The Many Times TNM’s Shabbir Ahmed Got Schooled By Politicians In TN

Shabbir Ahmed of the Dravidianist-Leftist media outlet The News Minute was recently in the news for giving a veiled threat at Tamil Nadu BJP leaders saying if BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai didn’t mend his ways, things would take a different turn. He was referring to the alleged behaviour of the party’s state chief with press reporters.

Following this press meeting, journalists swarmed around Annamalai when they spotted him on 5 October 2023 after the executive committee meeting. Shabbir tried to play smart with Annamalai by asking him when he was going to release the ADMK corruption files, only to be royally thrashed by Annamalai who retorted saying, “I am not here to raise the TRP of News Minute”.

This is not the first time he has been schooled by Annamalai.

Other Times When Annamalai Showed Shabbir His Place

Shabbir, previously a Deputy News Editor at Times Now, joined TNM as a ‘Senior News Editor’ in February 2022. He is responsible for managing The News Minute Tamil’s YouTube channel, where he hosts the show ‘Yen Endra Kevi.’ The show primarily delves into the political landscape of Tamil Nadu, with a particular focus on critiquing the politics of BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai, which Shabbir finds contentious. Interestingly, Annamalai had previously called out Shabbir for his evident bias.

When Annamalai was hounded by Shabbir and his coterie of journalist friends over him allegedly referring to journalists as monkeys and why the PRO was asking them to come for the press meet, he shut up Shabbir by saying, “If you think Annamalai has made a mistake, you have the complete right to boycott me. I have not made a mistake so I will not apologize. Why should I apologise when I have not made a mistake? I have a problem with agenda journalists. If you take your individual decision to boycott me, I welcome it. Thank you.”

Not only did he face a reprimand from BJP Tamil Nadu chief Annamalai for his transgressions, but he has also been called out by politicians from various parties for his breach of journalistic ethics.

“Don’t Overdo It”: PMK Leader Anbumani Ramadoss Shuts Up Shabbir

Shabbir was put in his place by PMK leader Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss back in 2019 at the press meet organized by the party after it announced its alliance for the Lok Sabha polls. Shabbir bombarded the PMK leader with a barrage of questions, pushing his patience to the limit.

Shabbir asked Dr Anbumani Ramadoss, “Sir the questions arising here…”

Dr Anbumani shuts him up saying, “Shabbir I am done with you. It is not right on you. Don’t overdo it.” Shabbir continued to question Dr Anbumani saying he was asking legitimate questions. He begged him to take his one question but Dr Anbumani told him to sit down and that he was not going to take any questions from him and that he had answered 5 of Shabbir’s questions.

When DMK Thrashed Shabbir

In 2014, Shabbir Ahmed faced physical assault by DMK members, which seems to have subsequently led him to adopt a more subservient stance towards the party. He has been notably deferential when reporting on the DMK ever since. During the incident involving over 50 DMK supporters, three TV journalists, including the then Times Now reporter Shabbir Ahmed, were attacked outside the residence of party treasurer MK Stalin. This attack was triggered by the journalists’ discussion of Stalin’s contemplated resignation from party positions following the election results. The violent episode resulted in the damage of cameras and equipment and extended to target other members of the media.

“You Will Never Change”: When MDMK Chief Vaiko Hit Out At Shabbir

In yet another instance at a press meet called by the MDMK in 2016, in this video, MDMK Chief Vaiko is seen calling out Shabbir Ahmed saying, “Sir, Mr Shabbir, kindly listen to me, I was expelled from the DMK, you don’t know the fact. Don’t try to justify the culprits. I am sorry about the media, I know your inner mind, I know about you. Don’t try to blame me. I was expelled from the DMK, you don’t know the basic facts. You are trying to malign me. You will never change. Whatever happens, Shabbir will never change.”

Senior BJP Leaders School Shabbir

At the press meeting with Pon Radhakrishnan where he repeatedly complained about Annamalai, he got schooled by both Radhakrishnan and H Raja. Shabbir Ahmed raised “concerns” about Annamalai’s demeanour towards reporters, alleging disrespectful behavior, Pon Radhakrishnan replied saying, “Now you are asking a question, the others are silent and when another asked a question, the rest of you were silent. Why are you not following this with him? Don’t the journalists have their own dharma/duty? I am not finding fault with you. What I am asking you is, to give the same respect and treat the State President of Tamil Nadu BJP the same way as you would do with the other political party heads in the state”.

When a journalist blamed Annamalai for not attending the press meeting with the rest of the leaders, H Raja interjected and said, “I don’t approve of this. You should not say he doesn’t “know” to come to a press meet. Even in Delhi, press meetings are conducted, does the President attend all the meetings and answer the questions? It is the spokesperson who does it. Each party has its rules and methods. So don’t speak derogatorily about the State President, such remarks create an ill-will. So please avoid such questions.

Despite having been schooled by so many politicians, young and old, Shabbir Ahmed seems to have not learnt his lesson. Although he has gone soft on the DMK and its allies either by being polite or not asking controversial questions, he often flexes his ‘journalistic’ muscles before the BJP, particularly Mr. Annamalai.

AIADMK Calls Out TN Mainstream Media For Ignoring Pressing Issues Like Teachers’ Protest And Constantly Hosting Debates On BJP-AIADMK Alliance

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has vehemently voiced its concerns regarding the approach of media in the state when it comes to covering and debating on critical issues. The party alleges that certain Tamil channels have been neglecting significant issues faced by the people under the current Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government.

Don’t you see the struggle of today’s teachers? Can’t you hear the cries of that child? Do not your mouths dare to speak of it? As the fourth pillar of democracy, when will your conscience realize that keeping your eyes, ears and mouth closed so that you don’t see things that are against the government, don’t listen to things that are against the government, and don’t speak things that are against the government is a danger to democracy? How is it that today all TV debates are about the AIADMK alliance? Who is giving you instructions from above?“, the AIADMK said in its X post.

According to the AIADMK, Tamil channels have been reluctant to discuss or bring up issues affecting the public under the DMK’s leadership. It is alleged that these channels fear repercussions, including a potential decline in their viewership and rankings on Arasu Cable networks if they delve into topics that may not align with the ruling party’s stance.

Several pressing matters have been plaguing the public and the state at large – be it the ongoing teacher’s protest, the Cauvery issue, or even the cases of alleged medical negligence in TN government hospitals.

It has been noted that NewsJ Tamil, a media house aligned to the AIADMK has been actively engaging in debates about important matters such as the ongoing teachers’ protests. Apart from News J Tamil, News Tamil 24×7, and

The AIADMK has taken a strong stance against what it perceives as a predilection in the Tamil media landscape. Numerous challenges exist in Tamil Nadu, including caste-based atrocities, inadequate infrastructure facilities, substandard government schools and hospitals, and low-quality housing boards in areas like Perumbakkam, Semmenchery, and Kannagi Nagar.

The AIADMK has voiced its concerns about the media’s role and its alignment with the DMK government and that certain media outlets have become seemingly partisan and have ignored their responsibility as the fourth pillar of democracy.

Media outlets in Tamil Nadu have a history of peddling fake news, amplifying Brahmin hate, Hindu hatred, covering news that favour the ruling party, while also fanning North-south divide.

Facebook Page Of DMK’s Official Mouthpiece Murasoli Uploads Pornography In Its Status

Murasoli is the official mouthpiece of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). It was started by the late DMK patriarch Karunanidhi.

The Facebook page of Murasoli was caught uploading sleazy, pornographic material in its status.

https://twitter.com/SuryahSG/status/1710183563499536394

Although there has been no clarification on who uploaded pornographic material in the official Facebook page of the DMK mouthpiece, it is expected that it the party would come out with a statement saying that the “account has been hacked”. There has been no response from the DMK or Murasoli until the time of publishing this article.

It is note worthy to remember that BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai had once called Murasoli a toilet paper.

You can read more about Murasoli’s troubled relationship with decency in this article.

Meanwhile, many on social media have expressed disgust and have unleashed a flurry of meme over the episode.

This is not the first time that DMK or its party members have been associated with pornography.

In 2020, a DMK IT Wing office bearer from Thirupatthur district, Ajith, was arrested for sending explicit material to a 17-year-old girl and sharing manipulated images of himself with her. Ajith, son of Ponnusaamy from Mittalam village near Ambur, serves as a DMK IT Wing panchayat coordinator. Earlier, he faced charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for abducting a minor girl from the same area and was recently released on bail. Following his release, he repeated similar actions with another 17-year-old girl, leading to his arrest on charges of violating the POCSO Act and issuing death threats to a witness.

A.J. Manikkanan, an MLA representing Ulundurpettai in Kallakuruchi district, Tamil Nadu, found himself embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that his Twitter account had liked pornographic posts. Screenshots of the MLA’s Twitter activity, which allegedly included liking explicit and inappropriate content from various accounts, were widely circulated on social media. In response, the MLA claimed that his account had been hacked and reported the issue to Twitter Support. He also urged followers to disregard any likes and comments from his account. Subsequently, it was observed that Manikkanan’s Twitter handle had been removed from the platform.

In 2016, Tirupattur DMK MLA, K.R. Periyakaruppan was in the news owing to a viral obscene video in which he was found in a compromising position with another woman. The video, circulating on social media for over four days, had triggered anger among women in the constituency. During a campaign event, women in Erumapatti village pointed at Periyakaruppan, referring to him as ‘the man in the video,’ indicating the virality of the video.

“I’m Not Here To Raise TRP Of The News Minute”, TN BJP Head Annamalai Royally Shuts Down TNM’s Shabbir Ahmed

Shabbir Ahmed from The News Minute is back in the news, this time for his attempt at hounding Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President Annamalai at a press meet on 5 October 2023. However, Annamalai royally shut down the “journalist”.

During the press meeting, Shabbir Ahmed persistently targeted Annamalai with a series of questions and allegations. He brought forward ADMK accusations against Annamalai, suggesting that his remarks were the cause of the alliance’s breakup. Annamalai responded calmly, stating that he would not engage in responding to every allegation, focusing instead on his work and the BJP’s path for the future. Annamalai said, “This is not the only allegation against me, several political parties allege many things about me. I cannot keep answering every single thing. I am doing my work and I am clear about the path I need to take, I am also clear about which path the BJP has to take. So allegations and slanders will keep coming, I have never paid heed to them nor responded to them, so I will not respond to this also.”

When Shabbir raised the issue of Annamalai’s comments about Annadurai, the BJP leader skillfully shut him up, simply stating, “I am not interested in speaking about it, Shabbir Anna.”

However, Shabbir continued to press Annamalai with questions about the parties in the NDA in Tamil Nadu, prompting the BJP leader to challenge him to do his own research, saying, “You are a journalist; you do your research, why should I teach you?”.

As the conversation turned to Dr. Krishnasamy’s alleged comments on the “existence” of the NDA, Annamalai emphasised the BJP’s historical role in forming and convening the alliance, highlighting that the 2024 elections in Tamil Nadu would essentially be a battle between the DMK and the BJP.

Shabbir Ahmed persisted, questioning whether Annamalai would release corruption details about the ADMK after its exit from the alliance. Annamalai once again shut him down saying, “Shabbir Anna, “I am not here to raise the TRP of your News Minute. You are posting videos, you want likes and this and that. I will respond when I need to respond.”

This incident follows a recent development where Shabbir Ahmed was found making veiled threats toward Tamil Nadu BJP members during another press meeting, stating that the situation could take a “different turn.” He had said, “But at the same time, the reaction coming from the other side is severe and we are registering it because if it continues, it will take a different turn (vera maadhiri poidum)” when talking of Annamalai’s alleged insulting behaviour with journalists at press meets.

What happened at Annamalai’s press meet is despite senior party member Pon Radhakrishnan having requested the journalists at the other press conference to give Annamalai the due respect and treat him just as they would treat other political party chiefs. He had said, “Don’t the journalists have their own dharma/duty? I am not finding fault with you. What I am asking you is to give the same respect and treat the State President of Tamil Nadu BJP the same way as you would do with the other political party heads in the state”.

The alleged journalist took to social media platform X to rant. He posted, In today’s press conference: When asked about his comment on Annadurai, TN BJP Chief #Annamalai refused to comment When asked about when will he release AIADMK files, he says he will not give content for TRP When asked who are the NDA partners in TN, he says you can research.”

Netizens reminded him of how he got thrashed by members of the DMK in 2014 when he was associated with Times Now channel and questioned him if he would hound the DMK members like he does with Annamalai or other BJP members in Tamil Nadu.

Some even pointed out his hypocrisy. In the press meeting with Pon Radhakrishnan and other BJP members, he even suggested that Annamalai could respond “No comments” if he did not want to reply to any question posed by the media but after Annamalai gave him the royal “thrashing”, he complained about it.

Some even reminded him that it was not even an official press meeting but it was the media that landed in front of Annamalai and thrust their microphones into his face.

The next phase of Annamalai’s padayatra, named ‘En Mann En Makkal‘ (my land, my people), originally planned to commence on 6 October 2023, has been rescheduled to 16 October 2023 due to his health condition. The party released a medical report from a private facility, Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai, confirming that Annamalai has been diagnosed with a lower respiratory tract infection accompanied by bronchospasm. He has been recommended two weeks of rest.

“The**diya Paiyan”: After Glorifying Liquor, Smoking & Violence, Actor Vijay Uses Cuss Words In His Latest Film Leo

Amidst sky-high expectations from fans, the much-awaited trailer of actor Vijay’s latest film, ‘Leo’, was released on 5 October 2023. The film produced by Seven Screen Studio is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj whose earlier venture ‘Vikram’ with Kamal Haasan became a runaway hit.

The action-packed trailer opens with an aerial shot of a snowy Kashmir with Vijay’s voiceover narrating about a face-off between a serial killer and a police officer. From the trailer, it can be said that Vijay plays the role of a family man having a troubled past with some unfinished business.

In a scene, Vijay can be angrily screaming at a woman (probably his wife played by Trisha) saying “Evano oru the**diya paiyan irukantu.. aal aaluku enna potu uyir edutha, naan enna di pannuven?” which translates to “Some random ba*tard who looks like me.. but every guy is torturing me.. What can I do?“.

This mainstreaming of a misogynistic, sexist cuss word uttered by actor Vijay himself who has a lot of fan following including children has come under criticism.

While the actor never leaves a chance to lecture his audience with his kutti story on morals whenever he appears on stage off-screen, his on-screen activities is quite the contrary.

The song, “Naan Ready,” from the same movie Leo, appear to endorse the consumption of alcohol and tobacco.

“Naan Ready Than Varava (I am ready only, shall I come?)

Annan Naan Erangi Varava (Shall I take the plunge?)

Evan Thaduthun En Route-u Maradhappa (Nobody can stop and my route won’t change)

Naan Ready Than Varava (I am ready only, shall I come?)

Annan Naan Thaniya Varava (Shall I come alone?)

Poster Adi, Annan Ready (Stick posters, I am ready)

Throughout the song, Vijay is seen smoking while dancing, and the lyrics explicitly endorse alcohol and tobacco use.

In June 2023, Vijay felicitated the top three rank holders of the Class 10 and 12 board exams not district-wise but from all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu. During his speech, Vijay urged the young audience about the importance of voting, emphasizing their role as future voters and the responsibility of selecting good leaders.

During the same speech, Vijay also proclaimed, “When wealth is lost, nothing is lost; when health is lost, something is lost; when character is lost, everything is lost.”

Ironically, these very words have now come back to haunt Vijay. Many people have taken to social media to highlight the discrepancy between Vijay’s advice to students and his on-screen portrayal. They question whether promoting alcoholism, smoking and using cuss words aligns with the cultivation of good character among school children.

The Controversial Legacy Of Prem Nath Thapar And Nehru’s Military Skepticism

The controversy surrounding leftist propaganda portal NewsClick has exposed how the leftist ecosystem with relationships beyond the borders of India have influence in the Congress party. But this is not a new phenomena and has been prevalent since the time of Jawaharlal Nehru.

Individuals influenced by leftist ideology have walked the corridors of power under the Congress. Former Indian Army Chief of Staff (COAS), General Prem Nath Thapar, who led the Indian Army during the 1962 conflict with China was one such man.

The story goes something like this, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had a deep mistrust when it came to the military. In fact, after India’s independence, Nehru was of the belief that the country was in no need of a military when the police could provide security.

It was such arrogant naivete and mistrust of the army, that in 1959, he appointed Gen Thapar as the COAS over Lt General SPP Thorat who was recommended by General Kodendera Subayya Thimayya whom he along with then Defence Minister VK Krishna Menon disliked.

Nehru, who by then had achieved demigod status, wanted an army chief who would ply to their whims. Also, General Thapar became a relative when he married Bimla Bashiram Sehgal, sister of Gautam Sahgal, whose wife Nayantara Sahgal was a daughter of Vijayalaxmi Pandit and therefore niece of Jawaharlal Nehru.

In the 1950s, Nehru’s singular ambition was to be known as a great world leader and statesman, and for that to happen, he would go to great lengths. For example, he refused, twice when India was offered a seat as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in favor of China.

Other examples are his needless seeking of UN interference in Kashmir, the loss of Aksai Chin, and the Indus Water Treaty. Nehru believed that by using soft power, diplomacy, and appeasement he would be regarded as the messiah of world peace in the post-Second World War, post-colonial Cold War period.

However, by not listening to the advice given by General Thimayya who wanted Gen Thorat to take over, Nehru was responsible for India’s loss in 1962.

Instead, Nehru superseded six officers and appointed Lieutenant General Brij Mohan Kaul as the Chief of General Staff from 1961–1962.

Kaul’s meteoric advancement was clearly not based entirely on merit or on the basis of his Service dossier. Competent observers were of the opinion that Menon’s aim was to clear the way for him to succeed Thapar as the Army Chief. No one doubted that it was Kaul who would run the Army, with Thapar as the amiable, nominal Chief.

General Thorat was called a man of great character and strategic vision and he will remain one of the best Army Chiefs India ever had. Having closely assessed Chinese military tactics when he was the chief of the Custodian Force of India he rightly predicted as early as 1959, that China had designs in Tibet.

In the book The Unfought War of 1962: An Appraisal, by Raghav Sharan Sharma, he mentions that Lt General B.M. Kaul was a distant relation of Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and  VK Krishna Menon who was the then Defence Minister appointed Lt General B.M. Kaul as Chief of General Staff, against the recommendation of the outgoing Chief of Army Staff, General K.S.Thimayya. The reason Gen Thimayya had opposed Kaul was he was an Army Service Corps officer, with no prior combat experience and had never commanded a fighting unit earlier

This was the beginning of the end and as it is mentioned in the book, The Himalayan Blunder, “With the eclipse of General Thimayya, General Thorat’s claims to be the Chief were waived aside and General Thapar’s seniority was invoked to promote him, in April 1961. General S. D. Verma, who was commanding Ladakh and who held similar views to General Thorat, was superseded, his seniority being ignored. The truth is that officers who opposed the indiscriminate opening of posts were ear-marked for elimination. There was no room for practical, professional views in Mr. Nehru’s quest for political survival in the face of a militant Opposition. In April 1961 General Thimayya was retired, General Thorat was pensioned off and General Verma, a man of principle, resigned immediately he was superseded” (Page 73, 74, The Himalayan Blunder Brig John Dalvi)

As mentioned, Nehru had deep suspension of the military and in the name of development, he ignored the need of the armed forces. How they operated with limited resources and materials is another story altogether. After Generals Thorat and Verma were pensioned off at a time when India was in need of “surplus military talent”, Nehru should be held responsible to have dispensed with the services of these capable men. In many ways, the symptomatic advancement of Gen Thapar and the elevation of Gen Kaul as the COAS was of India’s limited preparations for war with China. In 1962, the Indian military was led by men who were inadequate.

The story of Gen Kaul and General Thapar are intertwined as both manage to curry favor from Nehru.

Here is an excerpt from the book, The Himalayan Blunder:

“He (Kaul) managed to keep himself away from hardship and learning the nuances of a military commander as a junior officer and later in service, managed to grab important Army senior command appointments due to his “pull”. His involvement with Jawaharlal Nehru later turned out to be a major reason for the shameful loss and massacre of Indian troops at the hands of the Chinese”

K. Satchidananda Murty wrote a biographical book about President Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, named Radhakrishnan: His Life and Ideas. In the book, he quoted the former president as having expressed doubts over the capability of Lt General B.M. Kaul.

Excerpt from the book:

“The General Officer was well known in the Army and Political Circles to be a “personal favorite” of Jawaharlal Nehru since his junior officer days. He reportedly received a number of undue professional favors throughout his career due to this personal connection and he made full use of this opportunity with utter disregard to the Army organisation”.

To end, as Brig Brig John Dalvi writes, “A Chief must act fearlessly both in peace and war, especially if he is being hustled into a military course which he feels may land the nation in disaster. To put it mildly, Gen. Thapar’s tenure was notable only for his conformity with the prevailing mood of Government. He foresaw the impending doom but was too helpless to influence events. The Nehru-Menon-Thimayya episode of 1959 had far-reach effects on the authority and role of the Service Chief”.

The Thapar Family

It all starts with his father, Dewan Bahadur Kunj Behari Thapar of Lahore who had made his fortune during the First World War as a commission agent for the colonial British Indian Army. However, the loyalty of Dewan Bahadur Kunj Behari Thapar was tested on April 13, 1919, after the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre.

Such was his loyalty, on the same evening after the massacre and as a member of the Golden Temple management (the predecessor of the SGPC) Gen Reginald Dyer was presented Dyer with a Kirpan (sword) and a Siropa (turban) along with Rs. 1.75 Lakhs contributed by Kunj Bihari Thapar and others. (As per this report in India Today.)

For his loyalty, Kunj Behari Thapar was awarded the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 1920. (Copy of the Edinburgh Gazette).

As the family was rich, powerful, and influential, it is not beyond the realm of possibility one of his sons Pran Nath Thapar received an appointment at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, passing out on 4 February 1926 as a second lieutenant.

During the height of the 1962 war, the Indian Air Force wanted to bomb the Chinese army positions which according to many in the Air Force, Gen Thapar overruled as he had the support of Defence Minister VK Krishna Menon. Even today, India enjoys significant air superiority over Tibet against the Chinese air force.

Such decisions finally led to the routing of the Indian army that had fought valiantly. Thapar who had resigned in disgrace was later appointed as Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan from August 1964 to January 1969.

But for India, the family’s shadow post-independence was still long. His son is Indian journalist Karan Thapar and his niece is none other than Historian Romilla Thapar who was one of the key architects in undermining the findings of the Archaeological Survey of India in the Ayodhya Ram Temple case.

The Thapar family is mostly of the leftist ideology but has always lived life like a feudal lord.

Serial Fake News Peddler Of Alt News Nominated For “Freedom Of Expression” Awards

Mohammed Zubair belonging to the Islamist propaganda outlet Alt News has been nominated for the Index on Censorship’s Freedom of Expression Awards 2023.

According to the website of  Index on Censorship (IoC), the award is given to “the people carrying out courageous, high-impact and determined journalism that exposes censorship and threats to free expression.

The IoC goes on to describe Zubair saying that he and others “co-founded Alt-News a portal dedicated to busting fake news to address flaws in the Indian media ecosystem, such as overt political pressure on media outlets and opaque methods by which government funding was awarded to media outlets.

Alt News aims to foster a stronger and more vibrant media environment by amplifying dissenting voices and creating barriers to prevent mis/disinformation from spreading.“, the IOC description reads.

Furthermore, the IoC has significantly downplayed the sharing of a selectively edited video without context, portraying it as an act of ‘exposing.’ Furthermore, it praised the labeling of certain factual statements from Islamic scriptures as ‘blasphemy,’ equating it with a form of journalistic courage. This narrative overlooks the tragic fact that individuals were killed by extremists in response to these actions, putting Nupur Sharma’s life in jeopardy due to Zubair’s actions.

It is to be noted that it was after Mohammad Zubair tweeted a clip of Nupur Sharma’s remarks about Prophet Mohammad that the issue exploded.

Alt News and its co-founders have peddled fake-news many times.

You can read about the instances when Mohammed Zubair and his partner Pratik Sinha peddled fake news.

“Vera Maadhiri Poidum”: TNM Journo Shabbir Ahmed Hounds And Threatens TN BJP Leaders During Press Meet, Gets Schooled By Ponnar

In a recent meeting of Bharatiya Janata Party executives in Tamil Nadu, the party’s senior leader, Pon Radhakrishnan, emphasised that the primary agenda was to bolster the BJP’s presence in the state rather than discussing the AIADMK alliance. The gathering, which took place at a private venue in Chennai, was attended by prominent figures including State President Annamalai, senior leader H. Raja, Coimbatore South BJP MLA and BJP National Women’s Wing President Vanathi Srinivasan, and others.

Radhakrishnan stated, “BJP aims to make significant strides in Tamil Nadu, and the party is dedicated to securing Narendra Modi’s third term as Prime Minister. The meeting outlined guidelines and tasks for the next seven months leading up to the parliamentary elections. The upcoming elections will be conducted based on these directives, urging BJP members to work with unwavering commitment and diligence.”

Responding to queries about the AIADMK alliance, Radhakrishnan clarified, “No discussions were held regarding the AIADMK alliance. Instead, the focus was on fortifying the BJP and advancing the existing National Democratic Alliance. The meeting revolved around strategies to propel this alliance forward.”

Addressing the delay in the BJP’s decision regarding the AIADMK alliance, Radhakrishnan remarked, “The BJP is gearing up for the 2024 parliamentary elections, preceded by five state elections. The party is prioritising these state-level contests.”

When questioned about Tamil Nadu BJP chief Annamalai’s recent remarks about Annadurai, Radhakrishnan urged for respect towards all former Chief Ministers of Tamil Nadu, acknowledging their contributions to the state. He also said, “There have been many instances of criticism of Anna’s remarks concerning the same incident. Now we know those were not true. With regard to the issue you are talking about, Annamalai has already clarified his stand, I do not need to give my comments on the issue. He also did not criticise, he just narrated an incident that happened. We all respect Anna as the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, we also respect all the Chief Ministers of the state.”

The “issue” of Annamalai’s interaction with a lady reporter at a press meeting was also brought up. Shabbir Ahmed from Dravidianist-Leftist outlet The News Minute raised concerns about Annamalai’s “demeanour” towards reporters. Shabbir said there were allegations of Annamalai behaving very disrespectfully with her and that he was continuously treating reporters vehemently and that his behaviour was very insulting. He asked whether Pon Radhakrishnan would offer him any advice on his behaviour towards journalists since he was a senior member of the party. Pon Radhakrishnan replied saying, “All that I am requesting you is to give the respect to our State President and I humbly request you to ask him the questions properly.”

Shabbir retorted saying, “We have never asked questions violating any norms when the State President speaks, other leaders have never spoken like he has. Especially with Annamalai, he insults the journalists when they ask questions.”

Pon Radhakrishnan replied saying, “Now you are asking a question, the others are silent and when another asked a question, the rest of you were silent. Why are you not following this with him? Don’t the journalists have their own dharma/duty? I am not finding fault with you. What I am asking you is, to give the same respect and treat the State President of Tamil Nadu BJP the same way as you would do with the other political party heads in the state”. H. Raja echoed similar sentiments, advising journalists to address Annamalai with due respect.

Shabbir continued by saying, “When a reporter asks a question, even if the question is a tough one, it is not right as a leader to single out that reporter, right?” Radhakrishnan said that he had already addressed this and that it was not the right thing for him to speak about it again.

Shabbir again kept prodding, “No all we are asking is whether you will give them advice or not, we are placing our concerns before you, you decide.”

Another journalist quipped, “This isn’t the first time this is happening, we are placing our concerns only because this is happening repeatedly.”

Pon Radhakrishnan replies saying, “I had placed a request with you, if you follow it, everything will be alright.”

However, Shabbir continued to hound Radhakrishnan. He said, “With respect to a journalist, it is natural to ask questions.“, to which Radhakrishnan replied in the affirmative. Shabbir then goes on to say, “But at the same time, the reaction coming from the other side is severe and we are registering it because if it continues, it will take a different turn (vera maadhiri poidum)”

When a journalist accused Annamalai of attending the meeting but not giving a press meet, H Raja interrupted him and said, “I don’t approve of this. You should not say he doesn’t “know” to come to a press meet. Even in Delhi, press meets are conducted, does the President attend all the meetings and answer the questions? It is the spokesperson who does it. Each party has its rules and methods. So don’t speak derogatorily about the State President, such remarks create an ill-will. So please avoid such questions.

Another journalist butted in, but H Raja shut him up (despite Shabbir indicating that he was a senior journalist) saying, “I don’t know which magazine or newspaper you represent, but saying ‘State President doesn’t know to attend the press meet’ is wrong and should not be used.

Not The First Time Shabbir Hounded BJP Leaders

This is not the first time Shabbir has behaved in this manner. When Annamalai met presspersons in 2022, Shabbir Ahmed unleashed his thug avatar.

On October 27, 2022, Annamalai, while addressing a protest meeting against the DMK government in Cuddalore, found himself surrounded by a swarm of media reporters. Their inquiries centered on the Coimbatore car explosion, to which Annamalai responded with a question about the overwhelming presence of reporters, igniting a controversy that was seized upon by DMK and Dravidian Stockist journalists in Tamil Nadu.

At a subsequent press conference on October 31, 2022, Shabbir Ahmed of The News Minute (TNM) and Lakshmi Subramanian of The Week confronted Annamalai, demanding an apology. Annamalai clarified that he had not referred to reporters as monkeys but had questioned why they were encircling him without allowing him the space and time to address their inquiries. He also highlighted the inconsistency in the response from Dravidian Stockist journalists, pointing out the muted criticism when DMK leader RS Bharathi referred to the media as “red light media.”

Annamalai countered Shabbir’s inquiries by raising questions about the neutrality of certain TV channels, specifically Sun TV and Kalaignar TV. He also revealed the political affiliation of a reporter from Sun News who supports the DMK. Annamalai criticized those who he believed were propagating agendas under the guise of journalism while commending the majority of media professionals for their commitment to truthful and honest reporting.

In the video that went viral on social media, TNM’s Shabbir Ahmed can be seen standing with one leg raised coming across as disrespectful. Many on social media lashed out at Shabbir asking if he can carry the same body language in front of DMK leaders. A few also recalled the instance when Shabbir was attacked by DMK cadres in 2014.

Rajini Pens Tribute To Karunanidhi In DMK Mouthpiece Which Earlier Ridiculed Him, Regrets For Not Having Acted Mouthing His Lines

Superstar Rajinikanth, who has been in the spotlight for his on-again-off-again entry into politics, penned an emotional article in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) mouthpiece ‘Murasoli‘ to honor the late Chief Minister and DMK patriarch, Kalaignar MK Karunanidhi, as part of the ongoing centenary celebrations. The article, titled ‘I had a special place in Kalaignar’s heart‘ provided a glimpse into Rajinikanth’s relationship with the former DMK chief and wrote about their key interactions.

Rajinikanth expressed deep admiration for Karunanidhi’s role in propelling legendary Tamil actors MG Ramachandran (MGR) and Sivaji Ganesan to stardom. He described how Karunanidhi’s fiery and revolutionary dialogues turned these actors into superheroes of the Tamil film industry.

In the article, Rajinikanth recalled an incident from 1980 when he was set to act in a film for which Karunanidhi had agreed to write the dialogues. Initially, he was apprehensive about speaking Karunanidhi’s dialogues, fearing his own limitations in mastering Tamil verses. He even recalled how he contemplated returning to his previous job as a bus conductor in Karnataka. “I was already struggling to speak simple Tamil verses and act. I told the producer that it was impossible; I might run away to Karnataka and restart my bus conductor work selling tickets again rather than act for his dialogues”, he wrote.

However, he decided to meet Karunanidhi in person at his Gopalapuram residence to discuss his concerns. “I am struggling to speak simple Tamil. How can I speak your verses when that is the case? I can’t. Don’t get it wrong,” Rajinikanth apparently told Karunanidhi to which the latter had replied saying “I know exactly how to write for you. I will not write to MGR as I write to Shivaji… Similarly I will not write to Shivaji as I write to MGR. I have seen your films. I will write for your style.

Suddenly an idea seems to have struck Rajini and he said “Sir, we will change some lines and delete some lines. In that case, your verses cannot be edited or deleted. It will not be right either.” to which Karunanidhi said, “Change it.. There is nothing wrong. Is it Thirukkural to not be changed?

Rajinikanth was caught unawares and explains in the article saying “All my smartness turned to ashes in an instant. I was silent without understanding anything.”

Noticing this, Kalaignar smiled and said, ‘Let whoever wrote the verses before write it… I won’t take it wrong… Don’t worry…’ and told his assistant to call the producer.“, Rajini narrates in the Murasoli article.

Karunanidhi apparently told the producer, “It will be difficult for him to speak my lines. I said I will write in his style. He also agreed. But Rajini says that the shooting is on the 10th of this month… I was thinking next month… Time is very tight. I already have a lot of work lined up. So I can’t write dialogues for this film. We will see about this for the next film.”

What Rajini? Are you satisfied now?” Karuananidhi asked Rajini, the latter says in the article.

Rajinikanth appreciated Karunanidhi handling the situation diplomatically and goes on to regret “Should I’ve acted mouthing his lines? Did I commit a mistake? A feeling of guilt is still present in me.

Rajinikanth also reminisced about his first encounter with Karunanidhi in 1977 when the latter’s car approached him on Music Academy road in Chennai. Karunanidhi’s warm smile and wave at him during that encounter left an indelible mark on Rajinikanth it seems.

The article not only reflected Rajinikanth’s admiration for Karunanidhi but also highlighted the important role the late leader played in shaping the careers of iconic actors and his influence on the Tamil film industry.

It’s worth noting that Rajinikanth has been oscillating between entering the political arena and stepping back, citing health concerns. While he had initially announced his intention to launch a political party, he later backtracked, citing his health condition as the reason. However, political observers continue to speculate about his potential political foray.

Rajinikanth recently acted in the film ‘Jailer’ which was produced by Kalanithi Maran, the brother of DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran.  gifted the actor a brand new BMW X7, valued at approximately ₹1.25 crores. Apart from this, Maran, as the owner of Sun Pictures, which has produced the film, presented the actor with a cheque rumoured to be for ₹100 crores. This meeting took place on the evening of 31 August 2023.

Sun Pictures is also producing the tentatively titled “Thalaivar 171” which is being directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj of Vikram fame.

In the midst of this, Rajinikanth’s tribute to Karunanidhi in ‘Murasoli,’ a newspaper that had previously published critical articles about him, shows that Rajinikanth has come a full circle.

In 2018, Murasoli published a satirical article titled “He is the black sheep meh meh meh,” which alluded to a famous dialogue from Rajinikanth’s Endhiran movie, criticised him for not acknowledging the dedicated efforts of his fans over the years.

Reports suggest that a displeased Rajinikanth reportedly had a conversation with DMK leader MK Stalin, following which an ‘advisory’ was published in the Murasoli newspaper. This advisory featured a brief statement issued by Murasoli’s editor, S. Selvam, without providing specific details about who was offended or why. The newspaper did not issue a formal apology.

Another article published earlier in October that year accused Rajinikanth of being influenced by certain individuals and receiving support from “communal” elements. This article was presented in a question-and-answer format under the pseudonym “Silanthi” (meaning ‘spider’ in Tamil). It suggested that those advocating for Rajinikanth in the media were divisive elements seeking to disrupt Tamil society, which had transcended caste and religion. The article cautioned Rajinikanth to be cautious, warning that those aligning with this group would lose their appeal.

After receiving such backlash from the DMK mouthpiece, it is ironic that Rajinikanth chose to write in the same magazine about Karunanidhi. It is worth noting that after the success of his film Jailer, Sun Pictures’ Kalanidhi Maran presented him with a cheque and also gifted him a BMW X7.

I.N.D.I. Ally VCK MP Thirumavalavan Insults Saivite Text Periyapuranam While Criticizing TN Guv Ravi For Attending Poonool Ceremony Of Nandanars

In a significant cultural and social event, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi attended the Nandanar Guru Puja ceremony held in Ma. Adanur village, Kattumannarkovil circle, Cuddalore district. The ceremony, organised by Tamil Seva Sangam, honoured Nandanar, also known as Thirunalaipovar Nayanmar. The Nandanar Guru Puja is a form of worship steeped in Puranic traditions.

One of the significant highlights of the event was Governor RN Ravi presiding over a ceremony in which over 100 people, all hailing from Adi Dravidar communities were bestowed with the sacred thread known as ‘poonool’ or ‘janeu,’ which is traditionally worn by Brahmins and many other communities. This symbolic gesture aimed to promote inclusivity and equality.

Addressing the gathering at the Upanayanam and Nandanar Guru Puja ceremony, Governor RN Ravi expressed concern over the rising incidents of caste-based violence in Tamil Nadu, even involving school students. He noted the divisive politics based on caste and religion in the state and urged unity among the people for a brighter future.

Governor Ravi also drew attention to the alarming increase in rape cases and the low conviction rates, emphasizing the need for a more robust legal system to address such crimes. He highlighted instances of contaminated water supply to Dalit communities at Vengaivayal and incidents of violence, such as the recent attack on a 12-year-old SC schoolboy by upper-caste students in Nanguneri.

The event was attended by prominent figures, including Sridhar Vembu, the founder and chairman of Zoho Corporation, and SP Gnana Saravanavel, the founder and trustee of Tamil Seva Sangam.

The Nandanar Guru Puja ceremony was held in Ma. Adanur village, the birthplace of Nandanar, near Kattumannarkoil in Cuddalore district, was a testament to the rich cultural heritage and commitment to social justice in the region. With the participation of Governor RN Ravi and the symbolic act of bestowing the ‘poonool’ on non-upper-caste individuals, the event conveyed a powerful message of unity, equality, and inclusivity.

VCK MP Thirumavalavan Insults Periyapuranam And Hinduism

While the sacred thread ceremony was organized as a mark of inclusivity, I.N.D.I Ally VCK MP took the opportunity to go on a tirade against Hinduism.

Hitting out at Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi for presiding over the function in which Nandanar community were adorned the poonool, Thirumavalavan said that the act amounted to denigration the working class people in the name of upliftment.

This is what is Sanathanam“, he said condemning the Hindu faith.

Does the governor say that others who do not wear poonul are inferior? Will the Governor make the Adi Dravidians who are dressed in Poonul as temple priests?“, he added.

Let us reject the Periya Puranam which denigrates the king Nandan, as a cow-eating Pulayan“, Thirumavalavan said.

Who Is Nandan And What Is Periya Puranam?

Nandanar, also known as Thirunaallaippovaar, was a revered Nayanar saint within the Shaivism sect of Hinduism. He holds a unique place among the Nayanars as the only Paraiyar saint and is typically listed as the eighteenth among the 63 Nayanars. Much like his fellow Nayanars, Nandanar was a devout devotee of Lord Shiva.

The Periya Puranam, a 12th-century Tamil epic compiled by Sekkizhar, chronicles the lives of the sixty-three Nayanars (Tamil Shaivite poets) and is a revered Hindu text.

The story of Nandanar has been retold through various mediums in Tamil culture, including folk tales, folk music, plays, films, and literature. Although Nandanar’s inclusion in the Nayanar list dates back to the 8th century CE, the Periya Puranam provides a comprehensive hagiographical account of his life.

The narrative revolves around two miraculous events associated with him: one involving the movement of a massive stone bull in the Sivalokanathar Temple in Tirupunkur, which remains in its shifted position, and the other depicting Nandanar’s ritual purification by fire at the Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram. These tales continue to be an integral part of the lore and religious literature of both temples.

Nandanar In Periya Puranam

The Periya Puranam recounts the humble origins of Nandanar, who hailed from Adhanur in the Chola kingdom. He was born into the Pulaiya caste, considered “untouchables” or Dalits, known for their occupation as agricultural laborers and musicians, particularly drummers. Nandanar’s deep devotion was directed towards Lord Shiva, the patron deity of Shaivism.

Despite his impoverished background, Nandanar was a skilled leather craftsman, specializing in the creation of drums and musical instruments. He also fulfilled various roles in his village, such as a watchman and town crier, using his drumming skills for communication. During Nandanar’s era, Dalits were barred from entering Hindu temples. Thus, he would stand outside Shiva temples, singing praises and dancing in reverence to Shiva.

However, his heart’s desire was to behold the sacred icon of Shiva at the Sivalokanathar Temple in Tirupunkur. This temple visit was hindered by a massive stone Nandi, the sacred bull of Shiva, which obstructed his view. In response to Nandanar’s devotion, Lord Shiva, in his compassion, ordered Nandi to shift aside, granting Nandanar an unobstructed view of Shiva’s central icon. In gratitude, Nandanar cleaned the temple surroundings, excavated a pond (now the temple tank), circumambulated the shrine, and eventually returned to Adanur.

Nandanar’s spiritual journey led him to visit various Shiva temples, where he served the deity diligently. His longing to visit the Thillai Nataraja Temple in Chidambaram, dedicated to Shiva as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, was unwavering. He would declare his intention to visit Chidambaram daily but hesitated to enter the holy town due to the prohibition against his entry. Thus, he earned the moniker “Tiru-Nalai-povar,” meaning ‘he who will go tomorrow.’

In a significant turn of events, Nandanar reached the outskirts of Chidambaram but hesitated to step inside. Exhausted, he circled the town multiple times and eventually fell asleep. In his dream, Shiva instructed Nandanar to enter the temple through a sacred fire. Simultaneously, the deity informed the Brahmin priests of Chidambaram to prepare a pyre. Following the divine command, the Brahmins approached Nandanar the next day.

Nandanar, chanting Shiva’s name, walked into the holy fire, emerging transformed. He appeared as a Brahmin sage with matted hair, the sacred thread across his chest, and sacred ash adorning his body. Alongside the Brahmins, Nandanar entered the inner sanctum of the temple, beholding Nataraja.
