Muslim leaders in the state of Maharashtra have written to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray seeking relaxations in restrictions during the time of Ramzan. The request letter was sent by the Raza Academy, an Indian Muslim organisation. The request comes amid a surge in the rising cases of coronavirus in that state and the re-imposition of night curfews and lockdown-like restrictions.

The Raza Academy is a puritanical Islamic organisation that promotes Islamic beliefs through publications and research. Leaders from this group met with government officials and said that they want relaxations during Ramzan for the celebrations.

The letter reads, “As we are all going through the worst phases of the pandemic, we at the onset assure you of all the cooperation needed in tackling the virus and its spread in the state. However, we feel that lockdowns are not a measure to tackle this strange disease. On the contrary, lockdown causes more trouble to the majority of people in the state who lose their daily earnings and end up in dire circumstances”.

In 2020, when the government had announced a lockdown, Raza academy had demanded that the Iftar and other Islamic religious functions be allowed. However, that request was denied at the time.

As the number of COVID-19 cases spirals out of control in Brazil, sex workers in the city of Belo Horizonte in southeast Brazil have gone on strike for a week, reports Yahoo News.

The city’s sex workers are demanding to be included in the group of “front-line workers” that should receive priority coronavirus vaccines.

The Wuhan coronavirus has hit the global economy in a very bad way, with Brazil being no exception, leading to thousands of sex workers out of a job due to the forced closure of hotels during this pandemic.

Prostitutes would often rent rooms in many hotels and the hotels made a tidy profit as well, which is why Cida Vieira, president of the Association of Prostitutes of Minas Gerais state, told media persons, “We are in the front line, moving the economy and we are at risk. We need to get vaccinated.”

Vieira and other women held a protest Monday (5 April) waving placards declaring: “Sex workers are professionals” and “Sex work and health.”

“We are a priority group, we are health educators, peer educators. We form part of that group, since we give information about STIs for men, distribute condoms…” said Vieira.

“We are part of the priority group because we deal with various types of people and our lives are at risk,” said Lucimara Costa, one of the protesting prostitutes.

As per government guidelines, health workers, teachers, the elderly, indigenous people and people with underlying health conditions have been prioritized for the first vaccination round. The Brazilian government hopes to vaccinate these priority groups, estimated to be around 77 million people, in the first half of 2021.

However, this is seen as a tall order because due to a shortage of doses the target to inoculate 77 million people may be achieved only in September and that could lead to further deaths.

So far the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 332,000 lives in Brazil, second only to the United States.

Allahabad HC denies anticipatory bail to PFI member

PFI Allahabad hc prayagraj

The Allahabad High Court on Tuesday dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of a Popular Front of India (PFI) office-bearer, who feared arrest for hurting religious sentiments in an inflammatory speech against the foundation stone laying for the Ayodhya Ramjanmabhoomi temple.

The PFI is an extremist Islamic organisation and has often been accused of involvement in anti-national and anti-social activities.

A Lucknow bench of the high court denied the pre-arrest bail to PFI activist Mohammad Nadeem, saying the right to freedom of speech and expression is “not an absolute licence to hurt religious sentiments”.

Nadeem had been booked last year by the Barabanki police under section 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code after he made some objectionable remarks against the foundation laying ceremony for the construction of the Ayodhya temple.

“The fundamental right to freedom of speech and expression in a secular state is not an absolute license to injure and hurt the religious feelings and faiths and beliefs of fellow citizens,” ruled Justice C D Singh, dismissing Nadeem’s bail plea. “A person who takes the risk of dissemination of blasphemous messages is not entitled to get the discretion of the court exercised in his favour,” the judge added.

The court passed the order on an anticipatory bail application filed on behalf of the accused.

Opposing the plea, the government counsel Rajesh Kumar Singh argued that the allegations of the FIR against the accused were far too serious. “On earlier occasions also, the accused was involved in committing similar offences and he is habituated to disturbing harmony of the society by spreading hatred between the two communities,” added Singh.

EC notice to DMK’s Udhayanidhi Stalin for remarks on Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley

udhayanidhi stalin

The Election Commission on Tuesday issued a notice to DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin for his controversial remarks that BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley died as they were “unable to tolerate the pressure and torture” given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The DMK leader had made the statement while addressing a political gathering in Dharapuram on March 31.

In its notice, the EC asked Udhayanidhi to respond before 5.00 pm Wednesday, “failing which the Commission shall take a decision without any further reference to you”.

The notice said the Commission had received a complaint from the BJP on April 2 alleging that Udhayanidhi Stalin had stated that “Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley (both Union ministers) died unable to tolerate the pressure and torture given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi”.

The Commission said it is of the view that the contents of the speech made by him violates the provision of model code of conduct which states that “Criticism of other political parties, when made, shall be confined to their policies and programme, past record and work. Parties and candidates shall refrain from criticism of all aspects of private life, not connected with the public activities of the leaders or workers of other parties. Criticism of other parties or their workers based on unverified allegations or distortion shall be avoided”.

Assembly elections were held in Tamil Nadu in a single phase on Tuesday.

Attacks on TMC and BJP candidates: Five arrested

West Bengal bombs BJP TMC

Police arrested five persons ― three members of the TMC and two of the BJP― for their alleged involvement in assaulting TMC leader Sujata Mondal, candidate from Arasmbagh, earlier on Tuesday.

Mondal, said she was chased and hit on the head by saffron party men, when she was out visiting polling booths in Arandi area of the constituency, after having received reports that voters were not being allowed to exercise franchise.

“My bodyguards saved my life. I came to know that BJP members were thwarting people from casting their votes in Arandi. I went there to find out what went wrong. I was assaulted, hit with bamboo sticks by the saffron party men,” Mondal, estranged wife of BJP MP Saumitra Khan, said.

In yet another incident, TMC candidate Dr. Nirmal Majhi was heckled and his vehicle attacked when he tried visiting a booth in Uluberia (Uttar) assembly constituency. Majhi was made to wear a helmet and escorted out of the troubled area by the police.

One of his security guards sustained serious injuries when bricks were hurled at him, a police officer said, adding that he is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Police also launched a search for those who assaulted Papiya Adhikary, BJP candidate from Uluberia (Dakshin) assembly seat, when she visited Uluberia hospital to call on an injured party candidate.

The attacks were part of a series of clashes which were reported from several parts of Bengal, where polling took place in the third phase of assembly elections.

BJP candidate for Tarakeshwar, Swapan Dasgupta, was also allegedly abused by TMC supporters while going on a round of polling stations.

Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer Ariz Aftab has sought reports from poll personnel on all poll related violence which occurred on Tuesday, officials said.

Maharashtra govt moves SC against CBI inquiry into ex-minister Anil Deshmukh

Anil Deshmukh Maharashtra

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday moved the Supreme Court challenging the Bombay High Court order directing the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry within 15 days into the allegations of corruption and misconduct levelled by former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh against former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

“We have filed an appeal on behalf of state government against the Bombay High Court order of yesterday,” said Maharashtra standing counsel Sachin Patil.

The high court had said that this was an “extraordinary” and “unprecedented” case which warranted an independent inquiry.

Singh, in his plea filed on March 25, sought a CBI probe against Deshmukh who, he claimed, had asked police officers, including suspended cop Sachin Waze, to extort ₹100 crore from Mumbai’s bars and restaurants.

After the high court order on Monday, Anil Deshmukh, a veteran politician from Vidarbha, resigned from the Maharashtra state government.

In his resignation letter, Anil Deshmukh said that he didn’t find it morally correct to continue as the Home Minister after the Bombay High Court’s order initiating a CBI probe against him. The CBI probe spells further trouble for the Maha Vikas Aghadi government.

Bangladesh PM vows strict action against Islamist outfits who protested against PM Modi’s visit

Bangladesh Islamist outfits attack Hindus

After the radical Muslim outfits Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam ran riot in Bangladesh, attacking Hindu homes and destroying Hindu temples right around the time when PM Narendra Modi had gone on a state visit, Bangladeshi PM Sheikh Hasina promised stern action against the Islamist groups.

The Indian PM was on a two-day Bangladesh visit on March 26-27 as the chief guest of the celebrations marking 50 years of the Bangladeshi Liberation War .

For the Bangladeshi PM, the riots were an embarrassment and were also seen as an act of defiance against her. She has directed the National Security Intelligence to take measures to contain the spread of Islamists.

Hasina, speaking in the Bangladesh parliament on Sunday (4 April), did not hesitate to point fingers at the duplicity of the leaders of the Islamist outfits who would go to Deoband, the famous Islamic seminary in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh for studies, but would protest Modi’s visit.

Speaking about Hefazat leader Mamunul Haque, Hasina said after setting vehicles on fire, he was enjoying his vacation with his second wife in a resort and asked about his source of money.

However, the opposition party the Bangladesh National Party has supported the Jamaat and the Hefazat in their protests.

The riots by members of Hefazat-e-Islam led to 12 people losing their lives and widespread destruction of property. The Islamists want Sharia law to be implemented in Bangladesh and want to add the phrase “Complete faith and trust in the Almighty Allah” into the constitution.
