Is this the real reason for Rajdeep’s oust from India Today? Rashtrapati Bhavan sends stinging letter to channel head

In a strongly worded letter to the India Today Group, the Office of the President of India lashed out at the channel and its consulting editor Rajdeep Sardesai over the unwarranted controversy on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s portrait that was unveiled by President Ram Nath Kovind recently.

The letter written by the President’s Press Secretary Ajay Kumar Singh and addressed to Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of India Today Group Aroon Purie, came down heavy for not verifying the facts and throwing wild accusations for political gains.

“I am writing to you with reference to a needless and avoidable – rather shameful – controversy in which a section of journalists, including some from the India Today group, dragged the Rashtrapati Bhavan for motives that are not clear to us.”, the letter read.

It further stated that how a section of journalists including Rajdeep Sardesai had peddled that the portrait was not that of Netaji’s but a Bengali actor named Prosenjit Chatterjee without verifying the facts.

“The regrettable part is that senior journalists of your Group did not bother to check the facts. Before making a serious claim like this, they could have checked with any member of Netaji’s family (for example Mr. C.K. Bose, who clarified on Twitter that the portrait was indeed of the great leader himself), or with the actor himself (who too put the record straight) as well as with the Rashtrapati Bhavan itself. They did not do any of the fact checks do any of the basic fact checks and joined the ranks with those who were throwing wild accusations for political gains. In gleefully ridiculing this high Constitutional office, they not only discredited their professional ethics but also cast a shadow on the office of the President of India.” the letter stated.

The letter further stated that this was not a momentary lapse of judgement or a forgivable slip of the pen and added that these journalists merely deleted their tweets without owning up to the blunder.

“I believe this is unpardonable conduct for the individuals involved as well as for the platform from which they seek to draw legitimacy. This episode has caused deep distress at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and we are forced to review our engagements with the India Today group.”, the letter concluded.

On January 23, the President of India Ram Nath Kovind unveiled a portrait of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at Rashtrapati Bhavan to commemorate his 125th birth anniversary celebrations.

Soon, a section of journalists and several leaders from the opposition jumped in to say that the person in the portrait was that of a Bengali actor named Prosenjit Chatterjee who had played Bose in his biopic.

Trinamool Congress MP who is known for her loud speeches in Parliament, criticized about how the President donated ₹5 lakh to the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya but ‘honoured Netaji’ by unveiling a portrait of actor Prosenjit.

“God save India (because this government certainly can’t)” she wrote.

However, she later deleted this tweet.

Many other ‘journalists’ too took a dig at the portrait of the freedom fighter unveiled by the President. Sagarika Ghose, wife of another ‘journalist’ Rajdeep Sardesai called the portait as ‘fake Netaji’. Just like his wife, Rajdeep Sardesai too tweeted saying that the President could have put up an original portrait of Netaji adding that the one unveiled by President was the picture of actor Prosenjit.

Barkha Dutt, Swati Chaturvedi, and Roshini Singh who are known for being against the BJP too took at dig at the Hon’ble President of India.

However, their joy was short lived as Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s grandnephew Chandra Kumar Bose, busted the lies peddled by these personalities.

Chandra Kumar Bose posted the picture original photograph of Netaji based on which portrait was drawn by Paresh Maity.

Following this, many on social media lashed out at these ‘journalists’ and leaders for doing unwarranted politics over Netaji. Some alleged that the misinformation was peddled by the Congress IT Cell.

Temple land worth ₹170 crore reclaimed, was previously used as mosque’s parking lot

The Agastheeswarar Temple in Nungambakkam, Chennai owned around 350 grounds of land surrounding it. Now, the temple reportedly has only 93 ground under it.  The hereditary temple trustee had misused the Chennai City Tenants Protection Act and had sold 138 grounds of temple land without obtaining any official permission as mandated by Section 34. The remaining were either encroached or taken over by the government.

Srinivasan had leased 15 grounds of land belonging to the temple and had been running a school.  Later, he seized the land abusing the provisions of the Chennai City Tenant Protection Act. The temple administration sued Srinivasan as he did not pay the money that he owed the temple from the lease. Despite the court ruling in 2007 that the land belonged to the temple, Srinivasan did not return the land. The Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department is also said to have been acting in favour of Srinivasan. He is said to have closed the school he was running on the land and had converted into a commercial complex which was also allegedly used as a parking lot for the nearby mosque. Also, he had used the land as a collateral to obtain ₹64 crores as loan from State Bank of India.

In light of this, Mohan Raj, son of Thyagi Nellai Jebamani, filed a case in the court to recover the property of the Nungambakkam Agastheeswarar temple. Following this, the Chennai High Court ordered the HR&CE Commissioner to recover the assets sold outside Section 34. Following this, the HR&CE Department has started taking action to recover the property of the Nungambakkam Agastheeswarar temple.

Mohan Raj is a retired police officer who was instrumental in the arrest of the Rajiv Gandhi Assassination convicts, including Saanthan. Mohan is now earning appreciations for helping the temple recover the land.

Madras High Court upholds conversion of Christian woman to Hinduism

Madras High Court upholds Christian woman's conversion to Hinduism

The Madras High Court in a significant ruling has upheld a “shuddhi ceremony” conducted by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) to convert a Christian woman to Hinduism. The high court has upheld her selection and appointment as a junior graduate teacher under the Scheduled Caste (SC) category.

Justice R Suresh Kumar, pointing to the relevant government order which allowed such conversion or reconversion and resultant benefits, said, “The Vishwa Hindu Parishad, one of the reputed and internationally acclaimed organisations for Hindu religion, which is constantly and steadfastly propagating the greatness and richness of Hinduism and Hindu rites and customs in this country, had performed the necessary pooja called ‘Shuddhi Satangu’ on November 1, 1998. The name of the petitioner, which was originally Daisy Flora, has been changed into A Megalai. On completion of the pooja by pandits of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, it has been declared that she had converted from Christianity to Hinduism.”

Justice Suresh Kumar also referred to the government order deciding to extend benefits available to SC candidates, to those who had converted from Christianity to Hinduism or those who reconverted to Hinduism, provided the community accepted such conversion/re-conversion.

Daisy Flora, who is now Megalai, was born into a Christian (Paraiyar) community and subsequently got married to a man named Vanavan who belonged to the Hindu (Paraiyar) community. Since her conversion, she was given the SC community certificate.

The court came to her rescue when she participated in the selection process for the junior graduate assistant but her application was rejected on the grounds that she was not entitled to the benefit as she was a reconvert.

However, the interim order of the high court in March 2005 allowed her to be appointed to the post and later re-designated her BT assistant (science).

Biden approves Boeing’s offer of 114 F-15EX fighters to India

Feature Image Credits: Boeing

Aerospace and defence major Boeing has received the licence from President Joseph Biden to offer its F-15EX fighter jet to India, reports Times of India. By approving the offer, Biden gives Boeing a huge opportunity to bag a $18 billion deal by selling 114 fighter jets to the Indian Air Force (IAF).

By giving Boeing the licence, the company can directly engage with the IAF about the fighter jet’s capabilities. According to Ankur Kanaglekar, director of India Fighters Lead, Boeing Defence, Space & Security, the company has already begun to do that in a small way. Discussions over the F-15EX have also taken place between the two governments earlier, Kanaglekar added.

The procurement of 114 advanced fighters for the IAF is being called the “mother of all arms deals”. Another US-based defence and aerospace major, Lockheed Martin, has also jumped into the race by offering its F-21 fighter jet to the IAF. Lockheed Martin has gone one step further by proposing to build the plane in India, which some defence experts believe would lead to India to develop its indigenous defence capability.

However, French aerospace major Dassault, which makes the Rafale fighter jets recently inducted by India into its air force, is also in the fray along with Swedish defence major SAAB. The latter is offering up its Gripen fighter jet in a bid to win the deal for 114 fighter jets estimated to be worth more than $18 billion.

Italy stalls sale of missiles to UAE and Saudi Arabia

Pictured: Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio

Italy has halted the sale of thousands of missiles to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia, Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said on Friday. He also said that Italy is committed to restoring peace in war-ravaged Yemen and protecting human rights in the region.

“This is an act that we considered necessary, a clear message of peace coming from our country. For us, the respect of human rights is an unbreakable commitment,” Di Maio said in a statement.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE are part of an Arab coalition that has been engaged in a drawn-out military conflict with the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen. The war, which has been fought since 2015, is seen as a proxy war between Riyadh and Tehran. According to the United Nations, Yemen is the world’s largest humanitarian crisis, with 80% of its people in need of aid.

The Italian Network for Peace and Disarmament said that Rome’s decision would block the sale of around 12,700 missiles to Saudi Arabia.

The stalled sales were part of a total allotment of 20,000 missiles agreed in 2016 under a centre-left government led by Matteo Renzi, the disarmament group said. The sales were worth more than €400 million, or $485 million.

Renzi triggered a government collapse in Italy this week by pulling his Italia Viva party out of the coalition. He is facing fire for recently visiting Saudi Arabia, where he reportedly told the Saudi crown prince that he saw Saudi Arabia as the site of a “New Renaissance”.

The new U.S. administration under President Joe Biden has also halted some pending arms sales. This move could potentially affect Washington’s allies in the Middle East.

Israel treating bomb blast near its embassy in Delhi as terrorism

Featured Image: Israel embassy in Delhi | Credits: IANS

Israel is treating Friday’s bomb blast near its embassy as an act of terrorism, an Israeli official told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

The explosion, caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), on Friday evening did not injure anyone. Window-panes and windscreens of a few cars in the vicinity were damaged in the incident. The embassy or any other buildings were not damaged either.

“Initial impressions suggest a mischievous attempt to create a sensation”, according to the Delhi police.

India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar, who spoke with his Israeli counterpart about the blast, has said that India is taking the incident seriously. No effort will be spared to find the culprits, he added.

“Spoke just now to Israeli FM @Gabi_Ashkenazi about the explosion outside the Israeli Embassy. We take this very seriously. Assured him of the fullest protection for the Embassy and Israeli diplomats. Matter is under investigation and no effort will be spared to find the culprits”, Jaishankar tweeted.

An alert has been issued at all airports, important installations and government buildings in view of Friday’s blast. Enhanced security measures have been put in place. According to sources, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has been briefed by Director, IB and CP, Delhi.

The Indian capital is also on a security alert because of the farmers’ protests and this week’s related riots against the government’s agricultural reforms.
