Farmers planted 2.37 lakh saplings through Cauvery calling on Maram Thangasamy Remembrance Day

Farmers across Tamil Nadu have planted 2.37 lakh saplings in Tamil Nadu through the Cauvery Calling movement to mark the memorial day of the late environmental activist Maram Thangasamy Ayya.

Sapling planting events were held at Pudukottai, Trichy, Tiruvarur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Salem, Erode, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Cuddalore, Villupuram, Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur on the 14th, 15th and 16th.  Of these, a total of 175 farmers planted eco-friendly timber saplings on their 1,008 acres of farmland.

The inaugural event was held at Pudukottai on September 14.  Maram Thangasamy Ayya’s   son, Mr.Thanga Kannan participated in the event, planted the first sapling and initiated the movement.

Commenting on the work carried out by the Cauvery Calling Movement, he said, “The connection between my father and Isha has always been inseparable. My father Isha has been making many efforts to create awareness about trees among people since the beginning of the Green Hands movement.  He has given saplings from the nursery to people to raise awareness about timber trees among the farmers by visiting farmers on foot.

My father’s advice was that all farmers should plant trees in one-third of their land.  Even though he is not with us now, Isha is nurturing his ideas and movement.

Even last year 1.26 lakh saplings were planted in memory of my father through Cauvery Calling. More than 2.37 lakh saplings have been planted this year. Through these initiatives, the livelihood of the farmers improves. I hope my father’s dream comes true” said Mr.Thanga Kannan.

The Cauvery Calling movement started by Sadhguru, the founder of the Isha Foundation, has greatly increased the practice of tree planting among Tamil Nadu farmers. The field workers of the Cauvery Calling movement have been going from village to village and meeting the farmers in person and claiming the benefits of the tree-based farming system. Also, according to the farmers’ request, they are testing the nature of their soil and water and offering free advice on the trees that are suitable for them.

Australia, UK, and US form AUUKUS to help develop Australia’s nuclear submarine program to counter China

The Australian government has announced a landmark deal with the US and UK for Australia’s submarine program to “go nuclear” amid the growing threat of China in the Pacific.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced that the Australian Navy is going nuclear and this defense pact has been described as “China’s worst nightmare”.

This new grouping will be known as AUUKUS, Australia, the UK, and the US and it will help Australia on how to identify the best way to acquire nuclear-powered submarine capability and share advanced technologies involving artificial intelligence. AUUKUS will facilitate sharing of AI, cyber, underwater systems & long-range strike capabilities for the Indo-Pacific.

The pact was announced on Thursday (September 16) in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Scott Morrison, US President Joe Biden, and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Speaking to reporters Morrison said Australia had entered a new era, with “new challenges. The relatively benign environment we have enjoyed in many decades in our region is behind us,”. We have entered, no doubt, a new era, with new challenges for Australia and for our partners and friends and countries right across our region. “This challenge will require more of us in Australia and all of us who share a common vision about peace and stability and security in our region so all nations can enjoy the fellowship of our region, the trade and the opportunities for our peoples so they can realise what they want for their countries just as we want for our country.”

Morrison described the AUUKUS grouping as a “forever partnership between the oldest and most trusted of friends”. It must be noted that Australia is still under the rule of the British Empire and the Queen is the sovereign and have taken part in all the wars starting from the first world war to the recently concluded war in Afghanistan initiated by the US and supported by the UK

He said the partnership would “enable Australia to protect our national security interests to keep Australians safe and to work with our partners across the region to achieve the stability and security of our region”.

The first major initiative of AUUKUS will be to have a nuclear-powered submarine fleet for Australia, and these three English speaking nations in the next 18 months will determine “the best way forward to achieve this.”

The submarines are to be built in Adelaide, with technical support from the United Kingdom and the United States.

According to Morrison, Australia was “not seeking to establish nuclear weapons or establish a civil nuclear capability” and his country will all of its nuclear non-proliferation obligations.

At this morning’s announcement, alongside President Biden PM Johnson, Morrison called this partnership a “safer and more secure Indo-Pacific region. Our world is becoming more complex, especially here in our region – the Indo-Pacific. This affects us all. The future of the Indo-Pacific will impact all our futures,”.

“To meet these challenges, to help deliver the security and stability our region needs, we must now take our partnership to a new level. A partnership that seeks to engage – not to exclude. To contribute, not take. And to enable and empower – not to control coerce.

“So AUUKUS is born, a new trilateral relationship between Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. AUUKUS – a partnership where our technology, our scientists, our industry, our Defence Forces, are all working together to deliver a safer and more secure region that ultimately benefits all.”

Biden called the creation of AUUKUS as a “historic step to deepen and formalise co-operation among all three of our nations that would bring long term peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region,”.

“Because the future of each of our nation, and indeed, the world, depends on a free and open Indo-Pacific, enduring and flourishing in the decades ahead. This is about investing in our greatest source of strength. Our alliances and updating them to better meet the threats of today and tomorrow,”Biden said

The UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson called this a new chapter in the “friendship” between the three nations and, “This will be one of the most complex and technically demanding projects in the world that will last for decades and requiring the most advanced technology. It will draw on the expertise that the UK has acquired over generations dating back to the launch of the Royal Navy’s first nuclear submarine over 60 years ago.”

Later this month, leaders of the QUAD group of nations will be meeting in Washington to further the agenda in the Indo-Pacific and China has already called Quad, a “regional cooperation cliques formed to target a third country will not be popular and have no future,” and described the Quad, or the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, as a clique based on a cold war ideology and “detrimental to the international order.”

Slap Goondas Act on Temple Land Encroachers: Madras HC to TN Govt

After the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed an amendment to the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act, 1959 that would punish those who encroach Temple properties as a non-bailable and cognizable offense, The Madras High Court on Wednesday (15 September) directed Tamil Nadu’s Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department to issue a public notification calling upon the encroachers of temple properties across the state to voluntarily surrender the lands within a stipulated period of time.

The court was very specific in its direction to the HR&CE Department and made it very clear that it must specifically mention in the notification that “if the encroachers do not voluntarily surrender the temple properties within the time frame stipulated, criminal proceedings will be taken against them including under the Goondas Act.”

Justice S Subramanian, in the order, said: “The respondent (state government and HR&CE Department and DGP) shall not hesitate to invoke the Goondas Act against such professional land grabbers and persons involved in encroachment and illegal activities in respect of the temple properties at large for personal and unjust gains.”

Justice Subramanian said that only officers with impeccable integrity and devotion to duty be made part of the cell and their number be displayed prominently in all the temples in the state as well as on the notice boards of HR&CE Department offices.

This, the court felt will ensure that people interested in protecting temple lands can lodge complaints because they will have more confidence and the court observed that encroachment of temple properties is a crime against the society at large along with misappropriation of temple funds and such offenders prosecuted by the state.

The court also made it very clear that the active participation of HR&CE officials cannot be overruled out called it a dereliction of duty to be viewed seriously and all appropriate action must be taken against them.

The court said that acts of “Fences eating the Crop” should be dealt with sternly and it was the duty of the courts also to protect and safeguard the properties of religious and charitable institutions from wrongful claims of misappropriation.

To ensure propriety is maintained, Advocate General R.Shanmugasundaram said details of temple properties must be uploaded by the HR&CE Department website and the department had engaged 142 surveyors and 50 rover equipment to earmark the boundaries of temple lands.

IAF receives first batch of indigenously developed Medium Range Surface to Air Missile

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh handed over the first Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM) System to Indian Air Force (IAF) chief R.K.S. Bhadauria.

This SAM was developed in the APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex and present during the ceremony was Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) chairman G. Satheesh Reddy.

scientists at the Kalam Complex and Research Centre Imarat (RCI) housed inside, had worked on developing this advanced missile in association with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). “It is the true success of a synergistic effort put in by defence public sector and private sector units, respective scientists and technologists over the last dozen years with RCI being the nodal lab,” informed senior defence officials, wishing to remain anonymous, on Saturday.

Also, more than 100 medium, micro and small scale industries were involved in the project which cannot be named that has led to scaling up technologies and skills to global standards.

The APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex is spread across 4,000-acres of which the former President of India had envisioned and it also houses the Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) and the Defence Research & Development Lab (DRDL). These two labs have played a very important role in the development of strategic missile development projects including avionics over the years.

The Indian Navy has already inducted its version of MRSAM but engineers and scientists had to make some changes for the IAF needs with a hat-trick of successful trials for “accuracy, reliability and efficacy” conducted five years ago at Balasore. “An Army version of the missile is in the advanced stage of development,” informed senior officials.

As of now, the IAF has contracted for 18 firing units with each unit consisting of 24 missiles each as the MRSAM system will now provide point and area air defence for ground assets against threats from fighter aircraft, UAVs, helicopters, guided and unguided munitions, subsonic and supersonic cruise missiles.

The new air defence system is also capable of engaging multiple targets at ranges up to 70 km and is powered by an indigenously developed rocket motor and control system for achieving high manoeuvrability.

Firing unit has Missiles, Combat Management System (CMS), Mobile Launcher Systems (MLS), Advanced Long Range Radar, Mobile Power System (MPS), Radar Power System (RPS), Reloading Vehicle (RV) and Field Service Vehicle (FSV).

“This has been a transformative project with major production units as well as ancillary units augmenting their line systems and manpower. It has helped foster special skills, technologies; setting the right template for development of next generation tactical missiles,” asserted senior defence officials. Incidentally, new RCI director U. Raja Babu has been programme director for MRSAM and P. Srihari is project director, they added.

Top US General who blundered in Afghanistan promised China he would inform them in case of an attack

In a startling discloser by the Washington Post newspaper, it has been reported that the most senior United States Military officer told his Chinese counterpart that he will alert them in the event of a U.S attack, based on excerpts from journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa’s new book Peril.

The officer in question is General Mark Milley, who is the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the principal military advisor to the President, Secretary of Defense, and National Security Council. Milley in conversations with General Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army, twice promised that he would warn China in the event of a US attack.

According to the book by one of America’s foremost investigative journalists Bob Woodward who broke the Watergate scandal, one call took place on Oct 30, 2020, four days before the U.S presidential election, and the other on Jan 8, 2021, just two days after the so-called insurrection at the US Capitol by alleged supporters of President Donald Trump.

Milley in one of his phone calls as per the book excerpts said “General Li, you and I have known each other for now five years. If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise. General Li, I want to assure you that the American government is stable and everything is going to be OK. We are not going to attack or conduct any kinetic operations against you.”

“If we’re going to attack, I’m going to call you ahead of time. It’s not going to be a surprise,” Milley reportedly said.

The second call was meant to placate Chinese fears about the events of Jan. 6. But the book reports that Li wasn’t as easily assuaged, even after Milley promised him: “We are 100 percent steady. Everything’s fine. But democracy can be sloppy sometimes.”

Milley believed that President Donald Trump suffered a mental decline after the election, a view he relayed in a January 8 phone call with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Excerpts from the book published by The Washington Post clearly states that the authors relied on General Milley’s own testimony as one of their main source for the book.

“In the second call, placed to address Chinese fears about the events of Jan. 6, Li wasn’t as easily assuaged, even after Milley promised him, “We are 100 percent steady. Everything’s fine. But democracy can be sloppy sometimes.” Li remained rattled, and Milley, who did not relay the conversation to Trump, . . . understood why. The chairman . . . believed the president had suffered a mental decline after the election . . . a view he communicated to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi . . . on Jan. 8. He agreed with her evaluation that Trump was unstable. . . . Believing that China could lash out if it felt at risk from an unpredictable and vengeful American president, Milley took action.

Milley, who was incidentally appointed by the Trump administration in 2018, expressed regret for participating in a June 2020 photo op with Trump after federal law enforcement cleared a park near the White House of peaceful protesters, thus incurrung the warth of the president.

“Quad is a clique based on a cold war ideology”: China

China which wants to be the dominant force in Asia, on Tuesday (September 14) again was critical of the first in-person meeting of the Quad countries that include India, Australia, Japan, and the United States to be held in Washington on September 24.

Zhao Lijian, the spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry said, “regional cooperation cliques formed to target a third country will not be popular and have no future,” and described the Quad, or the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, as a clique based on a cold war ideology and “detrimental to the international order.”

US President Joe Biden will host the first in-person summit of leaders of the Quad countries after the US and NATO troops pull out from Afghanistan as part of a recalibration strategy to push back China’s growing assertiveness especially in the Indo-Pacific region.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will leave for this summit and will also be speaking at the United Nations and in Washington, he will be joined by Japanese PM Yoshihide Suga and Australian PM Scott Morrison and will hold comprehensive meetings on the future of Quad and the changing dynamics of the Indo-Pacific region.

When asked about the Quad conclave, which is to be held on September 24, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian said: “It (the Quad) should not target any third party. “China believes that any regional cooperation framework should go with the trend of the times and be conducive to mutual trust and cooperation between the regional countries. It should not target any third party or harm their interests,” Zhao Lijian said. “To form exclusive cliques targeting other countries does not conform with the country’s aspirations, won’t be popular and has no future.”

“I want to stress that China is not only an engine for economic growth in Asia Pacific, it is also the main force safeguarding peace,” Zhao Lijian said, adding that China’s growth is an increase in “forces for peace” in the world and “good news” for the region.

“Relevant countries should abandon outdated zero-sum game thinking and narrow geopolitical concepts, take a correct view of China’s development, respect the hearts of the people in the region, and do more things that are conducive to promoting unity and cooperation of regional countries,” Zhao Lijian added.
