Leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] reportedly forcibly entered the Kumaran Kundru Murugan Temple in Tiruppur by breaking open its locked gates, alleged Hindu Munnani, stating that the move was an attempt to take possession of the temple premises despite the matter being pending before the Madras High Court, as reported in Organiser.
In a statement issued on 28 July 2026, Hindu Munnani State President Kadeswara C. Subramaniam alleged that State CPI(M) secretary P. Shanmugam and party cadres broke the lock of the over 100-year-old temple and entered the premises while the dispute over the temple land remained sub judice.
According to Subramaniam, devotees had approached the court after the temple was demolished by government authorities in January 2026, seeking judicial intervention. Despite the pendency of the case, he alleged, CPI(M) leaders and cadres entered the temple premises after removing the lock.
He further alleged that police personnel present at the spot did not prevent the alleged trespass or take action against those involved.
Questioning the conduct of the CPI(M) leaders, Subramaniam asked how they could allegedly enter the temple property when the matter was before the court. He further alleged that the party’s association with the ruling dispensation had emboldened its leaders to attempt to encroach upon temple land and claimed that such actions would bring disrepute to the Joseph Vijay-led TVK government.
Demanding immediate action, the Hindu Munnani leader urged the Tamil Nadu government to initiate legal proceedings against those allegedly involved in the incident and ensure protection of the temple property.

The latest controversy comes months after the demolition of the Kumaran Kundru Murugan Temple in Rakkiyapatti village under Ettiveerampalayam Panchayat in Avinashi taluk of Tiruppur district.
In January 2026, district authorities demolished the temple, stating that it had been constructed on government poramboke land. The demolition triggered protests and clashes, during which a Hindu Munnani functionary was reportedly injured.
According to Hindu Munnani, the temple, also known as the Selvamuthu Kumarasamy Temple, stood on approximately 2.8 acres of government land and housed shrines dedicated to Murugan, Vinayagar, a Sivalingam, and Nandi.
Subramaniam maintained that the Murugan idol installed at the site was more than a century old and alleged that its removal had been carried out under political pressure. He claimed that local CPI(M) leaders had exerted pressure on the district administration, following which the Collector ordered the overnight removal of the idol despite resistance from local devotees.
He further stated that the Archaeological Research Department had informed the court that the idol was over 100 years old and argued that the authorities should have awaited the outcome of the court proceedings before taking any action. According to him, despite directions that a decision should be taken only after judicial consideration, the idol was removed.
