Memorial stones belonging to 17th century found near Dindigul

Memorial stones with engravings of human figures have been found at Sithayankottai near Dindigul during a research expedition led by a team of history teachers and enthusiasts.

Two memorial stones dating back to the 17th century were found. The lower deck of one of the stones had a warrior and woman (believed to be the wife) embossed. They can be seen standing with folded hands in welcoming posture. The warrior can be seen having a gun on the right hand while the left hand is on the left side of the waist.

The warrior’s wife can be seen holding a fire in her right hand while her left hand is on the waist. Both of them have their hair tied as that of people belonging to the Nayakar period. In another side of the stone, a lady can be seen holding her baby on the waist.

The memorial stone is believed to be of a regional fief who was respected by the people of the region.
