Integrative System Of Medicine Becoming Popular Worldwide: Droupadi Murmu

Integrative System Of Medicine Becoming Popular Worldwide: Droupadi Murmu

The idea of an integrative system of medicine is becoming popular worldwide, said President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday. She said this at the seventh foundation day of the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) in New Delhi. “Ayurveda is one of the oldest medical systems in the world. It is India’s invaluable gift to the world. Ayurveda emphasises holistic health management while maintaining a balance between mind, body, and spirit,” Murmu said.

While there has been awareness around the medicinal value of the trees and plants, modernised society “moved away from nature, and stopped using traditional knowledge”, the President said. “It became easier to get medicine from a doctor than adopt home remedies. “Now awareness among people is increasing. Today, the idea of an Integrative System of Medicine is becoming popular all over the world. Different medical systems are helping to provide health to people as complementary systems to each other,” Murmu said. The President said that although faith in Ayurveda is “unwavering”, some people take advantage and cheat innocent people; spread misleading information and make false claims.

“This not only harms the money and health of the public but also defames Ayurveda,” she said, adding that “more qualified doctors are needed so that people do not have to go to uneducated doctors”. She was happy to note that in the past few years, the number of Ayurveda colleges and students has increased significantly; which is expected to increase further. Development of Ayurveda will benefit humans, animals and the environment, the President said.

Further, noting that it is “good to have healthy competition” among different medicine systems, Murmu asked to avoid criticising each other and to foster a “sense of cooperation”. Murmu also called on to increase “focus on research and continuous improvement in the quality of medicines to ensure the relevance of Ayurveda”.

India To Become Global Leader In Biopharmaceuticals, Bio-Manufacturing By 2030: Jitendra Singh

India To Become Global Leader In Biopharmaceuticals, Bio-Manufacturing By 2030: Jitendra Singh

India will become a global leader in biopharmaceuticals, bio-manufacturing, and life sciences by 2030, said Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, on Wednesday. Singh said this while speaking at the sixth CII Pharma and Life Sciences Summit: 2024, held in the national capital on Wednesday.

He commended the country for “emerging as a hub for affordable and high-quality medicines”. India must now also focus on vaccine equity, and technology transfer to boost global vaccination efforts, Singh said. “The ‘Make in India’ initiative is pivotal in reducing our dependence on imported Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). By strengthening our domestic manufacturing, we are bolstering self-reliance and ensuring critical healthcare supplies are readily available,” the Minister said.

“We now rank third in pharmaceutical production by volume and 14th by value,” he added. Lauding the pharma industry, Singh said the transition from a generic-focused model to the development of biopharmaceuticals and biosimilars, has been one of the “most remarkable shifts”. Further, the Minister said the next industrial revolution will come from the biotech sector. “Thanks to initiatives like the PLI scheme, India is well on its way to becoming a global leader in biopharmaceuticals, bio-manufacturing, and life sciences by 2030,” he said, adding “There is still much to be achieved”.

The development of the world’s first DNA vaccine for COVID-19 and the efforts to develop the first human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for adolescent girls, which will prevent cervical cancer exemplified India’s leadership in global health. India has also significantly transformed health outcomes, especially for low- and middle-income countries, by producing 65 per cent of the world’s vaccines.

Calcutta HC Orders CBI Probe Into Torture Of Two Women In Police Custody

Calcutta HC Orders CBI Probe Into Torture Of Two Women In Police Custody calcutta high court the bengal files

A single-judge Bench of the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the alleged torture of two women BJP activists in police custody.

State police arrested the two women activists of the BJP after a complaint was lodged against them, accusing them of making derogatory comments about the minor daughter of Trinamool Congress’ General Secretary and the party’s Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Later, the two women approached the single-judge Bench of Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj, accusing police of excesses, including physical assault, while they were in custody.

On Tuesday, while ordering a CBI probe into the matter, Justice Bharadwaj observed such actions on part of the state police were simply unacceptable.

According to him, due to the seriousness of the complaint of assault in police custody, the investigation cannot be entrusted to the state police, and hence, the CBI should probe the matter.

Recently a video surfaced where these two woman activists of the BJP were allegedly heard making derogatory remarks against Abhishek Banerjee’s minor daughter from a rally organised to protest against the rape and murder of a woman junior doctor of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata in August.

Based on that video, whose authenticity could not be cross-checked by IANS, a third woman filed a complaint at Diamond Harbour Police Station. Acting on that complaint, the police arrested the two women.

The hearing in the matter concluded on Monday. Justice Bharadwaj then kept the order on reserve. During the hearing, Justice Bharadwaj also raised the question of how FIRs were filed in different police stations in various districts in this single case.

Serving as a forum for senior army commanders to review current operational preparedness, deliberate on critical strategies and outline future directives, the conference’s first phase will focus on critical national security issues and strategic aspects aimed at sharpening warfighting capabilities, a Defence Ministry release said.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will deliver a keynote address to the assembled senior army leadership in Sikkim and will be briefed on the emerging security challenges and the army’s response in the security domain. The key issues to be deliberated during the two-day session will include the growing importance of a multi-pronged national security strategy that incorporates integration of civil-military fusion and the diplomatic, information, military, and economic (DIME) pillars to counter contemporary threats besides the need for developing low-cost technologies and alternate strategies to counter the rapidly evolving character of warfare.

Aligned with the goal of technological absorption, the senior hierarchy will deliberate on various issues, including the infusion of technology in professional military education and explore the possibilities of recruiting domain specialists in niche domains. Other matters under deliberation will focus on enhancing the overall organisational health and easing the processes of the field formations to make them more resilient and responsive.

In the second phase of the Army Commanders Conference, the senior hierarchy of the army will congregate in Delhi on October 28-29. There will be a discussion on the evolving geopolitical landscape, followed by brainstorming on operational matters and meetings of various Boards of Governors to deliberate upon welfare measures and schemes for the financial security of serving soldiers, veterans, and their families.

Complaint Filed Against Gangadhara Nellore TDP MLA For Allegedly Misusing Scheduled Caste Status

Complaint Filed Against Gangadhara Nellore TDP MLA For Allegedly Misusing Scheduled Caste Status

A formal complaint has been lodged against VM Thomas, the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing Gangadhara Nellore constituency in Chittoor District, alleging misuse of his Scheduled Caste (SC) status. The SC ST Rights Forum, a non-government organization, submitted the complaint to the Chief Electoral Officer of Andhra Pradesh, accusing Thomas of contesting from a reserved SC constituency despite being a Christian, which violates the Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order of 1950.

According to the complaint, Thomas was elected in the 2024 General Elections from the Gangadhara Nellore SC Reserved constituency. However, during a recent visit to Tirumala, Thomas allegedly signed a declaration stating that he is a Christian while expressing respect for Hindu beliefs. News outlets, including Zee Telugu and Andhra Watch, reported on this declaration, raising concerns over his eligibility to hold an SC certificate.

The Constitution (Scheduled Castes) Order of 1950 states that individuals who convert to Christianity or Islam are no longer eligible for SC status. The forum alleges that Thomas concealed his religious identity to contest in the SC-reserved constituency, thereby misusing reservation benefits meant for the welfare of the SC community.

The SC ST Rights Forum has requested the Chief Electoral Officer to direct the District Collector of Chittoor to initiate an inquiry into the matter and refer it to the District Level Scrutiny Committee. The complaint seeks a thorough investigation to determine whether Thomas is ineligible for the SC certificate and if any legal actions need to be taken.

Kerala Court Orders Probe Against CM Vijayan For Beating Oppn Protesters

Kerala Court Orders Probe Against CM Vijayan For Beating Oppn Protesters

A lower court in Kerala has ordered a probe against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for beating Congress-led opposition protestors in 2023 during his bus yatra. The Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court has asked the Ernakulam Central Police to conduct a probe following a complaint filed by the Ernakulam district Congress Committee President Mohammed Shiyas.

In December 2023, Vijayan and his entire cabinet were travelling in a bus across the 140 Assembly constituencies. The bus yatra, named ‘Nava Kerala Sadas,’ was taken out to meet the people and lay the foundation for building a new Kerala. However, the Congress-led opposition staged a protest against Vijayan, claiming that the yatra was a waste of resources. At numerous places, the protesters were mercilessly beaten up by the police, while cades of the CPI-M also joined in roughing up the protesters.

The attack on the protesters first became news on the second day of the trip in Vijayan’s home district- Kannur, when both the police and the local CPI-M cadres badly beat up the protesters. At Alappuzha, things went out of control when the Chief Minister’s personal security guard jumped out of the bus and, using a big lathi, was seen beating up a protesting Youth Congress worker.

However, the Chief Minister then said it was an act of rescue (Reksha Proverthenem) to save the protesters from going under the moving bus. The police probe team that investigated the incident gave the security guard a clean chit.

Telangana’s Judicial Commission On SC Sub-Categorisation To Submit Report In 60 Days

Telangana's Judicial Commission On SC Sub-Categorisation To Submit Report In 60 Days

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday directed that the one-man judicial commission on Scheduled Caste (SC) sub-categorisation submit its report within 60 days. The government also decided that new job notifications should be issued after the commission’s report is received.

The Chief Minister asked officials to take steps to implement the Supreme Court order on SC sub-categorisation and suggested the use of the 2011 Census data as a basis for the measure. He wanted officials to make arrangements within 24 hours to constitute a judicial commission. At a meeting with the Cabinet Sub-Committee on SC sub-categorisation, the Chief Minister asked officials to take action based on the sub-committee’s decisions. The sub-committee on Tuesday decided to recommend the appointment of a one-man judicial commission to study sub-classification within the SC reserved categories. Sub-committee Chairman and Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, sub-committee members Damodar Rajanarasimha, D. Seethakka, D. Sridhar Babu, government advisors K. Kesava Rao and Vem Narender, Chief Secretary Santhi Kumari and other senior officials attended the meeting.

The sub-committee earlier decided to recommend the constitution of a one-man judicial commission, led by a retired judge of the Supreme Court or High Court, to assess intra-backwardness among different castes within the SCs. Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted that this process must be legally sound and withstand judicial scrutiny. During the meeting, the officials informed that the Advocate General had already given the draft terms of reference for appointing the judicial commission.

It was also reported that various recruitment boards in the state, including the TSPSC, the TGLPRB, the SCCL, the MHSRB, and the Transmission Corporation, have been directed to submit data on the sub-caste-wise employment of SCs. About 30 per cent of the required data from the Finance Department has already been gathered.

We May Follow Haryana Model To Win Assam Polls: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika

We May Follow Haryana Model To Win Assam Polls: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika

Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday said that the BJP’s return to power in Haryana for the third consecutive term is a remarkable achievement, and Assam may follow the Haryana model when the northeastern state heads to the polls in 2026.

Hazarika told reporters here, “Our party won the Haryana assembly polls after staying in power in that state for 10 years. This is a very big thing. Any party that wins state polls for the third consecutive term is a remarkable thing and the BJP showed it in Haryana.” He said that when Assam goes to polls in 2026, the state unit of the BJP may follow the Haryana model. “We will complete 10 years in power in Assam before the next assembly polls in 2026. Our party will seek a win for the third consecutive term two years later. At that time, we may follow the Haryana model where our party made a hattrick in the recently concluded polls,” Hazarika said adding that in many parameters other states have been following the Assam model and hence there is no harm in taking good things from other states.

The minister stated, “The Assam government’s direct cash transfer scheme to women – Orunodoi was successfully replicated by many states in the country. We have given 1.5 lakh jobs in the last three years which is also a talking point in national politics.” Notably, the BJP surprised everyone by winning 48 seats and securing a third straight term in the Haryana Assembly elections. According to pollsters, this achievement is due to a number of important tactics.

First, important OBC support was obtained by consolidating non-Jat votes, especially by confirming Nayab Singh Saini as chief minister. Second, in order to fight anti-incumbency, the party replaced 60 candidates with new ones, which was a stark contrast to Congress’ strategy. Third, development and Direct Benefit Transfers were the focus of intensive campaigning. Furthermore, anti-BJP votes were diminished by a dispersed opposition. Lastly, the BJP won the polls due to its strong election apparatus, which performed better than the Congress.

BJP’s A.N.S. Prasad Slams Tamil Nadu Government’s TASMAC Sales Push For Diwali, Calls For 3-Day Closure

BJP Slams TN Government's TASMAC Sales Push For Diwali, Calls For 3-Day Closure

In a recent statement, ANS Prasad, the spokesperson for the Tamil Nadu BJP, voiced serious concerns over the state government’s initiative to increase TASMAC (Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation) sales during the Diwali festival. He criticized the administration for prioritizing alcohol sales over the welfare of impoverished families and urged Chief Minister MK Stalin to take immediate action to stop this initiative.

Prasad condemned the state government for setting sales targets for TASMAC outlets, calling it “shameful” and harmful to numerous families struggling during the festive period. He proposed that the Chief Minister declare a three-day holiday for TASMAC stores on 30, 31 October and 1 November 2024 to ease the burden on economically disadvantaged individuals during Diwali celebrations.

He denounced the government’s focus on boosting alcohol sales, arguing that it would only exacerbate the hardships faced by many low-income families. “This is not a success; it’s a distressing outcome that will hinder many from celebrating Diwali,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for the government to acknowledge the detrimental effects of such policies on society.

Prasad also pointed out the Tamil Nadu government’s contradictory approach to alcohol regulation. The current push to increase sales contradicts those promises despite Chief Minister Stalin’s commitments to enforce prohibition and reduce TASMAC outlets. He labelled these actions a significant betrayal of public trust.

Additionally, Prasad warned against fostering a culture of alcohol consumption, suggesting that the government’s actions could lead Tamil Nadu toward increased substance abuse and related social problems. He called for stricter measures to combat illegal liquor sales and to ensure that legitimate TASMAC stores do not exploit vulnerable communities during the festive season.

Anti-people and anti-social forces are thriving in Tamil Nadu now that TASMAC is under the control of DMK Minister Senthil Balaji, who has a reputation for corruption. This situation is dangerous, as Tamil Nadu risks becoming a liquor empire where the “bar” culture and rowdyism prevail.

TASMAC should be phased out, and illegal liquor sales must be strictly controlled. The government must ban illegal 24-hour bars and act strongly against their operators. Minister Senthil Balaji’s decision to push for record alcohol sales during Diwali is reprehensible. There is a growing sentiment that the enforcement department should intervene to protect the people.

Under no circumstances should drug culture be promoted in Tamil Nadu. The TASMAC order will distress countless poor families, particularly during the Diwali season when they are already stretched thin buying essentials for their children and families. The government’s plans resemble the actions of a tyrannical regime.

The Tamil Nadu government should not make the mothers weep because of the Diwali liquor sales target. Chief Minister Stalin and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin must intervene and ensure that TASMAC declares a holiday for liquor shops during the festival.

He also questioned whether Thirumavalavan would condemn the Tamil Nadu government. The conference started as a pro-abstinence conference but ended as an anti-BJP gathering.

Is the government unconcerned about promoting liquor sales during the Diwali Hindu festival? The people of Tamil Nadu should recognize that while the government provides a small sum as a women’s rights benefit, it simultaneously takes much more from them through TASMAC. It is crucial for the people to realize that the government is becoming increasingly anti-people and to support those advocating for their rights.

Andhra Pradesh Government Issues Historic Directive To Safeguard Vaidic And Agama Traditions Free From Bureaucratic Interference

Andhra Issues Directive To Safeguard Vedic And Agama Traditions Free From Bureaucratic Interference

In a groundbreaking move, the Andhra Pradesh government has become one of the first states in India to issue an abstract implementation under Section 13(1) of the Endowments Act a directive that mandates government officials to refrain from interfering with the Vedic and Agama traditions of temples, preserving the sanctity of their customs and practices. The government emphasizes the importance of strict adherence to statutory provisions to ensure these traditions are upheld without disruption.

According to GO No 223, dated 9 October 2024, the AP government instructed all departmental authorities to comply with Section 13(1) of the AP Charitable and Hindu Religious Institutions and Endowments Act, 1987. This act aims to ensure temples’ autonomy regarding Vaidic and Agama traditions and preserve the sanctity of their customs and practices without disturbance in Andhra Pradesh.

It declares that no administrative authority, including the Commissioner, Regional Joint Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, or Assistant Commissioner, shall interfere with the Agama traditions, customs, and practices of the respective temples in any way.

According to the order, all decisions regarding important religious matters, such as the performance of rituals and services to deities, the scheduling of auspicious times for Yagams and Kumbabhishekams, and the introduction of new rituals, the opinions of the senior-most archakas and religious staff shall take precedence concerning religious aspects. Executive Officers may form Vaidic committees with the senior religious staff of the temples, if necessary. If any doubts or disagreements arise within the committee, the opinions of recognized Peethadhipathis related to the specific Agama may be consulted, notes the order. No religious institution shall be compelled to adopt the customs of another institution, even if they belong to the same Agama, it further says.

Executive authorities shall not interfere in rituals or services to deities, the scheduling of auspicious times, or festivals except to ensure adherence to that specific temple’s Agama traditions, customs, and practices. The Commissioner of Endowments is tasked with taking further action on this matter.
