The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government is reportedly considering granting parole to Muslim convicts lodged in prisons across Tamil Nadu, following demands from Muslim organisations and alliance partners, according to a Dinamalar report.
Sources in the TVK told Dinamalar that several Muslim convicts serving sentences in connection with cases, including bomb blast incidents, are currently lodged in prisons across the state. Muslim organisations, along with several political parties, have been demanding their release for some time.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), both of which had previously pressed the DMK government on the issue and are now part of the TVK-led alliance and Cabinet, have intensified pressure on the present government to address the demand.
The TVK leadership had reportedly held discussions with representatives of several Muslim organisations in an attempt to strengthen ties with them. During these meetings, the organisations reportedly reiterated their demand for the release of the convicts and are said to have indicated that fulfilling the demand would strengthen their support for the TVK.
According to the sources, the TVK leadership initially explored the possibility of releasing the convicts. However, senior police officials reportedly cautioned that releasing those convicted in bomb blast cases could lead to law-and-order issues and trigger public resentment.
In view of these concerns, the report said the government is now considering granting parole to the convicts instead of releasing them permanently.
It is further reported that the TVK leadership is actively pursuing the proposal, making it likely that the convicts could be granted parole.
