Return Of MUDA Sites By CM Siddaramaiah’s Wife Will Be Strong Proof: Activist & Petitioner Krishna

MUDA Scam By CM Siddaramaiah and petitioning Activist Krishna

Snehamayi Krishna, one of the petitioners who brought attention to the alleged irregularities in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA), leading to a political storm in Karnataka, says his objective is to reclaim thousands of sites worth Rs 5,000 crore that were illegally allocated by the authority.

Krishna is the complainant in the FIR filed against CM Siddaramaiah by the Karnataka Lokayukta and in the Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

In an interview with IANS, Krishna maintained that attempts were made to imprison him to prevent him from approaching the High Court, and he is prepared to face any consequences that may arise in the future.

IANS: The MUDA case involving CM Siddaramaiah is being investigated by both the Karnataka Lokayukta and the ED based on your petitions. What is your reaction?

Krishna: I am happy with the way things are unfolding. This development is a significant victory for our struggle.

IANS: Now that CM Siddaramaiah’s wife Parvathy has returned the sites in question to MUDA, how do you think the case will proceed?

Krishna: It’s a positive development. Until now, they had maintained that they wouldn’t return the sites. By returning them, they are essentially acknowledging the illegal allotment of sites by MUDA. This will serve as strong evidence in the case.

IANS: How long did you spend gathering material and documents for the MUDA case?

Krishna: I spent three months collecting documents related to the MUDA scam. I also received documents from others and used them to file the complaints.

IANS: Initially, your allegations against CM Siddaramaiah were dismissed. Now, with court rulings in your favour, how do you view the recent developments?

Krishna: I proceeded with the battle, supported by proper documentation. Some people initially didn’t understand the case or the evidence we gathered. However, the court has now clearly pointed out the illegalities and the supporting evidence in the MUDA scam. I have more evidence to prove my claims.

IANS: CM Siddaramaiah has said that the MUDA scam doesn’t attract money laundering charges, which are being investigated by the ED. What are your thoughts on that?

Krishna: The sites, which are worth crores, were taken by making payment of a mere Rs 1,000. The Mysuru Deputy Commissioner mentioned this in his letter to the government. I filed a complaint with the ED to investigate the Rs 5,000 crore scam involving the illegal allotment of land by MUDA, using the site allotment to CM Siddaramaiah’s family as an example. I’ve called for a comprehensive investigation by the ED.

IANS: The BJP has demanded security for you. Do you feel you need protection?

Krishna: I don’t need security right now. I don’t trust the Mysuru Police Commissioner, who holds his position due to the Chief Minister’s favour. The police don’t seem inclined to ensure my protection. I requested protection and made a written submission on August 18, 2024, even asking for a gunman. However, if they provide security now, it will be problematic for me. The authorities are already sharing my call details and tracking my movements. I also don’t fear physical assault from the Chief Minister’s supporters, as they now seem convinced of the legitimacy of the MUDA scam allegations and have stopped making statements against me.

IANS: You come from a middle-class family. How is your family supporting you?

Krishna: My family was initially very emotional, fearing that I was endangering my life by challenging the Chief Minister. However, they are now convinced. I’ve reassured them that my struggle is for the greater good, and they’re supporting me.

IANS: Don’t you feel threatened?

Krishna: I follow Swami Vivekananda’s teachings. If you have a clear goal and honesty, you’ll naturally receive support. God will guide and support you, and that’s exactly what happened in my case. Support comes automatically when you pursue a righteous cause with determination. It’s like tasting the sweetness only after chewing the sugar.

IANS: What about the police cases filed against you?

Krishna: There was a plan to send me to jail on false charges to derail my efforts in the MUDA case. The intent was to prevent me from approaching the High Court. These attempts will likely continue, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m imprisoned. The system in our country operates this way. There should be action taken against the filing of false cases. Unfortunately, the police often collaborate with those in power in such circumstances.

IANS: The BJP has been supporting you. How do you feel about their backing?

Krishna: I’m thankful for their support. It’s the duty of a political party to extend their help to someone who is fighting against systemic corruption.

Geert Wilders Presses For Emergency Law To Restrict Asylum Influx

Geert Wilders Presses For Emergency Law To Restrict Asylum Influx

Dutch far-Right Party for Freedom (PVV) leader Geert Wilders, who is leading the largest partner in the four-party ruling coalition, intensified pressure on the government for emergency legislation to curb the influx of asylum seekers, hinting that the coalition could collapse if his demands are not met.

Speaking to Dutch media on Tuesday in The Hague, Wilders stressed that the coalition parties, which include his PVV, the New Social Contract (NSC), the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), and the Farmer-Citizen Movement (BBB), had already agreed on the need for emergency measures in their coalition agreement.

“I hope that people realise that this has not only been agreed but that there is also very little room to manoeuvre for us,” Wilders said.

“If we do not get emergency legislation, then the government will have a problem. I do not know whether we will continue happily for much longer.” In the coming weeks, the Dutch government is set to discuss potential emergency measures related to asylum policy. The PVV is pushing for the Cabinet to declare “exceptional circumstances” to curb the influx of asylum seekers, Xinhua news agency reported.

This issue has heightened tensions within the coalition, particularly with NSC, which is sceptical that the government can provide a sound legal justification for invoking emergency powers, a requirement for their support. While NSC hesitates, Wilders insists that an emergency law must be passed, regardless of the obstacles.

While Wilders ramped up pressure on the government, he stopped short of explicitly threatening to bring down the coalition if his demands weren’t met. However, he later took to X to reiterate his stance.

“The Netherlands is crying out for drastic measures to restrict the asylum influx,” Wilders said on X. “Our country is in danger of becoming one big asylum centre.” “We have made agreements in the coalition, including emergency measures. The whole of the Netherlands sees that the Netherlands is in an asylum crisis. If NSC ducks out again, they will destroy this Cabinet,” he said.

Five Arrested For Drug Smuggling In Chennai

Narcotics Smuggling Racket Busted At Chennai Port, 112 Kgs Drugs Seized

The Greater Chennai Police on Wednesday arrested five individuals on the charges of selling drugs near the Koyambedu market.

The police said that the five were involved in the sale and distribution of narcotic pills to college students and other youngsters in Chennai city and suburban areas.

A total of 49 narcotic pills, Rs 17,400 in cash, a button knife, a machete, a weighing machine, five mobile phones and an expensive motorcycle were recovered from the possession of the accused.

Acting on a tip-off, Mohandas (24), a salon worker, was arrested by the Koyambedu Police, and on interrogation, he informed about his four accomplices. The team led by Sub Inspector Yuvraj arrested Vijay, an accomplice of Mohandas and also the drug carriers, Ganapathi, Santhosh and Lokesh – all students.

On interrogation, the accused said that they buy the drugs in bulk from Mumbai and sell the contraband in retail packs among the college students of Chennai and surrounding areas. The accused, according to the Koyambedu police, also frequently travelled to Andhra Pradesh to procure ganja and used to sell it to college students and young professionals.

The Greater Chennai Police said that during interrogation, the accused revealed information about drug syndicates in the city and adjoining districts like Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram.

Police officials told IANS that the Greater Chennai Police will be cracking down on all organised drug syndicates in Chennai to make the city narcotics-free. It may be noted that since IPS officer A. Arun assumed office as Commissioner of Greater Chennai Police, the Police Department has been criticised for “encountering” hardcore criminals.

Arun replaced Sandeep Rathore after Tamil Nadu BSP president K. Armstrong was brutally killed near his residence by bike-borne assailants on July 5. Thiruvengadam, one of the main accused in the Armstrong murder case was killed in an encounter with police. In September, history-sheeter Kakkathoppu Balaji was killed in an encounter with the police and 10 kg ganja was seized from his possession. Another criminal involved in the distribution of drugs, Raja, was killed in an encounter with police in September.

“No Confidence In TN Police”, Madras HC Pulls Up TN Police Over Handling Of Child Rape Case, Transfers Investigation To CBI

Madras High Court criticised Chennai police

The Madras High Court has transferred the investigation of the Anna Nagar child rape case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), expressing serious concerns about the handling of the case by the Tamil Nadu police. The court noted that despite a 10-year-old girl being repeatedly raped, the authorities harassed her family and delayed the arrest of the main suspect for 12 days. This probe also addresses her mother’s claims of being physically assaulted by a police inspector at the station.

A bench comprising Justices SM Subramaniam and V Sivagnanam highlighted the disturbing treatment of the survivor and cited violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court stated, The parents of the victim have lost confidence in the Tamil Nadu police, underscoring the urgent need for a thorough investigation by a central agency.

The incident came to light on 29 August 2024 when the girl experienced severe stomach pain, prompting her mother, a cook, to seek medical attention at a local clinic. Doctors at Kilpauk Medical College subsequently diagnosed her with signs of repeated sexual assault, leading to a report being filed at the Anna Nagar all-women’s police station. An FIR was registered on 30 August 2024, naming a 31-year-old water delivery man, Satish, as the primary suspect in the assault.

After the FIR was lodged, the mother reported that she was summoned to the police station while her daughter remained in the hospital. During this visit, she alleges that the investigation officer, Raji, assaulted and threatened her. The police have denied these allegations but have transferred the officer involved. Additionally, the accused was arrested only after media coverage brought attention to the case.

During the proceedings, the court raised questions about procedural irregularities, particularly regarding how the child’s statement was recorded late at night without parental presence. The bench also criticized the decision to register FIRs only against a journalist and a YouTuber for leaking information, while no action had been taken against the police inspector involved in the case.

Complicating the situation, the girl reportedly changed her earlier statement, incorrectly accusing Satish and instead alleging that her uncle’s minor son had assaulted her in 2022. The mother has raised fears that the police pressured her child into altering her statement.

On 10 September 2024, the Madras High Court took suo motu cognizance of the case. The mother filed a habeas corpus petition, alleging that she was assaulted at the police station and had her phone confiscated, while her daughter was questioned at the hospital without parental presence. Reports indicated that police recorded the girl’s statement late at night, which also violated the POCSO Act.

After her second statement was taken, the minor boy involved was presented to the Juvenile Justice Board and subsequently released.

The court has since ordered police protection for the survivor and her family while directing further hearings to ensure a comprehensive review of the allegations against both the suspect and the police handling of the investigation.

“I Am Younger Brother Of Kanimozhi Madam’s PA”: Inebriated Youth Threatens Traffic Police In CBE

Kanimozhi PA brother

A viral video from Coimbatore shows an intoxicated youth, claiming to be the brother of DMK leader Kanimozhi‘s PA, confronting police during a traffic stop on 1 October 2024. The incident on 100 Feet Road in Gandhipuram has raised concerns about individuals using political connections to evade law enforcement.

In the footage, one of the youths confronts a traffic officer, claiming, “Who are you? I am Kanimozhi ma’am’s PA’s younger brother. You can speak to him.” He further alleges that the police were misusing his phone and demands its return, stating, “I can prove it. But my phone is not with me. Give me my phone.” Despite the police asking him to apologize for his behavior if he wanted his phone back, his friends attempted to restrain him, insisting that they had done nothing wrong.

The intoxicated youth’s referencing Kanimozhi to get away from the police’s clutches shows how people in the state behave.

The incident raises questions about the conduct of individuals under the influence of alcohol and their interactions with law enforcement and the use of politician’s names to threaten police, public, and government authorities.

Palani Temple Rajagopuram Damaged, Temple Officials Blame Monkeys

Palani Temple Rajagopuram Damaged

Temple authorities blame monkeys for damaging the Rajagopuram of the Palani Dandayuthapani Swami Temple just a year and a half after its Kumbabhishekam. They assured devotees that repairs are underway, with a reparation puja planned soon.

A few days ago, it was reported that part of the Palani temple Rajagopuram (temple tower) was damaged. The temple, one of Lord Murugan’s six sacred abodes (Arupadai Veedu), draws thousands of visitors daily from across Tamil Nadu and other states. Annual festivals such as Thaipusam and Panguni Uthiram are celebrated with great devotion, attracting large crowds.

The temple Kumbabhishekam, a sacred consecration ceremony, was last performed on 27 January 2023, after a 16-year gap. However, just a year and a half later, a portion of the top of the Rajagopuram broke off, particularly in the horn-like area on both sides. This unexpected damage has left many devotees deeply concerned. It is also alleged that among the reasons for the damage the authorities gave include damage due to rain or monkeys.

Temple officials acknowledged the damage, assuring devotees that steps are being taken to repair the Rajagopuram. It is true that a part of the Rajagopuram has been damaged. We are rehabilitating the area, and a small-scale Kumbabhishekam and reparation puja will be performed after the repairs. Devotees should not be alarmed, a temple official reportedly said.

It is also reported that the temple authorities blamed monkeys for the damage caused to the Palani temple Rajagopuram. The authorities allegedly said, “Kumbabhishekam is done once in 12 years and hence it is normal for the temple towers and surrounding sculptures to be damaged. Monkeys at the Palani temple habitually climb the temple towers and damage the sculptures and relics inside.”

The temple administration stated that only damage to the Kalasam on the temple tower should cause concern, and they are taking steps to repair the damaged part of the Palani temple Rajagopuram, so devotees should not worry.

Notably, the temple had undergone major renovations, with the Palanayam ritual held on 2 December 2019, marking the start of the Kumbabhishekam works. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was delayed by three years before finally taking place in January 2023.

The temple, which is under the purview of the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department of the Tamil Nadu government, also saw a hurriedly conducted Kumbhabishekam in 2023.

The Hindu Edits Pinarayi Vijayan Interview Allegedly Without Verification, Issues Apology Later

The Hindu Edits Pinarayi Vijayan Interview

The Hindu recently published an interview with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in their daily which stirred controversy for some of the comments. It later came to light that the statements made by Vijayanlinking hawala money seizures from Malappuram to Muslim extremists for orchestrating anti-State and anti-national activities“, as published in The Hindu, were allegedly added at the request of a PR agency.

What Was The Interview About?

Vijayan addressed various political and organizational issues after the 2024 general election in this interview. The Central Committee’s review highlights a loss of traditional voter support to the BJP. However, he refuted the claim that it failed to counter Hindutva politics, attributing the BJP’s rise in Thrissur to Congress losing significant votes rather than CPI(M) support shifting to the BJP. When asked about the BJP’s potential emergence as a third force in Kerala’s bipolar political landscape, he downplayed the notion. Still, he acknowledged the BJP’s increased vote share, emphasizing their long-term strategy for Kerala and that the CPI(M) is introspecting whether the BJP gains came at its expense but is not yet alarmed.

What Was The Controversy & What Was In The Original Interview?

As of today, the Hindu has edited out the content in their online portal. It has removed the statements added in the published interview linking hawala money seizures from Malappuram to Muslim extremists for orchestrating anti-state and anti-national activities. As reported in Kerala Kaumudi, the statements are as follows:

“False allegations are being raised that we have a soft approach towards the RSS. This propaganda is aimed at political gain. Other extremist elements are also at work promoting communal divisions. While the government of Kerala is working against Muslim extremist elements, these forces are trying to highlight that we are working against Muslims.

For example, 150 kg of gold worth Rs 123 crore and hawala money were seized by the state police force in Malappuram in the last five years. This money reaches Kerala for anti-national activities. As for Anwar, we have already constituted a special investigation team to investigate his claims.”

Aftermath Of These Statements

The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala intensified its demand for an apology from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan for allegedly defaming the people of Malappuram by associating them with contraband and hawala activities. V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition, criticized Vijayan for making baseless accusations, which he argued aligned with the Sangh Parivar’s divisive rhetoric against minorities. Satheesan also linked the rise of gold smuggling in Kerala to Vijayan’s first term, highlighting the arrest of M. Sivasankar, Vijayan’s former Principal Secretary, as a result of a central investigation into gold smuggling.

Ramesh Chennithala, a member of the Congress Working Committee, accused Vijayan of deepening communal tensions by unfairly blaming Karipur airport in Malappuram for smuggling. He argued that the smuggling issue worsened after the Union government raised gold import duties. Meanwhile, BJP State President K. Surendran accused Vijayan of retracting his earlier comments about anti-national forces being behind gold smuggling due to fear of alienating fundamentalist groups. In response, Vijayan denied linking any specific region or community in his statements.

Pinarayi Clarification

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan clarified on 1 October 2024 that he did not mention any specific region or community in his interview with The Hindu published on 30 September 2024. He stated, The newspaper had included a portion that I had not said, which led to a controversy. The newspaper has by now given an explanation and has admitted to the lapse. He further acknowledged The Hindu as a responsible media outlet, expressing uncertainty over how the mistake occurred.

Addressing the issue of gold smuggling, Vijayan explained, The maximum gold smuggling in the State takes place through the Calicut International Airport. But since the airport is located in Malappuram district, they are registered as cases from Malappuram. This does not mean that only people in Malappuram are resorting to gold smuggling.”

The Hindu Issues Apology

The Hindu formally apologised for including statements in an interview with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that were not part of the original conversation. The newspaper admitted that the additional remarks were inserted at the request of a PR representative from Kaizzen, the agency that facilitated the interview. The PR representative had requested the inclusion of comments regarding gold smuggling and hawala transactions in Malappuram, allegedly linked to anti-State activities, which the Chief Minister did not originally state during the interview.

The newspaper acknowledged this as a serious lapse, stating,This should not have happened, and we unreservedly apologise for this serious error of judgment on the part of the reporter and for the lack of editorial oversight in this instance.

According to The Hindu, the interview was conducted on 29 September 2024 at Kerala House in New Delhi, lasting approximately 30 minutes. Two PR representatives were present alongside the Chief Minister during the session. Following the interview, one of the PR representatives requested the addition of remarks that the Chief Minister purportedly made in a previous press conference. The Chief Minister’s press secretary later disowned these lines.

This editorial alteration by The Hindu would have gone unnoticed had it not been for the backlash faced by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The fact that a prominent publication would insert statements suggested by a PR representative into a supposedly exclusive face-to-face interview raises troubling questions about the integrity of journalism. Such actions blur the lines between factual reporting and external influence, undermining readers’ trust in the media.

By allowing external parties to alter the narrative, The Hindu has unintentionally compromised the objectivity expected of responsible journalism. This incident not only damages the newspaper’s credibility but also sets a dangerous precedent for editorial content being influenced by those with vested interests. In a time when media transparency is critical, this lapse highlights the need for stricter editorial oversight and accountability to safeguard the integrity of news reporting.

Experts Welcome Union Health Ministry’s Draft Bill On Passive Euthanasia

Passive Euthanasia

Hailing the Union Health Ministry’s draft Bill on passive euthanasia, experts on Tuesday called it a “progressive step”. The recent ‘Draft Guidelines’ call on doctors to take a “considered decision” on withdrawal of life support in terminally-ill patients. Euthanasia is the practice of intentionally ending life. It is of two types: Active and passive. Active euthanasia occurs when medical professionals, or another person, deliberately do something that causes the patient to die. On the other hand, in passive euthanasia, a patient is intentionally left to die by not providing a life support system. As per the ministry, passive euthanasia can be considered “in a patient’s best interests, to stop or discontinue ongoing life support in a terminally-ill disease that is no longer likely to benefit the patient or is likely to harm in terms of causing suffering and loss of dignity”.

Dr. Harshal R Salve, Additional Professor, Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi, told IANS, “This is a very welcome and progressive step by the health ministry.” “This will go a long way in ensuring the welfare of family members, and attendants as well as the peace of the patient. It will also reduce out-of-pocket expenditure and reduce the strain on the already stressed health care set up in India,” he added. The guidelines also lay out conditions such as if the individual has been declared brainstem dead, or if there is a medical prognostication and considered opinion that the patient’s disease condition is advanced and not likely to benefit from aggressive therapeutic interventions. Patient/surrogate-documented informed refusal, following prognostic awareness, continuing life support, and compliance with procedure prescribed by the Supreme Court are also to be considered. The new draft norms, meanwhile, also include guidelines for patients with severe, devastating traumatic brain injury, who show no recovery post 72 hours or more.

Dr Rajat Agrawal, Director and Head, Critical Care, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla said passive euthanasia is needed because the patient’s autonomy is paramount. “It reduces suffering and pain of the patient and the family. Prolongation of life on artificial life support systems reduces the dignity of the individual with increased burden on society and stretched out healthcare systems,” Agrawal said. However, some experts raised concerns about the role of physicians in it. Passive euthanasia is withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining medical treatments, allowing patients to die naturally.

According to some experts, it can overburden physicians and also put them at risk of litigation by the family later. Meanwhile, Agrawal noted that the provision “has the potential to be misused for vulnerable patients”. “A section of the medical fraternity may also feel that it goes against the First Principle of Medicine: Do no harm,” the doctor said. However, to make it successful in the Indian context, “it should be well-etched in the framework of the Indian Constitution,” the expert suggested. Clear communication with the patient and family is of vital importance. He also urged the need to boost the support systems for palliative care.

Karnataka Govt Is Conspiring To Send Me To Jail: Union Minister Kumaraswamy

Kumaraswamy

Union Minister for Large Industries and Steel HD Kumaraswamy said on Tuesday that the Karnataka Congress government is conspiring to send him to jail. “In the past, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s team conspired against me to send me to jail even for a day. Now, his current team is dreaming of doing the same. I had spoken about an officer’s misconduct and exposed his story to the media. I have the information on where and in whose chamber, they discussed of sending me to jail,” said the Union Minister.

He said that he has taken bail as the law allows it. “I obtained bail as my lawyers advised me to take bail because the corrupt officers of this government can do anything. That’s why I obtained bail,” he said. Union Minister Kumaraswamy said that he has been aware of everything that is happening in Karnataka. “What happened in the misappropriation case involving Rs 80 crore? The SIT arrested randomly by including the name of an unrelated person in the case,” he said. The Union Minister claimed that he had not used any authority for personal gains. “My questioning of that officer wasn’t about my case. I had written a letter seeking permission for the Governor’s office to conduct an investigation, and since it was leaked to a private channel, I questioned it,” he said.

“I condemned the police officer’s arrogance. I revealed the officer’s background, which shows direct links to the land mafia in Bengaluru and involvement with illegal activities. Has this individual been given an IPS position to support anti-social forces? The officer is accused number two in a criminal case and is currently out on bail,” said Kumaraswamy. He further questioned the Chief Minister, saying: “What would you do if an officer comes to you and calls you a ‘criminal ‘Chief Minister’? Some officers used obscene language against me in letters written to their colleagues. These letters weren’t official memos – they had no seals or departmental emblems,” the Union Minister alleged.

He claimed that such officers misuse their power to please the government. “That’s why I had to take bail. The officer also has a case against him. He is accused number two and has obtained a stay in the High Court. I have only taken bail, but I haven’t obtained a stay,” the Union Minister said. He added that Karnataka Home Minister Parameshwara pretended not to have mentioned his name by the IPS officer who used derogatory language in his letter.

“But there are also allegations against the Chief Minister. What will you do if the officer calls you a ‘criminal CM’? How was the letter written against me circulated? Another letter from the Chief Minister’s office reached me on Monday night,” the Union Minister said.
