Days After Jos Alukkas CEO Met CM Vijay, TVK Govt Announces ₹756-Crore Gold Ring Scheme Despite Saying No New Schemes For Now

The TVK government’s announcement of the ‘Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam’, under which newborns delivered in government hospitals will receive a one-gram gold ring, has drawn attention after it came just days after Jos Alukkas Managing Director John Alukkas met Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

John Alukkas, CEO and Managing Director of the Thrissur-headquartered jewellery chain Jos Alukkas, recently shared photographs on social media of his meeting with Chief Minister Vijay. In his post, John Alukkas described Vijay as “an old friend, now Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay,” and said the meeting reflected how relationships strengthen over time, highlighting friendship, leadership and cherished memories.

The meeting has also revived interest in the long-standing association between Vijay and the jewellery brand. In 2010, Jos Alukkas appointed Vijay as its brand ambassador as part of a nationwide rebranding campaign titled “Ponnil Teertha Bandham” (Relationships as Good as Gold). At the time, Jos Alukkas Managing Director John Alukka had said the company chose Vijay to help establish a distinct brand identity as it pursued expansion plans.

Less than a week after the recent meeting, the TVK government announced the launch of the Thaaimaaman Thanga Mothira Thittam, one of its election promises.

According to the government, children born in Tamil Nadu government hospitals from 22 June 2026 onwards to families with permanent residence in the state will receive a one-gram gold ring under the scheme. The government has allocated ₹755.83 crore for its implementation.

The scheme is scheduled to be formally launched by Chief Minister Vijay on 15 September 2026, coinciding with the birth anniversary of former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

In its official announcement, the government stated that the scheme formed part of its commitment to improving maternal and child welfare and said all children born in government hospitals from 22 June onwards would be eligible.

The timing of the announcement, however, has prompted questions from political observers and sections of the public over the government’s priorities.

During the presentation of the recent White Paper on Tamil Nadu’s finances, Finance Minister Marie Wilson had stated that the government would not introduce new welfare schemes immediately owing to the state’s financial situation, while assuring that existing schemes would continue.

Against that backdrop, the announcement of a new ₹755.83-crore gold ring scheme has raised questions over what prompted the government to prioritise its rollout when several major election promises remain unimplemented.

Among the pending commitments are the promised ₹2,500 monthly financial assistance for women, the six free LPG cylinders annually scheme and the proposed free bus travel scheme, all of which were key assurances made by the TVK during its election campaign but are yet to be launched.

The proximity between the Chief Minister’s meeting with the head of one of India’s largest jewellery retailers and the subsequent announcement of a gold-based welfare scheme has also become a subject of discussion on social media.

The sequence of events has intensified scrutiny over the government’s policy priorities about why a new welfare scheme has been fast-tracked despite earlier statements indicating that new schemes would be deferred until the state’s financial position improves.
