Soon Indians might say bye-bye to Google Maps as ISRO and MapmyIndia team up for Atmanirbhar mapping solution

MapmyIndia

In another step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and digital mapping and location-based deep-tech company MapmyIndia on Friday (12 February) will jointly offer a fully indigenous, mapping portal and geospatial services.

At present, the most widely used digital map is Google Maps and with this indigenous service, Indians will no longer have to rely on a foreign service.

By combining the power of MapmyIndia’s digital maps and technologies with ISRO’s catalogue of satellite imagery and earth observation data, the end-user maps, apps and services are expected to be a much better, more detailed and comprehensive mapping solution for Indians. The company also hailed their indigenous mapping solution as privacy-centric and “hyper-local”.

“This partnership with ISRO heralds a new dawn of Aatmanirbhar Bharat in the strategic area of maps and geospatial technologies,” Rohan Verma, CEO & Executive Director, MapmyIndia, said in a statement.

“You don’t need Google Maps/Earth any longer”, Verma said in the headline in an article on LinkedIn.

“MapmyIndia’s maps cover all 7.5 lakh villages, 7500+ cities at street and building-level, connected by all 63 lakh kilometers of road network pan India and within cities, in total providing maps for an unparalleled 3+ crore places across India,” the company said in the statement.

The company also made it very clear that as a local Indian company, its maps will only reflect the true sovereignty of the country, depicting India’s borders as per government of India.

Indian scientists and academicians will now have access to the best satellite imagery, earth observation data, digital map data and advanced geospatial technologies. Also, users will have access to various map-based analytics and insights about the weather condition, pollution, agricultural output, land-use changes, flood and landslide disasters, among others, the company said.

US Christian missionary jailed for sexually abusing underage girls in Kenya, his wife gave pills to orphanage girls to prevent pregnancy

61 year old Christian missionary Gregory Dow, who ran Dow Family Children’s Home near Boito in Kenya, was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison for abusing four underage girls in Kenya in his care and was directed to pay $16,000 in restitution, reports Hindu Post.

Gregory Dow hails from Pennsylvania, USA, and he operated an orphanage funded by the U.S. Churches and faith-based groups in Kenya for almost a decade.

He left Kenya in 2017, after authorities began investigating allegations of sexual abuse, confirmed Federal US prosecutors.

Michael Driscoll, Special Agent in charge of the FBI Philadelphia Division, said in a statement, “He abused four girls, including two who were only 11 when the abuse began. If he thought no one would care because these were underprivileged Black children he victimized, this investigation and today’s sentence have most emphatically proved him wrong”.

In his plea agreement, Dow admitted that he had abused four girls multiple times from October 2013 to September 2017 and the FBI agent Driscoll called Gregory Dow, “the proverbial wolf in sheep’s clothing,”.

However, the most disturbing aspect is that Dow in 1996 had pled guilty in the case of a sexual abuse in Iowa and received two years’ probation, He was ordered to register as a sex offender for a decade by the U.S. attorney’s office.

But he was still able to operate an orphanage where poor and vulnerable children will be in his care.

Dow’s ultimate fall from the pulpit came when a Kenyan woman named Margaret Ruto who worked as a nurse in the US had returned to the area near the orphanage and heard the story of sexual abuse from the girls under Dow’s care.

Taking down the testimonies of the abused girls, it was established that Dow had sexually abused at least four teenage girls between 2013 and 2017.

But what is even more enraging is the active participation of Dow’s wife who also runs the Home with him.

According to Ruto,“The defendant’s wife even transported the victims to a medical clinic to have birth control devices implanted into their arms, which allowed Dow to perpetrate his crimes without fear of impregnating his victims”.

Acting U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams said, “Under the guise of faith-based charity work benefiting orphaned children, Gregory Dow travelled halfway around the world to prey on incredibly vulnerable victims,” said  “His crimes are nearly incomprehensible in their depravity.”

Sexual abuse cases by Christian missionaries in India

In India too, sexual abuse of children in Christian run orphanages is quite rampant and one of the most sickening cases was that of the Grace Home, run by Pastor Jacob John.

Under his care, 53 children from North-Eastern states like Manipur and Nagaland were rescued by Rajasthan Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Unfortunately, 4 children died due to the torture they had to endure and a number of minor girls were sexually exploited, with one getting pregnant.

What is even more sickening is that Jacob John also sexually abused many children who suffered from severe physical deformities and mental retardation. However, in India, it is very difficult to arrest them, let alone convict such people, due to the clout enjoyed by the Christian missionaries.

In another case similar to Gregory Dow’s, a 68 year old British citizen named John Patrick Bridge, who was running an orphanage in Odisha’s western district of Jharsuguda, was arrested for sexually abusing a minor boy in his shelter home.

In Tamil Nadu, a Christian preacher named Sam Jaisunder belonging to Scripture Union, a Christian missionary group which preaches to children in schools, has been accused of sending inappropriate messages to teenage girls.

Public alarmed as sewage turns red in Erode

Officials belonging to the TNPCB are investigating a complaint lodged by the public in Erode, who claimed that the water that was flowing in the city’s sewers had suddenly turned red.

There are numerous dye mills and tanneries operating in Agraharam, Periyasemur, Choolai and Thanneerbandal Palayam areas of Erode district. Upon noticing that the sewage water had suddenly turned red, alarmed citizens of the district had lodged a complaint to the government officials citing that the water was that was flowing in the sewer in the area had turned red in colour, and beseeched an immediate investigation into this matter.

Pollution Control Board officials who arrived at the scene looked into this bizarre phenomena and inquired with the dyeing units regarding the same. The discolouration was revealed to have been caused due to the dumping of the dye wastewater, that was found to be let out by the textile units in the region, under the bridge at the waterfront, close to where the sewers started. It is noteworthy that 30 dye mills were sealed following the recent mixing of dye wastewater into a canal in Erode.

After realizing that these factory owners were in direct violation of the norms of the government regarding environmental protection while disposal of their wastewater, over 30 factories were shut down and sealed close by the TNPCB authorities.

Auto driver’s daughter becomes the runner up of Miss India

Manya Singh, the daughter of a modest auto driver, has made history by emerging as the VLCC Femina Miss India 2020 Runner-up. She hails from Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar and came only second to Manasa Varanasi, an engineer from Telangana who has been crowned Miss India.

“My blood, sweat, and tears have amalgamated into the courage to pursue my dreams,” she said in a post shared by the official Instagram handle of Miss India back in December.  The caption read, “I’ve spent numerous nights without food and sleep. I’ve spent many afternoons walking for miles on end. Being a rickshaw driver’s daughter, I never had the opportunity to attend school as I had to start working in my teens. All the clothes I had were hand-me-downs. I yearned for books, but luck wasn’t in my favour. Eventually, my parents mortgaged whatever little jewellery my mother had to ensure that I paid my exam fees in order to earn a degree.”

Manya had worked two jobs ― as a dishwasher in the evenings while she also worked at a call centre in the nights ― in order to pay for her education. “I’ve walked hours to reach places so I could save the rickshaw fare,” she added.

Myanmar’s new cybersecurity bill adds fuel to protests against coup

In addition to the recent army coup by the military in Myanmar that effectively sidelined the country’s celebrated leader Aung San Suu Kyi, their new draconian cybersecurity bill is now causing a stir for all the wrong reasons. As tense situations prevail throughout the country’s capital, the new bill is only adding fuel to the already raging fire amongst the public.

This new bill gives the army the authority to ban any content that reflected against the sentiments of the army, and even “permanently undermine internet freedom in the country.”

The new rules would also require providers to hand over information to authorities “under any existing law” and give the state powers to intervene in cases that threaten Myanmar’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity”.

The 36 pages outlining the proposed laws were given to mobile operators and telecoms license holders for comment on Tuesday ― just over a week after the army overthrew the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi, a statement from the protesters to Reuters said. “The so-called bill includes clauses which violate human rights, including the rights to freedom of expression, data protection and privacy, and other democratic principles and human rights in the online space,” said the statement, signed by more than 150 organizations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he took the oath of office in 2019 after winning the Lok Sabha elections, had said that the bureaucracy had created a lot of hindrance for him and he will not let them get away in his second term.

Living up to this promise, the Modi government has shown the door to as many as 340 officers between July 2014 and December 2020 for non-performance or being ‘deadwood’ under Fundamental Rule 56(J) and other similar provisions, reports Times of India.

The Fundamental Rule 56(J) allows the government to send employees on compulsory retirement.

Between 2014 and 2020, under the said rule, the government made 171 Group-A central government officers to retire, which include All India Services (AIS) officers.

Other than these, the rule’s provisions have also been invoked against 169 Group-B officers employed under different ministries and departments, as per details shared by Minister of Personnel Jitendra Singh in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.

The government also made it very clear that all vacancies in respective ministries and departments and their attached or subordinate offices must be fulfilled in a timebound manner.

200 ft bridge to be constructed in flood-affected Chamoli to reestablish connectivity

A portion of the Nanda Devi glacier which broke off in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on February 07, 2021, triggered a deluge in the Dhauli Ganga River washing away hydroelectric stations and trapped many workers. The mid-day sudden flood in the Dhauli Ganga, Rishi Ganga and Alaknanda rivers, all intricately linked tributaries of the Ganga, triggered widespread panic and large-scale devastation in the high mountain areas.

The flash flood also washed away a 90-metre span RCC bridge on Joshimath-Malari road located just downstream of the Rishi Ganga Hydel project and approximately two kilometres upstream of the Tapovan Hydel project, which was the only link to the Niti border. The bridge’s destruction has stranded more than 13 border villages in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has quickly swung into action for rescue and rehabilitation work by inducting more than 100 Vehicles/Equipment and plants, which include about 15 Heavy Earth Moving Equipment like Hydraulic Excavators, Dozers, JCBs, Wheel Loaders, etc. The BRO has also brought in critical equipment with the help of Indian Air Force. Almost 200 personnel of 21 BRTF of Project Shivalik have been deployed for rescue and rehabilitation purposes.

After initial recce, the BRO has started work for re-establishing connectivity on all required fronts. The site is very challenging due to a steep cliff on the far bank and 25-30 metre-high debris and muck on the other side. However, the BRO has overcome these challenges and on the fourth day cleared and established a path for construction of the bridge abutment. The BRO is working round the clock to re-establish connectivity at the earliest by launching a bailey bridge of 200 feet. The BRO is also assisting Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) & National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in rescue operations. Several BRO teams part of Project Shivalik are deployed in the area for relief operations.

Dharmapuri DMK MP peddles half truths in Parliament

DMK MP from Dharmapuri Dr. Senthilkumar peddled half truths on the floor of the Parliament, saying that the Public Distribution System (PDS) in Tamil Nadu was introduced by C.N. Annadurai.

Speaking on the budget, the Dharmapuri DMK MP said that the PDS system and the ‘rice subsidy’ was introduced during the time of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai.

However, the PDS system was first introduced in 1964. It should be noted that the DMK first came to power only in 1967.

A study on the effectiveness of Public Distribution System in Tamil Nadu submitted by Dr. S. Nakkiran of TBML College to the Planning Commission of India notes that the Government of Tamil Nadu has been implementing PDS since the year 1964. In 1964, M. Bhaktavatsalam was the Chief Minister.

The scheme was back then named as Village Shop Programme introduced with the intention of having one shop in every village in order to ensure the supply of essential items to the people. The scheme was subsequently converted into PDS to provide essential commodities to the public at subsidized rates, both in rural and urban areas.

Karunanidhi, after taking office in 1996, introduced the ‘universal’ PDS which has been in operation where certain items were given to all families with a ration card. Karunanidhi is also credited with founding the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, the organization that is responsible for providing food grains and other commodities under Public Distribution System through ration shops.

PM Modi condoles Saathur fire accident

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the 12 people killed in a fire at a firecracker factory near Sattur in Virudhunagar district.

“The firecracker factory accident in Virudhunagar is saddening. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased.” he said in a statement. “I hope the injured will recover soon. My deepest condolences to the families of the victims. 2 lakhs will be given to the families of the victims and 50,000 rupees will be given to the families of the injured,” he added, in a tweet in Tamil.

Earlier on Friday, a firecracker factory called Mariyammal Fireworks at Achchankulam, owned by one Sakthivel and operating near Sattur in Virudhunagar district, had caught fire. More than a hundred workers were employed in the factory. While the workers were on duty, there was a sudden fire at around 1:30 PM.

Twelve people were killed in the accident. Their bodies were charred beyond recognition, and so, their identities are yet to be revealed. Since the remaining victims in the hospital are at a highly critical state, it is expected that the death toll is likely to go up.

“Twenty-two workers were admitted to the government hospital at Sattur. All of them have suffered less than 50% burns,” said District Revenue Officer, R. Mangalaramasubramanian.

Congress high command Rahul Gandhi had also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.
