Six people were arrested on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, by the Tamil Nadu Special Investigation Division (SID) for allegedly attempting to radicalise young people and recruit them into banned organisations Hizb-ut-Tahrir and the Khilafat movement, as reported in Hindu Tamil.
The arrests followed a tip-off received by the Special Investigation Division that secret classes were allegedly being conducted in Thanjavur to indoctrinate young people and encourage them to join the banned organisations.
Based on the information, the police obtained permission from the Thanjavur District Principal Sessions Court and launched an investigation under the supervision of Deputy Superintendent of Police Charles. A team comprising Inspectors Sukumar, Senthil Kumar, Vishnu Prasad, Jayanthi and Muruganandham conducted searches at the residences of the suspects.
On 29 September 2026, the police searched the houses of six individuals in different parts of Thanjavur. Those searched included 25-year-old Yasar Abdul and his 29-year-old brother Umar Mukthar, both from Karambai in Thanjavur Town; 50-year-old Zahir Hussain and his 49-year-old brother Abdul from SNM Nagar in Keezhavasal; 27-year-old Samsudeen from Ramasamypettai in Keezhavasal; and 38-year-old Sheikh Fareed from Rahman Nagar in Keezhavasal.
During the searches, police reportedly seized more than 20 books allegedly linked to the banned organisations Hizb-ut-Tahrir and Khilafat, along with five mobile phones, a laptop and a pen drive.
Following the searches, a case was registered at the Thanjavur East Police Station under four sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Yasar Abdul, Umar Mukthar, Zahir Hussain, Abdul, Sheikh Fareed and Samsudeen were subsequently arrested in connection with the case.
The Special Investigation Unit has arrested 5 people in TamilNadu for having links with a “banned organisation”. Laptops, pen drives, and documents were seized, says the news.
