018. Following the opposition and social media campaign by the DMK, DK, and other Dravidian parties, the ruling ADMK government was forced to suspend the conductor. Srinivasan, the bus conductor has put a route board on the bus in English and Hindi to help the migrant workers from Northern and Eastern states in the area.

The Coimbatore district administration has also been forced to issue a circular ensuring the safety of migrant workers. It is worth noting that the press release is also written in Hindi. In a statement, Coimbatore district Collector said,” Coimbatore district is an industrial district with people and workers from all over the country working in industrial companies and various industries. It is a district where the people live peacefully and safely without discrimination. All employers provide housing, food, wages, and educational opportunities for their employees. So far, the district administration has taken excellent and timely steps to maintain law and order. Misinformation is spreading on WhatsApp and social media that workers from the north state are in danger in the Coimbatore district and are fleeing the city. All of these things are rumours spread with malicious intent.”

The press release added,” To resolve the grievances and grievances of out-of-state workers, a “Committee to Redress the grievances of Migrant Workers” has been set up under the chairmanship of the Revenue Officer of Coimbatore District, and to promptly act upon the grievances received through it. So, if there is any threat to their safety or a problem at their workplace, out-of-state workers can immediately contact the Disaster Management Department at the Coimbatore District Collector’s Office at toll free number 1077.”

They further said,” You can also contact Coimbatore Municipal Commissioner of Police Office Control Room Phone / Mobile No. 0422-2300970 / 9498181213, 8190000100, 9443808277 and Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police Office Control Room Mobile No. 9498181212, 7708100100.”

Congress MLA-Elect Elangovan Wipes Off Sacred Ash From Forehead, Video Goes Viral

Tamil Nadu Congress leader EVKS Elangovan, was declared as the winner of the Erode East by-election, securing 1,09,906 votes winning with a margin of 66,087 votes. The by-election to the constituency came due to the until me death of his son Thirumahan Ee Ve Raa.

The by-election in Erode East had turned into a high stakes affair with the DMK luring voters with cash, watches, pressure cooker, anklets, silver lamps, etc to vote for its ally Congress’ candidate EVKS Elangovan. Voters were also given dhoti, saree along with pictures of Lord Annamalaiyar (Lord Shiva) and Goddess Unnamalai Amman (Goddess Parvati).

https://twitter.com/S_Praba_Ntk/status/1627883776830279680

It is worth mentioning that the DMK is a party known for its anti-Hindu tirade. EVKS Elangovan is the grandson of EV Ramasamy Naicker (known as Periyar by his followers) who in his lifetime had abused Hindus and Hinduism day in and day out.

With the elections getting over, EVKS Elangovan who was spotted wearing the vibhuti (sacred ash) on his forehead, rubbed it off as he saw media reporters waiting.

Many on social media lashed out at the DMK and its ally Congress MLA for its hypocrisy.

With Migrant Workers Leaving TN Concerned About Their Safety, Mills, Textile And Hotel Associations Extend Support

The opposition BJP in Bihar created a ruckus in the state Assembly before staging a walkout on Friday, demanding that a team of House members be sent to Tamil Nadu to investigate reports of attacks on Bihari migrants working in Tamil Nadu. Misreporting by a few Hindi media outlets has unleashed s political slugfest with migrant workers in Tamil Nadu facing the brunt.

Nevertheless, there have been several incidents of violence reported against workers from other states.

North Indian labourers were attacked in Chennai by a Vizhupuram man who claimed that their jobs were taken by Hindi speakers, and a Bengali construction worker who was stranded near Kelambakkam in Chengalpattu district was blindly attacked by local youths who mistook him for a thief, to name a few such incidents in Tamil Nadu where migrant labourers are attacked in last few days.

Because of increasing hostility against them, many migrant workers in and around Tirupur who form the backbone of the thriving textile industry, have been thronging railway stations. In this situation, the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) issued a press release urging North Indian workers not to leave Tamil Nadu, claiming that if they do, the entire textile industry in Tamil Nadu will collapse.

In a statement, SIMA said,” Tamil Nadu produces 45 percent of all cotton yarn in India. After agriculture, the textile industry in Tamil Nadu provides the most job opportunities for illiterate and less educated men and women in the country. Tamil Nadu began to face labour shortages as a result of rapid industrial growth. To address this, migrant workers from Bihar, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Assam, and West Bengal have come forward to work, and we have employed them for the past ten years. Migrant workers are employed not only in the textile industry, but also in other industrial and service sectors.”

The press release added, “Mr. T. Rajkumar, President of the Textile Federation of India, and Mr. Ravi Sam, President of the South Indian Cotton Association, addressed the media at a press conference held today in Coimbatore. They stated that there is no wage discrimination between local and migrant workers, and that the industry treats both workers equally. In fact, industrialists provide migrant workers with food and lodging based on their requirements. However, in recent weeks, some groups and political organisations have created unnecessary controversies surrounding the recruitment of migrant workers, arguing that migrant workers from North India should not be allowed to work in Tamil Nadu.”

SIMA further added, “They (Raj Kumar and Ravi Sam) went on to say that such organisations are sowing seeds of hatred in the minds of Tamil Nadu people and workers against the use of migrant labour. Such attitudes and demands of such groups will have an impact not only on the industrially developed state of Tamil Nadu, but also on the overall performance of the Textile industry. Furthermore, they stated that if this problem is not addressed at an early stage, the state’s industrial development will suffer.”

SIMA further said, “They (Raj Kumar and Ravi Sam) also pointed out that the Tamil Nadu government is trying to attract substantial investments to the state. They claimed that there was no conflict between migrant workers and local workers, and that social media reports were false and did not accurately reflect the situation. Tamil Nadu Police Superintendent Mr. Shailendra Babu revealed this in a video.”

The press release stated, “Mr. Rajkumar and Mr. Ravi Sam stated that on March 2, a video meeting was held in Coimbatore under the leadership of the District Collector of Coimbatore to discuss the situation, and the reality was explained.”

At the same time, steps are being taken to instill confidence in migrant workers to work in Tamil Nadu without any fear, they said. They urged the Tamil Nadu government to take serious action against the troublemakers through the appropriate departments, to protect industry and the working class, and to restore industrial peace in the state.

Tiruppur Exporters Association Chairman “Padmashree” Dr A Sakthivel too issued a statement in this regard. He assured the migrant labourers that the exporters are with them and that they should not be concerned about the situation. He also stated that he and his team will provide all types of assistance to migrant workers.

In a similar statement, the Chennai Hotel Association expressed concern that North Indians leaving the state would negatively impact their business.

Chennai Hotel Association said, “Attacking northern state labourers who work in Tamilnadu on various tasks is an inhuman act because these people are doing work that our people do not want to do.”

They also stated that the government must ensure the safety of migrant workers and that all attacks on migrant workers must cease immediately. They also stated that if the attacks continue, the food industry will be paralysed. They urged the Tamil Nadu government to take strict action in this regard.

However, the DMK IT wing and unofficial DMK mouthpieces like Behindwoods and The News Minute, including their journalists, who were referring to North Indian labourers as ‘Vadakkans’ until now, having realised the gravity of the situation are now attempting to portray it as migrant labourers going to their homes for celebrating Holi festival.

The Tamil Nadu police has launched a help line to reach out to migrant worker who are in distress.

While condemning the spread of fake videos about migrant workers being attacked in Tamil Nadu, BJP Tamil Nadu President also condemned the vile comments of DMK ministers who referred to them as Panipuri walas and Vadakkans, claiming that these irresponsible statements by DMK leaders triggered this exodus.

Anti Caste Legislation Of Seattle: A Tool Demonize Hindus In The West

On Tuesday, 21 February, outgoing Seattle City Council member Kshama Sawant, a member of the Trotskyist Socialist Alternative political party, succeeded in passing a bill adding the category of ‘caste’ to the city’s non-discrimination statute. Many supported it and many opposed it. Those who oppose it do so, not because they disagree on whether caste discrimination should be addressed, rather their point of contention was about how it should be addressed. Thus, first time in the history of the United States a city passed in effect a ‘discriminatory’ legislation targeting a specific community based on their ethnicity or national origin and on basis of prejudiced dogma that they have such a unique form of bigotry that a special policy shall be bought in just to monitor them. The bill does not even consider the repercussions it can have on the harmony of Hindu communities in Western nations. In this context this article will understand why anti-caste legislation by a city in the USA represents the rising trend of Hindu phobia in the West?

“For the First time in the history of the United States a city passed in effect a ‘discriminatory’ legislation targeting a specific community based on their ethnicity or national origin and on basis of prejudiced dogma that they have such unique form of bigotry that a special policy shall be brought in just to monitor them. The bill does not even consider the repercussions it can have on the harmony of Hindu community in Western nations.”

As soon as these incidents unravelled, Hindu American Foundation (HAF) co-founder and Executive Director Suhag Shukla said in an official statement, “Throughout our two decades of existence, HAF has maintained that caste discrimination is wrong, violating core Hindu principles of the divine oneness of all beings. At the same time, we maintain that the singling out of South Asians and the addition of ‘caste’ to the non-discrimination policy violates the policies it now amends. The City of Seattle has voted to treat South Asians so that no other ethnic or racial community is treated under the guise of non-discrimination. It has voted yes to discriminating against ethnic minorities, repeating the ugliness of nativists in the state nearly a century ago.” To put it into perspective, it is the US we are talking about. A progressive nation that is open to freedom of speech and expression, but the parameters in the bill makes it blatantly violative of US constitutional guarantees.

HAF Managing Director Samir Kalra said, “Seattle has taken a dangerous misstep here, institutionalising bias against all residents of Indian and South Asian origin, all in the name of preventing bias. When Seattle should be protecting the civil rights of all its residents, it is actually violating them by running roughshod over the most basic and fundamental rights in US law, all people being treated equally.” HAF further noted that Councilmember Sawant claimed caste discrimination is “rampant” in the US. However, only the Carnegie Endowment has done the only authoritative survey on discrimination against the Indian and South Asian communities in the country that noted that caste-based discrimination is rare in the US. The survey specifically debunked the methodology and findings of the dubious organisation Equality Labs, which was the base of Sawant’s resolution. First Hindu and Indian State Senator of Ohio, Niraj Antani, criticised the ordinance passed by Seattle. He said, “I condemn in the strongest terms the ordinance passed by the Seattle City Council. Caste discrimination simply doesn’t exist now. Adding it to their non-discrimination policy is Hindu phobic and is a tool for those who are anti-Hindu use to discriminate against Hindus in America, India, and around the world. Instead of passing this racist policy, Seattle should be passing policies to protect Hindus from discrimination.” The mainstream media is mostly silent on the issue. HAF added that by passing the resolution, Seattle had violated the equal protection and due process guaranteed to every person by the United States Constitution. Notably, as per the constitution, the state is prohibited from treating people disparately on the basis of their national origin, religion or ethnicity. The Foundation’s attorneys contended that the resolution would implement a vague, facially discriminatory and arbitrary category against the Hindus.

Sawant has described the bill as “historic.” That’s true. But for different reasons than she’s touting. Sawant’s wordings of the bill specifically defines caste discrimination as something found in the “South Asian region” and then goes on to falsely tie caste to Hinduism, by writing that “its existence is linked to the religiously sanctioned social structure of Hinduism.” The bill also added immigrants and diasporic communities from Japan, certain African countries and the Middle East. These wordings made the situation even worse by targeting Hindu diaspora abroad. The bill is a true representation of Western misunderstanding of Hindu culture and civilization and it is an act of targeting Hindu’s rather than addressing the violence committed against the community. But politicians and mainstream media are silent on the issue. Whatever their agenda may be, the facts on the ground are crystal clear for anyone to inspect. The ground report from the west reflects the true picture of rising extremism in the west against the Hindus. Let me paint a clearer picture from recent examples.

Hindu phobia or anti-Hindu hatred have a tragically long history which continues to this day across the globe. They are fuelled by a range of factors, including religious intolerance, religious exclusivism, a lack of religious literacy, misrepresentation in the media, academic bias still rooted in oftentimes racist, colonial-era mis portrayals and, in the diaspora, generalised anti-immigrant xenophobia and hatred. This has been professed by colonisers of the Indian subcontinent in form of control over temple wealth and enactment of acts such as Lex Loci Act, 1850 which was one of the root causes for 1857 first war of Indian Independence. Presently, this is being done in Islamic countries and western nations which are being ignored by mainstream media. In Pakistan for example, 1,000 girls between the ages of 12-25 from minorities are forcibly converted to Islam every year and married to their abductors, which described the situation as a “human-rights catastrophe” and in Bangladesh, these incidents are being considered as a part of daily life for Hindus. For example, a mob of 200 perpetrators desecrated ISKCON Radhakanta Temple in Bangladesh’s Dhaka which was part of incidents targeting Hindu’s in Bangladesh and surprisingly this incident happened on March 17th which came right after the United Nations (UN) declared March 15th as International Day to combat Islamophobia.

India had risen to this occasion and rightly questioned the existing bias during the passage of the UN resolution. During the passage, India along with France gave an explanation of ‘Vote of concern’ stating that combatting the hatred against one specific religion was being elevated to an international day for the first time. In fact, this also marked the instance where in atrocities against other religions, specifically, non-Abrahamic religions are being ignored. The political ambivalence to concerns of Hindu community is also an issue in the West. Recent attacks and the lack of credible condemnation against vandalization of 3 Hindu temples in Australia, Vandalization of temples in Canada and general violence against Hindu’s in the Subcontinent speaks volumes on this issue. The US, leader of human rights enforcing its ambit via military measures across the world had never recognized slaughter of Hindu Bangladeshis during 1971 war but US administration was happy to recognise Armenian genocide by Turkey which fits their propaganda of being human rights champions perfectly.

Now, let us come back to what is happening in the US. Attacks against the Hindu community in the USA has become a persistent theme now. In a briefing hosted by the Coalition of Hindus of North America, Joel Finkelstein, the project’s lead researcher, pointed to memes and online social cyber signals referring to perceived “dirty” and “scamming” qualities of Hindus, as well as depictions of Hindus being brutalised. Many of the memes, he said, were manufactured out of commonly used tropes against Jewish people, using tilaks, swastikas and bindis to signify Hindu culture. Because the verbiage and tropes surrounding Hindu phobia are not yet recognized by social media platforms like Twitter, this kind of targeted hatred, which “reliably precedes real-world violence,” largely goes unchecked, Finkelstein said. Because the verbiage and tropes surrounding Hindu phobia are not yet recognized by social media platforms like Twitter, this kind of targeted hatred, which “reliably precedes real-world violence,” largely goes unchecked, Finkelstein said. “Unfortunately, these incidents are evidence of the unhindered Hindu phobia that refuses to be given mainstream acknowledgement,” said Pushpita Prasad, of the Coalition of Hindus of North America. She said COHNA (Coalition of Hindus of North America) often battles with academics, activists and “blue-check” journalists to acknowledge the existence of anti-Hindu hate.

The violence against Hindus and scathing attacks in the form of discriminatory legislation in western nations are resulting in a wave of anti-Hindu climate in Western nations. It is high time that these progressive regions acknowledge rampant anti-Hindu hate and take measures against it without discriminating against the victim itself.

Ahead Of Polls, Christian Orgs In Andhra & Telangana Lobby To Repeal GO Mandating Verification Of Religion For SCs

Well-funded Christian organisations with an agenda, are aggressively lobbying (one could call it, bullying) the state governments of Andhra and Telangana for the extension of Scheduled Caste (SC) benefits to persons even after converting to Christianity. The two Telugu states are scheduled for elections within a year – Telangana’s elections are to be held before the end of this year and Andhra Pradesh’s is expected to take place in the first half of next year.

A powerful, well-organised network of Christian organisations and church leaders many of whom receive questionable foreign funding, have chosen the pre-election time frame for demanding the repeal of a current state directive (A.P 1998 circular memo) seeking verification of religion and questioning the eligibility of SC converts to Christianity for making use of their previous Hindu caste-based government benefits such as reservations, economic and financial schemes and other special privileges granted at the Central and State level.

Back in 1977, when the impending dangers of a well-oiled Christian-evangelist-conversion-machine were relatively unknown, the Andhra Pradesh government had circulated a General Order (GO) that sought to give consent for extending special SC benefits meant for Hindu SC members, to those members that converted to Christianity or Buddhism. This state proposal had its share of challenges and two decades later in 1998, the Andhra Pradesh government indirectly tried to address this vote bank sensitive issue by releasing a 1998 memo in favour of conducting local, on-the-spot religious identification and verification by local government officials in order to ascertain eligibility for SC government benefits primarily meant for members of Hindu SC community as stated in the Indian Constitution.

Now, just in time for elections, the Christian organisations are lobbying for the disregard and scrapping of the circular memo issued in 1998 by the erstwhile unified Andhra Pradesh state Social Welfare Department with regard to the verification of an individual’s religion when in doubt and thereafter confirmation of the individual’s eligibility for utilisation of their previous or current Hindu caste status for availing government subsidies and privileges.

Current Indian law and census surveys require a citizen to state their caste only if the citizen belongs to any of the Indic religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, or Jainism. If you state your religion to be an Abrahamic one (Islam, Christianity) “caste” becomes irrelevant; the presumption is that the ‘caste’ question does not arise based on the understanding that the religions of Christianity and Islam do not recognise, include or practise any type of discrimination based on caste, which is an alien concept to them.

Caste provisions, protections, and special considerations were included in the Indian Constitution because of caste-based discrimination experienced by the lower castes within the Indic religions. The concept of a specific caste that one is born into, which carries forth into future generations, does not exist in the non-Indic religions (although many have argued that various types of race and class distinctions have always existed around the world),  hence the logical assumption is that caste does not and should not play a role in the rights and standing of an individual that chooses to convert to Christianity or Islam.

The premise and presumption for those designated ‘Scheduled Tribe’ are different. While a scheduled caste grouping is based on specific Indic religions, a scheduled tribe grouping is based on indigenous tribal customs and beliefs unique to each tribe, their geographical locations, their socio-economic status, and the need to provide tribal people with access to means of health, education, overall well-being and other indicators of modernization. A scheduled tribe (ST) status is not linked solely to the religion practised while a scheduled caste (SC) status is based on the religion practised. For 2-3 decades now, it has been observed and controversial remarks have been made about Christian missionaries targeting tribal populations because their special “ST” status would not be impacted by religion and tribals would continue to enjoy the Indian government’s special privileges while the Christians could continue with their goal of increasing the numbers of Christian converts in India.

The tribal-Christian scenario appears to get the best of both worlds, while many Hindu leaders worry that the primary purpose of an accorded special status for tribals is being misused, at the expense of the larger nation and ancient indigenous cultures. Christian zealots would like the scheduled tribe scenario for scheduled castes as well.  The Christian organisations are demanding the scrapping of the 1998 Andhra government memo, recommending a process of verifying the religion of SC beneficiaries first and thereafter determining their eligibility for Hindu SC government benefits, because a majority of the converted SC Christians practise the dual-identity principle whereby they are Christian in faith and belief but retain their Hindu names and backward caste certificates to continue using specially allocated government benefits meant for so-called ‘backward caste” Hindus.

Conversions from SCs into Christianity have taken place on a massive scale in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana (formerly, the larger combined state of Andhra Pradesh). Per the 2011 Census, there are officially 6.82 lakh Christians in Andhra Pradesh, while the actual number is estimated to be between 80-90 lakhs.

Many complaints and PILs in the recent past argue that converted Christians from Hindu scheduled caste status have already misused their special rights and protections under Indian Law by continuing to use their Hindu names and scheduled caste status, thus taking up a large share of the privileges meant for their fellow SC Hindu brethren. Who’s checking their application forms and their census inputs?

The law states that those converted to Christianity should apply for an OBC -C or BC -C category certificate (based on their state of residence) and quit utilising their previous Hindu SC or BC status. The OBC/BC -C category status offers far fewer economic, educational, employment, and financial benefits compared to the SC category which is why a majority of Christian converts continue to lie about their religion on Census forms and other important government forms that ask for caste information. The converted SC Christians are encouraged by their church organisations to continue deceiving the Indian government and State governments by misrepresenting their religion on government forms in order to pursue the misuse of government benefits and special privileges/protections specifically meant for Hindu members of the disadvantaged community. In fact, there have been instances where SC caste certificates have been cancelled by the appropriate District authorities when the potent SC/ST Atrocities Act was invoked but the complainant was found to be a converted Christian who can no longer use his SC/ST legal status.

Citizens have also argued that Christians and Muslims often use the caste argument to denigrate Hinduism while incentivising lower-caste Hindus to convert. Hindus rarely point fingers at any of the odd, unreasonable, illogical, or fanatic beliefs embedded in the Christian and Islamic doctrines. Hence, Hindus wonder why converted, ex-Hindus should be permitted to benefit from their previous Hindu caste status for free or subsidised economic, educational, or monetary benefits at the expense of the Hindus of the nation.
