The Madras High Court has questioned the DMK’s stand on the Governor’s powers after former Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi sought to quash a corruption case registered against him.
During the hearing, Justice V. Lakshminarayanan reportedly questioned when the DMK had started invoking the Governor’s powers, recalling the party’s earlier criticism of the Governor’s post as unnecessary.
The case concerns allegations that ₹100 crore was illegally collected to secure recognition for private schools during the previous DMK regime.
The complaint was lodged by the Private Schools Association. Following an investigation, the Chennai Central Crime Branch registered a case against several individuals, including Anbil Mahesh and Private Schools Association President P. T. Arasakumar.
Anbil Mahesh subsequently approached the High Court seeking to quash the case, arguing through his counsel that it had been registered without obtaining the Governor’s approval.
In response, the court questioned the DMK’s position on the Governor’s authority, referring to the party’s earlier description of the Governor’s office as being as unnecessary as a “goat’s beard” (goatee).
The judge also noted that the police had filed a counter-affidavit addressing the petition and directed the petitioner’s side to explain its response to the counter-affidavit.
No immediate order was passed on the plea. After the DMK counsel indicated that a petition seeking an early hearing would be filed, the court observed that it could not pass orders on the quash petition until the main case was concluded.
The matter was adjourned to October 29.
