Fresh allegations of overpricing at TASMAC outlets have surfaced from Sivaganga district, triggering renewed political criticism over liquor sales practices under the Tamil Nadu government led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay.
According to a Tamil news update aired by Polimer News on 11 May 2026, TASMAC outlets in Sivaganga were allegedly collecting an additional Rs 5 per liquor bottle from customers above the Maximum Retail Price (MRP). While no official clarification has yet been issued by TASMAC authorities or the district administration, the allegation has reignited debate over illegal extra charges at state-run liquor outlets.

The controversy has also drawn attention because of Vijay’s own earlier political attacks on alleged TASMAC overpricing during the previous regime. At a political event held in Karur in September 2025, Vijay had targeted former minister Senthil Balaji by repeatedly singing the slogan “bottle-ku pathu rooba”, accusing the earlier administration of allowing TASMAC outlets to collect Rs 10 extra per bottle from customers.
Critics are now questioning whether similar practices are continuing under Vijay’s administration, with the Sivaganga allegation being cited as evidence that consumers are still allegedly being forced to pay above MRP.
Meanwhile, a separate dispute erupted at a TASMAC liquor outlet in Marakkanam after customers refused to pay an additional Rs 10 allegedly being charged on liquor bottles, as reported in Dinamalar.
According to local reports, during the tenure of the previous government, TASMAC shops allegedly collected an extra Rs 20 per bottle. Customers returning empty bottles were reportedly refunded Rs 10, while the remaining Rs 10 was retained by TASMAC staff as an “extra charge”, a practice that allegedly became routine in several outlets.
Following the recent change in government, liquor consumers at the Marakkanam TASMAC outlet reportedly confronted employees over the continuation of the additional charge. Customers questioned why the extra collection was still being demanded despite the change in administration and refused to pay the amount, resulting in an argument and tense scenes at the shop.
The dispute reportedly created commotion at the outlet and has since spread to the Brahmadesam TASMAC shop as well, where similar complaints over extra charges have now emerged.
