DMK Govt Removes Maha Kumbh Mela Banner Glorifying Sanatana Dharma Amid Backlash From Dravidianist Groups

DMK Govt Removes Maha Kumbh Mela Banner Glorifying Sanatana Dharma Amid Backlash From Dravidianist Groups

The Greater Chennai Corporation has decided to remove banners displaying advertisements for the “Maha Kumbh Mela” after facing strong backlash from Dravidianist groups. The banners, which promoted the Uttar Pradesh government’s event featuring Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, carried the message: “The beauty of Sanātana, the glory of Maha Kumbh Mela. Celebrate the wonderful culture of human society.” The Dravidianist and Periyarists deemed these advertisements unacceptable, prompting the government to take down the banners.

The controversy sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with many accusing the ruling DMK of being consistently opposed to Sanātana Dharma. DMK Chief Minister MK Stalin has expressed such views publicly on multiple occasions, and his son, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, further escalated the situation by organizing an “Eradicating Sanātana Conference.” In response to the banners celebrating the Maha Kumbh Mela, netizens targeted the ruling DMK, accusing them of aligning with the BJP and helping their narratives in the state.

In this context, the DMK’s unofficial mouthpiece and Dravidian propaganda handle ‘YouTurn,’ has defended the government’s decision in removing the banners. They placed the blame on the previous AIADMK government, claiming it was their responsibility. However, netizens quickly criticized this, pointing out that the current government has been in power for three years and questioning how they could continue to blame their predecessors.

In a post on social media platform X, YouTurn stated, “The advertisement about Sanātana has been removed. During the last AIADMK regime, private companies were given contracts to purchase advertisements and publish them in cinema halls. There is no government involvement in such advertisements. However, these advertisements have been removed after controversy.”

Some of the criticisms expressed are outlined below.

DMK HR&CE Minister Sekar babu Makes Insensitive Comments About Devotees Standing In Queue For Long Time At Tiruchendur Temple

DMK HR&CE Minister Sekar babu Makes Insensitive Comments About Devotees Standing In Queue For Long Time At Tiruchendur Temple

A viral video featuring PK Sekar Babu, the DMK Minister for Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE), has sparked widespread backlash on social media. In the video, Sekar Babu appears to insult devotees in Tiruchendur by saying, “He goes to Tirupati and waits 24 hours in queue, but that won’t count,” disregarding the long wait and hardships of the devotees, including women, children, and the elderly, who were struggling in a long queue with inadequate facilities.

The Tiruchendur temple’s beach area is also grappling with severe sea erosion. A large 7-foot-wide crater has formed in the bathing area in front of the temple, prompting authorities to ban devotees from bathing there. This damage to the temple beach has led to calls for the government to address the ongoing erosion issue.

In response to these concerns, DMK Thoothukkudi MP Kanimozhi, HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu, Minister for Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Anitha R. Radhakrishnan, and District Collector K. Elam bahavath visited the Tiruchendur temple beach on 18 January 2025. During their visit, a group of devotees, who had been waiting for over four hours on the public darshan queue to see the deity, began shouting slogans at the ministers. They complained about a lack of drinking water, the inability to see the deity, and the crowded conditions, especially with children.

One of the women devotees expressed her distress, saying, “We can’t move in this crowd, and the children are starting to faint.”

Another angry devotee also voiced his frustration, saying, “Look at how many children are crying and shouting here. There’s no milk, nothing, without it they are crying in distress. We are humans too, right?” He pointed out the unbearable conditions after standing in the queue for long hours.

As the ministers walked by, having arrived to inspect the Tiruchendur beach erosion, another devotee, standing on the rail, shouted, “We condemn the HR&CE department!”

In the midst of this, HR&CE Minister Sekar Babu remarked, “What shall we do? If he is in a queue. One should stand in queue if he comes to temple. He goes to Tirupati and waits 24 hours in queue, but that won’t count,” while walking away from the crowd. The exchange, along with the video of the incident, has since gone viral on social media. Members of various Hindu organizations have expressed their anger, accusing the minister of making disrespectful comments towards the devotees.

Guruvayur Municipality Issues Notice To Shut Down Abdul Hakeem’s National Paradise Restaurant Over Tulsi Plant Desecration Incident

The Guruvayur Municipality has issued a notice to permanently close the National Paradise Restaurant following a widely condemned incident involving its owner, Abdul Hakeem. The closure comes after CCTV footage surfaced showing Hakeem allegedly desecrating a sacred Tulsi altar near the Guruvayur Temple. The footage, which went viral on social media, sparked outrage across the Hindu community.

In the video, Hakeem is allegedly seen plucking pubic hair and throwing it on the Tulsi plant, an act deeply offensive to Hindu religious sentiments. The incident led to widespread protests, with the Hindu Aikya Vedi filing a formal complaint that prompted Hakeem’s arrest.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and other Hindu organizations subsequently performed a purification ritual to restore the sanctity of the altar.

This is not the first controversy involving Hakeem or his establishment. In 2017, health inspectors seized stale and spoiled food from the National Paradise Restaurant, which was the third such raid on the premises. Allegations of political intervention had reportedly suppressed earlier complaints. Additionally, Hakeem has faced accusations of pelting stones at buses carrying Ayyappa devotees and allegedly installing hidden cameras in the restaurant’s restrooms.

The Thrissur City Police, in a Facebook post, claimed Hakeem has been undergoing treatment for a mental disability for 25 years. They threatened against sharing the viral video, stating that fostering social unrest through such posts would result in strict legal action.

The municipality’s decisive action to shut down the restaurant has been hailed as a victory for justice by the local community.

Coimbatore Scheduled Caste Sanitation Worker Alleges Exploitation, Harassment, And Threats By CSI Church Administration; Wife Attempts Suicide

Coimbatore Scheduled Caste Sanitation Worker Alleges Exploitation, Harassment, And Threats By CSI Church Administration; Wife Attempts Suicide caste discrimination

In a distressing incident in Coimbatore, Ram Kumar, a sanitation worker at the CSI Christ Church in Coimbatore, has alleged that the church administration deceived him and his wife, Murugeshwari, with false promises of permanent employment if they converted to Christianity. After converting, they were removed from their jobs, and Murugeswari reportedly faced sexual harassment from a staff member. When the couple questioned the church administration, they were allegedly abused with caste-based slurs. This mistreatment drove Murugeswari to attempt suicide, and she is now said to be undergoing treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital.

Murugeshwari, a resident of Coimbatore, hails from Dindigul and lives with her husband and three children. She and her husband had been working as cleaners at the CSI Christ Church, opposite the Coimbatore Government Hospital. Without prior notice, Murugeshwari was transferred, prompting her to seek clarification. Instead of addressing her concerns, the administration allegedly subjected her to caste-based abuse and harassment. When her husband Ram Kumar protested, he too was suspended.

On 3 November 2024, during a confrontation with church staff, a man named Packia Selvan allegedly insulted and attacked them using caste-based slurs. When the couple reported this to the church treasurer, Godwin, they were told to wait until the new year for potential reemployment.

The couple claims they were manipulated into converting to Christianity in 2018 under the false pretense of receiving secure permanent employment. They accuse Timothy Ravinder and others of exploiting their poverty to force the conversion. Despite repeated complaints to the Police Commissioner and District Collector, no action has been taken allege the victims.

Murugeshwari, distraught over losing her livelihood and facing continued harassment, attempted suicide. While receiving treatment at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, she recorded a video pleading with authorities to take action against those responsible and to ensure justice for her family. The video has since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread attention to their plight.

Ram Kumar has urged the Coimbatore Superintendent of Police to intervene and arrest those involved under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

In her suicide note, Murugeshwari detailed the alleged harassment and coercion she faced while working at the church, which she claimed ultimately led to her removal from the job.

Letter given to Murugeshwari about her removal from the job

She accused a staff named Jayakumar of inappropriate behavior and exploitation. She wrote, “When I was working at the church, photographer Jayakumar looked at me with wrong intentions, but I did not entertain him. He would often question why I always called my husband, saying, ‘Can’t you be without seeing him?’ He once asked, ‘If I send you to do outdoor work, will you go?’ I refused, saying that my work in the church was enough for me. He persisted, saying, ‘When I talk, everyone listens, but you don’t. If there is marriage-related work, you must stay and do it.’ I told him I couldn’t stay at night, but he insisted, saying, ‘Work without fear. We will provide everything for you, but your husband shouldn’t come to the church. You must do as we say, or we will remove you from your job.’ And like they said, they did.”

Murugeshwari further alleged in her suicide note that Jayakumar repeatedly sought inappropriate favors from her, which she consistently refused. She wrote, “He continued making such demands, but I refused each time. I warned him that if he kept speaking like this, I would inform my husband. He then threatened me, saying, ‘If you tell your husband, you will not be allowed to come to work, and neither you nor your husband and three children will be allowed to enter the church.’”

In a heartfelt video, Murugeshwari shared her distressing experience, saying, “I come from a poor background. I moved to this town in 2018 and worked at the church opposite the Government hospital for five years. In 2023, they stopped my husband from working, and in 2024, they stopped me as well. They did not answer my husband it, and when I asked, they gave no response. When we went to inquire, they threatened us with the police, so we returned home in fear. Thinking that police would harm us, we went to the commissioner’s office and petitioned a letter (complaint), but they refused to accept. They directed us to the AC, but they didn’t accept it either. We even tried submitting our (complaint) through TV ads (presumably media news), but that too was ignored. Because we come from a low-income background, we were insulted, and they stopped us from working on November 4th. As a poor family, we were tormented and forced out. I went to ask for a job for a month, but they didn’t offer anything. When I asked for the original documents I had submitted we will leave but they refused to return them and threatened us with the police. Despite going to the police, the AC, and the commissioner, I received no response. We were discriminated based on have and have nots, and they insulted us. I was afraid and didn’t know what to do. I started receiving death threats and feared they would harm us. Rajendra Kumar, Packia Selvan, Charles Kumar, and Jaya Kumar warned that they would kill my husband, children, and me if we ever entered the church again. Amirtham even said we shouldn’t be allowed to re-join. What sin have we committed? They’ve told not to hire them for work. I asked, “I live in a rented house, and where can I go with my children?” but they’ve forced us out, saying ‘get out dogs.’ “

Later, Murugeshwari spoke about a particular individual named Jaya Kumar, stating,  “Jaya Kumar at many times have said many things to me like, ‘Will you come for work outside?’ and I replied, ‘I won’t go outside other than church for work.’ Then he told me, ‘Whatever work I assign to you, you must do it, and whatever I say, you must listen, or I will terminate your job.’ But I refused to comply with that as well. He then asked me to stay during the night function, and I declined that too. Finally, they told me, ‘You can work here as long as you comply, or you can leave.’ In retaliation, they removed both me and my husband from our jobs.”

Murugeshwari, in a tearful plea from her hospital bed, begged for justice, voicing her deep pain and frustration. She said, “I didn’t know what to do, so in my depression and pain, I consumed poison without thinking of my children. They are responsible for this, and I ask you to show me a way and help me get justice.”

Her note and video plea reveals the disturbing harassment and threats she endured, which ultimately led to the loss of her livelihood. She further mentioned receiving death threats and intimidation from goons, attributing the lack of police action to the negligence in addressing her complaints. Murugeswari specifically named Head Priest Rajendra Kumar, Packia Selvan, Amirtham, and Amirtha Kumar as those responsible for the mistreatment and threats she faced.

Instances Of Hindu Temples And Properties Vandalized By “Mentally Unstable” Persons

Listing several cases where police have labeled the perpetrators who attacked temples as mentally unstable.

Ancient Hindu temples and their properties have long been targets of attack, often driven by extremists from other minority groups, particularly Muslims, or by individuals influenced by ideologies aimed at dismantling the historical and cultural significance of these temples in favor of promoting a concept of ‘Khalifate’ in democratic societies. While law enforcement has intervened and culprits have been arrested, a troubling pattern emerges where these incidents are frequently dismissed as the actions of individuals deemed “mentally unstable.” This raises concerns about the frequency and severity of such attacks.

Below are several cases where police have labeled the perpetrators who attacked temple premises or properties as “mentally unstable.”

1. On 4 January 2025, Tenkasi police arrested 31-year-old Anantha Balan from Kaezhaiyapillaiyoor after he allegedly poured petrol outside the Sri Kasi Viswanathar Temple entrance and set it on fire. The incident occurred around 8 a.m., when Balan poured approximately 10 liters of petrol onto the granite floor before igniting it. The police arrested him and suggested that he may have been experiencing mental health issues.

2. On 7 February 2024, a man named Deenadayalan, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, intentionally set fire at the entrance of the Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore, Chennai. The suspect poured petrol on the ground and ignited it, causing a fire. The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., was captured on CCTV, and local police used the footage to track down the perpetrator. The suspect managed to flee before authorities arrived. Initially the police downplayed the incident stating the suspect may have been mentally unstable.

3. In June 2024, 41-year-old Muslim man M Muhamed Ayaz was arrested for allegedly dumping meat waste in the parking lot of the Koniyamman temple on Raja Street, Coimbatore, stoking communal tensions. Ayaz, from Podanur, was charged under Sections 153A, 504, and 290 of the IPC. Police reported that Ayaz took chicken and mutton waste from his brother’s meat shop and disposed of it at the temple around 9:30 AM on 1 June 2024. Ayaz was arrested on 5 June and remanded to judicial custody the next day. Investigations revealed Ayaz had done similar acts in the past, raising concerns about his intentions.

4. On the night of 26 August 2024, during Krishna Janmashtami, protests broke out in Hyderabad, Telangana, after a goddess idol at the Bhoolaxmi Temple in Rakshapuram was vandalized. The attack, which occurred around 11:30 PM, sparked outrage among locals who believed it was an attempt to disturb communal harmony ahead of the Ganesh festival. Hindu groups, including VHP and other Hindutva organizations, gathered at the temple, chanting bhajans and blocking Rakshapuram Road while demanding swift action. The temple has faced similar attacks in the past five years, with four previous FIRs filed for vandalism. In a surprising turn, a local Muslim leader handed over two suspects to the police, claiming one was mentally unstable.

5. On the morning of 14 October 2024, unrest erupted in Secunderabad, Telangana, following an incident of temple vandalism at the Muthyalamma temple in Kummariguda. Around 4:35 AM, a man allegedly entered the temple and damaged the idol of Goddess Durga. The vandalism was noticed by a local resident who raised an alarm, prompting nearby locals to apprehend the suspect. The accused, identified as 30-year-old Salman Salim Thakur, a computer engineer, was reportedly a follower of Zakir Naik and other hardline Islamists. He was also involved in similar incidents in Mumbai in 2022. After being caught by the crowd, he was beaten and handed over to the police, later being taken to the hospital in critical condition. The media claimed the islamist as mentally unstable person.

5. On 22 April 2023, a Muslim youth, identified as Mohammed Moiuddin, caused a disturbance in Hindu temples in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. He entered the Hanuman Temple at Kalyani Chowk while wearing shoes and stood in front of the idol with his pyjamas open. When the priest attempted to intervene, Moiuddin assaulted him. Afterward, he moved to another nearby temple, where he stood in front of a Goddess idol in the same manner. He then proceeded to another temple, where he urinated. The priest, alarmed by his actions, began shouting for help, attracting a crowd. Witnesses reported that the assailant was also shouting Islamic slogans during the incident.  Despite the nature of the act, the police described Moiuddin as mentally unstable. They stated that medical certificates from his family had been submitted, affirming his condition.

6. On 22 May 2023, Saravanabharathi, a 32-year-old man from Savakkatupalayam near Avinasi in Tirupur district, vandalized Nayanmar idols at the Avinashi Lingeshwarar Temple. The incident reportedly began as an attempted theft, but when the accused could not find any valuables inside the temple, he became enraged and damaged the idols. Local police later stated that the man was mentally challenged, which was severely criticized by the activists and netizens as an attempt to downplay the act.

7. On 8 August 2023, a man named Bhupathi deliberately vandalized the statues of Lord Murugan, Valli, and Deivanai at the renowned Thandayuthapani Swamy Hill Temple in Chettikulam village, Alathur taluka, Perambalur district. Locals caught him in the act and initially restrained him by tying him to a pillar. While the police initially suggested that Bhupathi was mentally ill, he was later presented before the Perambalur Criminal Justice Divisional Judge and subsequently remanded to Trichy Central Jail.

8. On 29 September 2023, a Muslim man named Javed launched a violent attack on devotees at the historic Baba Bodheshwar Mahadev temple in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. Armed with a lathi, he stormed the temple during the Bhadrapad Purnima festival, injuring eight worshippers who were praying at the revered Shivling. Among the wounded were Milan Singh, Kailash Singh, and retired revenue officer Krishna Kumar Tiwari. Following the incident, reports indicated that Javed, the attacker, was undergoing treatment for mental health issues. Javed entered a mandir in unnao and suddenly attacked the devotees with lathi in a lonewolf type terror attack; Atleast 6 hindu devotees injured.

9. On 1 December 2023, the Mahakal police in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, apprehended 60-year-old Latif Khan for urinating on Hindu temples at Ramghat in Ujjain. Khan, a retired sanitation worker from the Ujjain Municipality, was charged under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code and brought before a court, where he was subsequently remanded to jail. According to the police, he appeared to be “mentally unstable” during the initial questioning.

10. On 3 April 2022, Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi, an IIT graduate, attacked police personnel outside Gorakhnath Temple in Gorakhpur. He injured two officers with a sharp weapon. Despite his educational background, Abbasi’s family claimed he was mentally unstable, although doctors contradicted this assertion. The attack occurred just before Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was scheduled to visit the temple.

11. On the night of 27 September 2022, a man named Rameez Ahmed was caught after vandalizing a Hanuman temple in Ranchi, Jharkhand. Rameez broke the temple’s lock and damaged the idol of Bajrang Bali. Police labeled him as a “mental patient,” but local residents expressed doubts about this claim, questioning why someone with a supposed mental condition would specifically target the idol.

12. On 27 September 2022, two Muslim women vandalized a Goddess Durga idol in Hyderabad’s Khairatabad area. The women also attempted to break a statue of Mother Mary outside a church. When locals attempted to intervene, they were attacked by the women. The police later declared the women mentally ill, with one of their relatives stating that the women had been undergoing treatment for schizophrenia.

13. In October 2022, a disturbing incident occurred at a 200-year-old Mahadev temple in Rasna village, Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, when a young man was filmed urinating on the Shivling. The individual, identified as Mohammad Shoaib, carried out the act on 18 October 2022. The video quickly spread on social media, drawing widespread attention. According to the police, Shoaib was described as “mentally retarded” and a drug addict, which they claimed contributed to his actions. They stated that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident when he entered the temple and desecrated the Shivling. Despite the gravity of the incident, the police classified Shoaib’s behavior as a result of his mental state. His family provided medical certificates confirming his condition.

14. In May 2021, unknown vandals severed the head of the Karuppar Swami idol at the Theerthaandathanam area near SP Pattinam in Ramanathapuram district, at the renowned Sakalatheerthamudaiyavar temple. Despite efforts, the police were unable to identify the culprits, and it was concluded that the act may have been committed by a group of mentally challenged individuals who had been seen in the area in the days leading up to the incident.

15. In September 2021, Mohammad Khan, a Muslim man from Valikandapuram, attempted to set fire to two temple chariots in the village of V. Kalathur, near Veppanthattai in Perambalur district. At around 7 AM, he tried to break the lock on the chariot shed and ignite the chariots. Shocked villagers rushed to extinguish the flames and captured Khan, who reportedly said he set the fire “just for the sake of it” and wanted to see what was inside the chariot. In a viral video, Khan explained that the chariot had been closed for a long time due to a court order and he was curious about the reason behind it. He also claimed that he set the fire in broad daylight and would do it again if allowed. The villagers handed him over to the police, but Hindu Munnani has raised concerns that the authorities may try to downplay the incident, suggesting the man was mentally ill.

16. In October 2021, idols at the Maduraikaliamman Temple in Siruvachur, near Perambalur, were found vandalized. The damaged idols included those of Periyasamy, Chelliyamman, and other deities from the Sengamalayar Temple. Priests and devotees discovered the vandalism when they arrived at the temple on the morning of the incident. The local police began investigating the matter. The police arrested Natarajan, also known as Naathan, in connection with the vandalism at the Maduraikaliamman Temple in Siruvachur. After verifying his mental stability, the authorities declared that he was not mentally ill and subsequently jailed him for the offense.

17. In another peculiar incidents, more than 20 idols of Hindu gods along the path leading to the Viralimalai Murugan Temple in Pudukottai district have been repeatedly vandalized. The first such incident occurred in 2021, when newly erected idols of Lord Murugan and other deities were found shattered by locals. Dr. C. Vijayabhaskar, AIADMK’s MLA from Viralimalai, shared images of the damage on social media and filed a complaint with the local police, condemning the act and calling for strict action. Despite these efforts, the vandalism continues, with another incident occurring in September 2024.

In conclusion, the recurring incidents of temple desecration and attacks on Hindu religious sites, frequently attributed to individuals described as “mentally unstable,” reveal a concerning pattern of hostility toward Hinduism. These acts, perpetrated by both uneducated individuals and educated professionals, appear to stem from deep-rooted religious animosity rather than true mental instability. The tendency to dismiss these attacks as the actions of mentally ill individuals raises serious questions about the underlying motives behind such incidents.

Over Eight Chain-Snatching Incidents On Pongal Day In Tambaram Spark Fear, Including Attack On Police Commissionerate Staff

Over Eight Chain-Snatching Incidents On Pongal Day In Tambaram Spark Fear, Including Attack On Police Commissionerate Staff

On a single day during the Pongal festivities in Tambaram, more than eight chain-snatching incidents were reported, causing widespread fear among the public. While police officers from various stations gathered at the Tambaram Commissioner’s office to celebrate the festival, these robberies were carried out by unidentified individuals, unsettling the community.

One such incident occurred when a female police officer from the Chennai Commissioner’s office was targeted. CCTV footage of the incident was released, sparking panic among the public.

The chain snatching took place in a single day across several areas under the Tambaram police jurisdiction, including Selaiyur, Manimangalam, Kuduvancheri, and Maraimalainagar. These incidents created widespread fear.

Amidst this, a private event, “the Mermaid Show,” was being held at the Chennai Tambaram Railway Ground. Ishwari (56), who attended the event with her family, was targeted by the robbers as she left. While wearing an 8-sovereign gold thali chain, Ishwari held on tightly to it. Despite her efforts, the thieves managed to cut off the 5-sovereign portion and quickly fled the scene. A complaint was filed at the Selaiyur police station, and an investigation was launched.

The police received information via walkie-talkie about the robberies occurring within Tambaram’s jurisdiction, including the areas mentioned. In another incident, Indira, a staff member at the Chennai Commissioner’s office, was followed by the robbers on foot and by motorcycle when returning home to Devaraj Street, Mudichur Road. Before she could open her gate, the robbers snatched her 5.5-sovereign gold thali chain and fled. CCTV footage of this attack was also released.

In response to the information from the police control room, the investigation was rapidly intensified, and checkpoints were established. When the robbers realized they were being pursued, they abandoned their vehicle, a Pulsar 220, at the Gandhi Salai junction on Tambaram GST Road and fled on foot. The police have seized the car and are continuing their investigation.

The Pongal celebrations at the Tambaram Commissioner’s office, which saw officers across all police stations participate, temporarily decreased police presence at key security points. The robbers took advantage of this gap to carry out their series of snatchings.

Three special teams have now been formed to track down the robbers, and an intensive investigation is underway. The chain-snatching incidents, particularly the attack on the female officer from the Chennai Commissioner’s office, have caused widespread fear and concern among the public.

Heavy Police Deployment And Barricades Erected To Prevent Animal Sacrifice By Islamists At Sacred Thiruparankundram Temple Hilltop

Heavy Police Deployment And Barricades To Prevent Animal Sacrifice By Islamists At Thiruparankundram

Over a hundred police officers and barricades were deployed at the Thiruparankundram Murugan Temple Hills after a large group of Islamists attempted to celebrate a ‘feast’ by bringing goats and roosters to the hilltop. They claimed the sacred Hindu temple site as ‘Sikandar Hills.’ When the police intervened to prevent the group from entering the hill path, tensions escalated as the Islamists raised slogans, resulting in a brief scuffle. This incident heightened tensions in Madurai.

Thiruparankundram, is a sacred site for Hindus, renowned for its famous Murugan Temple. This temple is regarded as the first of the six holy abodes (Arupadai Veedu) of Lord Muruga, making the hill a revered spiritual destination for millions of devotees.

On 27 December 2024, Madurai police intervened to detain a group of Islamists who attempted to bring goats and roosters to a hilltop dargah in Thiruparankundram, Madurai district, for ritual sacrifice. Syed Abu Dahir, 53, from Malaiyadipatti in Rajapalayam, arrived with his family, a goat, and two roosters for the ceremony. However, authorities stopped the group at the base of the hill, informing them that taking livestock up the hill was prohibited. This led to a protest by over 20 local Muslims from Thiruparankundram, who gathered at the hill’s steps in solidarity with the family.

A week later, on 5 January 2025, another large group of Muslim protesters gathered at Thiruparankundram Hills, demanding permission to offer prayers at the mosque located uphill. The police denied their request, leading to heightened tensions and a brief scuffle between the protesters and law enforcement. Eventually, the police detained the protesters.

Against this backdrop, on 17 January 2025, the Santhanakoodu Festival was held at a nearby dargah. Later that evening, a series of social media posts began circulating, claiming that an “Equality Feast” (Samabanthi Bhojan) would be held on 18 January at the hilltop dargah, where goats and roosters would allegedly be sacrificed. Fearing the potential for communal tension, the police took precautionary measures by setting up barricades and inspecting individuals heading to the Sikandhar Dargah on the hilltop, checking for any meat, goats, or roosters being brought along.

When the dargah Jamath was informed that they could only engage in prayers and not sacrifice animals at the hilltop, members of the Jamath and other Islamists protested against the police. They raised slogans, causing a stir in the region.

VCK Cadres Allegedly Vandalize Houses In Political Enmity; Three Injured In Perambalur’s Thirumandurai Area

VCK Cadres Vandalize Houses In Political Enmity; Three Injured In Perambalur

Residents of Thirumandurai in Perambalur district accused Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) cadres of vandalizing their houses following a clash between two local factions. Five houses were reportedly damaged, and three individuals were injured in the incident, requiring hospital treatment.

The conflict allegedly stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the nephew of VCK leader Thirumavalavan and the AIADMK union secretary, with tensions exacerbated by animosity related to local body elections. According to reports, a few days earlier, supporters of AIADMK leader Ilayaraja allegedly attacked a cleaner, believed to be a supporter of Selvamani, in Thirumandurai. In retaliation, Ilayaraja’s supporters are said to have vandalized five houses of Selvamani’s supporters using sticks and sickles. Subsequently, Selvamani’s supporters reportedly retaliated, attacking four homes in Ilayaraja’s locality.

Locals claim that VCK members, led by a relative of party chief Thirumavalavan, orchestrated the house vandalism. Residents allege that the attacks are part of ongoing party-related tensions and that the police have not taken adequate action to address the situation, with some accusing law enforcement of ignoring their complaints.

One of the victims, speaking to the press, said, “Thirumavalavan’s nephew, out of jealousy for us garlanding MGR on his birthday today, came and vandalized our houses. This has been going on for the last ten to fifteen years. Do we have any land dispute with them? No; it’s all due to party differences. Thirumavalavan’s nephew, who lives in the town, is behind all this. Today, he came, broke everything, and left.  All were under the influence of weed, hitting women. Thirumavalavan should come here to this town and witness this.”

“Fascist Approach”: How Madras High Court Whipped And Gave Belt Treatment To DMK Govt In ‘Savukku’ Shankar Bail Case

Fascist Approach: How Madras High Court Whipped In 'Savukku' Shankar Bail Case

On 17 January 2025, the Madras High Court expressed concern about the growing trend of filing criminal cases against individuals for expressing their opinions on public matters, calling it indicative of a fascist mindset. The court raised alarms over the increasing practice of arresting people for making certain statements on social and mainstream media.

Judicial Lashing Of the Case’s Foundation

Justice Swaminathan meticulously dismantled the legal basis of the charges. The petitioner was accused under Sections 221, 222, and 353(1)(b) and (2) of the BNS Act, 2023. The court highlighted the glaring inconsistencies and overreach in these charges:

1. Misuse of Section 221:
The judge stated unequivocally that Section 221, which pertains to obstructing a public servant, was misapplied. The petitioner’s YouTube comments could not be construed as “deliberate stoppage” of the investigation. The judge quipped that the investigating officer appeared to have “his own dictionary,” twisting the meaning of obstruction to suit the narrative.

2. Misapplication of Section 222:
Section 222 involves a person’s legal obligation to assist a public servant. Justice Swaminathan ruled that since the petitioner believed the case to be false, he was under no obligation to assist the police. Therefore, invoking this section was baseless.

3. Perversity of Section 353:
The court labeled the application of Section 353 as “nothing short of perversity.” It rejected the claim that the petitioner’s video caused public mischief or fear, asserting that criticism of a police investigation falls within the ambit of free speech.

Slamming The Police And Government Actions

Justice Swaminathan’s observations extended beyond the legal technicalities, targeting the systemic misuse of power:

1. Erosion of Rule of Law:
The judge condemned the state for resorting to successive cases and preventive detention to silence the petitioner, terming it an act of “hounding.” He pointed to the state’s “scant regard for rule of law” and described the petitioner’s arrest as “unfortunate” and motivated by malafides.

Justice Swaminathan’s condemnation of the police and state government reached its zenith when he labeled the petitioner’s arrest as motivated by “petty reasons” and “evident malafides.” The judge unequivocally “condemned the respondent” for acting with blatant disregard for the rule of law.

2. Judiciary’s Responsibility to Stem the Rot:
He urged magistrates and sessions courts to play an active role in curbing such misuse of the law, emphasizing that the simplest remedy is to deny remand in such frivolous cases.

3. Democratic Ideals Under Attack:

Justice G.R. Swaminathan remarked, “Democracy is all about opinions. In the market place of ideas, only those that have substance will stand. If a opinion is ill founded, it will fail in the long run. To foist a case against a person for making a certain assertion is indicative of a fascist approach. The target of a verbal attack can be any person. No one can be a holy cow. Prosecution is one thing. Arrest is entirely another.”

The judge also recalled the Supreme Court’s repeated warnings to the police against making unnecessary arrests. He noted, “It seems these warnings have not been heeded. Arrests should only happen when violence is incited; otherwise, there’s no justification for police intervention.”

While acknowledging that police may sometimes act in bad faith, the judge emphasized the role of judicial magistrates and sessions courts in curbing such practices. He suggested that judicial officers could refuse to grant remand after a suspect’s arrest. If a suspect’s only offense was expressing an opinion or making comments, the trial courts should adopt a lenient stance when considering bail applications.

Justice Swaminathan expressed profound disbelief at the sequence of events that led to the petitioner’s judicial custody and subsequent denial of bail by the lower court. He remarked: “I fail to understand as to how he was remanded to judicial custody in the first place. Even more surprising is the denial of bail by the Court below.

The judge observed an alarming trend of criminal cases being registered against individuals merely for expressing opinions. While the police cannot be preemptively restrained from acting with malice, the judiciary holds a crucial responsibility to intervene. He emphasized that judicial magistrates and sessions courts must refuse unwarranted remand and grant bail when allegations are trivial and baseless.

The judge made these comments in response to the remand of YouTuber A. Shankar, also known as “Savukku” Shankar, who had been arrested by the Central Crime Branch police in Chennai for allegedly spreading misinformation about a land fraud case. Justice Swaminathan expressed surprise over the remand, stating, “I don’t understand why he was remanded in the first place. Even more puzzling is the denial of bail. The petitioner is not asking for the FIR to be quashed, only for bail.

Justice Swaminathan further criticized the state’s actions against Shankar, noting that he had been detained twice under the Goondas Act. When the Supreme Court intervened, the state circumvented its orders by filing additional cases against him. The judge condemned this behavior, calling it a violation of the rule of law and demonstrating the malice of the police involved.

After ordering Shankar’s release on a bond of ₹10,000, Justice Swaminathan stated, “I find the criminal case against the petitioner to be entirely unjustified.” The judge also questioned how Shankar’s interview on his YouTube channel could have obstructed the police investigation, sarcastically remarking that the investigating officer must have a unique definition of “obstruction” tailored to the convenience of the police.

A Stark Warning to the State

This judgment is a glaring reminder of the judiciary’s role as a bulwark against authoritarian overreach. Justice Swaminathan’s words resonate beyond the legal corridors, emphasizing that freedom of speech is sacrosanct and that no government should stifle dissent under the guise of maintaining law and order.

This case not only exposed the DMK government’s alleged vendetta-driven governance but also reaffirmed the judiciary’s commitment to upholding constitutional values.

TN BJP Files Complaint Against Those Who Spread Fake Letter Of H Raja

Karthik Gopinath, State Vice President of the Tamil Nadu BJP IT Wing, submitted a petition to the Chennai City Commissioner’s office requesting action against individuals who circulated a fake letter on social media that falsely claimed senior BJP leader and Convenor of the Tamil Nadu BJP Co-ordination Committee H Raja had written to the central leadership expressing dissatisfaction with the state BJP president, K Annamalai.

On 17 January 2025, BJP leader Gopinath filed a complaint against Gayathri Raguram, Deputy Secretary of the AIADMK State Women’s Wing, Dhivya Marunthiah, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Congress OBC Wing, and journalist Damodharan Prakash (also known as Nakheeran Prakash) for circulating a fake, morphed letter. The Chennai Commissioner’s office has acknowledged the complaint and will initiate an investigation.

This ongoing spread of misinformation by Dravidianists comes despite Raja’s clear clarification that the letter in question is fabricated and morphed. Yet, they have continued to propagate the falsehoods. On 16 January 2025, Raja clarified via his official x account that, “Fake news is being spread on social media by anti-social elements to tarnish my reputation. I want to clarify that legal action will be taken against the individual responsible for creating and disseminating this false information. Action will also be taken against whoever is involved in spreading this misinformation.”
