TN: Devotees demand renovation of 100-yr-old Sundara Vinayagar temple in Villupuram

There is a 100-yr-old Sundara Vinayagar temple, situated in Kandamaanadi near Villupuram. The public has now demanded that steps be taken to renovate the dilapidated Sundaravinayagar temple.

In this temple, the sanctum sanctorum, the Maha mandapam, the shrine of Lord Murugan and the Mukhamandapam and the Madapalli are all enclosed with a wall without a tower and an entrance gate. The sanctum sanctorum is square in shape. The outer part of the sanctum sanctorum has three forts, sub-pedestal, jagati, triangular dome, in the directions of, south, west and north. The structure is all made of brick and limestone.

The shrine of Lord Murugan is located in the northern part of this great hall. In the sanctum sanctorum, Lord Murugan stand with Goddess Valli and Devasena. There is a pillar on the southern side with the year 1922 AD inscribed on it. Considering this, the temple is believed to be atleast a hundred years old.

This temple falls under the ambit of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department but its dilapidated state shows that there has been no maintenance of this temple.

The land belonging to the temple has been leased by the HR&CE. However, no action has been taken on behalf of the HR&CE to renovate and maintain the temple. There is no separate priest for the temple. Therefore, the public has demanded that the top officials of the HR&CE take action to renovate and maintain the temple for the devotees surrounding to worship.
