Dalit leader threatens to shoot Richa Chadda, announces reward of ₹ 2 crores for cutting actress’ tongue

The Richa Chadda-starrer Hindi film Madam Chief Minister has been mired in many a controversies of late. One reason for the controversy is that the poster of the film depicts the film’s Dalit heroine Tara (played by Chadda) holding a broom. Several Dalit leaders have objected to this, and have said that the poster hurts the sentiments of the Dalit community by limiting their identity to a broom.

Another controversy attached to the movie is that the film is believed to be inspired by the life of Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) supremo and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati. While the makers of the film have not substantiated this claim, they have also been criticised for not giving the lead role to a Dalit actress.

However, Bhim Sena chief Nawab Satpal Tanwar has gone one step ahead while raising his objections on the film.

He has announced that he will award an “Ambedkar Shield” made of gold worth ₹ 2 crores to anyone who cuts Richa Chadda’s tongue. In a Facebook Live session, he demanded that the film Madam Chief Minister be banned. He also alleged that the film engages in character assassination of the BSP leader by twisting her life-story and portraying her in a vulgar and indecent manner.

Tanwar also found the film’s dialogue “Main kunwaari hoon, tej kataari hoon, lekin tumhaari hoon” (“I am a virgin, I am a sharp dagger, but I am yours”) objectionable, saying that it insults the BSP chief. He warned the film’s makers that if the movie was released in cinema theatres, film posters would be torn and theatres would be burned. He also announced a reward to anyone who kidnaps the film’s director Subhash Kapoor and “leaves him naked on the road”. Further, Tanwar went on to threaten the actress’ life, saying that he would shoot her.

In response to these threats, Richa Chadda has tweeted “Hum nahi darte” (“I am not afraid”).

PM Modi performs Bhoomi-Poojan of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail

Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed Bhoomi Poojan of Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-II and Surat Metro Rail Project via video conference today. Gujarat Governor, Union Home Minister, Gujarat Chief Minister and Union Housing & Urban Affairs Minister were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister congratulated Ahmedabad and Surat for the gift of Metro as the service will improve connectivity in the two important business centers of the country. He also congratulated people of Gujarat for new trains and railway lines for Kevadiya including modern Jan Shatabdi from Ahmedabad to Kevadiya. The Prime Minister informed that today work started on infrastructure projects worth 17 thousand crore. This shows that even during Corona period, efforts for infrastructure building are gaining momentum. In recent days infrastructure projects worth thousands of crores were either dedicated to nation or work started on new projects.

Terming Ahmedabad and Surat as the cities contributing to Aatamnirbharta, The Prime Minister, recalled the excitement when Metro was launched in Ahmedabad and how Ahmedabad had linked its dreams and identity with Metro. The second phase of metro will benefit the people as it will link new areas of the city with this comfortable mode of transport. Similarly, Surat will also experience better connectivity. These projects are envisaged keeping in mind the requirement of the future, said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister pointed out the difference in approach between the previous governments and the current one taking reference of Metro expansion. He said, as compared to 200 kilometer long Metro line in 10-12 years before 2014, 400 kilometer long Metro line has been operationalized in last 6 years alone. Government is working on 1000-kilometer new lines in 27 cities. He lamented the absence of integrated modern thinking earlier. There was no national policy for Metro. As a result, there was no uniformity in technique and systems of Metro in different cities. Second lacuna was absence of linkage with the rest of the transport system of the city. Today transportation is being developed as an integrated system in these cities, in which Metro will not function in isolation but will work as a collective system. This integration will be taken further by the recently launched National Common Mobility card, asserted the Prime Minister.

Taking the example of Surat and Gandhinagar, the Prime Minister also dwelled on the thinking of the government on urbanization which is not reactive but proactive and keeps the needs of future in mind. Only two decades ago, Surat was mentioned for it plague epidemic rather than its development. The Government, promoted its spirit of entrepreneurial inclusion and toady, Surat is not only 8th largest city of the country- population-wise but also the 4th fastest growing city of the world. 9 out every 10 diamonds are cut and polished in Surat. Similarly, 40 per cent of man-made fabric of the country is made in Surat as about 30 per cent man-made fiber is being produced there. Surat, today, is the second cleanest city of the country. The Prime Minister also elaborated upon efforts in housing for poor, traffic management, roads and bridges, sewage treatment and hospitals for enhancing the ease of living in the city. This became possible by better planning and holistic thinking, and Surat has turned out to be a great example of ‘Ek Bharat, Shresth Bharat’ as it is home to entrepreneurs and laborer from all parts of the country, said the Prime Minister.

Similarly, Prime Minister talked about the journey of Gandhinagar, which underwent a transformation from a city of government employees and retirees to a young vibrant city. Today, Gandhinagar is identified by renowned institutes like IIT, National Law University, NIFT, National Forensic Science University, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University, Indian Institute of Teacher Education, Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Information and Communication Technology, National Institute of Design (NID), Raksha Shakti University etc. These institutions have not only transformed education landscape of the city but also brought companies to the campuses, increasing the employment avenues in the city. PM Modi also mentioned Mahatama Mandir which gave a push to conference-tourism. Projects like modern railway station. Gift City, Sabarmati River Front, Kankariya Lake Front, water aerodrome, bus rapid transit system, world’s largest stadium in Motera, six-lane Gandhinagar Highway have become Ahmedabad’s identity. The City is getting a modern makeover without sacrificing its old character, said the Prime Minister.

PM Modi also mentioned that Ahmedabad has been declared ‘World Heritage City’, and is getting a new airport in Dholera. The airport will get connected with Ahmedabad with already-approved Mono-Rail. Work is under progress on Bullet Train connecting Ahmedabad and Surat to the financial capital of the country- Mumbai.

The Prime Minister also took up the steps taken in the area of rural development. He termed the improvement brought in roads, electricity, water situation in Gujarat over the period of last two decades as an important chapter in the journey of Gujarat’s development. Today, every village of Gujarat is connected with all-weather road. Tribal villages too have better roads. Today, 80 percent of households in Gujarat have piped water. 10 Lakh water connections have been provided in the state under Jal Jeevan Mission. Soon every household will have water from tap.

Similarly, irrigation has seen new momentum as Sardar Sarovar Sauni Yojna and water grid network has taken irrigation water to dry areas. Narmada water has reached Kutch. Work has been done in micro-irrigation. Electricity is another success story and Gujarat is leading state in solar power. Recently, work was started on the world’s largest solar plant in Kutch. Gujarat is the first state in the country to give separate electricity for irrigation under Sarvodya Yojana.

The Prime Minister also enumerated steps in health sector such as Ayushman Bharat Scheme which has benefited 21 lakh people in the state. More than 500 Jan Aushadh Kendra’s saving about 100 crore for local patients. More than 2.5 lakh houses were built under PM Awas-Gramin. More than 35 lakh toilets  were built in the state under Swachch Bharat Mission.

The Prime Minister asserted that India is taking bold decisions and implementing them with speed. India is not only doing big but also, better, said the Prime Minister. He cited, world’s largest statue, world’s largest affordable housing programme, healthcare assurance programme, Internet connectivity in 6 lakh villages, recently launched worlds larges vaccination campaign as examples of this thinking.

He also mentioned Ro-pax ferry services between Hazira  and Ghogha and Girnar Rope-way as two examples which, through their swift implementation, changed the lives of the local people. These schemes have saved fuel and time as distance between Ghongha and Hazira got reduced from 375 km to 90 km by ferry. The service has been patronised by 50 thousand people in two months and 14 thousand vehicles were also ferried on the service. This has helped farmers and animal husbandry in the region. Similarly, Girnar Rope-way has been used by more than 2 lakh people in two and half months.

The goal of new India can only be achieved by working rapidly with understanding of people’s needs and aspirations, said the Prime Minister. PM Modi put forth his PRAGATI system as a step in this direction. PRAGATI has brought new momentum in the implementation culture of the country as it is chaired by the Prime Minister himself. Effort is to talk directly with the stakeholders and find solutions for the problems. In last 5 years we have reviewed projects worth rupees 13 lakh crore, said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister emphasized that with solutions of long pending schemes, cities like Surat get new energy. Our industry, especially small-scale industry, MSME get the confidence that they have the support of good infrastructure when they compete globally. Under Aatmnirbhar Bharat Campaign, many steps have been taken to help these small industries as they have been provided easy loans worth thousands of crore to tide over the difficult times. They are being given great opportunities by steps like redefinition of MSME that has helped with the fear of expansion, as traders were weary of losing benefits if they grew bigger than the defined limit.  Government has removed these restrictions and has opened new avenues for them. Similarly, this redefinition has removed the distinction between manufacturing and service enterprise, creating new possibilities for the service sector. They are also being given preference in the government procurement. The Government is committed to provide opportunities to small industries to flourish and laborer working in these units should have better amenities and better life, concluded the Prime Minister.

Days after Jaishankar’s visit, Sri Lanka releases Indian fishermen arrested last month

A Sri Lankan court on January 13 ordered the release of 26 Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy last month for allegedly fishing in its waters. The fishermen hailed from the southern state of Tamil Nadu ― 22 were from Ramesvaram and 4 were from Puthukottai.

The apprehended fishermen had been provided consular assistance by the Consulate General of India in Jaffna the previous week. The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka had been in touch with the Sri Lankan Government to facilitate the early release of the fishermen.

But, the court ordered the “nationalisation” of the four mechanised boats and fishing equipment seized at the time of the arrest. The court also admonished the fishermen not to illegally enter the country’s territorial waters in the future and warned of two years of imprisonment if they were caught again.

The court’s order comes days External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar’s three-day visit to the island nation. During his visit, Dr. Jaishankar spoke with his Sri Lankan counterpart Dinesh Gunawardene on the “post-COVID cooperation” between India and Sri Lanka, the need to ensure the aspirations of Sri Lanka’s Tamil minority “within a united Sri Lanka” and also on issues of maritime security and safety.

Dr. Jaishankar also met with Sri Lankan Fisheries Minister Douglas Devananda. In a Joint Working Group session, the two sides reviewed cooperation in fisheries.

Furthermore, he met the delegations of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), and discussed issues pertaining to the development and devolution and the role of provincial councils as part of national reconciliation. TNA is the main Tamil party in the island nation.

The meeting is significant as allies of the ruling Sri Lanka People’s Party (SLPP) aim at launching a public campaign for the abolition of the country’s provincial council system. The SLPP’s Sinhala majority hardliners have been advocating a total abolition of the provincial council system established in 1987. There are nine provincial councils in Lanka.

The Minister also interacted with business leaders of Sri Lanka.

S Jaishankar’s visit ended on January 7. The Minister’s first overseas visit of the year comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa held a virtual summit in September 2020, during which the two sides agreed to further expand ties in a range of areas such as anti-terror cooperation, maritime security and trade and investment.

“Had you been a man I would have held you by the collar…”: Congress MLA threatens woman officer

Pictured: Congress MLA Harsh Vijay Gehlot at a Congress meeting in Sailana Constituency on January 15

Congress MLA Harsh Vijay Gehlot was caught on camera threatening a woman officer in Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district on Sunday.

In a video that has gone viral on social media, the MLA from Sailana Constituency can be seen threatening sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Kamini Thakur in an aggressive manner.

MLA Gehlot and Congress workers participated in a tractor rally held in protest against the Union government’s three farm laws on Sunday. He and a mob of his followers then reached the SDM’s office to hand over a memorandum to the officer. The SDM was reportedly late in coming out to receive the memorandum.

Angered over this perceived slight, Gehlot threatened the officer and scolded her, saying, “We are waiting here for a long time. I am a public representative of my constituency. I won the election because people voted for me but you don’t treat us seriously.”

“You are a woman. Had you been a man I would have held you by the collar and then handed the memorandum to you,” Gehlot can be heard saying in the video.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) raised concern over this incident and attacked the Congress leaders for insulting women. BJP spokesperson Rajneesh Agrawal said, “A few days ago, Congress senior leader Sajjan Singh Verma insulted women and now Harsh Vijay Gehlot threatened a woman officer. This shows Congress leaders don’t have any respect towards women. A case should be registered against Gehlot for threatening the officer.”

“Kamal Haasan won’t even be able to get the votes that Ramya Pandian got”: AIADMK MLA

Vaigaichelvan, the AIADMK MLA from Aruppukottai constituency in a scathing attack on Kamal Haasan, said that in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, the actor-politician won’t even be able to get votes that Ramya Pandian, a contestant of the Bigg Boss Tamil 4, polled in the show.

The AIADMK MLA was taking a jibe at the Makkal Needhi Maiam chief while participating in a function held on the occasion of 104th birth anniversary of AIADMK founder leader Dr. M.G. Ramachandran.

“Kamal Haasan will not even get the votes that Shivani and Ramya Pandian got in Bigg Boss. I myself had put 5 votes for Ramya Pandian out of pity as she seemed a good girl. The political field is not Bigg Boss where you will immediately get 3-4 crore votes.”, he said.

He also took a dig at Rajinikanth and AMMK leader TTV Dinakaran. On Rajinikanth, he said “Rajini who had  some rent arrears to be paid, asked people to not ask him money and has now quit politics. TTV Dinakaran is the only person in the history of politics who owes a debt to his own electorate.”

Has Tulu found a new lease of life?

Article 29 of the Indian Constitution protects the interest of not just religious but also linguistic minorities. It states that any section of the citizens residing in the territory of India or any part thereof having a distinct language, script or culture of its own shall have the right to conserve the same.

Tulu is one of the oldest languages spoken by the people of South Coastal Karnataka and North Coastal Kerala. Census 2011 notes that there are 18,46,427 native speakers of Tulu in India. The cities of Mangaluru, Udupi and Kasaragod are the epicenters of the Tulu language. As Tulu is not one among the official languages in India, speakers of the language have a sense of discontentment and feel that over the next couple of decades, they might lose their identity as Tulu speakers. Hence, many have started raising their voices to include Tulu in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution.

It is said that Sri Madhvacharya, the 13th century spiritual leader and the founder of the Dvaita school of Vedanta was born to a Tulu speaking family. While popular belief/notion is that Tulu language does not have a script, there are inscriptions available that proves the contrary. The oldest available inscriptions in Tulu are from the period between 14th to 15th century AD. Unfortunately most of the Tulu speaking people from Karnataka today, write Tulu in Kannada.

Today, Jai Tulunad’, an organization is at the forefront promoting the language through its online teaching programmes free of cost to people who are interested in learning Tulu in its native script. However, for many years Tulu was taught using Kannada, Hindi or Malayalam scripts depending on the location of people attending the class. Jai Tulunad is now requesting the Governments at the State and Centre level to include Tulu to the 8th schedule of the Constitution.

The Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy is an autonomous organization under Government of Karnataka established in 1994. Tulu Sahitya academy organizes workshops, seminars, cultural events and gatherings for Tulu public. It also provides research grants for research in Tulu language and culture, publishes books and presents the annual awards in the fields of Tulu literature, Tulu folk arts, Yakshagana, research and novel writing.

According to the Karnataka Tulu Academy and other Tulu institutions, a total of over 40 lakh Tuluvas are spread over different parts of Karnataka including Bengaluru. More than 1.5 crore people are using Tulu across the globe. On August 28, 2020, a delegation of people’s representatives from coastal Karnataka met chief minister B S Yediyurappa, seeking state official language status for Tulu and handed over a memorandum. BJP state minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, Mangaluru (north) MLA Dr Bharath Shetty, Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor, MLCs Pratap Simha Nayak and Shantaram Siddi were present on the occasion.

On January 9, 2021, Udupi-Chikmagalur MP Shobha Karandlaje inaugurated the renovated Uchila branch of Mahalakshmi Cooperative Bank Ltd. Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy president Dayanand Kathalsar unveiled the Tulu name board of the cooperative bank. This move was appreciated by social media users saying that this is the first bank having Tulu name board.

Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt ( Paryaya – Admaru Mutt) has organised various cultural and religious programmes as part of the fifth centenary celebration of the Paryaya puja system of the Ashta Matas. On January 22, on the Occasion of  Saura Madhwa Navami, Tulu script learning session will be inaugurated at Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt. Udupi Krishna Mutt also has a nameboard that has Tulu and Sanskrit.

It would be surprising to know that there is also a Tulu film industry. While it took almost 43 years from 1971, for the first 50 Tulu movies, the next 50 came in just four years. The 100th Tulu movie was released in 2018. There is also a Tulu matrimony site as part of Bharat Matrimony.

It is also to be noted that Prime Minister Modi spoke Tulu during his election campaign at Mangaluru. Few months ago, the hashtag #TuluTo8thSchedule was trending on Twitter where several social media users demanded the official language status for Tulu.

As people from different backgrounds have started promoting the usage of Tulu and learning Tulu scripts, revival of Tulu as a written language is definitely not far away.
