Kalakshetra Alumnus Questions TN Women Commission Head’s Motives, Points Out Inconsistencies In Her ‘Galatta’ Interview

In the past few weeks, Kalakshetra Foundation has been at the centre of a controversy after a social media campaign resulted in students protesting against the institution’s management over allegations of sexual harassment

Hari Padman, a Kalakshetra alumnus and teacher at the institute since 2002, was arrested on 3 April 2023, on charges of alleged sexual harassment and criminal intimidation.

The Kalakshetra Foundation’s board of directors has formed an independent inquiry committee to look into allegations of sexual harassment leveled against several teachers. In addition to suspending Padman pending the outcome of the investigation, the board had also terminated the services of three other teaching faculty members: Sanjith Lal, Sai Krishnan, and Sreenath.

Despite the action taken, leftist and Dravidian Stockist media outlet The News Minute has been going on a tirade against Kalakshetra Foundation accusing the institution of trying to silence voices and shielding the accused. The outlet has been peddling one particular side of the story while knowingly/unknowingly not bringing out the other side of the story.

AS Kumari, the head of Tamil Nadu State Women’s Commission had given an interview to a YouTube channel in which she alleges that she got more than 100 complaints of sexual harassment, casteism etc.

In the interview to ‘Galatta’ YouTube channel, another Dravidian Sotkcist media outlet, AS Kumari says that 10-12 girls and 2-3 boys had met her and shared the complaints. Apparently, all kinds of harassment – emotional, physical, sexual, mental -have been happening in the campus since 2008 she says.

However, a Bharatnatyam dancer named Iris Salman (Twitter handle – @iris_debieve) says why such a high profile case report has not been worded yet and put in public domain.

It is to be noted that Haripadman is under judicial custody with the Saidapet magistrate court dismissing the bail application.

“Why Madam did not approach ‘accused’ and tell them about charges, Is it not their constitutional right?”, Iris Salman questioned the state women’s commission head.

A video released by YouTuber Maridhas has an audio clip in which two girl students (a Marathi and a Malayali) discuss with Hari Padman. This audio clip reveals that some of the allegations against him hold no water.

Pointing out this video and a News 18 article, Iris Salman states that there is clear evidence that two points in FIR are false. “Why madam has concluded so fast?”, Iris asked questioning the AS Kumari’s intent.

When the interviewer asks AS Kumari whether she saw any proof of Hari Padman ‘torturing’ his students through WhatsApp, she claims that 2 students showed their WhatsApp in which she allegedly saw Hari Padman having deleted messages from his end. She also says that the students had replied to a few messages of his messages as ‘ok sir’, ‘no sir’, ‘sir’.

“Two alumni complained of inappropriate WhatsApp voice messages which they say Haripadman sir had deleted. ‘Delete for everyone’ can be done within 24hrs of sending only. Even based on deleted messages how did you CONCLUDE he is guilty when u say responses were only ok, yes, no?”, the Kalakshetra Alumnus asked the state women’s commission head.

Advocate Ajeetha who was quit as the external member of the Internal Committee (IC) at the Kalakshetra Foundation said in an interview to another Dravdian propagandist channel Nakkheeran that 3-4 cases were handled, disposed, action was taken against culprits who left campus.

Citing this statement of Ajeetha, Iris Salman questioned AS Kumari saying “So how are you confident Kalakshetra did not take action from ICC or that students lived in fear? Did you speak to Ajeetha ma’am?”

In the Galatta interview, AS Kumari also says that there are other ‘serious’ cases but she cannot talk about them due to confidentiality rules.

“Then how come you can talk about these cases alone? What is the criteria?”, Iris Salman asked AS Kumari.

“In the case of the boys, complaints came only in late March and Prevention of Sexual Harassment Committee is gender specific. Complainants were advised to go to police .The case of complainant who lodged FIR does not fall under POSH, and complainant was advised to go to police. Why Madam does not mention this?”

In the interview, AS Kumari also expresses admiration for teachers Nirmala, Nandhini, Indu. However, insiders from Kalakshetra who do not find themselves quoted in the mainstream media, say that this entire episode has been because of three teachers namely – Nirmala Nagarajan, Nandini Nagarajan and Indhu Nideesh – who harbour professional rivalry against Haripadman. A majority of the students who are aware of the drama have refused to come out and have chosen to remain silent fearing reprisal from the other side.

One of the student accused Nirmala of humiliating a student and a teacher during POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) conference led by lawyer BS Ajeetha in January.

Nirmala Nagarajan, Nandini Nagarajan, Indu Nideesh, and Rekha Menon have been accused by a few students of spreading rumours and gossips about people they don’t like.

Nirmala and Indu have allegedly been circulating rumours against Haripadman with a promise of removing probation concept if they protest against him.

Some of the students have written to the Ministry of Culture under which Kalakshetra comes, to order an investigation into the activities of Nirmala teacher, Nandini teacher and Indhu teacher.

Now Iris Salman has questioned AS Kumari hailing Nirmala et al sayiang “.. you speak in glowing support of teachers Nirmala, Nandhini, Indu. If these teachers are so concerned to support students and harassment is ongoing from 2008, why did they not speak up before? Why did Nirmala give major role to Haripadman in her production in March 2022?”

A Russian alumna of the college had earlier sent a complaint to the state women’s commission alleging harassment by a teacher. The faculty in question allegedly harassed her and even told her that her effort and expenditure on learning dance would go in vain if she did not ‘adjust’.

Iris Salman has questioned why AS Kumari has not mentioned about this incident where the alleged molester is still inside the campus.

“Why madam did not mention this? Why the three teachers are not concerned about him (Hari Padman) when accusation is much more serious than current FIR? Why students are not concerned?”, Iris Salman raised.

“Madam says students cannot be manipulated. In 2012, entire student body was arm twisted through speeches/tears to sign a document to oust Leela Samson by same female teachers; how madam knows if all students are willing protest participants? Why have u concluded guilt so quickly?”, she questioned.

He elaborated on the Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) initiative, wherein the Armed Forces, Defence Public Sector Undertakings, Indian Coast Guard and Paramilitary forces seek solutions to their problem statements from the general public.

“There are two ways to resolve a problem statement. One is to issue a tender and get it resolved through a foreign company. The other is to put forth the problem statement before the young, ignited minds, which is 65% of the country’s population. This is the vision behind iDEX. In just five years since its launch, we have received an encouraging response. We have already launched nine Defence India Start-up Challenges. Youths have provided solutions to many problem statements. We not only adopt the ideas of the youth but take it forward by connecting them with investors and providing grants,” Shri Rajnath Singh said.

The Defence Minister also enumerated the initiatives taken to promote entrepreneurial mindset among the youth. He stated that a culture of venture capital funding has been developed for start-ups, which is important for their hand-holding at an early stage. “The number of unicorns in the country has crossed 100 from just four or five eight-nine years. These values will make the surging ahead India complete, he said.

Shri Rajnath Singh also underscored the importance of a strong will to achieve any given task, stressing that both successes and failures are part of life, and one should not get swayed away by the ups and downs. Referring to the news reports of suicides by IIT & NEET aspirants in Kota, he called upon the students to remember that no goal or dream is bigger than life. He termed it as the collective failure of society if any child takes such a drastic step. He urged all parents, relatives, teachers and friends to never judge children on the basis of their exam results but assess them on their hard work.

The Defence Minister lauded the Vidyapeeth for contributing in the all-round progress of the nation by implementing various plans in the fields of education, literature, culture and history, besides adopting latest technologies in line with the changing times. He also unveiled the statue of renowned Rajput warrior and King of Mewar Maharana Pratap on the University premises. DMK MP A Raja Spews Casteist Abuse On UP CM Yogi, Calls PM Modi A ‘Fraud’ And Jaya A ‘Kollaikaari’, D Stock Media Keeps Mouth Shut

DMK MP A. Raja, a habitual Hindu-baiter (particularly Brahmins), who is known for his foul-mouthed speeches and below the belt remarks has once again unleashed venom against his political and ideological opponents.

A Raja who spoke at an event honouring MK Stalin and TR Balu, insulted Hinduism, Brahmins, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and deceased AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa.

DMK MP A Raja said, “350 BJP MPs in Parliament were wearing saffron shawls and screaming ‘Modi.. Modi..Modi… However, when we 39 DMK MPs entered the parliament wearing black shirts, they became silent. It is we who have the courage to yell “Modi down and Adani down” in Parliament. You should have seen Modi’s expression back then. Delhi (BJP) is terrified of what TR Baalu will ask in parliament.”

Taking a dig at the position of Congress in the current political scenario, A Raja said that it is DMK which decides what Congress has to do in the PParliament. “I am not underestimating anyone,” A Raja said mocking Congress. He went on to say that the entire North Indian leaders are asking DMK leader MK Stalin to lead them because they have no one else to turn to.

He added that statues were erected for Vallabhai Patel because, while serving on constitutional sub-committees on Minorities and Scheduled Castes, he opposed reservations for Christians, Muslims, and Scheduled Castes, and that it was only because of Ambedkar that the reservation was restored.

He also went on to hail TR Baalu saying “We did not witness the freedom struggle and only read about it in books. However, our leader, TR Baalu, was imprisoned during what is known as the second freedom struggle, the Emergency declared by Indhira Gandhi. We cannot rewrite history as we are currently in alliance with Congress.”

According to A Raja, people are using a new technique to determine the caste of others even while travelling in public bus. “They use the elimation method to determine caste. They begin by asking if you are related to Tambaram Raja. If we say no, they will conclude that we do not belong to the Reddy caste. They will eliminate the Thevar caste if we say we don’t know TR Baalu,” he explained.

This is a self-serving goal by A Raja, as his claim that people are using new techniques to find caste contradicts the DMK and its leaders’ claim that Periyar, the Dravidar Kazhagam leader, has eliminated caste in Tamil Nadu. Quoting Ambedkar, he said that the caste in inculcated in their (casteist) mind. A Raja who claims that casteists are inventing new ways to determine caste should be shown a video of MK Stalin in which he determined the caste of an old man to be ‘Gowda’ as soon as he stated that he was from Hosur.

https://twitter.com/sinam_anger/status/1210014958416580608

He added, “Except for DMK Chief Minister MK Stalin, no Chief Ministers such as Mamta Banneerjee, Jagan Mohan Reddy, KCR, or Naveen Patnaik have suffered in jail during the Emergency. TR Baalu and I started from the grass root level and have worked our way up to a good position in the party. This does not occur in any other party. For example, Edappadi Palaniswami became Chief Minister after falling at Sasikala’s feet. People fall at God’s feet but nothing happens, but falling at Sasikala’s feet results in Edappadi becoming Chief Minister. MK Stalin rose through the ranks of the party and the government from the ground up.”

A Raja stated that he began as a union level party official and has now risen through the ranks to become deputy general secretary. He claimed that the same was true of MK Stalin, who rose to become the leader of the party. He should be joking when he claims that cadres in the DMK party rise through hard work and there is no nepotism. MK Stalin, a product of nepotism himself, has promoted his son to Minister of Sports and is now grooming him for a future Chief Ministerial berth. Belonging to such a party and accusing others of nepotism reveals the extent to which cognition has taken a backseat.

A Raja should remember that MK Stalin rose through the ranks not because he was arrested during the Emergency, but because he is the son of M Karunanidhi, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, political critics continue to question whether MK Stalin was arrested under MISA or during MISA, as MK Stalin or the DMK has not produced the detention copy or any other proof of MK Stalin being arrested under MISA.

He said, “People have asked us why we are spending ₹80 crore on a pen statue for Karunanidhi. It is this pen that gave free electricity to agricultural motors of Edappadi Palaniswami and Kongu Vellaala Gounder community, a developed community with land holdings.”

It is clearly an attempt of A Raja to appease the Kongu Vellalar community, to which EPS belongs, after earning the community’s wrath during the 2021 election campaign by calling EPS an illegitimate child. Also will A Raja dare to remove the Kongu Vellalar community from the backward class and give that reservation to a real disadvantageous community, as he himself claimed that Kongu Vellalar community is more developed?

“It is this pen that gave equal rights in properties for women,” A Raja said. But he scored another self-goal by claiming that he has no idea whether the law is being followed correctly. A Raja said, “When then PM Nehru attempted to support Ambedkar’s bill to give equal rights to women in properties, Maha Periyavaal (with a sly jibe against Brahmins) from Tamil Nadu warned that if women were given property rights, they would engage in extramarital affairs and elope with other men after marriage. Maha Periyava said that equal rights to woman is against Hindu Dharma.” A Raja attempted to mock Brahmins by speaking in their slang.

A Raja also stated that the judiciary throughout India, including Tamil Nadu, is being saffronized, with an indirect reference to Justice GR Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. However, A Raja has no objections to DMK and Left leaders becoming High Court and Supreme Court judges. Before becoming a judge, several High Court judges were office bearers of parties other than the BJP. A Raja who seemed unconcerned about this, have concerns about Saffronization of Judiciary.

A Raja also accused Hinduism and Brahmins of imposing the “Kutraparamparai” (Criminal Tribes) Act on several castes in South India. However, A Raja should be reminded that it was the British who enacted the law requiring people of a certain caste to sign in at the police station. A Raja purposefully blamed Hindu religion and Brahmins for the British act.

A Raja spoke the truth in a flow, saying that four government doctors in his family did not report for duty during the COVID period, and when he asked why, they said they were not concerned about peoples lives and wanted to save their lives.

Abusing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, A Raja called him a “Pandaram, Paradesi”.

“Do you know how many people are Below Poverty Line, in Uttar Pradesh, where you’ve built a temple for Ramar? You’ve built a Ram Temple there. A ‘Pandaaram’, ‘Paradesi’ is a Chief Minsiter there.”, the DMK leader abused the UP CM.

Pandaaram is a most backward community (MBC) in Tamil Nadu whose members were once priests of non-Agama temples. However, the term has over the years become a slur.

Paradesi literally means a person from another country but it has also become a slur.

“Uttar Pradesh, where you’ve a ‘Pandaram’, ‘Paradesi’ as a Chief Minister and a Ram temple built, the number of people below poverty line is 27%.”, he said.

He also insulted former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa by asking the AIADMK leaders if they would describe Jayalalithaa as a “Kollaikaari” (robber) in her tombstone.

“If we shouldn’t spend 80 crore for this pen statue, you’ve kept a memorial for your aatha (colloquial way of referring one’s mother) for your ngomma (colloquial but an abusive way to refer to one’s mother). Whose money is that? That too is around 60 crore or 70 crore. What did she sign? What are her achievements?”, he said.

Citing the Supreme Court, he said that Jayalalithaa is a woman robber who murdered the Constitution.

“If you’re opposing the pen statue for a person who has signed for so many things, you’ve kept a memorial for your ngomma. If you have the honesty and guts, what should you write? Write the Supreme Court judgement. Write ‘Our Amma, the robber who murdered the Constitution is resting here’.”, A Raja said.

Speaking about the Adani issue, Raja said “Can the Prime Minister tell this – ‘There are allegations on Adani. It was said by an American firm. We’re investigating. We’re forming a committee to investigate. In that, Raja will be there, or Baalu will be there. Someone from DMK be there. I am not afraid. I am not a thief. I don’t have anything to hide. Let’s make the Parliament work.’ – do you hav the guts to say this? Do you know what the Hindenberg report says? Stock manipulation and accounting fraud. What Adani did was stock manipulation where you artificially manipulate stock prices to go up. Accounting fraud means there is fraud in balance sheet. Who took Adani? Who went together in the same flight having meals?”

Calling Prime Minister Modi a fraud, Raja said “If Adani is a fraud, then you, who took him everywhere and now remaining mute, are also a fraud. I challenge. If I say this, they are putting case against me. Put me behind bars now. I am brother of Kalaignar and Stalin.”

This abusive speech was made by the DMK MP a week ago at Tambaram at a public meeting organized by Perungalathur North DMK unit to commemorate Stalin’s 70th birthday. DMK MP TR Baalu was also on stage enjoying Raja’s speech.

While the video of his problematic speech is present in DMK-friendly YouTube channels, it has barely made news with none of the mainstream Dravidian Stockist media questioning the unparliamentary language of the DMK MP. Only senior Tamil journalist Rangaraj Pandey on his YouTube channel Chanakyaa has spoken about the matter.

It is noteworthy to mention that DMK MP A Raja’s comments on CM Yogi Adityanath has the potential to invite a defamation suit similar to Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Modi Surname’ case.

“No Force On Earth Can Stop An Idea Whose Time Has Come”: Annamalai’s Msg For His Padayatra

On the auspicious occassion of Tamil New Year, BJP Tamil Nadu President K. Annamalai made an announcement about his much awaited Padayatra.

The padayatra will commence on his birthday (4 June 2023) and the state leadership will try to cover all the Parliamentary consituencies of Tamil Nadu in the lead up to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

A dedicated website has also been launched for the Padayatra where people can register to walk with Annamalai.

In a foreword about his Padayatra, Annamalai has written that the governance of the Tamil Nadu has been marred by corruption everyday and in every space and that he wishes to reclaim Tamil Nadu’s lost glory through his padayatra.

Here’s the full text of Annamalai’s message:

No force on earth can stop an idea whose time has come.

“What resource does my motherland not have?” This famous line has been an inspiration for our Prime Minister Thiru. Narendra Modi avargal to put India on the path of self-reliance by empowering every citizen.

The BJP under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi has been governing this country for close to a decade without a single instance of corruption. Development through empowerment has been the mantra. Empowerment of farmers, empowerment of women, empowerment of youth, empowerment of fishermen, empowerment of the marginalized, empowerment of entrepreneurs, basically, empowerment of every Indian is at the core of every scheme, every policy and every thought process of the Modi government.

Because of PM Modi’s various initiatives, India has made huge strides and has emerged as a world power today that other nations look up to. Every day is a history-in-making in India’s growth story.

But India’s story is incomplete without Tamil Nadu.

Unfortunately, Tamil Nadu today is under the grip of one party that is more concerned about the welfare of one family than the welfare of the Tamil people. There is a Chief Minister who is more interested in doing PR stunts than solving people’s problems. His entire coterie of Ministers have been singing paeans to the next dynast in line while abusing people day in and day out in the name of caste and religion. An entire lot of MPs are proving to be a deadweight in the Parliament. The subsequent rung of leaders have been having a field day taking the common Tamil people for granted. In short, instead of eliminating people’s woes, they themselves have become a woe for the Tamil people.

Law & Order is in shambles. Goons are roaming around the streets with sickles in their hands, while critics who criticize his “highness” are put behind bars. Custodial deaths have become frequent. Crime against women have been on the rise. Ganja and other drugs are flooding the streets. Lands are being encroached. Businesses are being attacked.

The economy is in tatters. The state’s economy basically runs on liquor at the cost of people’s lives. Investors are pulling out due to rampant corruption. Businesses prefer Bengaluru and Hyderabad over Chennai due to a hostile business climate. Infrastructure development is being blocked by naxal elements who were nurtured by those in power today.

Human capital is being institutionally weakened. Half of our children can’t even read Tamil and do basic arithmetic. Engineers graduating from colleges run by politicians have no jobs. Exams for state government jobs are marred by irregularities. In essence, the state’s manpower is being wasted.

A party that prides itself on social justice has been at the forefront of meteing out injustice to the marginalized people. Tamil Nadu has the maximum number of villages practicing untouchability. Marginalized people are put through inexplicable misery with sometimes faeces being found in their drinking water.

Corruption has become the order of the day. To get a community certificate, you’ve to bribe. To get a water connection, you’ve to bribe. To get an electricity connection, you’ve to bribe. To get a driving license, you’ve to bribe. To get your MNREGA wages, you’ve to bribe. To get your land registered, you’ve to bribe. In short, if you have to live in Tamil Nadu, you’ve to bribe.

But, I will not let my people languish in hopelessness forever. I will not let my Tamil people to come under the mercy of one family. I will not let my Tamil people to be taken for granted. I will not let my Tamil people fall prey to the nefarious politics that has plagued this state for long. I will not let my Tamil people to walk with their heads down in shame. The time has come for Tamil people to wake up from their slumber and walk with their head held high. The time has come for Tamil Nadu to walk on a new path.

And I am here to walk with you. Together, we will rise. Together, we will reclaim the lost glory of Tamil Nadu. Together, we will build a new future. Together, we will make Tamil Nadu great again!

This is not a journey. This is a mission. This is a mission for my land. This is a mission for my people.

We will meet very soon.

Yours truly,

Annamalai Kuppusamy

Jagan Reddy’s Double Trouble: The Airport Stabbing Case And Volunteer Scheme

Two recent news reports caught the attention of Andhra residents, both not given much space in the mainstream “national” English media – both are legal in nature, dealing with Court observations of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy.

One deals with his absence/refusal to make an appearance in court, regarding a case involving his claims of victimhood in a 2018 airport stabbing case in Vishakapatnam. The other, a Supreme Court comment on Jagan Reddy’s government allowance to government “volunteer” employees, for a monthly newspaper subscription, favoring his own newspaper, amounting to unfair/illegal state sponsorship of his private publication against all other local news publications.

These two legal matters coupled with the latest report on India’s wealthiest CMs with Jagan topping the list at self-declared assets worth a whopping ₹510 crores, has people questioning the AP Chief Minister’s sketchy past, his policies and tactics, amidst several complaints of financial irregularities, corruption and massive financial debts for the state, indicative of unhealthy spending and expenditure.

Add to this unsavory mix, the fact that Jagan is a Chief Minister with as many as 31 pending CBI cases against him including those of a criminal nature, it leaves one with feelings of discomfort and worry for the future of Andhra Pradesh.

1) The case of alleged victimhood in the Vishakapatnam airport stabbing: The 75-year-old mother of the accused man, J Srinivas Rao, had written to the former Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, about the plight of her son in jail, requesting that the case be either expedited for a declaration of the truth or that her son be granted bail.

The incident took place in 2018 when the previous TDP party was in power, before Jagan Reddy and his YSR Congress party (YSRCP) won the 2019 state elections. Jagan allegedly sustained a minor injury on his arm when Srinivas Rao, a contract worker at a canteen in the Vishakapatnam airport, raised a “Kodi Kathi” (small, sharp knife used in rooster fights) on him. At the time of the incident, Jagan cried foul and tried to implicate the TDP government in power, led by his arch political enemy, Chandrababu Naidu.

The TDP on its part denied any involvement in something as petty and shameful. The TDP claimed it was a cheap publicity gimmick by Jagan and his YSRCP party, intended to draw sympathy before the state’s 2019 elections. The incident did indeed bring Jagan, some sympathy from the public.

Some leaders speculated that Jagan, given the list of criminal cases against him, was capable of organizing such an incident himself, out of desperation for public attention and sympathy ahead of the elections. With the truth yet to be revealed, it does appear strange that Jagan has thus far, not made a court appearance, as requested by the NIA (National Investigation Agency), in his own defence.

Jagan’s odd behavior with regards to the incident and the court case, lends credence to the conspiracy theories of some Opposition lesders, that the incident may have been a self-organized one, intended for publicity and sympathy before the 2019 state elections. Will the truth be revealed in the near future? Will the accused, in jail for four years now, have a fair hearing without political intimidation? Incidentally, the NIA dismissed Jagan’s claims of political vendetta on the opposition.

2) Brazen alleged illegal attempt to promote own newspaper: An A.P government order (GO) sanctioned ₹200 per month from the State funds, as an added financial allowance to each government appointed village (gram) Volunteer/Ward Volunteer to enable them to purchase one widely circulated Telugu newspaper, which would give them regular and timely information of the YSRCP Government schemes and current A.P and national news.

It was pointed out that the monthly subscription charge of the newspaper “Sakshi” was ₹176.50 per month while the monthly rate for “Eenadu” newspaper was ₹207.50 per month.

It was argued that the government had intentionally fixed the additional grant of ₹200 per month to suit the monthly subscription charges of “Sakshi”, Jagan Reddy’s own newspaper, in order to increase the circulation and popularity of the Sakshi daily and overthrow the well established, more reputable, more popular “Eenadu” paper as well as other private publishers.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for Ushodaya Publications, parent company of Eenadu contended:

“This is a matter in which it is virtually a state newspaper. How can a state have its own newspaper? This should be heard by this court now. This is too important an issue.”

The bench that heard the plea comprised of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice PS Narasimha and Justice JB Pardiwala.

CJI DY Chandrachud orally remarked to the counsel for the A.P government, C.S Vaidyanathan:

“Mr Vaidyanathan, According to them, you have fixed the amount at ₹200. They say that the only newspaper which is under ₹200 is Sakshi. It should not really appear that the government is making one newspaper a preferred newspaper. So long as the ceiling which you fix allows for a number of newspapers to have a level playing field, that should serve the purpose. ₹200 is very obvious.”

The judges were curious and enquired about A.P’s “volunteer” program. Advocate Rohatgi explained that it was a Jagan Reddy government project called “grama (village) volunteer” scheme, mostly comprising of people that supported the current YSRCP government, led by Jagan. “You can call them party workers or call them supporters,” said Rohatgi.

The bench questioned Vaidyanathan on how the A.P government could ensure a level playing-field for all newspapers, as should be the case in any state. The advocate for the A.P government answered “We offered in the court that we will increase the ceiling limit amount.”

Rohatgi, counsel for the Eenadu group, was not completely convinced by the Government counsel’s answer. As of now, the court has listed the continuance of the case for 17th April 2023.

In the meanwhile, the newspaper case against the A.P government, puts the spotlight on the details of the Jagan Reddy government’s dubious “volunteer” scheme/project, which consists of paid positions, making the term “volunteer” misleading.

He added yet another human bureaucratic layer to the already existing layers of government administration at the village/Ward level, allegedly filling the created “volunteer” posts with people from/supporters of his own YSRCP party, to be paid for with State funds and adding an additional burden to the State’s exchequer.
