Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) chief Thol. Thirumavalavan has blamed the DMK entirely for the breakdown of the alliance between the two parties, while questioning the ruling party’s approach towards its alliance partners and its handling of TVK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
Speaking at a VCK functionary’s wedding in Dharmapuri, Thirumavalavan said he had worked to prevent the DMK-led alliance from breaking up but claimed that the DMK had made no serious effort to preserve it.
“I struggled to ensure that the DMK alliance should not break, but the DMK is 100 per cent responsible for VCK leaving the alliance,” he said.
Thirumavalavan said the manner in which the DMK treated its alliance partners and its overall approach needed to be debated.
“Why is no one discussing what the relationship between the DMK and Congress was during the elections, and what kind of relationship and approach existed between the Left parties and the DMK? Shouldn’t we discuss this or not?” he asked.
He cited the exit of the Indian Union Muslim League, which he said had travelled with the DMK for more than 70 years, as another issue that needed examination.
Thirumavalavan also questioned the DMK’s decision to make alliance partners contest on the DMK’s rising sun symbol.
“When the MDMK wanted to contest on its own symbol, you said no and made them contest on the rising sun symbol. Would that not have caused bitterness for them? Would that not have created resentment? Would they not want to leave?” he asked.
He similarly questioned the treatment of Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam.
“Kamal Haasan is someone who is celebrated as Ulaganayagan. Should you not have given him two or three seats and embraced that party? Should you not have allowed them to contest on their own symbol?” he said.
According to Thirumavalavan, the DMK’s “rigid approach” towards its allies contributed to the alliance breaking apart.
Thirumavalavan questions DMK’s handling of Vijay
Thirumavalavan also criticised the DMK for allegedly underestimating Vijay’s political rise.
He said the DMK’s failure to assess the TVK correctly and formulate a political strategy against it contributed to the alliance’s eventual defeat.
“Underestimating Vijay was the DMK’s failure to assess the situation. Should they not have assessed it? Should they not have spoken against him accordingly?” he asked.
Thirumavalavan also questioned why the DMK government did not register a case against Vijay in connection with the Karur incident, despite his own earlier demand for action.
“Did I not say that a case should be filed against Vijay in the Karur incident? Why was a case not filed? Why did you behave like this? What was the hesitation in filing a case against him?” he asked.
He said those responsible should have been included in the case if overcrowding and the resulting congestion were considered the cause of the deaths.
“If congestion is said to be the cause of the deaths, should all those who can be held responsible not have been included in the case?” he asked.
Thirumavalavan said the DMK should have challenged Vijay politically when he was openly targeting the party.
“When Vijay spoke very harshly targeting you and the DMK, should you not have spoken against Vijay politically?” he asked.
Says His Assessment Of Vijay Changed
Thirumavalavan also addressed criticism over his decision to support Vijay, saying his position changed after assessing Vijay’s political moves.
He recalled that he had initially been suspicious about Vijay’s outreach to opposition parties, particularly whether it was intended to isolate the DMK.
“I did not have confidence in him then. But how did I gain confidence today? He did not seek the support of the AIADMK. He did not seek the support of the BJP. He sought the support of the Congress and the VCK.”
Thirumavalavan said Vijay had approached the parties rather than the parties approaching him.
“He was the one who came to me. We did not go to him. He needed us,” he said.
He said Vijay’s decision to seek support from the Congress had initially surprised him because of the possible political pressure from the BJP.
“When you showed closeness with the Congress, I was shocked. Any party that is close to the Congress will be targeted by the BJP and pressure will be exerted. But you courageously sought Congress support, and that surprised me.”
Thirumavalavan said he initially wondered whether Vijay’s moves were aimed at isolating the DMK and whether organisations such as the RSS were behind the effort.
“I initially suspected whether this effort was being made to isolate the DMK and whether people like the RSS were behind it,” he said.
He said he therefore decided that the VCK would take a position along with the Left parties.
Insists On ‘Secular’ in Alliance Name
Thirumavalavan also explained his insistence that the word “secular” be included in the name of Vijay’s alliance.
He said Vijay had proposed naming the alliance the “Social Justice Victory Alliance”, following which he intervened and sought the inclusion of the word “secular”.
“When he said, ‘I am going to name this alliance the Social Justice Victory Alliance’, I immediately got up and said that the word ‘secular’ should be included somewhere in the name.”
According to Thirumavalavan, Vijay accepted the suggestion.
“I told him that whatever name he wanted to give it—Victory Alliance, this alliance or that alliance—there should be a place where the word ‘secular’ exists in this situation. He immediately agreed.”
Thirumavalavan said “social justice” alone was not sufficient to distinguish an alliance from the BJP, as different political groups could claim the same principle.
“Social justice is a general term. The BJP can also speak of social justice. Casteists also speak of social justice. The Left also speaks of social justice. You also speak of social justice. Social justice has become common.”
He argued that the inclusion of “secular” was important because it clearly indicated opposition to the BJP.
“Only when you include ‘secular’ will it mean anti-BJP and anti-RSS. Therefore, the importance of secularism must be emphasised.”
Thirumavalavan said the alliance had now been formed on the basis of the principles of secularism and social justice and maintained that there was no reason for the VCK to feel guilty about its political decision.
