One Hindu lynched, two injured over cattle-theft allegations in Bihar’s Muslim-majority Seemanchal

A man was lynched and the eyes of two other individuals were severely damaged over suspicion of cattle theft at Kadgama village under Shrinagar police station of Purnia district in Bihar on Thursday, said police.

Locals said that the three persons were inebriated and attempted to steal two buffaloes. But they were caught and were subsequently lynched by a mob.

“Soon after they were caught, villagers thrashed them mercilessly and one of them died while two others were seriously injured,” said a police official, adding, “we somehow managed to bring them to hospital.”

The deceased has been identified as Shyam Dev Yadav of Araria. “Eyes of one person Manoj Yadav of Purnia have been badly damaged while the third Kailash Sah of Araria is also injured. The two are undergoing treatment at Purnia sadar hospital,” said the police official.

A source from the hospital source said, “One of the injured may lose his eyesight as his eyes have been badly damaged. We are trying our best to restore his eyesight.”

The police say that they have begun identifying the people behind the incident. “We have identified the culprits and police will soon arrest them,” station house officer (SHO) Santosh Kumar Jha said.

In May 2019, a 50-year-old was beaten to death by a mob in Araria on suspicion of being a cattle thief. Before that in January a 55-year-old man was brutally beaten to death over suspicion of cattle theft.

Cattle theft rampant in Muslim-dominated Seemanchal

Cattle theft is rampant in four districts – Katihar, Araria, Kishanganj besides Purnia. A report recently prepared by the Kishanganj office of Border Security Force (BSF) said about one lakh cattle were either smuggled to Bangladesh or sold to hundreds of slaughterhouses in Seemanchal.

“Seemanchal people’s economy largely lies on cattle rearing and agriculture and they become furious over cattle theft,” said social activist Vijay Kumar Shreevasatava. He suggested ‘better arrangements for slaughterhouses’ and checking cattle smuggling.

Seemanchal is a Muslim-majority area where Owaisi’s AIMIM won all its five seats in the recently held Bihar elections.

Parler files lawsuit against Amazon for de-platforming it unannounced

Social media platform Parler has dragged Amazon into a lawsuit for allegedly cutting off its services unannounced. It asserted the antitrust violations, stating that Amazon did not issue the 30-day notice period and suspended its services in an impromptu manner.

“Without AWS, Parler is finished as it has no way to get online,” the complaint said. “And a delay of granting this TRO by even one day could also sound Parler’s death knell as President Trump and others move on to other platforms.” It went to say how Amazon Web Services kicked the company off its cloud servers for political and anti-competitive reasons. The conservative social network founded in 2018 exploded in popularity among supporters of President Trump after the November U.S. election.

Responding to these allegations the Amazon Web Services (AWS) team said that there was a significant amount of content on Parler that encouraged and incited violence against others and that Parler was unable or unwilling to promptly identify and remove this content, which was a violation of their terms of service. It went on to say that Parler’s lawsuit has “no merit.”

This is in the wake of last week’s ‘storming of the Capitol’ incident, where Trump supporters breached security protocols and mobbed the White House because of the results of the electoral college that voted Joe Biden for POTUS.

unified pension scheme

The Ooty police have returned a bag containing ₹2 lakh to an old man named Nanjan. Nanjan had lost his bag near Ooty bus stand of the Nilgiri hills and had been devastated. He had been raising that money for his grandson’s surgery.

This bag was found at the Ooty Central Bus Stand in the Nilgiris district yesterday. The bag was found by a female police officer named Rajkumari who was on security duty there. When she had looked into it, it was found to contain ₹2,27,000 rupees. But it was unknown as to who the owner of the bag was. She took it back to the station and handed it over to her superiors.

The investigation revealed that Nanjan (73), a resident of a private estate in Solur near Ooty, had left a complaint with the Ooty police stating that his bag containing money was missing. He had borrowed it from a friend for the surgery.

When he had gone to the bus station to go home, the bag containing the money had slipped and fallen down. This was when it had been found by the police officer. Following this, the police called Nanjan, the owner of the bag to the police station and had handed over the money to him.

Taking another step in boosting the regional aerial connectivity in India, Star Air today commenced the direct daily flight operations from Kalaburagi, Karnataka to Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh under the RCS-UDAN (Regional Connectivity Scheme – Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) of Government of India. Attesting the dual objectives of the UDAN scheme; making air travel affordable for the people & simultaneously enhance its coverage in the country, 305 UDAN routes & 53 airports including 5 heliports and 2 Water Aerodromes have been operationalized till date.

Inaugurated under the UDAN scheme, Kalaburagi airport recently completed a successful 1 year of service. The airport has become the fastest growing airport in the country. More than 1000 flights have ferried more than 43,000 people from the airport. To celebrate the hard work, commitment, and perseverance of the involved professionals, the officials of the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and Airport Authority of India (AAI) were present at the route launch.

MoCA had received numerous requests for the commencement of the flight operations on the route including an appeal by the Hyderabad Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HKCCI) for the necessity of the direct flight operations from Kalaburagi to Tirupati. Tirupati city, also called as the ‘Spiritual Capital of Andra Pradesh’, is home to the most famous and auspicious Sri Venkateshwara Swamy Temple popularly called ‘Tirupati Balaji Temple’ which has its name in the most-visited shrine across the globe. Apart from the Tirupati Balaji temple, the place is also famous for other historical temples, Sri Venkateshwara National Park, Deer Park, Tirupati, & Talakona Waterfalls, Tirupati. The century old temples in Tirupati are one of the first choices of the pilgrims of the country. Moreover, the Tirumala Hills in Tirupati is the second oldest rock mountain hills in the world.

Due to the unavailability of any direct transportation mode between these two cities, people had to travel either by road or had to opt for a rail journey combined with a road trip, which took more than 12 hours by road & more than 20 hours by train & bus to cover the entire journey of 630 km. Now, people can opt for a direct flight and cover this long-distance journey in just 70 mins.

The airline, Star Air was awarded the Kalaburagi – Tirupati route under the RCS-UDAN-3 bidding process last year. The airline will be operating three weekly flights on the route and will deploy its 50-seater Embraer-145 luxury aircraft. With the flag-off, there are now 24 routes under the ambit of RCS-UDAN for Star Air.

COVID Vaccination not mandatory: TN Health Secretary

Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Dr. J. Radhakrishnan has said that it is not mandatory for people to get vaccinated for COVID19 and only those who voluntarily come forward would be administered the vaccine.

The first batch of  5.56 lakh doses of Serum Institute’s Covishield corona virus vaccines are arriving in Tamil Nadu today from Pune. The vaccination will start from January 16th.

Dr. Radhakrishnan during speaking to the press said that in the first phase, 5,56,500 Covshield vaccines from Serum Institute and 20,000 COVAXIN vaccines from Bharat Biotech will arrive in Tamil Nadu. A person will be vaccinated twice at 30-day intervals. Vaccines are to be first administered to frontline workers like doctors, nurses, hygiene workers, etc. Guidelines from the Central Government are awaited for who will be administered Covishield and COVAXIN.

The vaccines have now arrived at the Chennai airport. From here, they will be taken to 10 locations in the state.

IMK’s efforts pay off: Christian cemetery built right in front of temple by local Church to be shifted

The Government of Tamil Nadu in response to a legal notice, has said that the Christian cemetery built right in front of the Manimoortheeswaram Uchishta Ganapathy Temple near Tirunelveli will be shifted to another place in order to avoid law and order problems.

The notice served by Legal Rights Observatory, an independent legal activism collective, to Tirunelveli City Police Commissioner Deepak Damoor and Deputy Commissioner (Law & Order) S. Saravanan, stated that the said plot of land belonging to the temple was illegally encroached by Sacred Heart Church, claiming title and ownership over the land.

It stated that despite the devotees requesting to clear the Christian groups from the place and register an FIR, no action was taken rather the National Security Act (NSA) was slapped against the devotees. It also pointed out that the police refused to even register a complaint against the encroachers citing the above reason.

“Thus it seems the Thachanellur police has given up general recourse in the event of any untoward incident and appears to have taken shelter under the National Security Act which is unlawful and illegal. It indicates the ulterior intention of police to support the illegal encroachers of temple land”, the legal notice date January 1, 2021 read.

The legal notice further added that it was a sad state of affairs where the harasser is allowed to play the victim card and has the magnitude to derail the process of law referring to the incident where Christian pastors accompanied by several members from Tamil Nadu political parties excluding BJP had met Tirunelveli District Collector Mrs. Shilpa Prabhakar Satish IAS to slap NSA against the members of the IMK.

The legal notice stated that invoking of the NSA without reasonable grounds called for legal action and had asked the respondents to respond within 7 days.

Now, the Government of Tamil Nadu has asked to arrange some other place for the grave yards to avoid law and order problems.

Speaking to The Commune, IMK founder leader Arjun Sampath called it a victory for the entire Hindu community in Tamil Nadu. “We welcome the decision taken by the Tamil Nadu Government and thank them for it. We hope it is implemented soon and the graveyards are cleared.”

Background

On the night of October 17, 9 cadres belonging to Indu Makkal Katchi demolished a few graves in the cemetery spanning around 2 acres built right in front of the Manimoortheeswaram Uchishta Ganapathy Temple.

Locals and temple devotees had protested against the coming up of the cemetery since the beginning.

In November 2019, Legal Rights Observatory, an non-profit legal activism organization working towards safeguarding Indian interest had filed a complaint with the Tirunelveli District Collector requesting for the removal of encroachment of Christian cemetery.  Responding to that complaint, the district administration had stated that the Christian cemetery is located on a private land. It added that section 145 has been imposed on the piece of land and burial rituals had been stopped due to the objections raised by the devotees and local people.

However, burial rituals kept continuing in a portion of the cemetery. Around 50 graves is said to have come up in that portion.

Repeated pleas by the locals and Hindu organizations to Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments department and district administration did not seem to have made any progress following which the IMK cadres committed the act and surrendered at the police station.

Following this, Christian pastors and the political parties had met the Tirunelveli District Collector Mrs. Shilpa Prabhakar Satish IAS  asking for charging the IMK members under the stringent National Security Act.

The eight IMK cadres were lodged at Nanguneri sub-jail. The NSA has been revoked for 7 of them and are out on bail while one more person still remains in jail.

Pope makes changes to Catholic laws: Women can now read the Gospel and serve at Mass but cannot become priests

In what one could perceive as progress, the Vicker of Christ, Pope Francis has made some changes in the laws of the Catholic Church.

As per the new law, women can now serve at Mass as readers and distributors of communion while reaffirming they cannot be priests, Vatican News reported.

Conservative clergy had blocked women from performing even such roles because it was considered as an invasion to old rituals.

However, this had been a common practice in many parts of the world, and now Pope Francis will amend the law that will now permit women can read the Gospel and serve on the altar as eucharistic ministers.

The decree was issued from the Vatican on Monday (January 11),  however, women cannot still be ordained as priests, something that will still not be allowed.

The Vatican expressed that these lay roles, officially known as lector and acolyte, were “essentially distinct” from the ordained ministry of the priesthood.

Pope Francis has been under pressure to permit women to be deacons — ordained ministers who perform many of the same functions as priests, such as presiding at weddings, baptisms and funerals which is only reserved for men.

The new formulation of the canon issued by the cannon said, “Lay persons who possess the age and qualifications established by decree of the conference of bishops can be admitted on a stable basis through the prescribed liturgical rite to the ministries of lector and acolyte.”

The specification “lay men” qualifying the laity and present in the Code until today’s modification, is, therefore, abolished.

TN mainstream media calls Ashwin as ‘Indian’ cricketer but Natarajan as ‘Tamil’ cricketer

Mainstream media in Tamil Nadu is known for peddling the Dravidian ideology that divides people on the basis of race based on which caste one belongs to. In their lens, anyone from the Brahmin community, doesn’t qualify to be a Tamil even if the person’s mother tongue is Tamil, as Brahmins are considered as ‘Aryans’ who migrated from far-off lands.

Coming against this backdrop, the Tamil Nadu mainstream media channels namely – Puthiya Thalaimurai and News 7 Tamil found themselves in a spot after netizens dug out its double standards in addressing two players – Ashwin Ravichandran and Natarajan, both of them being players from Tamil Nadu who speak Tamil.

Both these channels addressed Ashwin, a Brahmin, as an ‘Indian’ cricketer while Natarajan, a Vanniyar, was mentioned as ‘Tamil’ cricketer.

On January 1, News 7 Tamil had put out a news in its Twitter page saying “Tamil” player Natarajan has been selected to play in India vs Australia test series.

However, it put out a tweet today in which addressed Ashwin as an “Indian” cricketer stating that the cricketer managed to play well despite 5 fielders encircling him.

This lack of uniformity or rather the presence of heavy bias while describing players from specific community is the reason why their hypocrisy is being called out in social media.
