A case has been registered under seven sections against DMK functionary Raja Raghupathi in connection with an alleged sex racket operating at a lodge and a beauty parlour in Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district.
Police said they had been receiving continuous complaints about sex work allegedly taking place at various locations in Kumbakonam, including lodges and beauty parlours.
Following the complaints, Kumbakonam West police conducted surprise raids at several locations the day before yesterday.
During the raids, police found young women allegedly being used for sex work at a beauty parlour on Sarangapani South Street. Four women were rescued from the premises.
Police also found that an alleged sex racket was operating at a lodge on Nageswaran Temple South Street, which is owned by Raja Raghupathi, identified as the organiser of the DMK Engineers’ Wing. Six women were rescued from the lodge.
The ten rescued women were subsequently handed over to a shelter home in Tiruchirappalli.
Following the raids, police registered a case and arrested three people in connection with the alleged racket. Those arrested were lodge employees Manikandan of Anaikkarai and Mahesh of Kumbakonam, along with Chottal Thakur of Jharkhand, who was identified as the manager of the beauty parlour.
Police have now registered a case against Raja Raghupathi under seven sections in connection with the alleged sex racket.
Police have initiated steps to arrest Raghupathi. However, he is currently absconding, according to the police.
