SC slams TN Election Commission for asking for postponement of local body elections

The Supreme Court of India has slammed the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) for asking for postponement of local body elections when Lok Sabha by-elections and Assembly elections have been taking place across the country.

Rural local government elections were held in Tamil Nadu in 2019. Elections were not held in only nine districts due to the division of the new districts at that time. Accordingly, elections for these nine districts will be held on October 6 and 9.

The case came up for hearing again in the Supreme Court yesterday before a bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli. The TNSEC had asked for 7 months more holding urban local body elections.

“When Lok Sabha and Assembly elections are held in Tamil Nadu, why not hold local elections only. Why is the Tamil Nadu Election Commission continuing to ask for time?”, the court asked.

The court has now asked the TNSEC to file an affidavit in two days and a decision will be taken after that.

DMK Fin Min PTR cyber-bullies and goes on an abusive rant, harasses woman for questioning him

In yet another incident of DMK Minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan indulging in cyber-bullying, the Minister unleashed abuses on persons who had questioned about him abstaining from the recently concluded GST Council meeting.

The 45th Meeting of the GST Council took place at Lucknow on Friday (September 17). This was the first in-person meeting of the GST Council since March 2020 when the 39th GST Council meeting happened. The subsequent meeting happened virtually due to the nationwide lockdown in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister had skipped this meeting to attend a baby shower ceremony and other functions.  He said that they were informed of the mandatory physical meeting a week before and that he could not cancel his plans.

As the matter came to light, Palanivel Thiagarajan became the butt of all jokes and memes with the hashtag  #வளைகாப்பு_PTR and #வளைகாப்பு_ராஜன் trending on Twitter.

Reacting to the issue, Palanivel Thiagarajan started spewing abuses on journalists, opposition politicians as well as common netizens who had questioned him.

He kept making ‘cow urine’ barbs which is usually done by rabid Hindumisic elements to insult those who worship cows.

Responding to a woman cadre of the BJP who had asked him if he really skipped the GST Council meeting to attend baby shower function of his sister-in-law, Palanivel Thiagarajan cyber-bullied her and called her a person ‘whose brain has been spoilt by drinking cow urine’.

Here is a look at some of the other rants by the Finance Minister.

Responding to a netizen, Palanivel Thiagarajan called the person a ‘dolt’ and a person with ‘unwarranted-privilege-hardened skull’.

This is not the first time the DMK Minister has been behaving like an online troll and cyber-bullying those who disagree with him or his party. Just days before, he stooped to a new low unbecoming of the position he holds by making disgusting remarks while engaging with a netizen online.

The MIT-educated Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu belonging to an illustrious family of politicians said “Dude… I crap bigger than you.” and went on to call the netizen a ‘scum’, ‘cultist’ and ‘minion’ who had taken a jibe at the collapse of Lehmann Brothers where Palanivel Thiagarajan worked.

He has also made a number of contentious statements against different public personalities.

He engaged in a public spat with Goa Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho. He had unleashed abuses and made personal attacks on Coimbatore South BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan who had called out the former for insulting Goa during the 43rd GST Council meeting. Before that, he had picked fight with Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev over the latter’s demand for freeing temples from state control. This had led to spat with two other public personalities namely former Infosys director Mohandas Pai and The Hindu’s Malini Parthasarathy.

Prof TJ Joseph, whose hands was chopped off by Islamist PFI in 2010, pens his memoir

tj joseph

In a memoir that was recently translated from Malayalam to English, TJ Joseph, a college professor recounts his horrible ordeal after his hands were brutally chopped off by radical Islamists of PFI in 2010.

Joseph, after being accused of blasphemy, was attacked by radical Islamists belonging to the PFI. In his memoir, he narrates how everyone, including his church, college, friends, and neighbors, disowned him over the false allegations of blasphemy.

In an interview that he had given to the Sunday Times, Joseph said that punishing those persons responsible will bring justice. He also made it very clear that religious fundamentalism is the problem.

Joseph’s memoir – titled “A Thousand Cuts: An Innocent Question and Deadly Answers” – talks about the pain and suffering he endured over the allegations and attack. The book was first released in Malayalam in 2020 and the English translation was done by Nandkumar.

It all started in 2010 when Joseph was preparing a question paper for BCom second semester internal examination. He used the word ‘Mohammad’ referring to the writer PT Kunju Mohammed. However, Muslim radicals believed that he used the word intentionally to insult the Prophet, which then led to some jihadists chopping off his hand.

Joseph writes that though some people were sympathetic towards him, many still believed that the punishment he had gotten was for a crime he had allegedly committed.

He said, “I wanted to present the truth, and an autobiography was the ideal medium for it. Moreover, I wanted to reveal how insecure we are due to religious extremism. No one is safe in this country when such a situation arises.” Joseph said that religious harmony was “as ephemeral and vulnerable as cobwebs.”

However, what caused Joseph more pain was not the physical agony, but what the college management and church did to him. He said that the principal and management of Thodupuzha Newman College and his church supported him initially but in later stages, everyone left him. He was dismissed from service over the alleged blasphemy.

After his dismissal from the college, his church excommunicated his family, and pastoral letters were read in 120 churches in the Kothamangalam diocese against him. In those letters, the Church justified its action to disown him, which then led to his friends and family members not visiting his house due to the church’s reach into their own lives.

He said, “My attackers were blinded by fundamentalism, and they gave me only physical pain. But what my own people did to me was even worse as it affected my family and me in all ways.”

But the worst came in 2014, when his wife Salomi committed suicide. He said that depression brought on by the lack of income, legal expenses, and continuous harassment had caused her to take the extreme step. There were some well-wishers who had continued to support him, but his wife’s mental state kept deteriorating.

On March 19, 2014, after she returned had home from a session with a psychiatrist, Salomi committed suicide. His wife’s suicide caused a public outrage, forcing the college to reinstate Joseph but only two days before the date of his retirement.

He said, “Losing her was hard for me and what was painful was the fact that she could not see me back in the job, which was her biggest wish.”

It is ironic that the very Church that he once depended but had abandoned him to prove its secular credentials during his time of need is now openly coming out and talking about the peril of Love Jihad.

CPI(M) internal note states “Love Jihad” and Islamic radicalism is a clear and present danger in Kerala

kerala love jihad

A leaked internal note of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in Kerala had admitted the threat posed by radical Islamist organisations in the state.

On Thursday (September 16), the CPI(M) distributed pamphlets amongst its cadre that mentioned attempts made by Islamists to lure young, educated women in professional colleges to the path of Islamic Jihad.

The internal document, titled ‘Minority Communalism’, was clear in its messaging that extremist forces had ‘infiltrated’ into mainstream Muslim organisations to create communal disharmony in the state, and cautioned about the support for the Taliban in Kerala.

More importantly, the CPIM has told its supporters and party workers to remain vigilant on Islamic radicalism.

“Deliberate attempts are being made to lure youth into communalism and extremist ideologies. Conscious efforts are on to make educated young women in professional colleges to think that way… Both the student union and youth organisation (of CPM) should pay special attention to the issue,” the ruling party in Kerala stated.

It must be noted that when the BJP and RSS had raised the issue of Love Jihad, they were called communal. But now allegations of ‘love jihad’ and ‘narcotics jihad’ have been made by Catholic Bishop Joseph Kallarangatt.

The BJP has now accused the CPI(M) of its appeasement politics and for providing ‘fertile ground’ to terrorists to thrive.

“The extremist forces would not have gained a foothold in the state if they had reacted strongly against them. What sincerity do they have to say now that vigil should be stepped up against terrorism?”, senior BJP leader Kummanam Rajasekharan pointed out.

BJP state president K Surendran had recently called on CPM to publicly admit that ‘Love Jihad’ or Grooming Jihad is prevalent in the state of Kerala.

Surendran said, “CPM should stop its double standards on the issue. There should be a proper investigation on the matter. The influence of terrorists is rising in the state and they are using love jihad to further their goals.”

India’s copper imports rise by 26% in 2021-22 Q1, trend to continue: Reports

The International Copper Association has said that India’s copper import which increased 26% to 60,766 tonne in June quarter of 2021-22, is expected to rise further during the remaining part of the financial year with economic activity witnessing a strong recovery from COVID-related restrictions.

The statement said that the demand for the metal, which is a key input for multiple sectors, is expected to see a further rise in the remaining part of the financial year due to a surge in the economic activity.

With 26-3% growth, imports are likely to be in the range of 295,000 -304,000 tonne for the current financial year, the association added.

India ended the last financial year with copper imports of 2,33,671 tonne.

“It is disheartening to see imports rising so steeply and other nations gaining at our expense even though we have adequate domestic production capacity to meet our domestic demand,” International Copper Association Director Mayur Karmakar was quoted saying in a report.

“We are witnessing a strong increase in imports of copper into the country. Even though the first quarter of this financial year had multiple lockdowns and various restrictions imposed across several states due to the second COVID wave, copper imports grew by a robust 26 percent as compared to the same quarter last year,” Karmakar said.

He said that given the strong demand emanating from various sectors, copper imports may increase by 30% year-on-year between July and March.

“With the economy opening up and lockdown restrictions being eased in most parts of the country, we see a further spurt in demand as manufacturing and other sectors gain momentum,” he added.

India was a net exporter of copper for close to two decades before the closure of Sterlite Copper plant at Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu in May 2018.

In the same year, India became net importer of copper for the first time. With rising demand from various sectors, the import figure is expected to increase every year while domestic production is hardly witnessing any uptick.

According to Ministry of Commerce, India earned a net foreign exchange of USD 1.1 billion on account of export of copper in 2017-18. However, India now incurs a net foreign exchange outflow of USD 1.2 billion due to imports of copper every year, after the shutdown of Sterlite Copper’s smelter plant.

India’s import of refined copper has benefitted China to a great extent. Prior to the shutdown of the Tuticorin smelter, India exported copper worth USD 2.1 billion to China in 2017. The same sharply reduced to only USD 532 million by 2020. During the same time, exports of copper to China from Pakistan and Malaysia increased by over USD 2 billion from 2017 to 2020.

In other words, the suspension of operations at the Tuticorin smelter has helped China reduce its import dependence on India by USD 1.5 billion.

Gujarat ATS and Indian Coast Guard recover heroin worth ₹150 crores from Iranian vassal

In a joint operation conducted by the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad and the Indian Coast Guard off the Gujarat coast, authorities recovered a huge consignment of heroin after it boarded an Iranian boat with seven crew members who are all Iranian nationals

The joint task force seized an estimated 30 to 50 kg of heroin worth about ₹150 to ₹250 crore in the international market from the boat during the operation carried out on Saturday night (September 18).

However, according to the local officials, the exact amount of the drug being carried in the ship will be known after it has been thoroughly checked as drug smugglers are known to create cavities that are very difficult to locate.

“On an intelligence based joint act, @IndianCoastGuard with ATS #Gujarat apprehended #Iranian boat in #Indian waters with 07 crew carrying #drugs. The boat is brought to the nearest port for further rummaging and investigations,” a defence PRO of Gujarat said on their official Twitter handle.

Gujarat ATS DIG Himanshu Shukla told PTI that, “A joint operation was launched with the Indian Coast Guard, and the Iranian boat and its seven crew members were apprehended. We presume that somewhere between 30 and 50 kg of heroin, worth ₹150 crore to ₹250 crore, was loaded on the boat. The consignment may be more, as the exact amount can be known only after rummaging of the boat,”.

Quad grouping working on safe supply chain for semiconductors to curtail China’s hegemony

In a bid to curtail China’s stronghold over the safe supply chain for semiconductors, leaders of the Quad nations who will be meeting in Washington have agreed to work together and at the same time are looking forward to broadening scope against China in the Indo-Pacific.

Amid the Coronavirus, the Quad may soon work out some resilient, diverse, and secure technology supply chains for hardware, software, and services that are of utmost importance to their national interest, reports Nikkei.

A joint statement provides further details on the common principle to be applied for technological development that states that “the technology needs to be designed and developed in such a manner that it is shaped and shared by the countries on democratic values.”

Even though China is the target, the statement makes no direct mention of the ruthless communist state. However, there is an indirect reference to China’s use of its inappropriate technology and the statement stresses the ongoing challenges regarding illicit transfer and theft of technology which undermines the foundation of technological development.

The statement is very clear in its objective wherein the Quad is looking forward to launching a joint initiative for determining their capacity and identifying their vulnerability in supply chain security for semiconductors.

As of now the US and Japan have only 30% of the chipmaking capacity, while India and Australia do not have any leading chipmakers and India is heavily reliant on China.

DMK to open ‘Dravida schools’ in all schools and colleges of TN, public call it move to spread Hindu hatred

Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy has said that all schools and colleges of the state must have a ‘Dravida school’ from next year.

The second year anniversary of the Dravida School established by known Suba Veerapandian of anti-Hindu organization Dravida Kazhagam was held at Anbagam in Thenampettai, Chennai yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister Ponmudy said that Dravida Schools are need of the hour to teach students about Dravidian history. He said that a man committed to the Dravidian ideology is now the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and added that Dravida Schools will be established in all schools and colleges of Tamil Nadu from next year.

In other words, Minister Ponmudy’s call for the establishment of a Dravida School in all schools and colleges in Tamil Nadu, which was started by Suba Veerapandian, who has been spewing Hindu hatred throughout his life, seems to indicate that the DMK government is planning to spread Hindu hatred and religious conversion among students.

This has led to genuine concerns among the public about the DMK planning to sow the seeds of Hindu hatred in school children and college students.

The Dravidian school of thought is based on the ideals of rabid anti-Hindu demagogue EV Ramasamy Naicker. It emphasizes on the breaking of family and social structures by asking people to leave the principle of monogamy, opposing rituals, derogating Hindu religion, etc.
