Sabarimala: Fearing Hindu backlash, Pinarayi Vijayan withdraws cases filed against Hindus

As the ruling Communist Party in Kerala starts to lose some of its cadre to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Pinarayi Vijayan led government has announced the withdrawal of cases filed against the agitators during the Sabarimala protests on the cusp of the Assembly election.

This a clear move by the CPI(M) to pacify and soothe its Hindu voters, who have been fighting to preserve their traditions and way of life, while living in a State which practices appeasement politics.

More than 50,000 Hindus led one of the most peaceful protests in Kerala after the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the entry of women of reproductive age into the temple, breaking centuries of tradition. The state government was adamant about enforcing the Supreme Court’s decision and going against the customs of the temple, disregarding the sentiments of thousands of Hindu devotees.

The BJP had earlier demanded that the state government withdraw all cases against the devotees who had agitated against the state government.

Following the State government’s announcement of the withdrawal of cases, BJP National General Secretary (organisation) B.L Santosh tweeted, “First UDF promised to bring a legislation on Sabarimala. Then @arivalayam , the DMK started presenting Vel in its functions. Now LDF under @vijayanpinarayi announces withdrawing Sabarimala cases. Huge victory for @BJP4India. We set the agenda . Others follow . @BJP4Keralam”

DMK tries to whitewash its anti-Hindu image

In neighbouring Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) too is feeling the heat over its anti-Hindu politics.

At a DMK Gram Sabha meeting held in Ammaiyar Kuppam near Tiruttani, DMK chief MK Stalin was presented with a silver Vel (a spear representing the weapon of Lord Murugan) by the party cadres. Reportedly, poojas were done to this silver Vel at the Tiruttani Murugan temple before presenting it to MK Stalin. However, his sister, MP from Thoothukudi and DMK women’s wing secretary, Kanimozhi refused to accept the Vel presented by her party cadres during an election campaign in Madurai.

There was also the the Karuppar Koottam episode, in which the rabid YouTube channel run by ‘Periyarists’ with links to the DMK, abused Hindu God Murugan and Kandha Sashti Kavasam.

The DMK has been making overtures to Hindu voters to alter this perception of the party being anti-Hindu.
