TASMAC employees across Tamil Nadu will begin an indefinite strike from August 28 after talks with the Tamil Nadu government failed to resolve their long-pending demands, the Joint Action Committee of TASMAC trade unions said, as reported in Dinamalar.
The decision was reiterated at a preparatory conference held in Erode on Wednesday, ahead of the strike. TASMAC employees are demanding permanent employment and regular pay scales, along with other long-pending service-related demands.
The unions had earlier announced the indefinite strike, citing demands that they said have remained unresolved for nearly 23 years.
A conciliation meeting was held in Chennai with representatives of the TASMAC trade unions under the leadership of Prohibition and Excise Minister Vignesh. Senior officials, including the TASMAC Managing Director, participated in the discussions.
According to the unions, the government told them that their key demands could not be implemented immediately and requested that the strike be deferred until the department’s demands for grants were completed.
The Joint Action Committee rejected the request and maintained that the government had failed to take an immediate policy decision on their demands.
An emergency consultation meeting was subsequently held under the leadership of former MLA N. Periyasamy, where the unions unanimously decided to proceed with the strike from August 28.
The proposed action will see TASMAC employees across the state cease work indefinitely unless their demands are addressed.
