Untreated sewage being discharged from the Panchappur Sewage Treatment Plant into the Koraiyar River in Tiruchirappalli has raised concerns over water pollution and public health, with video footage showing wastewater being released into the water body.
The Koraiyar is connected to the canal system and eventually joins the Cauvery, raising concerns that untreated wastewater entering the river could travel downstream and affect water sources used by people in the region.

Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam district secretary Ayilai Sivasuriyan said the video footage showed sewage being discharged directly into the Koraiyar River. He alleged that sewage generated within the Tiruchirappalli Corporation limits was not being adequately treated before being released into the water body.
Sivasuriyan said the alleged discharge posed a serious public health concern and could increase the risk of water-borne diseases. He pointed out that thousands of people visit the Panchappur Integrated Bus Terminus every day and urged the authorities to take immediate action.
He said sewage generated within the Corporation limits should undergo proper treatment before the treated water was released for public use or allowed to enter natural water bodies.
Sivasuriyan also alleged that the Uyyakondan Canal had already been severely polluted because of sewage discharge and had become practically unusable. He warned that allowing a similar situation to continue in the Koraiyar could further contaminate the water system connected to the Cauvery.
He questioned the claims of presenting Tiruchirappalli as a Smart City and one of the cleanest cities while sewage was allegedly being allowed to enter its water bodies.

Residents and farmers have demanded that the Tamil Nadu government and the concerned authorities to ensure that untreated wastewater is not released into the Koraiyar.
They have also called for the treatment facility to be restored to proper operation and for measures to prevent further contamination of the river and connected water sources.
