Usha Vance, US Second Lady Designate, Has A Chennai Connection Through IIT-Madras

Just as people in Andhra Pradesh were celebrating the Telugu roots of Usha Vance, the wife of US Vice President-designate, Chennai did not want to be left far behind and a connection to the city has been unearthed.

Usha Vance, soon to become the United States’ Second Lady, has deep-rooted connections with Chennai through her family’s history at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras). As the first Indian-origin woman to hold the role of Second Lady, her ties to one of India’s premier institutions underscore her unique heritage and background.

Usha’s father, Professor Radhakrishnan Chilukuri, graduated with a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT-Madras in 1977. Her grandfather, Professor Rama Sastri, played a pivotal role in establishing the institute’s academic legacy. As the first Head of the Physics Department when IIT-Madras was founded in 1959, Sastri served the institution in three terms and was instrumental in developing its early science programs.

In a notable moment of recognition, Professor Sastri received a special award from then Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Bhakthavatsalam in 1965 for his initiative in creating a vegetable garden on campus, a project that reflected his commitment to campus life and sustainability.

During IIT-Madras’s initial years, residential quarters were not yet built on the campus, though Professor Sastri resided there for about 15 years following his retirement. Later, the family migrated to the United States, where Usha eventually met and married J.D. Vance, a prominent politician and author, who is now set to take on the role of Vice President.

As Usha Vance prepares to step into a new chapter as the Second Lady of the United States, her family’s connection to Chennai and IIT-Madras adds a distinctive cultural and academic legacy to her story, bridging ties between two nations.

Case Filed Against NTK Chief Seeman For Singing ‘Controversial’ Song About Karunanidhi

Case Filed Against NTK Chief Seeman For Singing 'Controversial' Song About Karunanidhi

A case has been filed against Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) party chief coordinator Seeman at the Thanthonimalai Police Station under two sections, including defamation related to former Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

The controversy stems from a campaign event during the Vikravandi Assembly by-election, where NTK member Sattai Duraimurugan sang a song about the late Karunanidhi. A case was registered in Trichy district following the incident.

On 4 August 2024, Seeman, the NTK chief coordinator, referenced Duraimurugan’s controversial song, stating that he, too, would sing it, challenging the police to take action. Seeman also used inappropriate language during his statement.

Following this, Tamil Rajendran, a lawyer from Karur, filed a complaint with the District Collector of Karur on 5th August, requesting action against Seeman for his remarks. Despite no immediate action being taken, Rajendran pursued the matter further, filing a case in the Criminal Arbitration Court on 19 August 2024. The court accepted the case for hearing on 7 October 2024.

On 14 October 2024, the Karur Criminal Arbitration Court granted permission for an investigation, instructing the Thanthonimalai Police to look into the matter and take necessary action.

As per the court’s order, a case was formally registered against Seeman on 7 November at Thanthonimalai Police Station for making defamatory statements and publishing them online. Lawyer Tamil Rajendran stated that if found guilty, Seeman could face up to two years in prison, along with a fine.

Political Wing Of Banned Terror Outfit PFI & ADMK Ally SDPI Wants Ban On Major Mukund Varadarajan’s Biopic Amaran

Political Wing Of Banned Terror Outfit PFI & ADMK Ally SDPI Wants Ban On Major Mukund Varadarajan's Biopic Amaran

Following Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) chief M. H. Jawahirullah, Nellai Mubarak, the state president of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), has strongly objected to the film ‘Amaran’. They accuse the film of portraying the Kashmiri Muslim community in a negative light, depicting them as terrorists. The movie is based on the real-life story of Major Mukund Varadarajan, who played a key role in the 2014 counter-terrorism operation in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir.

Despite receiving widespread praise from political figures such as TN BJP chief and former IPS officer Annamalai, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, and Anbumani Ramadoss, the film has been starting to get criticism from some Dravidianist, now Muslim leaders have started to voice out.

Nellai Mubarak, the state president of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), met with the media in Chennai to express strong objections against the film ‘Amaran’. He accused the film of distorting facts and propagating the harmful narrative that Muslims, particularly those from Kashmir, are anti-national.

Nellai Mubarak said, “Regarding the recently released movie Amaran, the film team has said that they have filmed the story of late Mukund Varadarajan, a former Indian Army Major who died fighting for India as a biopic. The sacrifice of soldiers is immense and we sincerely respect any soldier’s sacrifice. But we strongly condemn the action taken by ‘Raaj Kamal Films’ and then Chief Minister Udayanidhi Stalin’s company intent to malign the minority Muslims and the struggling democratic forces in the name of making such film.”

The SDPI leader also condemned the film for misrepresenting the slogan ‘Azadi’, a historic symbol of national liberation and democratic struggle, by equating it with terrorism. At the same time, he stated that the film promoted ‘Jai Bajrangbali, a slogan associated primarily with groups like Bajrang Dal, as a patriotic battle cry. However, what he overlooked is that ‘Jai Bajrangbali‘ is also the actual war cry of the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles as well as the Rajput Regiment. Mubarak warned that such rhetoric, which could incite fear and hostility towards minority communities, is extremely dangerous.

Mubarak also rejected the film’s portrayal of Kashmiri women as “half-widows,” a depiction suggesting that their husbands had become terrorists and abandoned them. He described this as false, biased propaganda meant to manipulate public perception.

He argued that ‘Amaran’ is a direct sequel to ‘The Kashmir Files‘, both of which, in his view, spread misinformation and distorted the reality of the Kashmir conflict. He accused the film of furthering a political agenda that promotes division and hatred, while falsely casting certain communities as separatists in order to portray one side as heroes.

Mubarak denounced the film as part of the rising tide of anti-Muslim sentiment across the country and criticized Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister for endorsing a film that he believes fuels such hatred. He called on all democratic forces to raise their voices against films that promote divisiveness and called for ‘Amaran’ to be banned.

Canadian Police Arrests Hindus Following Brampton Temple Attack By Khalistanis, No Action On Khalistanis Giving Death Threats To Indian Diplomats And PM Modi

Canadian Police Arrests Hindus Following Brampton Temple Attack By Khalistanis

Peel Regional Police are facing criticism for the blatant bias after recent arrests related to demonstrations at the Hindu Sabha Temple in Brampton, Canada. On 8 November 2024, Peel Police released a video update announcing additional arrests and charges after incidents at the temple on November 3 and 4. However, questions have been raised over the police’s handling of the situation, with accusations that the enforcement actions disproportionately targeted Hindu individuals while overlooking alleged provocations by pro-Khalistani supporters.

According to the Peel Regional Police, tensions initially escalated during a “demonstration” at the Hindu Sabha Temple on 3 November 2024, with further confrontations occurring the following day. Officer Tyler Bell-Morena, speaking on behalf of the Peel Police, stated that the 4 November 2024 event saw “hundreds gathered, many of which were armed with weapons.” He also noted that circulating videos captured “several offences,” including an individual allegedly using a loudspeaker to incite violence against Sikh temples.

Subsequently, on 6 November 2024, police arrested 57-year-old Ranendra Lal Banerjee of Toronto, charging him with public incitement of hatred, citing Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada. Banerjee was released with conditions and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.

Additionally, Peel Police issued arrest warrants for two other individuals involved in the November 4 demonstration. Twenty-four-year-old Armaan Gahlot of Kitchener and 22-year-old Arpit (no surname) of no fixed address face charges including uttering threats, conspiracy to commit assault with a weapon, and conspiracy to commit mischief.

Despite these actions, critics argue that Peel Police’s response has been one-sided, with no arrests made among pro-Khalistani demonstrators, despite allegations of violence and threats against Hindu community members. Videos shared widely on social media reportedly show individuals carrying swords and issuing threats at the November 3 event. Additionally, accusations have surfaced regarding Peel Police officers allegedly supporting pro-Khalistani demonstrators and failing to protect Hindu attendees during the clashes.

These allegations have led some to question the obvious partiality of Peel Police, – the department has targeted Hindu youth while pro-Khalistani demonstrators face no repercussions. Critics further point out that no arrests have been made following past incidents involving threats against Indian diplomats or displays of anti-India sentiment, which some view as incitement to violence.

Peel Police has formed a Strategic Investigative Team to review all criminal incidents from the November 3 and 4 events. In their statement, police reiterated their commitment to upholding peaceful protests, while firmly condemning violence, threats, and vandalism.

The blatant bias in the handling of recent events has prompted calls for accountability.

“We Can’t Fight Myanmar, India, And Bangladesh Simultaneously, We Cannot Afford To Have 3 Enemies Bigger Than Us”, Says Mizoram CM Lalduhoma At Baptist Church Event In USA

Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Speaks At Baptist Church Event In USA

On 4 September 2024, Mizoram’s Chief Minister PU Lalduhoma delivered aseeminglypowerful speech in Indianapolis, USA, advocating for the unity of the Chin-Kuki-Zo people—ethnic communities spread across India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. His remarks called for these tribes to unite under a shared cultural and religious identity, transcending the national borders currently dividing them.

Lalduhoma’s message, urgingone leadership to achieve our destiny of nationhood, emphasized their vision of a single homeland for the Chin-Kuki-Zo people. This notion has raised concerns about a possible separatist movement with far-reaching implications for regional stability.

Lalduhoma’s address centered on the idea that these communities wereunjustly dividedacross three countries and must come together to reclaim theirdestiny of nationhood.

https://twitter.com/VladAdiReturns/status/1853007644694339793

But recently, another video surfaced where he seems to be calling India as an enemy. Here are transcripts of the Q&A session conducted after his speech.

When asked about what steps illegal refugees from Burma need to take to officially live as migrants in India – he replied, Good question. India is not a signatory to the refugee protocol. Officially there cannot be a refugee in India. So, we call them displaced people. That’s why we cannot give the status as well as the advantages of being a refugee, but at the same time they are being given the same status, and same treatment in kind and all ways everything is given today.

He was then asked how medical doctors among the refugees practice legally in Mizoram, he replied, Even the children are going to school and colleges and there is no differentiation between them. That should be applied to doctors also, there is no harm in giving them practice, even though I think some of our organizations here, they are in coordination with Victoria are opening and running clinics in Aizawl is rendering medical help and assistance. So, if they have a qualification, I don’t think there is any harm.

When asked what plans the government has to initiate communication with the concerned authorities of Bangladesh government to address the ongoing unrest situation to stop all violence, he replied, This Bong people are brothers and sisters. They keep on coming to India, seeking shelter, and the BSF people who are on duty in the border in India, they push them back. Last time when I met the PM and HM, I told him that I cannot push them back. the PM insisted that I push them back, I said, sir from the bottom of my heart there is one thing I cannot do, please don’t pressurize me. He asked me to meet the HM, I met the HM, and we agreed that once they reached the soil of our country, they should not be pushed back. That arrangement has been made when the refugees coming from Bangladesh, particularly the Bong community, they don’t face problems any longer.”

In the next question, he was asked about Chin Kuki Mizo coming together under India, and how peace can be brought along with Chin brotherhood in Manipur especially when there is a political change in Bangladesh, in such a case how a united brotherhood can be achieved. He replied, It’s just like a two-way traffic. As far as we are concerned, we shall never ever accept the division of our people into 3 countries. This will never be acceptable. The boundaries are imposed boundaries by the British government. In that committee, we are never represented, we are never consulted. Therefore, it is an imposed boundary and will never accept it. We will never accept construction of a border fencing between us.”

He further added, It all depends on whether we are prepared, whether we are willing to be under a single administrative unit within India, that you will decide. This is one part. So far as ZORO was concerned (ZORO – Zo Reunification Organisation), ZORO’s main policy was to reunify within India. We cannot fight Myanmar, we cannot fight India, we cannot fight Bangladesh simultaneously at the same time. We cannot afford to have 3 enemies which are bigger than us. So that is one thing we have to do on our part.”

https://twitter.com/AbhijitChavda/status/1854501553035677748

He added, The second thing is what is the opinion of India. For that, I am nobody to make, to say a statement on behalf of the government of India. There are things, if I accept you, you accept me, if I don’t accept you, you don’t accept me. That is diplomacy. So, it all depends on us. That is why I am here, to talk about unity within India means something. I won’t talk much beyond that. Keep guessing what the next is.”

Tensions Escalate In Cuddalore Following Attack Of PMK Cadre; Widespread Protests Erupt Across North Tamil Nadu

Widespread protests have erupted in the northern districts of Tamil Nadu, led by the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) party, following the thrashing of one of their cadres allegedly by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party members. The police are on high alert to control the escalating protests. However, the situation intensified as Vanniyar Sangam from various districts joined the protests, further fueling the unrest.

A few days ago, a PMK member named Chellathurai (28), from Manjakkollai village near Bhuvanagiri in Cuddalore district, was returning home after delivering wedding invitations to his relatives. He encountered a group of over 15 people in a village called P Udaiyur, who attacked him brutally with sticks and liquor bottles after he told them to stay out of his way and stop drinking. Chellathurai lost consciousness from the injuries he sustained, which included severe bleeding from his head, face, and body.

According to a report by Asianet Tamil, even after he fell, the violent mob continued to humiliate him by kicking him and stomping on the Vanniyar caste symbol on his shirt, all while recording the incident on video to showcase their “victory.” These acts of cruelty on the PMK member were then shared on social media, which went viral, leading to the widespread protests.

According to police reports, a group of young men from Manjakkollai, including A Suriya (28), A Ajay (26), S Anandaraj (30), K Vignesh (26), and S Anand (27), were drinking at a cemetery in P Udaiyur on 1 November night. They were joined by others from P Udaiyur, including V Saravanamorthy (26), K Kavi Varman (21), U Anburaj (25), K Kathiravan (25), Premkumar (20), and Vikraman (24). A heated argument erupted between the two groups, and Chellathurai (28), a PMK cadres, resulting in a physical confrontation that left him severely injured. The assailants fled the scene afterward.

Locals found the injured Chellathurai and took him to Cuddalore General Hospital. The Bhuvanagiri police registered a case based on his complaint, leading to the arrest of six individuals from P Udaiyur on the same day on five different charges. PMK supporters and Chellathurai’s relatives protested on 3 November, blocking the Vriddhachalam-Chidambaram Road at the Manjakollai bus stop to demand further arrests.

Chidambaram sub-division DSP T. Augustin Joshua Lamech spoke with the protesters, and after the police provided assurances, the crowd dispersed. According to report by The New Indian Express, a relative of Chellathurai vandalized flagpoles belonging to the PMK and VCK, claiming they were the source of the conflict. Police assured the protesters that the revenue department would handle the removal of the flagpoles.

Regrettably, the video of a woman breaking flagpoles of both the party was deliberately edited and shared, showing her specifically targeting and destroying the VCK party’s flagpole. This act further stoked unrest and the video quickly went viral, escalating tensions.

Meanwhile, VCK members, again, held a meeting in Bhuvanagiri under the guise of protest, where they spoke derogatorily about the Vanniyar community and threatened that they will cut the head of Vanniyar Sangam president PT. Arulmozhi.

In this context, Cuddalore is witnessing intense protests from the Vanniyar Sangam, and the police have deployed over 500 personnel to prevent any untoward incidents.

Chellathurai fell unconscious with injuries and bleeding all over the gang’s murderous attack head, face and body.

Even then, the murderous mob humiliated him by kicking him, stomping on the Vanniyar caste symbol on his shirt chest and insulting him capuring the video. For another 42 years we will continue to beat the Vanniyars. “They should buy it and keep it,” they shouted.

Then, one day, I saw in the records that it is no longer ours but is now marked under Waqf and the Karnataka State Waqf Board.” “I consulted a lawyer. I was told I have to prove my rights in the Waqf Tribunal. But why? Why is the burden of proof on me when someone else is claiming my land? Shouldn’t they have to prove it’s theirs?” he questioned. “Why do I have to fight for the land that belonged to my family for generations? This isn’t just happening to me, many families in my village are facing the same issue. In some cases, entire villages have been claimed. We are all scared,” said another farmer from Indi Taluk.

National Anti-Terror Policy, Strategy To Be Unveiled Soon: HM Amit Shah

National Anti-Terror Policy, Strategy To Be Unveiled Soon: HM Amit Shah archbishop

The Union government will soon release a national policy and strategy to counter terrorism, that will help demolish the entire terror ecosystem, said Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, reiterating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s slogan of “zero tolerance for terrorism”.

Speaking at the ‘Anti-Terror Conference-2024’ organised here, HM Shah said the National Counter-terrorism Policy and Strategy will soon be ready for circulation among all states as they have to lead the fight against “terrorism, terrorists and the terror ecosystem.” Highlighting the importance of infusing technology and training officers in using technology, HM Shah urged state police forces to join hands with Central agencies like the NIA and use federal forensic facilities to demolish the terror ecosystem. He also paid tributes to 36,468 policemen who laid down their lives for national security and in the fight against terror, claiming that there has been a drop of 70 per cent in terror activities in the country since 2014.

He highlighted the new provisions in the three criminal laws that, for the first time in 76 years after Independence, define terrorism and allow security agencies to pursue trials in absentia against terrorists and financial criminals. To become a developed nation, the country also needs to upgrade its security system and put in place a unified anti-terrorism ecosystem, he said. “A strong ecosystem against terror can be built only if all states implement the ATS structure, STF structure and training module suggested by the Central agencies,” he said.

Stressing on the need for information sharing in the battle against terror, HM Shah appreciated the progress made by the Multi-Agency Centre (MAC), under the Intelligence Bureau. Highlighting the important role that states need to play to fight terror, as security is a state subject, the Home Minister called upon police station-level staff not to suppress information but share it with other agencies. “Suppressing information is not going to help the nation. Police station-level staff need to follow the evolving strategy which started with ‘Need to know’ to ‘Need to share’ and should now be seen as ‘Duty to share’,” he said.

He said state police should join the NIA in building a database of illegal weapons seized across the country. HM Shah also highlighted the achievements of I4C – Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) – established by the Ministry of Home Affairs to provide a framework and ecosystem for law enforcement against cybercrimes. The fight against terror would be incomplete without demolishing its financial system.

Whether it is cryptocurrency, gold smuggling, drug smuggling or hawala, the state-level security system needs to contribute towards dismantling the terror finance network. “Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act should be used freely against the financial network of the terror ecosystem,” he said, urging states to coordinate with the NIA on this issue. The Home Minister also urged the media to highlight recovery of explosives and weapons by the police forces to keep them motivated in the fight against terror.

Senior Resident Doctor Of Bengal’s Jhargram Medical College Found Dead In Hotel Room

Senior Resident Doctor Of Bengal's Jhargram Medical College Found Dead In Hotel Room

A senior resident doctor, attached to the Jhargram Medical College & Hospital, was found dead in mysterious circumstances in a hotel room in West Bengal’s Jhargram town on Thursday afternoon, officials said. The deceased has been identified as Dipro Bhattacharya, a senior resident doctor attached to the Anaesthesia Department of the medical college & hospital.

The police suspect this death to be a case of suicide. According to some of his colleagues, he had been long vocal against the “threat culture” prevailing in different medical colleges & hospitals in the state, including that of RG Kar Medical College & Hospital, which had recently been in the national headlines because of the ghastly rape and murder of a woman junior doctor there in August this year.

What has made the death even more mysterious is his last message posted in a WhatsApp group of doctors, where he claimed that when he was attached to RG Kar, he had been vocal against the threat culture there. He also claimed in the message that those who instil fear among students and support nepotism are no less guilty than RG Kar’s former Principal, Sandip Ghosh, who is currently in judicial custody.

In the message, he had also reportedly claimed that such people are responsible for the depression, anxiety, and hopelessness of thousands of young doctors. It is learnt that on seeing the message in the WhatsApp Group on Thursday afternoon, the other doctors in the group tried to contact him over the phone but found it was switched off.

Thereafter, they reached the hotel where the Bhattacharya had been staying. Meanwhile, Jhargram district police had recovered the body of the victim and sent it for a post-mortem examination. For the time being, the district police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. The exact reason for the death will only be known after the autopsy report is available.

Will Take Andhra Pradesh To Number 1 Slot In Education Sector: Nara Lokesh

Will Take Andhra Pradesh To Number 1 Slot In Education Sector: Nara Lokesh

Andhra Pradesh Education, Information Technology (IT) and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh on Thursday said he would take the state to the number one position in the country in the education sector. Inaugurating the international Higher Education Fair (IHEF) at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) campus being organised by VIT and the State Government, Minister Lokesh felt that the youth should focus on becoming job creators rather than looking for employment opportunities.

The Education Minister flagged off a driverless van, a drone and a robot on this occasion. He gave a call to the youth to establish start-up companies taking advantage of the latest technology as the AP Innovation Society is ready to extend all possible cooperation and assistance. A seed fund with Rs 250 crore has been created for this purpose, he added. The youth should realise their dreams by moving forward with the perspective of broad thinking, the Minister told the youth and made it clear that the State Government’s sole aim was creating an education system with moral values. Education institutes like VIT should focus on outcomes instead of outputs, he maintained.

The IT Minister said that the youth should move forward with the single goal of achieving success and should concentrate on new innovations keeping themselves abreast of periodical developments across the globe. “I too worked with the World Bank in 2005 after doing my MBA from Stanford University. I too faced several ups and downs like anyone else,” the minister recalled. The Minister said that he undertook various developmental activities in the State as a Cabinet Minister in 2017 and contested from Mangalagiri Assembly segment in 2019 but was defeated with a meagre margin of 5,300 votes. “No doubt I was upset for a couple of days but later I stood solidly by the people of Mangalagiri for the full five years following which the people have given a mandate in my favour in the last elections with the highest majority in the State,” he said.

Observing that he is committed to achieving his goals, the minister said that youth should take him as an example. The State has umpteen job opportunities presently, the Minister said that the developmental works in the capital city of Amaravati are moving at a fast pace. It is heartening to see representatives from various noted universities across the globe attending Thursday’s meeting held in Amaravati, Lokesh remarked and said that he eagerly waits for the success of the students He thanked all the universities, other educational institutes, teachers, students and their parents for actively participating in this event.
