The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to urgently list a petition challenging the Delhi Police action against student protesters during the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP)-led demonstrations in the national capital, where protesters had gathered to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination paper leaks, as reported in LiveLaw.
The matter was mentioned before a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, with the petitioner’s counsel seeking an urgent hearing on the grounds that students protesting over issues such as the conduct of the NEET examination and reforms in the National Testing Agency (NTA) had allegedly faced police excesses.
However, the Chief Justice declined the request, telling the counsel, “Don’t waste our time, and don’t waste your time.”
The lawyer argued that the petition involved important issues concerning the education system, including the proper conduct of the NEET examination and reforms in the National Testing Agency.
Cutting the submissions short, the Chief Justice responded, “Thank you very much.”
When the lawyer further contended that there were videos purportedly showing instances of police excess during the protests, the Chief Justice said, “We are not interested in videos; we don’t have time to watch.”
The Supreme Court’s refusal comes a day after the Delhi High Court also declined to urgently hear a similar plea relating to the police action during the protests.
While refusing an urgent listing on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court observed, “Don’t drag the Court into this.”
The CJP-led protests in Delhi were organised to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged examination paper leaks and concerns surrounding the country’s testing system.
