Former BJP leader and We The Leaders founder K. Annamalai has appreciated the TVK government in its handling of the Gem Granites POCSO case and has called for the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case, arguing that the investigation should extend beyond Veeramani and those already arrested.
In a social media post, Annamalai alleged that the Tamil Nadu Police, once regarded as one of the best police forces in the country, had in recent years become “corrupt”, “inefficient” and an organisation that operates according to the wishes of politicians.
Annamalai cited the initial investigation into the POCSO case against Veeramani as an example of what he described as the police’s shortcomings.
According to Annamalai, despite the existence of video evidence of the alleged sexual abuse of a minor girl, the Tamil Nadu Police had attempted to close the case on the grounds that neither the victim nor the person who committed the offence could be identified.
He said the court refused to accept the police report and ordered further investigation.
Following the reopening of the investigation, police arrested Veeramani and individuals allegedly associated with him, while the minor girl seen in the video has also now been identified, Annamalai claimed.
He further said that the investigation had brought to light information about additional victims, many of whom were minors at the time of the alleged sexual abuse.
According to Annamalai, the developments suggest that the alleged sexual abuse may have continued for several years.
Annamalai also credited what he described as the role of honest and determined police officers in bringing about a change in the case. He said the swift action taken by the TVK government following the court’s directions was “commendable”.
Referring to the recent arrest of a former Gem Granites employee for allegedly possessing the purported obscene video involving Veeramani, Annamalai said the investigation should not end with Veeramani and those associated with him.
He called for action against every police officer and politician who allegedly helped protect Veeramani or acted in his favour over the years, as well as anyone who allegedly attempted to dilute the case by using their influence.
Annamalai also alleged that reports had emerged of large sums of money changing hands in connection with the case.
Calling for an SIT to be constituted immediately, he said the investigation should identify all those who allegedly enabled the alleged offences to continue for years.
Annamalai further stressed the need to ensure that the Tamil Nadu Police does not repeat mistakes allegedly committed during the earlier stages of the case.
He called for the identities of all victims, particularly those who were minors at the time of the alleged offences, to be fully protected, and said that their safety and dignity should not be compromised under any circumstances.
