13 transgenders placed on duty in the newly opened wing of Chennai Metro

While there have been multiple pride parades and several voices in the media calling out for equal rights for the transgender community, some welcome changes have been happening in the public sector and government based occupational opportunities.

In yet another welcome turn in promoting the inclusivity of transgenders is the appointment of over 13 transgenders in the newly opened wing of metro stations in Chennai. CMRL is employing about 13 transgender people in ticket distribution, passenger screening and arrangement at these metro stations. The undertaking has drawn praise from various quarters and transgender organizations. It is to be noted that there have been other transgender employees scattered across the city amongst various other metro stations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Chennai on Monday to inaugurate the Metro Rail passenger service from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. This segment of the Chennai Metro Rail was long-awaited and will provide the much-needed connectivity between both ends of the city.

In their own words, the transgender Metro employees hope that this will improve the livelihoods for them. The transcommunity are ostracized on a daily basis and remain the most oppressed and exploited in the society.
